A word from the Principal...
Dear families,
Christmas is in the air and the annual build up to the end of term is evident! As I write, our FLS
team are tirelessly working to set up the Christmas Fair, moving boxes, arranging stalls and putting
the finishing touches to what I am sure will be a fantastic event.
As we enter the final two weeks of term, we also look forward to our KS1 and KS2 Christingles as
well as the EYFS nativity. These are all great opportunities for us to get together, provide a real audience
for our children and enjoy the festive season.
Not only are Christmas events in full swing, but our celebrations of learning are also beginning in
earnest. Y6 blew us away with their World War presentation, sharing the huge array of newly accumulated
knowledge through the medium of song, poetry and acting. It was incredibly powerful and
brilliantly put together, well done to all the children and staff in Y6. Moving on to this week, it was
brilliant to see so many family members engaging with our Y3 event. It is fantastic for our children
to have the opportunity to share their learning and there was such a very high standard clay modelling
and sewing on show!
The next two weeks will whizz past us in a flash, so please keep an eye out for important dates etc
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

Football Success
Well done to our boys team who braved the cold to
take on St Uny in the cup on Wednesday.
In a tense affair, Teddy scored to make it 1-1 at half
time before Alex scored the winner with the best
headed goal Mr Goodchild has ever seen at school level!
Well done boys and on to the next round
Also, a huge well done to a boys football team, who
were 3-1 winners vs St Uny on Tuesday. All 8 children
were fantastic for the entire game, both with their
performance and their sportsmanship. The professionals
could learn a thing or two from Ludgvan’s players.
Scorers: Finley C x2 and Tommy.
Player of the match: Adam Rothwell (Defensive extraordinaire).
Hockey
Last Friday evening, Ludgvan Hockey Club members
took part in a primary hockey tournament at the
Astro Park. Several members made their competition
debut, and the whole team did incredibly well against
some very tough & experienced opponents. Everyone
showed fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship, and
represnted the school very well. Looking forward to
the next hockey match!

Outdoor Learning...
Outdoor Learning has seen a flurry of activity over the past two weeks. Our
pigs have been getting to know our pupils and staff with lots of visits and
hands on interaction taking place. They’re growing away at some speed!
Many of our sessions have seen Ludgvan turn into our very own Santa’s Workshop
with the children building their Christmas crafts for the Christmas Fayre.
We’ve been really impressed to see everyone’s concentration and resilience
using the different tools. Teamwork has been very prominent for many of the
crafts with the children supporting each other to complete their task.

Outdoor Learning...
Last week our year 5 pupils undertook their first navigation expedition of the
year. Prior to this, they have been focusing on map skills during their Outdoor
Learning through orienteering. They worked in groups to plan their route ready
for their walk. Their task was to navigate from Carbis Bay to Trencrom Hill following
public footpaths, both along roads and across country. Despite Miss
Rome and Miss Steiner’s groups getting lost within the first 100 yards… everyone
managed to get on track and make their way to Trencrom successfully.
They may have faced a few heavy showers on route but there were still plenty
of smiles at the end. Two of the groups ended up merging together and arrived
at Trencrom at the same time which resulted in there being 3 spaces short on
the minibus. A big well done to Hannah and Bibi, who rather than waiting for
the bus to return, joined Mr Richards in walking most of the way back to school
which was a route even longer than they had previously walked. Not once did
their smiles disappear on route!

EYFS
We have been very busy this week learning about Polar regions. Our book of
the week is ‘Lost and Found’ which is about a penguin and a boy who become
friends. Mysteriously, Fred the Frog saw a penguin break into our classroom
at the weekend. We then found a letter which said ‘help’ and we wrote back to
the penguin. Outside, lots of the children enjoyed ice painting. They explored
mixing colours and there was lots of discussion about how ice is made and
what happens to it. The children have also enjoyed learning about animals that
live in the polar regions. We learnt about how some animals camouflage in the
snow to avoid predators and also talked about how the animals stay warm.

Y1
Year 1 have been exploring the artist Jackson Pollock and his abstract art. The
children recreated their own pictures in his style by pouring and flicking the
paint onto paper. It was great fun!! They have also been experimenting with
mixing Autumn colours.
In science the children were set a challenge to find an appropriate material that
would make an umbrella to keep our class bear dry. Even though some of the
materials were waterproof we decided that they were just not suitable for an
umbrella.
Last week we were very lucky to have two different visitors, Canon Nigel who
came to talk about Christenings and weddings. The other visitors were Mr and
Mrs Smith and their puppets. They helped to teach the children about the virtues
of kindness, respect, and courage. They then taught the children a song
called ‘One People One World’.

Y2
What an exciting couple of weeks we have had in Year 2! Last week, we went
on a trip to Penzance Fire Station. This trip supported our understanding of
how fire stations work and how they are different to those during The Great
Fire of London. The class got to explore a fire engine, look around the entire
station (even in the gym) and they all had a go at using the fire hose. As a
part of our topic, we have also been designing and building Tudor houses (just
like the houses that were around in 1666). The children created very detailed
designs and we have been so impressed by the amazing houses they have
built. Many of the children added moving parts to their houses, such as doors
and windows, and added a lot of intricate details, just like the original houses.
Finally, we have been getting creative in art and the children have loved our
learning all about clay. They started by making pinch pots and have moved
onto designing and creating clay tiles. It has been fantastic to see how well
they have all picked up the skills we have learnt. Well done Year 2!

Y3
Year 3 have ended their Cornwall topic by having a shared learning morning
with their grown ups. It was an excellent morning of creativity, with everyone
really getting involved. The children and adults made Cornish flags, St Michael’s
Mount from lego, Tin mines using clay, followed a recipe to make scones
and made a cushion with a Cornish theme! Well done everyone, the outcomes
were amazing!
Thank you to all the adults that came to support the children, they had fun and
loved you being a part of their learning.

Y4
It’s been another great week for Class 4; they’ve been so busy with their learning.
They’ve independently created more superb 3D clay pieces, which they
designed based around our topic ‘What lies beneath?’ There were a variety of
creations including sea creatures, boats, islands and waves to name a few. In
English, the children have been analysing and highlighting key features of instructional
texts. They have now started to write their own, coming up with
some very capturing titles and introductions. Looking after our teeth has been
the key learning focus of Science over the last few weeks. They have learnt the
names of the different teeth and understood the purpose of those teeth. Following
this, they viewed images of many different people’s teeth, observing the
effect of not caring or caring for your teeth over time. They were very shocked
by the results of what could happen if they do not care for their teeth. The children
then took time to understand how to best look after their teeth and they
shared this with the school by making posters to put up.

Y5
Over the last two weeks, Class 5 have been busy writing suspense stories. We
have been so impressed with their creativy and abilty to create tension and
suspense within their narratives.
We have also had lots of fun in a DT day to ‘Beat the Flood’. The children’s task
was to use a range of materials to build a strong structure that could withstand
the rain and wind during a flooding. They tested their structures for water-resistancy,
absorbancy and strength; and then spent the afternoon building before
the big flood test.
In History, Class 5 have been learning about Shackleton’s expedition. They are
now planning a self-directed project, to dispay their learning about Shackleton
in a creative medium of their choosing.
We also enjoyed watching the first England World Cup match in class- it was
great to see so many passionate football fans enjoy the afternoon!
Well done, Class 5.

Y6
Year 6 have been very busy during the past 2 weeks: starting our newspaper
reports, having virtual meetings with a WW2 specialist, building our own Anderson
shelters out of paper, and testing our Anderson Shelters effectiveness
for sheltering a fragile object.
Our newspaper reports are based around our WW2 topic and we are creating
some fantastic paragraphs using language specific to reporting news stories.
We had a virtual meeting with Mr Mackenzie, who is a German tutor and gave
fascinating insights into WW2 from the perspective of German civilians and
talked, in detail, about the Blitz.
Following on from Mr Mackenzie and his stories, year 6 created their own Anderson
Shelters, but with a twist. The children were only allowed to use paper
in order to construct a shelter that could be durable and rigid enough to
withstand dropping a bomb (hockey ball) onto it. However, the structure had
to protect an egg that was placed inside in order to test how effective the children’s
shelter was. We discussed what the variables of our test would be and
had lots of fun during the testing process.
