GIFT LITERACY – IT’S THE BEST YOU CAN DO
In Rotary we celebrate September as month of Basic Education
and Literacy. Being literate is one of the basic requirements
of a meaningful life. According to UNESCO Literacy is
the “ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate
and compute, using printed and written materials associated
with varying contexts”.
India is home to the world's largest population of illiterates – a
staggering 37% of all illiterate worldwide are Indians. Literacy
rate has increased since independence from 12% to 77%, yet this is clearly not enough and an estimated
60 lakh children are still out-of-school. Rotary has taken note of this grave reality and realises
it as the root cause of our problems. After tackling Polio, it has picked up this enormous task as a
main priority.
The Rotary India Literacy Mission has been launched to achieve the target of 100% literacy in our
country. It's comprehensive program “TEACH” encompasses all aspects of this issue. What does it
do? It trains and recognises outstanding teachers, establishes E- Learning centres, educates adult
non- literates, sends drop-out children back to school and upgrades school to create “Happy
Schools”. Rotary, at all levels, is doing extraordinary work in all these areas of concern.
While we are busy working for Total Literacy, concurrently, we should also peep into our own personal
state of education. While Literacy is the ability to read and write, education is to be able to reason,
to use reading and writing ability to your benefit and to be able to get knowledge. We generally
equate education with our degrees, but our qualifications does not guarantee a thinking and reasoning
mind. Albert Einstein once said “Education is not the learning of facts, but training of the mind to
think”. Do we ever ruminate on the information that we receive? Do we question its source and validity?
Do we use our education in daily life? While dealing with others ? While taking decisions? Or
while teaching others?
Education is an overall development - morally, emotionally and intellectually. An engineer coming the
wrong way, holding up traffic, is certainly not educated. Our education reflects in everything we do,
say or think. We may have finished with our studies but education never comes to an end. Each day,
each experience, each event, educates us, but only if we take in the picture with an open, thoughtful
and questioning mind.
So while you go about making someone literate, don't stop educating yourself. India needs not only
literate citizens but educated ones too.
and infinite intelligence within us to find the solutions together lead us to Go BEYOND THE
HORIZON.
Rtr. Nami Jain
Rotaract Editor
Hello, Namaskar!
In most of our meetings, we always address members
with the words "the August gathering". In Rotary, the
month of August is designated for Membership and its
development. So we are all supposed to gather more
members for the August gatherings, throughout the year
and for the years to come. With this in mind RIP Shekhar
Mehta has made a very workable appeal “Each One
Bring One” for this year.
Since a few years the membership of Rotary has come to
a standstill at around 1.2 million. This year as the team “Change Makers” let's take the tally to
1.3 million. Yes I understand, we can not just add anyone for the sake of adding. The simple
thought is, if a Rotarian brings in one of his or her friend to Rotary, we are assured about the
quality of the person. Whatever our period in Rotary has been, if we feel that we have enjoyed
being a Rotarian, we should understand that asking a friend to be a Rotarian, is like gifting him/
her, a gift of unlimited friendships. As a Rotarian you are assured to have a friend in each
continent and across 210 countries. Just wear your Rotary pin proudly.
As District Governor I have a dream of making our district “Each One Bring One District”. But
hey, rest assured, I am not going to pressure any of the clubs, and neither will our Membership
team pressure any club or person for this. It is a dream we are seeing, whether to make our
dream a reality is in the hands of all the Rotarians and Rotaractors of our district.
We have identified some cities, some areas around existing clubs, these are the suggestions as
result of various discussions amongst the Presidents and Rotarians, where we can also have a
few new clubs. We look forward to have these new clubs to be chartered not later than
February, and seek help from DGE and DGN to groom them further. I look forward to have
participation of maximum Rotarians in bringing more friends into Rotary.
Come September, and we have a month designated for “Literacy”. After the success in
eradication of Polio, now the focus should be on Making India Literate. In a recent meeting with
PM Narendra Modi, RIP Shekhar Meha had discussed about this very area of focus. Kindly get
connected to District Literacy Committee Chair Tushar Shah for the various projects to be
undertaken during this month.
Let us be part of this ambitious project of making “India Literate by year 2025!”
Let’s us do our part and Soar Beyond The Horizon. Keep Rotaracting ….!
DRR Vatsal Khimasiya
I am sure you are having an enriching experience as you
Serve to Change Lives. One of the ways you can make the
greatest change in a person’s life is to help them learn to read.
Literacy opens up the world to us. It makes us better informed
about life in our own communities and opens vistas to other
cultures. Reading and writing connects people and gives us
another way to express our love for one another.
September is Basic Education and Literacy Month in Rotary.
Enhancing literacy skills is critical in our pursuit of reducing
poverty, improving health, and promoting peace. In fact, if all
students in low-income countries left school with basic reading
skills, it would result in a significant cut in global poverty rates.
Without education, illiterate children become illiterate adults.
Today, 14 percent of the world’s adult population — 762 million
people — lack basic reading and writing skills. Two-thirds
of that group are women. Literacy and numeracy skills are essential to obtaining better housing,
health care, and jobs over a lifetime.
Especially for girls and women, literacy can be a life-or-death issue. If all girls completed their primary
education, there would be far fewer maternal deaths. And a child is more likely to survive
past age 5 if he or she is born to a mother who can read. Improving outcomes for more people
worldwide is possible only if countries remove barriers to education for girls. The economic argument
for doing so is clear: In some countries where schooling is geared toward boys, the cost of
missed economic opportunity is more than $1 billion per year.
Empowering people through education is among the boldest goals we have as Rotarians. We
don’t have to travel far from our homes to encounter those whose lives are being curtailed because
they struggle with reading, rely on others to read for them, or cannot write anything more
than their own name.
Starting this month, consider how your club can Serve to Change Lives through literacy: Support
local organizations that offer free programs to support adult literacy or local language learning, or
that provide teachers with professional development centered around reading and writing. Become
literacy mentors, or work with an organization like the Global Partnership for Education to
increase learning opportunities for children around the world. Have conversations with local
schools and libraries to see how your club can support their existing programs or help create
needed ones in your community.
In India, the TEACH program, a successful collaboration between the country’s Rotary clubs and
its government, has demonstrated how to scale up literacy efforts to reach millions of children.
And at a time when schools across India were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the
program’s e-learning component reached more than 100 million children through national
television.
Literacy is the first step out of poverty. As Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has noted, “One
child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.”
The Miyawaki method is an
ideal method for growing
forests in a shorter period of
time of about 15-20 years,
unlike naturally grown forest
that take about a century to
grow. This technique also
includes smaller urban green
patches which are easier to
find in our land starved cities
and easier to maintain. Rotary
has now formally taken up
environment as a focus area
and DG Santosh Pradhan is
giving full importance to this area by signing of an MOU with a leading NGO for
cultivation of urban forests.
RC Amreli Gir has taken up the issue and had developed two Miyawaki Forests of
100 Sq. Meters each at the Deaf and Dumb School Amreli. According to President
Devdutt this method used for tree
plantation is an innovative way to plant
more trees in a small area compared to
the traditional planting method. It is
seen that approx 350 trees can be
planted in 100 square metre area
whereas only 80-100 trees can be
planted by traditional method thus
helping Rotary’s new area of focus -
Environment.
Once planted and taken care of it will be
self sustaining after a period of 12 to 18 months. The trees are selected depending on
surrounding environment and local fruit bearing trees are given importance as they
attract and help the bird population as well.
The months of August is a very important month in
the calendar of Rotary as this month is designated for
Membership and new Club development. Quality
members and TRF are the main assets of Rotary and
taking in new quality members is what keeps Rotary
moving forward.
Shekhar Mehta recently tweeted “This year, each of
us has an opportunity to extend the gift of
membership to others who can benefit from Rotary
and help us increase our impact. I ask all Rotarians to
join the initiative “Each One, Bring One””.
This call has been taken up by the “Changemaker
Presidents” and within two months of the new year
RID 3060 has added 260 members growing from
4,8181 to 5,018 members. DG Santosh and
district membership team headed by PP
Amardeep Bunet are inspiring and motivating
clubs to grow. A brand new clubs, Vapi Phoenix
has also been chartered in the very first month,
with 60 members on its roll.
RC Bhavnagar, a leading club of 3060, has added
a commendable 14 members to its member tally
taking it to an inspiring 143 members. President Bhavesh Shah says “Membership can be
considered as the life line of any organisation,
so also in Rotary too. RC Bhavnagar has
always been keen to increase membership as
well as to retain it. Our goal was a 10%
increase and in two months we inducted 15
new quality members, with few more in the
pipeline. We wish to cross the number of 151
which will further strengthen our club to do
more projects”.
RC Chikhli River Front has welcomed 10 new
members into their fold taking their strength to
78. President Naresh Patel says “Our club
completed 379 Service Projects in 2020-21 and
within two months of this year we have done around 60 service
projects. This is all due to the commitment of our members. The
new members are well established, doing well in their own fields
and are inclined to contributed towards the various projects of
the Cub.”
The Club has many permanent projects like the Aksharyaan
Service, Manav Jyot: wall of humanity, maintaining 500+ trees
on state highway, women empowerment centre - tailoring
institute and free ambulance service. They have done massive
work for COVID patients and are recipient of GG for Cancer
Detection Mobile Unit which will be functional from October.
RC Baroda Metro has added 12 members taking its tally to 48
members. President Vrajesh Jindal says he is very satisfied with
this addition and aims to increase the member tally further.
RC Surat West inducted 13 members sponsored by five members. President Mitesh Bhagat say
“Rotary has always been a correct platform when it comes to serving the society. The current
pandemic has developed the attitude of human service in many people. We spread the motto of
Rotary to our contact sphere and had an overwhelming number of friends asking to join Rotary.
The board scrutinised the entries to admit members with true sense of service”.
This year RC Sachin has also put membership retention and development as a top priority .
According to President Pankaj Timbadia “Under the able guidance of DG Santosh Pradhan and
DMC Amardeep Singh, our Club Membership Chair IPP Viral Morakhia put his utmost effort to
motivate members on the call of "Each one bring one”. His motivation and club members efforts
resulted in enrolling 6 new quality members, a 30% net membership growth”.
RC Vadodara One is happy to share that they welcomed 7 new members in the first month of the
Rotary year. President Kalpa Rachh say “ At the start of the year, we had 25 members and we
added 7 more, taking the tally to 32 members. Four of the seven new members are women.
With their varied experience the new members bring new ideas and energy to the club, and they
lend a helping hand in our service projects too. This is the beginning, and we hope to bring in
more good members to our club”.
RC Bharuch Femina inducted seven new members and have grown from 31 to 38. President
Shailaja Singh says “ I am very satisfied to add quality members who will help to make club
stronger. Two new members are heading esteemed schools as Principals, three are educators,
one a yoga expert and one a home maker”.
The start of Membership Development is very promising and it will pave the way for further
growth through the year. “Each one bring one” is a call to be heeded and fulfilled for the bright
future of Rotary.
Sponsor a new member and you'll not only strengthen your club,
you'll also get recognised for your efforts. Through the New Member
Sponsor Recognition Program, sponsors will now receive a specially
designed Rotary pin and recognition on Rotary's website.
Simply enter new members into your club's records and identify the
sponsor. Each week, Rotary will send clubs a packet containing the
names of newly identified sponsors along with Rotary pins and as
many as four different coloured pin backers. The colour of the
backer depends on the number of new members sponsored,
ranging from blue for one member to gold for six or more. Gold-level sponsors will be listed in the
Membership Recognition Gallery, and if they attend the convention, invited to join the RI
president for a special recognition event.
All new members and their sponsors must be designated in club records in My Rotary to
participate in the program. Sponsors of members who joined Rotary on or after 1 July 2013 are
eligible.
To recognise those who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and success in growing
membership, Rotary International has launched - The Membership Society for New Member
Sponsors, a virtual gallery for those members who have sponsored 25 or more new members.
Members can achieve different tiers of recognition as they continue to sponsor more members.
Bronze Level: Sponsored 25-29 members
Silver Level: Sponsored 30-49 members
Gold Level: Sponsored 50-74 members
Platinum Level: Sponsored 75+ members
To be included in the Membership Society, individual has to sponsor 25 or more members, and
report it to Rotary. New member sponsorship can only be for active members in the same club,
and does not include charter members of a new club.
The New Member Orientation and Membership
The first club to be chartered in the year, Rotary Club of Vapi Phoenix is the brain child of six
past Rotarians – Rajan, Hemant, Himanshu, Dewang, Vishal and Sudha, whose faith in Rotary
had not diminish even after they had left the organisation. Rotary had an everlasting impact on
their lives giving them good friends in the district and beyond, along with the opportunities to
serve. The motto of Rotary - Service above Self was imbedded in their beings and it had
become a way of life.
They decided to come together with old Rotarian friends to start a new Club, meeting PDG
Anish Shah, who welcomed the idea and gave them proper guidance. Initially they decided to
start with a small number of members, but slowly other friends also showed interest in joining
Rotary. Since most were not from Rotary, an Orientation meeting was held during which the
structure and programs undertaken by Rotary were discussed. Around 70 people attended the
meeting, out of which 60 members immediately joined in.
On 1 st July the club registration form along with charter members list was handed over to DG
Santosh, who approved, appointing Rtn. Vipul Patel as GSR. The flight of Phoenix began
formally on 14th July 2021 when it was chartered. The Charter Installation Ceremony was held
on 15th August at Avadh Utopia where installing officer DG Santosh Pradhan installed President
Himanshu Garg, 60 charter members, 10 new members and the club charter was presented.
PDG’s Nilax Mufti and Anish Shah were the guest of honour. Club Bulletin “Udaan” was unveiled
by the worthy hands of PDG Nilax Mufti and Rtn Shailja Mufti. The formation the Interact Club of
Vapi Phoenix, was also announced.
For the members the name Phoenix represents a new force arising from the very ashes, and
they promise to rise and shine. Charter President Himanshu says “In my view, the purpose of the
life of every human being should be to make a positive contribution to the continuance and
wellbeing of humanity. Here is where we as Rotarians differ and that’s why we are here….. to
make a difference and Serve to Change Lives! I believe in the quote “ We make a living by what
we get, but we make a life by what we get””.
The second decade of the 21st Century has
emerged as a great teacher consequent to outbreak
of Covid-19 pandemic. The nation has faced a
terrible and unprecedented situation in the last one
and half years. The Rotary Club of Ankleshwar, a
leading club of RID 3060, was in close contact with
all the Rotarians during the lock down period taking
care of their wellbeing. With the launch of the COVID
vaccine the Club decided to help out the government
and initiated the vaccination project.
PDG Ashok Panjwani says “I feel immense pleasure
in informing you that after the arrival of the vaccine
and looking at the importance of being vaccinated
the Club came up with massive vaccination drive in our area. The Rotary Club of Ankleshwar
provided an impressive 71,412 doses of vaccines, as of mid August, to the citizens of Bharuch
and Ankleshwar. RC Ankleshwar is indebted to government authorities, BEIL Infrastructure
Limited, Jhagadia Industries Association and Ankleshwar Industrial Development Society, who
played an important role in successfully executing the vaccination drive. The process of
vaccination is on going and the target is to cover the entire district”.
The highly relevant project has been tremendously successful and satisfactory. In addition, the
Club is distributing face masks which are being made and provided by the Rotary Women
Empowerment Centre. Club members and BIEL took up the difficult task of convincing the
RC Ankleshwar has once again risen to the occasion and is doing all it can in the fight against
the COVID pandemic.
After getting nominated as Club President Rtn. Paresh
Kalavadia started planning various activities at the
macro level. At the time of his installation ceremony,
he came up with ideas focusing on the ‘upliftment of
the society’. One of his dreams was
project “PRAGYANNAM”.
Why and what is this project, let’s understand in his
own words, “Due to the devastating effects of the
COVID-19 Pandemic for the last 18 months, students
suffered the most. Approximately 29,000 students
studying in Rajkot Municipal Schools in standards 1 to
8 were left without any formal education. These
students having no mobile phones or no internet connection were left in the lurch. Reports are
such that many of these young minds had to leave education and had to join labour force.
Financial viability became a grave issue for their families and thus not able to sustain any sort of
educational expenses. Many cases surfaced wherein parents died due to COVID-19 and kids
had nowhere to go”.
“The void of education for such a long period of time puts forth a new challenge on our
educational system - how to bring such students back to school physically”? questioned Rtn.
Paresh.
“Hence, we at Rajkot Greater initiated and
implemented multi-pronged activities to re-connect
with the students. Club Secretary Dr. Hitesh
Sapovadia supported us wholeheartedly and as the
project grew it required additional chairs and cochairs.
VP Ishita Chhotai became the Project Chair
and she was given a free hand to manage and frame
a core team and also involve Rotary families. As a
result, 75 Rotary Club family members, RCC
Members, Interactors, and others joined TEAM
PRAGYANNAM”.
“They were then divided into small groups of 2 to 4
and were tasked to visit 88 Municipal Primary
Schools. During their visit, they noted their observations in a neatly designed form. This
information was filled up in a Google Form, along with photographs of the school, class Rooms,
washrooms, play ground etc. Considering the remote location of these schools, their Google
Locations were monitored and registered for future use. The technical expertise of Rtn. Priyank
Bharad helped with digital adoption of this project.
A lot of data was procured, assessed and priorities were identified. The priority was tree
plantation across all 88 Schools. This set the benchmark and then umpteen activities were rolled
out one after another, on the school premises and across the streets where the students reside.
“While the teams were working on re-connecting with the students and schools, we had an idea
to connect the schools and make a grand Rangoli on 15th August 2021, our Independence Day.
We unanimously decided on the theme: Rangoli on the theme of National Flag. This process
lead to the idea of attempting the World Record, with the help of RCC President Minu
Jasdanwala” says Pres. Paresh.
The End Result: The Award of World Record
To encourage students towards patriotism RC Rajkot Greater organised a world record event,
with kind support of Shikshan Samiti Chairman Mr. Atul Pandit, where more than 1,300 students
(under the age of 16) participated and made more than 650 tri-coloured national flag rangoli, with
minimum dimension of 2 feet x 2 feet – using various natural materials. A new record was thus
set on 15th August, 2021, by RC Rajkot Greater.
I joined Rotary Club of Ankleshwar in the year 2012-13,
motivated by my spouse PP Jinendra Kothari. RC
Ankleshwar, an outstanding and committed club of RID 3060
has many distinguished members and it was a matter of
pride for me to be associated with it. After serving various
posts at club level, I became the Club President in the
Rotary year 2019-20. This year I have been given the
splendid opportunity to serve Rotary at District 3060 level,
for which I thank DG Santosh Pradhan. I can now explore
Rotary beyond my Club level and expand my understanding
and experiences.
I have been assigned three clubs, RC Bharuch Narmada Nagri, Rotary e club of
Ankleshwar Green and Rotary Bharuch Femina. I have met all three presidents and
the teams at their club assembly, talked about projects, membership and foundation. I
have shared with them the dream and vision of RI President Shekhar Mehta and DG
Santosh Pradhan. The Clubs have started inducting new members and doing good
projects. All President's are very enthusiastic and co- operative. It's really a matter of
great joy and satisfaction for me as I am helping them out and alongside making
friends beyond my club level.
Rotary Club of Ankleshwar is one of the leading club of RID 3060. Our club have many
permanent projects such as the Shroff Rotary Institute of Chemical Technology, Rotary
Shantidham ISO 14000 crematorium, Green gymnasium, UPL Rotary library, women
empowerment center, eye bank and blood bank. This year we are adding more
permanent projects like human milk bank and an e waste management project. I will
try my best and give maximum as Assistant Governor to serve the society, my
assigned Clubs and Rotary.
Anita Kothari
Assistant Governor
The Rotary Foundation is the life line of the Rotary
organisation. It provides resources to carry out
large and small projects and these service projects
change lives both close to home and around the
world. Rotarians generously contribute to this
central bank every year under a variety of schemes
and causes. Since it was founded more than 100
years ago the TRF has spent more than $4 billion
on life changing sustainable projects.
This year our District Governor Santosh Pradhan
has come up with many incentives to encourage
members to donate. If any club becomes an EREY Club by giving $25 per member the club will
get an attractive school bag per member. If opened out sixth standard students can even sit on
it.
The members who give $100 to TRF will get a special pin as recognition.
The members who give $1000 will be gifted a Face Shield which is very useful in the current
pandemic scenario. All these givings are to be made in the Annual Fund.
DG Santosh Pradhan has thrown himself a challenge and will be donating the equivalent amount
as donated by all the Presidents of the district combined. He will also be donating the same
amount as donated by all the President Elects, in Rotary year 2022-23.
Foundation Seminar - For the Rotaractors - By
the Rotaractors was conducted on 15th August
2021 to make Rotaractors aware about the, The
Rotary Foundation and explain to them how
Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation
are different from each other. The main aim of
this seminar was to ignite awareness and
knowledge amongst Rotaractors regarding TRF.
This was the first of its kind Foundation Seminar
ever conducted BY THE Rotaractors - For The
Rotaractors in any District in the world. The event had 2 Guest Speakers, PDRR Jay Balasara,
RID 3054 (1st Rotaractor to become Major Donor Level II) & Rtr Rishabh Sheth, RID 3060 (1st
Rotaractor to become Major Donor Level I).
This seminar was conducted by Rotaract District Director for Foundation Committee viz. Rtr.
Dhara Dhanesha.
An interview named “Balache Pahile 1000 Amulya
Divas” a baby’s first 1000 invaluable days, was
organised by RC of Nandurbar. It was a hybrid
interview with many members participating
physically and more than 675 participants virtually
present in the zoom meeting room.
The interview was organised on account of World
Breast Feeding Week observed between 1st to 7th
August every year. The speaker Dr. Jayant Shah, is
a paediatrician by profession and an expert
breastfeeding consultant. Dr Jayant Shah has been
advocating the importance of breastfeeding for a
long time. Having presided over the
breastfeeding promotion network of India,
he also serves as national vice president of
IYCF.
Apart from the sharing of knowledge by the
speaker, the commitment and efforts of the
participants made this interview a unique
one. Most were Asha workers and
Anganwadi Sevikas of the health
department who work in the remote corners of Nandurbar district. A picture of the lady sitting on
a rock in the Satpura mountain ranges talks for itself. Such was the gravity of the subject and
desperation to learn that technical hurdles couldn't stop these grass root level health workers
from attending.
Right from misunderstandings about breastfeeding to ill practices Dr. Shah answered several
questions. He insisted on creating mother support groups at local level to spread awareness
among feeding mothers and removing misbeliefs. It is only human beings who consume the milk
of other animals as an alternative to mother's milk, said Dr. Shah. He also explained the
importance of role played by family members and the support they can give in nurturing the
baby during it's first 1000 days, thus making the baby wiser and healthier for a lifetime.
As the newly inducted President of RC Amreli Gir, I feel
enthusiastic and focused and committed to make my club and
Rotary stronger and vibrant. Together, let us make it the best year
of our lives, by making it a year to grow more and do more. Let
this be a year of change-makers, and let us begin with our
membership. Our Club has completed three years, according to
which we may have entered higher kindergarten but it feels like
appearing for college exams in this difficult time. However, our
efforts have been very good and as a result the district took note
of it and five district level posts were given to the club which is a
matter of good fortune for a new club.
This changemaker year I would like to share my dream and ideas
with you. Since this year we have made a humble effort to run our
club in accordance with the rules and protocol of Rotary and our
Assistant Governor Mr. Jigneshbhai also appreciated and
encouraged us in this regard. This year the focus of Rotary is membership development. RIP
Shekharda has given us a slogan “each one, bring one” and I am proud to say that we have
introduced 4 new member in the very first month of the year, a ten percent growth.
This year we plan to start a multi facility hospital. We started our service project with a blood
pressure and diabetic camp. We also developed our permanent project Rotary Clinic and
medical store. Even in this day and age, girls and young women face disproportionate
challenges all over the world. We have the power to lead the charge for gender equality.
Empowering young women to have greater access to education, health care, employment, and
equality in all walks of life should be encouraged and in our Rotary Clinic both doctors are young
ladies.
We aim to increase our permanent project, do Global Grant projects, and serve for betterment of
our society, making a difference in the circle of life. With the slogan of “Vasudev Kutumbakam”,
RC Amreli Gir is a close knit a family and follows the Rotary mantra of friendship and fellowship.
These are challenging times, and I compliment each of your efforts in grappling with COVID-19.
No challenge is too big for Rotarians. Rotarians friends have helped Covid patients procure
oxygen and medicines. Let’s together turn the Rotary wheel so all humanity thrives; we have the
power and the magic to “Serve to Change Lives”
Devdatt Jani
President, RC Amreli- Gir
Keeping RIP Shekhar Mehta's request for a
ROTARY DAY OF SERVICE in mind, nine
these clubs together organised a bike rally
starting from Surat up to White Feather
Resort, Dudhani. This event saw
Clubs distributed 150 ration kits worth Rs. 800 each at Kaucha village and other suburbs
near Surat area. The event was a combination of Service project, fellowship and Public
Image through a bike rally by 100 plus Rotarians all coming together. Participants and
DAY OF SERVICE and enjoyed fellowship at White Feather Resort, Kaucha, Dudhani.
It happened for the first time in the history of Rotary
International, that collaring of any president is done in a
charter flight at 5000ft of height.
Yes, you heard it Right. Rotaract D3060 hosted Installation
Ceremony of SEARIC MDIO which is a multi district
information center of 7 South East Asian countries having
approximate 50% Rotaract members of total membership and
the incoming President PDRR Kaushal Sahu was collared in
flight by worthy Installation Officer DRFC PDG PDRR Ashish
Ajmera of D3060.
PDRR Kaushal Sahu was blind folded and taken to Surat airport where a charter flight was
waiting for them to be a part of history in making. He was shocked and surprised after
hearing about the Mid Air Collaring which never ever ever happened in the world.
Excited and overjoyed Sahu mentioned "If this can anywhere in the world, it has to be in
District 3060."
Wait, this is just not the end... An Installation
Ceremony of SEARIC MDIO was followed in a
resort in the peaceful outskirts of Surat in a
swimming pool. Again a never before event
when an MDIO team gets installed inside the
pool with colourful customised dress code which
suits to the occasion. Following all covid
guidelines where delegates were allowed to
event after RT-PCR report, the organizing
committee made sure that all guidelines of local
authority are being followed by participants.
But what’s a trip to Surat without Surti
Breakfast? The host team had arranged a
special Surti Breakfast for the delegates for the
next day right before checking out at The
Weekend Address, where everyone relished the
delicacies of Surat before leaving with a lifetime
of memories with them.
Installation Officer PDG Ashish Ajmera advised
"Have fun but with responsibility" during his
speech.
Guest of Honour DGN Nihir Dave (3060)
reiterated PDRR Sahu's words "that if this can
happen ever in world, it has to happen in District
3060"
Guest of Honour PDG Harish Gaur (from D3053)
couldn't stop himself in saying he regretted that
he could not be part of Rotaract in his life after
seeing Installation in Air and Swimming Pool.
Delegates danced with heart out to music
followed by delicious dinner before they called it
a day.
Initially the event, which was designed with an expected audience below 50 considering the
pandemic situation, was overwhelmed by the delegates. PDRR Nirav Trivedi who managed the
egistration shared his experience "It is normal
for our team to have a housefull event. This time
it was different as the response was so
overwhelming, we had to change venues just a
few days before the event, also accomodation
and transport arrangements needed upgrade.
And it was required to be managed with the
same number of volunteers as before. It was a
challenging task as 3 of other committee
members along with dignitaries and few
volunteers were required to go to Airport for the
surprise Charter Flight with no communication at
all"
Chairman PDRR Viral gives complete credit of
successful event to the team consists few DRR
Cadres & Committee Members, Past DRCC and
few volunteers who just joined Rotaract a month
back
Chairman Viral in his magical hurdle speech,
requested all volunteers to be calm and provide
the best hospitality to the guest delegates with a
smiling face. He rightly says"Delegates are our
guests. Assume they have come to a wedding in
our house, especially on our invitation. Make
sure they get everything they require. Even if
something is out of your control, just smile and
try to make it possible for them. Let us all go out
and do our best to provide the best experience
to the delegates.
And the feedback of delegates and dignitaries
proves that it was a once in a lifetime experience
for them.
Rotaract South Asia MDIO representative and
past president PDRR Yatin who came especially to congratulate the SEARIC team shares his
joy "District 3060 always surprises the delegates. After RZI in 2018 where I got elected as MDIO
President, we thought a new benchmark of hosting a multi district event was created, but we
were wrong. It's an Hallmark of D3060 that they
raise the bar every time when they host an
event. I especially liked the idea of 'Food
Hamper' which included local food and beverage
sponsored by various clubs of the district. It
shows the collective efforts and support by all
clubs to the district when it matters the most."
Rotary Public Image Coordinator 2022-25, PDG
Pinky Patel shared that she really enjoyed this
event with Rotaractors.
Our own District Governor Santosh Pradhan
says, “it was a great experience, 3060 Rocks,
like always”. And for the amazing Shirts &
Branding he further says “#BrandRotaract3060
is amazing.”
Event Secretary PDRR Khushal says "The event
was truly hosted by District as volunteers from
more then 10 clubs joined to support and many
more were in waiting for a chance to work for the
event and wanted to be a part of this. We will be
looking forward to hosting such multi district
events in future as well.”
Host DRR Vatsal who was a torch bearer in
bringing this event to 3060 shares anecdote "I
was keen to bring a multi district event to 3060
after we hosted Rotaract Zonal Institute 3 years
back in Vapi, all PDRRs jumped in to support
immediately which reflects the Unity of PDRRs in
the land of Statue of Unity - World's Tallest
Statue. Many of them got actively involved in
managing the whole show, where others
supported from the back wherever needed"
DRR Vatsal also thanked a long list of sponsors and past and future leaders of Rotary 3060 who
were present to witness a truly Historic evening of Rotary World as the event came to an end.
“
If Communities had to pay for the services
Rotary volunteers provide, it would cost
them around $850 millions a year.
On the Gujarat-Maharashtra
border there is an industrial
town known as Umbergaon. It
is known for large numbers of
industries, around 1700 and increasing
everyday. But
Umergaon is more famous for
its beautiful beach which attracts
many tourists as well as
the film industry. It has been a
shooting location for famous
serials like Ramayan, Mahabharath,
Shree Krishna and
many more.
However it is very sad that local people and tourists do not understand the value and importance
of cleanliness. A beautiful stretch of beach was full of rubbish and plastic thrown
around carelessly. So
this 48 year old Rotary
Club of Umbergaon
along with the Innerwheel
Club of Umergaon
and Rotaract Club decided
to carry forward the
"Swachh Bharat Mission"
initiated by our PM Narendra
Modi. They decided
to celebrate this
year's Independence
Day by pursuing the
message of cleanliness
given by the father of nation,
Gandhiji.
Members of Rotary family along with 10 Umbergaon Nagarpalika Corporators, 10
sweepers and one JCB joined hand to undertake the massive task of cleaning up the
dirty beach, under the leadership of President Mehul Sheth and Secretary Milind Sonpal.
Rtn Amol Bokadia the project chair of the Rotary Beach Cleaning Drive planned all the
details and gave the city a sparkling new beach front. The team is now working to make
this project a permanent project and the cleanliness drive will be executed every monthly
or fortnightly.
The entire session was
taken up on Zoom
platform and by using
live interaction on both
the websites. A
separate training
session was conducted
for the Assistant
sessions were taken up
by PP Chirag Trivedi,
RI District 3060 organized a two day training session for
Presidents, Secretaries and Assistant Governors on the digital
portal My Rotary and Rotary India on 23 rd and 24 th of July. These
two sites are the most important tools available to office bearers
for all Rotary work. From setting up of My Rotary account to
updating all the club activities, all possible aspects were covered
in this session. All major sessions were followed by a Question
“Dare to Lead” - RYLA by Surat Tapi
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by
Rotary clubs and districts where you develop your skills as a leader while having fun and making
connections.
What are the benefits?
Connect with leaders in your community and around the world to:
- Build communication and problem-solving skills
- Discover strategies for becoming a dynamic leader in your school or community
- Learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors
- Unlock your potential to turn motivation into action
- Have fun and form lasting friendships
“Conqueror yourself and the whole universe is yours” so said Swami Vivekanand. With this
saying in mind RC Surat Tapi organised a RYLA event - “Dare to Lead”.
“Dare to Lead” was conceptualised with a perfect balance of Nature, Technology, Empathy and
Happiness. RYLA was held on 27-29 August, on both Digital and Physical platform -
PHYGITAL, and it was a perfect blend of online and offline work.
More than 70 students attend the digital event and 50 students joined for the physical RYLA at
Bardoli. The full day session was loaded with knowledge activities like Biogas plant operations,
Sterilisation of Gaumutra, Animal Husbandry, Farming, Planning of Finances, Leadership
Activities, Art activities, Games, Business modelling and off course fun and fellowship.
The company of these young participants enhanced the joy of Rotarians too. Club is thankful to
Ram Singh and Rama Singh of Suruchi Shikshan Vasahat Trust, Bardoli for their space and
giving a brief but in-depth knowledge to connect with nature and RYLA District Chairman Nitin
Garg for encouragement. IDR Vaidehi also participated in this RYLA.
DG Santosh Pradhan, AG Rashika Bharadwaj, DRR Vatsal Khimasiya, DRRE Shivani Shah
graced the occasion and made it a successful event.
Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta
is urging members to become more involved in
service projects. Caring for and serving others
is the best way to live because it changes other
people's lives and our own.
Presidential initiatives:
Each One, Bring One: Each time you attend a
Rotary event or meeting, bring a family
member or someone interested in Rotary. This
initiative is aimed at increasing awareness of
Rotary and growing membership.
Empowering Girls: Girls and women have the
right to be safe, educated, and healthy. Learn
how you can support and empower girls with a toolkit that was launched 1 July.
Presidential conferences: You can attend a presidential conference. The 2021-22
presidential conference series will highlight the humanitarian work that clubs and
districts pioneer locally
and support globally.
Rotary Days of Service:
Every club can plan one
of these service events,
which needs to be
organized by two or
more Rotary or Rotaract
clubs to provide
meaningful, hands-on
volunteer opportunities
that attract participants
from outside Rotary.
A photo is worth a thousand words!
Rotaract Club of Ignited Mind's had a
virtual photography event on Sunday.
As a social and an ice breaker event,
the Rotracters had to come up with a
photo of theirs which holds a special
place in their life. As simple as it
sounds, it was a special event. There
was a burst of memories as the photos
came up, and when the rotaracters
opened up the significance that the
photo had in their life.
A unique memory that was shared by a
handful of Rotaracters was the school
life. The school buildings and
classrooms had a special place in the
hearts even after so many years or
passing it. It made people so nostalgic
about school life and childhood that
Rotaractors opened up about their school life too even though they shared photos of other
memory of theirs.
Rtr. Dhrumil recalled showing his school photo that how the guy he got into scuffle on the first
day became his best friend, whereas Rtr Ashlesha recalled her last of school on how her last
days of school were spend under covid guidelines. A rotaracter said ‘As everyone is sharing
their school photos, let me share a bit of mine’. I think it’s things like this, where people open up
and share a part of their life with us makes events successful.
It was an event where we got a deep insight into what really makes memories worth visiting, and
the answer is People. The time that we spend with people is what makes our memories worth
sharing, our stories worth telling and life worth living. It was a pleasing experience where
everyone's memories touched our hearts and somewhere, we too could relate to it. School life, a
place that one visited, family photo maybe of a situation that one handled well. Every photo had
a story, message and memory, that we took with us from the event.
