So proud of our town centre
Small businesses can help provide bargains and
more meaningful gifts on a budget this
Christmas, says Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins
C
HRISTMAS is always a special and magical time.
But the build up to Christmas feels very different
this year – and not just because of the unseasonably
mild weather and the winter World Cup!
The rising cost-of-living and ongoing energy crisis, means many
families have less disposable income and will be shopping on a
tighter budget than usual. Lots of us will be looking for bargains
or for gifts that may not be expensive, but are often more unique
and thoughtful.
As someone with a huge love of Chesterfield town centre, I
hope that others will consider checking out the local independent
shops and market stalls which can be the perfect place to find a
bargain or that special gift.
Over the last few weeks, I have been asking you to send me
details of your favourite local shops, which I will then be visiting
on Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday takes place every year on the first
Saturday of December and is a grass roots, non-commercial
campaign, which highlights small business success and
encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small
businesses in their communities.
Chesterfield is packed with unique shops – favourites of mine
include Tall Bird Records, Huckleberry Willow, the Bee Orchid
Home & Gifts, RD Models on Sheffield Road and many more –
and the variety of market stalls can provide super special gifts.
There will also be a Chesterfield Artisan Market on 18th
December. The Artisan Market, which is usually held on the last
Sunday of every month, has been a real success for the town and
brings people in from miles around.
It is a real highlight of the town’s calendar and is filled with
home-made and unique products, created by local craftspeople.
The usual markets on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays offer
bargains, some of the best fruit and veg, and lots of the
Christmas staples that you need.
Whilst changing shopping habits and the increase in online
retail has seen changes to our town centre and reduced market
shopping across the country, Chesterfield continues to punch
above its weight and has a lower shop vacancy rate than the
ORE Derbyshire hosts are being sought for
refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.
The Derbyshire resettlement partnership, which includes the
county council, district and borough councils and other public
sector agencies, and charitable organisations, is seeking more
people who may be keen to support the
Homes for Ukraine scheme.
The partnership is particularly interested in
hearing from people who may have already
expressed an interest to offer accommodation
to Ukrainian people but have yet to be
matched with a guest.
New hosts are being sought for a range of
reasons. These include to help support Ukrainian guests whose
original accommodation hasn’t worked out, or where their
original hosts have had changes to their personal
circumstances, meaning they are unable to continue to offer the
use of their home.
Visitors from Mansfield, Ashfield and other areas often remark
on the attractiveness of our town centre and how busy and
bustling it feels in comparison to their own. This is ironic because
many Chesterfield folk only say: ”It’s not as busy as it was.”
But having a town centre that continues to thrive is a
responsibility for all of us. Only by shopping locally can we
ensure our town centre is there for future generations.
I would urge people to make the most of the independent
shops, range of retailers and excellent cafes when shopping this
Christmas. You might find the perfect gift, and at a bargain price.
I hope all Chesterfield folk have a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year!
Can you help Homes for Ukraine scheme?
M
In addition, as more visa applications are approved with
arrivals looking to make Derbyshire their temporary home,
further hosts are needed to help meet demand.
Currently, there are known to be around 1,100 Ukrainian
refugees who have joined Derbyshire hosts.
Prospective hosts need to be able to offer
accommodation for a minimum of six months,
and those who are successfully matched to
Ukrainian guests are offered a £350 per month
‘thank you’ payment.
Hosts should also expect to provide a basic
level of support including welcoming their
guests to the local area and helping with tasks
such as registering with a GP, accessing local and public
services, and opening a bank account.
Contact ukrainesupport@derbyshire.gov.uk Anyone who
would like to offer support other than accommodation should
email the same address.

The Dalton Roofing team from left to right: Rachel, Ruby, Paul, Phil Dalton MIoR, Will, Helen, Olivia.
A head for heights
WHEN a business has been at the top of the tree for 32 years, it could perhaps be
excused for taking things a little easier and continuing in the manner in which it always
has done.
That’s most certainly not the case at family-run Dalton Roofing, a company which will never rest
on its laurels. Indeed, after such a lengthy success story, business founder Phil Dalton is always
looking ahead to write the next chapter.
That’s why Dalton Roofing is continually on the lookout to add even more quality and experience
to its 25-strong team of employees. Proud members of the National Federation of Roofing
Contractors, the business is always looking to expand and recruit more time-served skilled roofers.
One of the latest craftsmen to join the Sheepbridge-based team is site manager Paul Stephenson.
Paul, from Sheffield, can count on 36 years experience in roofing.
He said “Today, almost everything is mechanically fixed, whereas in the old days everything was
fixed with sand and cement.
“Many of today’s roofers haven’t been taught the older methods, but from time to time, on
certain older properties we have to return to the old ways. It’s something I like doing because it’s
obviously what I was brought up with. But a trowel is something of a mystery to people coming
into the trade nowadays!”
Paul said he was introduced to the world of roofing by chance.
“I was working somewhere else and my friend, who was a roofer, asked me if I wanted to help
him. I said, ‘Yes, okay,’ and that was in 1986.
“I started learning more and more about the job and that’s something that carries on today. I still
don’t know everything as there is always something new coming out, but I always enjoy doing the
best job that I can.”
Having a head for heights is a pre-requisite for the trade and Paul says that although most jobs
are on the rooftops of private houses, he’s also done his share of work on church towers,
sometimes at a height of 200ft.
“I’m okay with the height but the most important thing is not to forget any tools, because it’s a
long way back down to the van to fetch them!” he said.
The good news for Dalton Roofing is that Paul has also taken on a training role with the
company, passing on some of his vast knowledge to the next generation of roofers.
Formed in 1990, when Philip Dalton was just 20 years old, Dalton Roofing has been keeping
roofs over the heads of thousands of people in Sheffield, Rotherham, Chesterfield and the Peak
District ever since. With established premises in Sheffield, the company has been delighted with its
recent expansion into Chesterfield.
Phil runs the business alongside his wife, Helen (Financial Controller), children Olivia (Office Manager)
and Will (Foreman), Paul (Site Manager), Rachel (Office Manager) and Ruby (Office Administrator).
First World War hero finally
The DNA from a Chesterfield man helped to
identify the remains of a soldier found more
than 100 years on from his death as his
grandfather. Now he has been given a funeral
with full military honours. Deborah Wain reports
P
RIVATE Herbert Greaves, 28, from Walkley,
Sheffield, is thought to have been wounded in a
World War I battle near Arras, in France, and died
before he could have further treatment.
In the chaos of conflict, he was never properly buried, and his
remains were eventually found under a footpath outside Heninel
Communal Cemetery Extension - but not until 2019.
Rosie Barron and colleagues, from the Ministry of Defence’s
Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre, also known as the
‘MOD War Detectives’, tracked down members of Pte Greaves’
family, confirming his identity via a DNA test.
One of Pte Greaves’ three surviving grandchildren, David
Dickson, from Dronfield, together with wife June and sons Lee
and Simon, travelled to France earlier this month to see Pte
Greaves buried with full military honours at the cemetery.
The emotional service was organised by the JCCC and
supported by 5th Battalion The Rifles who bore the coffin.
Pte Greaves was born in Walkley, Sheffield, in 1889. He was
married to Jane and they had a son, who was also named
Herbert, and a daughter, also Jane. He joined The King's Own
Yorkshire Light Infantry following the outbreak of World War I. He
initially served with 2nd Battalion, was wounded in September,
1916, and at some stage transferred to 6th Battalion. He died on
15th May, 1917, during the Battle of Arras.
Pte Greaves’ remains were uncovered in 2019 during
maintenance work on the footpath outside the cemetery where
they had laid for 102 years.
Based on the location of the find, JCCC determined it was most
likely the remains belonged to a soldier of 6th Battalion KOYLI.
The soldier had been bandaged, so it was considered likely that
he had been wounded and treated prior to his death.
Further research found that although 6th Battalion were in the
line east of Heninel between 6th and 15th May, 1917, on 10th May
their position in the line had changed, when they took over
positions in the line further south. They remained in these new
positions until being relieved on 15th May.
When their positions changed, so did their medical evacuation
Pte Herbert Greaves
chain. From 10th May, 1917, they began to use the crossroads
north of Heninel Communal Cemetery Extension, known as
‘Hairpin Bend’ as a loading post for ambulances.
JCCC found it likely the soldier had been wounded after that
date, been treated in the line and then brought to Hairpin Bend
to be placed on an ambulance for evacuation. He may then have
died there and been left at Heninel Communal Cemetery
Extension for burial.
Once the remains had been linked with 6th Battalion KOYLI, and
a likely casualty identified, the investigators traced Pte Greaves’
grandson, David’s cousin, Alan Greaves, in Walton, Chesterfield.
laid to rest
DNA testing against the remains was carried out, confirming the
identity of the casualty as Pte Greaves. Other relatives were told
the amazing news as David and Alan had lost touch over the
years.
David said: “Elated is the word I’d use. When our son read out
the email from Rosie Barron at JCCC to say they had actually
discovered the remains of our grandfather, it was quite
emotional. He suddenly became a real person to us.
“We managed to connect with our cousin, whom we hadn’t
seen for many years, who did the DNA test. He managed to find
a photo of our grandfather amongst his father’s papers so we
could put a face to the name.”
David’s sister, Jane Needham, another of Herbert’s
grandchildren, was also closely following events from her home
in Meadowhead, Sheffield. Pte Greaves had a fourth grandchild,
Robert, who has sadly passed away.
The ceremony took place in pouring rain and David and his
family were invited to a reception afterwards hosted by the local
Mayor.
Rosie, said: “Pte Greaves remained missing for over 100 years,
although he lay just metres from the entrance to Heninel
Communal Cemetery Extension. Having come so close to having
a known grave, in the heat of war, he became lost.
“He now rests amongst his comrades and his story is complete.
Although not all
of Pte Greaves’
grandchildren
were able to
attend his burial
service, it has
been a privilege
to meet them
and to have
played a part in
solving the
mystery
Grandson David Dickson is
presented with the Union Flag
from Pte Greaves’ coffin
surrounding
their
grandfather’s
death.”
The service was conducted by Rev Martin Robbins CF, Chaplain
to 9th Regiment Royal Logistic Corps.
He said: “Pte Greaves is just one of many young men and
women who answered the call of the nation in its time of need.
He typifies the selfless commitment of his generation who put
themselves in harm’s way to protect the way of life of others
whom he would never know.
“To that end, it is only fitting and right that we lay him to rest
alongside his brothers in arms, with the dignity and respect he
deserves.
“I feel incredibly honoured to be asked to do this on behalf of
his family and fellow service men and women, who continue in
the that same service of selfless commitment, protecting our
nation and its way of life.”
David had known his grandfather had died in battle but
assumed he had a stone somewhere in France.
Pte Greaves’ grave is now be marked by a headstone provided
by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, who will care for
his final resting place in perpetuity.
Director for the France Area at the Commonwealth War Graves
Commission, Xavier Puppinck, said on the day of the ceremony:
“Pte Greaves paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting for his country
105 years ago. It is our honour to be part of today’s ceremony to
lay this brave man to rest, and to renew our commitment to
remember him and his fallen comrades.”
The Destination Chesterfield chair presents his
monthly update for Twist magazine readers
I
N the blink of an eye, Christmas is upon us once
more. It seems to have come around so quickly this
year, but maybe a dose of festive cheer is what we all
need to lift our spirits in these times of political and
economic uncertainty.
Chesterfield has, once again, risen to the challenge and
delivered a packed programme of events and entertainment
for all the family, from the annual lights switch-on,
pantomime and Santa cruises on the canal to the Elf Trail
and, of course, shopping.
With the high street facing a tough battle for market share,
shopping local for gifts at Christmas and, indeed throughout
the year, is critical to our high street not only surviving but
thriving.
This Christmas I urge you to have a digital detox and instead
discover in person what our high street has to offer. I can
assure you it has something for everyone – from independent
retailers and market stall holders to high street chains, all
of which provide something unique to suit all tastes and
pockets.
I am confident that Chesterfield’s businesses can provide
for your entire Christmas – from gifts under the tree to the
food on your table and the drink in your hand. We really
do have it all and much of it is sourced and produced
locally.
‘Friendly is the word that
springs to the mind of so
many people when they
describe Chesterfield’
Time is precious. Rather than being glued to a screen during
the festive season, make time to explore Chesterfield with
friends and family this year.
The beautiful and thought-provoking Festival of Christmas
Trees at the Crooked Spire Church is a must. Seeing charities,
businesses, volunteer groups and schools come together for
this magical festival highlights why ‘friendly’ is the word that
springs to the mind of so many people when they describe
Chesterfield.
Our collaborative approach to developing Chesterfield and
creating a bright future for people who live and work here is
what makes this town so great. Working together, is definitely
the way forward.
We can all do more though. So, this Christmas, I urge you to
take a trip down the cobbled streets of Chesterfield, visit the
market, our shops and stores and then warm yourself in one of
our many fantastic pubs, cafés and restaurants, and soak up,
the atmosphere.
Chesterfield really does have it all, but let’s make sure that,
together, we use it, not lose it.
Merry Christmas!
Truth about our Spire
Dear Twist,
READING your entertaining piece on the dear old Crooked
Spire in your recent issue reminded me of the time I visited
Godalming.
I had previously learned that the spires at Chesterfield and a few
other locations were copies of an original at Amiens; so, one day in
1960, I was in the area and decided to pay a visit to Godalming.
On arrival, I found an obviously well-built, stable structure not in
the least likely to collapse any time soon,
I was told that over the centuries, due to weight of the lead, some
minor distortions had occurred in the frame but that was all.
Interestingly, Godalming spire has a "broached" base; that is,
additional triangular panels included to convert the octagonal spire
into a square one at the point where it meets the tower. The point
here is that the purely cosmetic feature would have added
substantial costs.
Anyway, I left firmly convinced that the cause of the Crooked
Spire's magnificent "kink", twist and leans maybe summarised in
four words: ‘the money ran out’! Not very romantic I know, sorry
about the devils and the virgins!
Whatever the cause, the important point is that the Crooked Spire
is an asset, and we are lucky to have it. I wonder if the residents of
Godalming wish they had one?
Murders in the shadow of
Flashback to the early 1960s when gay
men were persecuted and branded as
criminals and a serial murderer was on
the loose locally. Derbyshire journalist and
author Alan Hurndall (pictured) shares the
background to his brand new true-crime
thriller, The Crooked Spire Killings
A
S an investigative author specialising in local true
crime, after writing about the murders of a Peak
District family at Pottery Cottage, I wondered what
could possibly be next. Surely nothing could be as
dramatic as the evil slaughter by escaped prisoner
William Hughes? I was wrong.
I was contacted by Angela Fry, the widow of a former colleague
on the Sheffield Telegraph, who was clearing out her loft and
had stumbled upon her late husband Tony’s cuttings from his
days as a reporter. Would I be interested in reading them as a
basis for a possible future book?
I collected a cardboard box from her home in Bradway. It
contained a file of Tony’s 60-year-old yellowed cuttings, all
neatly assembled in date order, his immaculate shorthand
notebooks, even his snuff box. I sat down in my Dronfield home
and began reading.
They centred on a trial in 1965 of Michael Copeland, a former
soldier from Chesterfield, who was accused of three brutal
murders. Two of the victims were men he picked up in
Chesterfield, drove to the Peak District, murdered, and dumped
a few yards apart in Clod Hall Lane. The third was a 15-year-old
boy stabbed to death near a British Army base in Germany.
The more I found out, the more fascinating and disturbing it
became. It remains one of Britain’s most historic criminal
Victims William Elliott (left) and George Stobbs
Michael Copeland
investigations, and the biggest ever carried out by police in
Derbyshire. Over five years, around 100,000 people in
Chesterfield and surrounding towns and villages were
questioned.
The 1960s will of course be remembered as the decade of
revolution in sex equality, civil rights, fashion, music and social
attitudes. But as the new decade dawned, conscription was only
slowly being phased out, the death penalty was still in place and
homosexuality was illegal.
Many male sexual relationships had to be secretive, liaisons
confined to seedy places like public lavatories, dark alleyways
and isolated sports in the countryside. Gay men were derided
and despised by the public and blackmailed and bullied by the
police.
Copeland was not only homophobic, but harboured a hatred
for both heterosexual and homosexual sex. The town of
Chesterfield came under national media spotlight.
My latest book – the Crooked Spire Killings – follows the police
investigation from Chesterfield to the North German plains of
Verden where Copeland served as a driver with No 1 Signal
Regiment of the Royal Signals.
18

the Crooked Spire
Sunday,
Road closed. Clod Hall Lane where Copeland dumped the bodies
It hasn’t been an easy project. I
discovered that the case files are sealed
from public view by the National Archive
until, wait for it, the year 2050 – more than
90-years after the first murder.
Attempts to gain access under the
Freedom of Information Act have been
thwarted by both the Director of Public
Prosecutions and Derbyshire Police.
The investigation was riddled with
controversy with claims of harassment of
homosexual men by police, accusations by
Copeland that he was hounded day and
night by detectives until he cracked, and
an inappropriate relationship with some of
the officers in the case who took him out
on the town, gave him money and helped
him find work.
One of the more pleasing personal
aspects was tracking down the family of
one of the victims and explaining the full
truth of what happened to their loved one,
branded a “pervert” by the press and
police.
George Stobbs, an industrial chemist
living in Chesterfield and working for the
former Trebor factory, was married and a
loving father of two sons. But he was
leading a secret life, at night seeking out the
Alan Hurndall’s book
company of other gay men in the town.
After his murder, his widow returned to London to train as a teacher. His sons were away at
boarding school at the time of his murder and were never told the full details of what
happened to their father, a former Army intelligence officer, who played cards with them and
who took them fishing.
George’s grandaughter believes he visited her in a series of
dreams urging her to seek out the truth of his death. This led to her
stumbling by chance on a chapter about his murder in a true crime
book. She then had the delicate task of telling her grandfather -
then in his 50s - what actually happened to his father.
Jerry Stobbs, now in his 70s, said to me: “Thank you so much for
helping me to come to terms with the full details of dad’s murder. I
tend to bottle things away but now I can face up to how he died
and the life he led.”
• The Crooked Spire Killings was published on November 1st,
priced £11.95. For details on how to purchase a copy, email
June 12th, 1960:
Fred Clarke lived in a small
detached house on Park Road,
Chesterfield, opposite Queen’s
Park. It was a delightful spot.
Derbyshire played half their cricket
matches there and in his garden in
summer he often heard the ‘thwack’
of leather on willow and the ripple of
polite applause drifting over the park
perimeters.
But it was a far more dramatic sound
that woke him in the middle of the
night - a loud crash which he would
later describe as a small explosion.
This was followed by complete
silence - ‘no footsteps, no moans...
nothing.’
He sprang out of bed and looked
out of the window. A bubble car had
overturned on the road, having
obviously collided with a lamp-post.
He rushed out fearing that the driver
might be trapped inside. The vehicle
was smashed and twisted. Its lights
were off. The engine had stopped
running but was contracting gently.
The road was covered in debris -
fragments of glass, a pair of hornrimmed
spectacles, a quantity of
boiled sweets, and a lower set of
dentures.
What Fred thought must have been
petrol flowed from the wreckage and
down along the gutter, but strangely it
smelt more like vinegar. In fact, it
would transpire that a bottle of
Sarson’s malt had exploded. He
dropped to his haunches to see if
anyone was inside. Empty.
Bizarrely, a pair of shoes, with the
laces tied, was wedged on the floor of
the driver’s seat as if someone had
stepped out of them. What appeared
to be bracken littered the seats and
floor. There were splashes of blood
on the head-lining behind the driver’s
seat and another larger blood stain in
the centre of the seat. There were
also blood stains outside the vehicle -
around the smashed window and on
the window frame.
The street was deserted and lights
came on. A neighbour, Len Robinson,
appeared in his dressing gown.
“What’s happened, Fred?”
“Call the police,” he shouted back.
The nation’s favourite sandwich is...
Move over bacon butty, the UK has
a brand new favourite sarnie
C
HRISTMAS may be just around the corner, but it
doesn’t mean to say we are going to spend all our
time eating roast turkey, cranberry sauce, pigs in blankets,
trifle and Christmas Pud!
The festive holiday is also a time when we like to be creative in
the kitchen with our sandwiches!
But what will we be putting between our slices of bread this
year? Food ordering app Foodhub celebrated National Sandwich
Day on November 3rd by commissioning a survey into the
nation’s favourite sandwiches.
And the research revealed that the classic cheese toastie is
the UK’s favourite sandwich. In a closely fought contest, it
knocked previous winner - the bacon butty - off top spot.
Rounding off the top three is the classic cheese sandwich.
The result does mean some hugely popular classics missed out
on a top three placing - the famous sausage sandwich, prawn
mayo sandwich and egg mayo sandwich all failed to dent the
nation’s top three.
Elsewhere, in an age-old debate, is it a cob? Is it a barmcake? Is
it a bap? Is it a butty?
The nation has finally spoken… it’s a bread roll!
Almost a third of the UK (31%) named the controversial sandwich
vessel a bread roll, with breadcake landing in second place (11%)
and a bun (10%) finishing in third.
Regionally of course, the results varied, as the East Midlands
opted for cob, the North East went for bun and Scotland said
morning roll.
sandwiches are still number one, with nearly a fifth of the UK
saying the sandwich is their go-to lunch.
One in five of those surveyed named mayo the nation’s
favourite sandwich condiment, followed by butter (16%), ketchup
(14%), hot sauce (11%) and salad cream (10%).
Elsewhere, there is a generational divide on what bread we like
our sandwiches on. Those aged 65 and over overwhelmingly
state wholemeal is the best (18%), whereas those aged between
25 and 34 named sourdough (10%) number one.
Tried & Tested
Step this way for fun and fitness
F
OR any woman who loves dance,
musicals and all things jazzy, I’ve
just discovered a place where you can
forget about everything else for an
hour, have a giggle and step out like
no-one is watching.
And what a great experience my lunchtime
session at Katy Robinson Fitness Fusion was.
Dropping in on one of their famous ‘On
Broadway’® Dance Fitness classes, I
received a particularly warm welcome from
all the ladies. Katy introduced me the to
class and everyone was enthusiastic and
friendly.
Everyone had their own reason for being
there. Some told me they were carers and
this gets them out of their house, offering a
chance to laugh and not think about
anything other than the dance steps.
Some used to dance but didn’t want to
return to it with any pressure, just happy to
join in and keep on dancing.
A younger woman explained she lacked
self-confidence, and this has helped build her self-esteem. She
has made new friendships and they also socialise outside the
class.
Making new friends and having fun getting fit seem to be
the main reason for joining. I loved the fact there were no
mirrors, and no judgment; even if you have two left feet, no-one
cares.
Katy just loves what she does, teaching dance, and it came
across with her enthusiasm. She never stopped smiling and just
encouraged everyone to have fun.
There was plenty of laughter, especially when we were using
props such as hats, canes and feather boas with proper musical
dance routines.
Group members learn a new dance routine every four weeks
and during my session we danced to Take That’s ‘Let it Shine’.
They also showed me the show line ‘kick’ which I loved, feeling
like a real showgirl. And at the end they demonstrated to me one
of the routines they had recently learned which was to ‘Fame’
I never stopped smiling, and nor did the girls who were amazing
and I was envious of how good they all were.
Although they were all different ages and sizes, no-one cared
and everyone just got along.
Magazine sales team member
One member, who had kept a count of the
steps, did 6,600 in one session - a great way
to get fit and it doesn't even feel like
exercise.
Many of the class members were local, but
others travel from as far away as Worksop to
enjoy the Katy Robinson dance experience.
And even if you can't get to a class, Katy
offers lessons on Zoom - nine were at home
joining in the class I attended.
I would recommend it to anyone who
doesn't like the idea of going to a gym but
Plea for more Schoolreaders
C
HILDREN’S literacy charity Schoolreaders is
looking for more volunteers who can help spread
the joy of reading to children in primary schools around
Chesterfield.
A survey of young people by the National Literacy Trust
revealed that reading enjoyment had reached a 15 year low,
rallying slightly in the pandemic before declining again by 2022,
especially amongst those from disadvantaged backgrounds and
amongst boys. The Annual Literacy survey found that fewer than
one in two children aged eight to 18 enjoyed reading with only
28% reading daily.
Schoolreaders is looking for volunteers of all ages – from
students to the retired - who can listen to children read in a local
primary school, especially at those schools where children
require support the most. Volunteers are asked to listen to
children read once a week during term time.
Worryingly, one in four children leave primary school every
summer unable to read to the expected standard and the
Schoolreaders scheme is now more in demand than ever.
Schoolreaders volunteers act as trusted role models alongside
the class teachers, not only helping children improve their
reading but also by being a positive influence.
Jane Whitbread, founder of Schoolreaders, said: “Children who
leave primary school unable to read well can’t access their
secondary schooling fully which will disadvantage them for life.
“One in seven adults have poor literacy and cannot read
‘Dig deep’ is local
foodbank’s call
A
MID the cost-of-living crisis, Bridge Help is urging local businesses to dig
deep and donate to its annual Christmas collection for Chesterfield
Foodbank.
With food banks across Britain warning of a “completely unsustainable” surge in demand
that will prevent them feeding the hungriest families this winter, Bridge Help has brought
forward its annual appeal in order to collect as much as possible.
Launched in 2020, Bridge Help’s annual fundraising appeal has enabled the commercial
finance company to donate more than £5,500 of food and toiletries to Chesterfield
Foodbank.
Bridge Help is inviting people to donate either money or non-perishable food and toiletries.
All monetary donations will be used to buy much-needed items and donated to Chesterfield
Foodbank.
The annual appeal is organised by Phoebe Sellars, who is a business development manager
at Bridge Help, as well as a trustee of Chesterfield Citizens Advice in her spare time.
Phoebe said: “As a volunteer for Chesterfield Citizens Advice, I am hearing first-hand how
the cost-of-living crisis is affecting people in the community. Some of the stories are
heartbreaking. Rather than sit and wait until December we decided to bring our appeal
forward. This will hopefully enable us to collect as much as possible and make a very real
difference to local people who will be forced to use this vital service over winter.”
The Trussell Trust, which supports Chesterfield Foodbank, has warned of ‘an accelerated
crisis across the UK, with more families being forced to the doors of food banks in need of
emergency food.’
Chesterfield Foodbank has already seen a rise in demand this year which has resulted in
the opening an additional centre in Hasland earlier this year to accommodate demand.
In a survey by the Independent Food Aid Network UK, nearly 90% of the organisations
representing 169 food banks said demand had risen since April 2022 and 87% said they had
been hit with supply issues.
Donations to the Bridge Help Chesterfield Foodbank Appeal can be made until Friday, 16th
December. You can drop off donations at Bridge Help’s offices on Old Brick Works Lane, off
Sheffield Road. Call ahead to arrange a drop off time. Call Phoebe on 0333 303 4681.
“There is no substitute for face-to-face interaction and support
when it comes to reading. Our volunteers provide a crucial
supplement to classroom teaching and are welcomed by schools
- and the children.
“If more children gain pleasure from reading from an early age
and their reading fluency and confidence improves too,
communities and society will reap the benefits.”
On the wild
side of
Christmas
As we rush headlong into the commercial
season which Christmas has now become,
Prof Ian Rotherham says it is worthwhile
pausing to consider origins and meanings
F
OR our ancestors, the long,
dark nights and the
shortening days had profound
implications and impacts.
Without modern-day light pollution
for example, the night skies were full
of myriads of stars and in the depth
of winter assumed a much greater
significance than we experience
today.
Furthermore, with the days getting
ever shorter, there would be worries
about diminished life-force and the
green mantle of nature. Would these
facets of wild nature recover and
what might be the implications for
future fertility, productivity and
survival?
Add to this the bitter cold of a
northern winter and we can
understand how the seasons might
impact on earlier peoples, our
ancestors.
Wildlife would also be affected by
seasonal cold and associated
hardship, and as today, might seek
sustenance by association with
people. The practice of feeding the
winter birds came quite late in the
19th century but did jar somewhat
with the Victorian ideas of frugality
and careful housekeeping.
Celebrations at midwinter developed long before any concepts
of Christian Christmas had emerged. Both in the Mediterranean
26
Father Christmas surrounded by
green leaves and berries
with the Romans, and in northern
Europe with the Saxons and the
Scandinavians for instance, the
winter solstice and the days around
this were hugely significant.
Communities gathered together to
celebrate the midwinter, to feast,
and to make offerings to their gods
and to nature.
The Yule log was a north European
idea to burn throughout the period
of the celebrations. Evergreen plants
were very important because they
kept alive the spirit of life and of
greenery during the protracted
darkness, and so we see wreaths of
holly, and sprogs of mistletoe, for
instance.
The latter was particularly
significant because it grows not in
the earth but in the tree canopy and
the Celtic Druids regarded this as
being of the highest spiritual
importance.
The greenwood and the forest
were big influences on the minds of
the northern and western
Europeans. It was believed that the
deciduous oakman and the
evergreen hollyman did battle for
the life spirit through the seasons. At
midwinter the hollyman’s powers
began to diminish and the oakman prevailed.
Life and fertility recovered in the emerging springtime. By May

Tw st
Gathering mistletoe and feeding the birds Victorian style
More holly leaves and berries
A family taking home their yule log
Day, the celebrations and rites of new fertility came into full swing.
At Midsummer, the power balance changed again and over the subsequent
months the oakman began to lose out to the hollyman who reigned supreme
into the winter months.
And so, the circle of life continued with the seasons and throughout the years.
For northern cultures, the winter solstice was the key and when Christianity
emerged as a driving force throughout the continent of Europe, the clever trick
was simply to adopt the dates and times of the old beliefs and morph them into
the new faith.
Yet the pagan symbolism survived, and we see it in churches and cathedrals
throughout the land. Greenery is taken into churches as Christmas decorations,
as we hang mistletoe and holly as adornments.
Carvings in wood and stone have representations of pre-Christian symbols
too, green men and oak leaves, for example. The Christmas tree was a
Victorian latecomer, and Santa Claus dressed in red was decidedly 20thcentury
American!
Make sure your car is
ready for winter
with the help of
Eden Tyres & Servicing in Chesterfield
At this time of the year, it’s so important that your car is ready for the cold, dark roads.
Making sure your tyres, bulbs, wipers and car battery are in good order is the best way
of avoiding a breakdown or accident.
Tyres not only need to have enough tread, it’s also vital that they’re set to the correct
pressure to avoid handling and braking issues on winter roads. Many drivers simply
don’t check their tyre pressures regularly, which puts them and other road users at risk.
Tyres can lose pressure for a number of reasons, including a sudden drop in
temperature during the winter months. It’s advisable to get the pressures checked once
a month or before a long journey, especially if you're carrying more passengers or have
extra weight such as shopping or Christmas presents. Not only can low tyre pressure
cause accidents, if you get pulled over by the police and all your tyres are unsuitably
inflated, you could face disqualification from driving and up to £10,000 in fines.
The easiest way to make sure your tyre pressures are set correctly is by calling in for a
free winter check. It doesn’t take long for our team to carry out some simple safety
checks which will give you peace of mind in knowing your car is safe to drive in cold
conditions.
Redundancy uncovered
Speak to someone as soon as possible
when facing a potential redundancy
situation to ensure that you understand the
process and can make informed decisions
R
EDUNDANCY is something that we hear far too often,
but it is an unfortunate fact that most people will go
through this at least once in their working life.
Being fully informed on your redundancy rights is essential if
you are facing redundancy by your employer.
The law sets out the situations in which a redundancy can
arise, but even if the situation you are facing falls within the
legal definition of a redundancy, the law still requires your
employer to adopt a fair and reasonable procedure.
Your rights
For example, your employer must be able to show that it is
the role that is being made redundant, not the individual.
Your redundancy rights include the following:
• Your redundancy payment (dependant on your age,
salary and length of service).
• Reasonable time off to look for another job.
• A fair selection process and redundancy procedure.
A proper and meaningful redundancy process needs to be
planned in advance, with sufficient time given to communicate
the proposals to those at risk of redundancy before
commencing the redundancy consultation process. If you feel
that this did not happen to you, then you may have a case for
unfair dismissal and you should seek legal advice.
If your employer goes into administration however, you may
not have been consulted but unfortunately if no-one steps in to
buy the business from the administrator, you will normally be
made redundant. Your employer would usually be insolvent at
that point, meaning that there may not be any funds available
to make redundancy payments.
Payments
In this situation you can claim these payments from the
National Insurance Fund within six months of your dismissal.
The National Insurance Fund is operated and managed by the
Redundancy Payments Service, to whom employees make their
application for repayment.
Some clients we have helped and supported, have been able
to remain in employment within a different role, whilst others
have secured the best possible exit terms, sometimes under a
settlement agreement. We have also gone on to help clients
pursue claims of unfair dismissal where we believe the client
has a case.
The best advice we can give is to speak to someone as soon
as possible when facing a potential redundancy situation
to ensure that you understand the process and can make
informed decisions.
