prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking

Our house was going to be the dark corner
on the end of the block this year.
That was my fear as every nice fall
day that landed on a weekend was one
where we already had other commitments.
Football games, weddings,
work obligations
— they all deterred
us from getting
the Christmas lights
on our roof.
“Christmas will
come whether we
have our lights on
or not,” I told my
husband, who was
lamenting about the
way our fall had been
going.
I began our interior
decorating a few days before Thanksgiving,
pulling out my husband’s collection
of Dickens Village houses that we have
traditionally put out early, simply because
of how labor intensive it is to get them out,
set them up and connected to electricity.
After Thanksgiving I pulled out the remaining
totes of greenery and decor, spending
the better part of three days decking the
halls and trimming the trees. The joy wasn’t
there this year as I tackled everything, until
day three. Something clicked for me that
day when I tackled the nine-foot tree for our
living room.
The lights went on easily (no strings
burned out!), and the decor looked bright
and fresh. While I was finishing up indoors
my husband assembled a lighted tree and
pop-up snowman for the front yard. He
also found the strings of white lights to attach
to the gutters.
After dusk we took a quick drive around
the neighborhood, switched the radio over
to “Holiday Traditions,” and felt very festive
enjoying the lights.
Now with five inches of snow and blustery
winds, it’s a good thing we got done
when we did.
Just in the “St. Nick” of time.

SANTA CLAUS
The sights and sounds of Christmas
joy will soon fill the air in
downtown Spirit Lake.
Santa’s Village is set for Saturday,
Dec. 10, with the annual event full of
fun activities and shopping opportunities
for the whole family to enjoy.
“It’s so much fun,” said Regina
Reed, director of the Spirit Lake
Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a small
town Hallmark Christmas scene
down there. I think my favorite part
is watching how much fun the kids
have. Our businesses should be applauded
for the wonderful job they
do putting this and several events on
throughout the year. It’s wonderful
to watch.”
Stores will begin opening their
doors at 9:30 a.m. with most activities
getting underway shortly after
and most will continue running until
about 2 p.m.
Reed said there will be a good mix
of old favorites like horse-drawn carriage
rides and several new activities
for families to enjoy.
“Everybody enjoys taking photos
with Santa and Mrs. Clause at Allure
— I think pretty much everybody
stops by for that one. Painting ornaments
at Kurio Kastle is always really
fun and we have a bunch of new
ones this year — businesses joining
in the fun, so we’re going to have a
lot of old favorites and quite a few
new ones, too,” Reed said.
With plenty of fun and games
bringing people downtown, it’s also
a great opportunity to knock a few
items of the holiday gift list while
shopping local.
“It’s a great way to get people into
the stores and see what they have
available. Especially during the holiday,
a time of year when the tourists
are gone and all that it’s super important
economically that we support
our local businesses,” Reed said.
To that end, the chamber has also
organized Shop Local-motive which
includes a number of prizes and
giveaways to reward folks for shopping
close to home.
The promotion began Nov. 20
and runs through Dec. 11 with 40
businesses participating. Shoppers
who bring in groups of four receipts
from participating businesses will get
entered into weekly prize drawings.
It’s just part of a holiday season full
of fun throughout Spirit Lake.
And it all comes together at Santa’s
Village. F

Meander
into the holidays
It’s beginning to look a lot like
Christmas in downtown Spencer.
On Monday, Dec. 5, the town will
be hosting their annual Grand Meander
and TubaChristmas event.
The Grand Meander runs downtown
from 5-7 p.m., and the Tuba
Christmas will start at 6:30 p.m.
at Occasions, the former Spencer
Middle School.
It’s a fun tradition that jump-starts
the holiday season for the town.
“Grand Meander is the kickoff to
the holiday season in downtown
Spencer. Families come downtown
and can basically walk Grand and
see so many windows come to life
with activity,” said Nancy Naeve, the
executive director of Spencer Mainstreet.
“We have it all; dancing, singing,
ornament and craft making, pets
up for adoption and so much more.”
This will be the community’s 36th
Grand Meander.
“It’s truly bustling and festive and
heartwarming. Parents and loved
ones come to watch their children
perform while others bring their
children to see all the activity and
enjoy plenty of treats and hot chocolate,”
Naeve said.
The list of all the activities taking
place during Grand Meander is long
and includes something for everyone.
There will be a soup
and pie supper, letter
writing to Santa, live
mannequins, a music
recital, cookies, ornament
making, gingerbread
house building,
a fashion show, vintage
snowmobiles and
much more.
One very special
event is TubaChristmas.
“TubaChristmas
will be held at Occasions
(the old Middle
School) conducted
by Alan Berdahl from
Sioux Falls and its tuba
players from around
the area performing
Christmas classics. It’s
really fun to listen to
plus the new board at
Occasions will have
treats available for a
good will offering,”
Naeve said.
There will also be
five warming stations
set up on the sidewalks with free hot
chocolate served by the Iowa Lakes
Community College soccer players
to give people a chance to warm up
from the inside out.
Naeve’s favorite moment of the
night and the one she looks forward
to involves the jolly man himself.

The miracle of Christmas
Spencer Community Theatre bring classic to the stage
A
classic Christmas tale is coming
to life on stage in Spencer.
The Spencer Community
Theatre’s next production in their
63rd mainstage season will include
the beloved holiday classic “Miracle
on 34th Street The Play.”
The show is set to run with an
evening show at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2,
3, 9 and 10. There will be a matinee
showing at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4
and 11.
This is the first time that SCT has
presented this show.
“We wanted to switch up our
format and were looking for a
heartwarming classic that was not
presented in a musical. This production
offers all that and more,” said
Liz McNea, the executive director of
Spencer Community Theatre. “It has
a multigenerational appeal. The cast
does include several family groups.
So it’s awesome to see parents, kids,
and siblings participating in the arts
together.”
The story focuses on single mother
Doris Walker, who will be played by
Lindsey Matthisen, who has raised
her daughter, Susan, to have a realistic
outlook on life — which includes
not believing in Santa. When both
characters come in contact with the
Macy’s Santa Claus, who claims to be
the real Kris Kringle, played by Brent
Berends, their hearts and the hearts
of many others undergo a change to
have faith in things they cannot see.
It’s a show that’s perfect for spreading
the Christmas spirit, according to
the show’s director.
“I’m very anxious to see it with
an audience; the warmth in the
show gives me a wonderful Christmassy
feeling and I want to be in
the middle of a room full of that
warmth,” said Dave DeChristopher,
the production’s director and the
SCT’s artistic director.
He hopes that everyone who
comes to the show takes away “an
incandescent holiday glow and an
understanding of the importance of
belief in our lives.”
This show is one that has wide appeal
and would be enjoyed by everyone
in the family.
“This is truly a show for all ages.
Children can understand and enjoy
the ideas, and it’s not written down
to children, so adults can understand
and enjoy it too. It’s honest and not
condescending, with genuine humor
and wisdom,” DeChristopher said.
The Spencer Community Theatre
will have their own miracle on First
Avenue with the production of this

You better watch out
You don’t have to travel to
the North Pole to catch a
glimpse of Santa.
Two times a week, you can
find him right in Estherville.
For decades, Santa has made
a point of coming to Estherville
twice a week so that children
from all over can stop by and
give him their wish list for
Christmas.
“Santa’s House is Santa’s vacation
cabin in Estherville. He visits
on Thursdays and Saturdays
as a way to get away from the
workshop and see some of his favorite
children,” said Lexie Ruter,
executive director of the Estherville
Chamber of Commerce.
It’s a great place for children
to come and meet Santa as well
as give him their letters for what
they’d like for Christmas.
Santa’s House is open on
Thursday evenings from 5-7 p.m.
and Saturday mornings from 10
a.m.-noon up until Christmas.
They will not be open on Christmas
Eve.
The event is free and there
is no preregistration required.
People simply need to show up
to get to meet the big man — all
are welcome, Ruter said.
“Anyone who wants to meet
Santa, take a picture with
him and/or give him their list
[should come],” Ruter said. “We
welcome all children and their
families to visit Santa while he’s
in Estherville! Anyone who loves
Santa is welcome! That even includes
pets!”
Estherville has updated Santa’s
House over the years and this
year they have added a new giant
Christmas tree near Santa’s
House.
“It has really made downtown
Estherville even more spectacular
at Christmas. It really is straight
out of a Hallmark movie,” Ruter
said.
Estherville has been giving
kids of all ages the opportunity
to enjoy a visit with Santa for decades
and that is a pretty special
thing.
“It’s wonderful that we have
the opportunity to meet Santa in
a beautiful and heated setting,”
Ruter said. “I have been Santa’s
helper at the house a few times
and my favorite part is the excitement
on the kid’s faces when
they get to meet Santa!” F

said. “We’re looking forward to the
holiday season here and have added
the walk-through light show on Lake
Street into the lower park so it will
be nice for people who want to come
early and is a nice touch before going
to a concert. It will be a fun evening.”
Tonic Sol-fa is comprised of lead
vocalist Shaun Johnson, tenor and
vocal percussionist, Greg Bannwarth,
baritone and percussionist/vocal
percussionist, Theo Brown, and bass,
Jared Dove
Johnson is certainly looking forward
to the holiday season, which has
become their biggest run of the year.
“I think the fact that the holiday
season has become our largest and
most enduring tour as Tonic Sol-fa
makes me happy, because it speaks
to the hard work and risk of many
years,” Johnson said. “We have often
been told by agents, promoters and
the like that a prolonged holiday
tour of multiple dates was expensive
and most likely not feasible. But our
friends and fans have come out year
after year — turning a few shows
into many — and making this a
yearly tradition for families across
the Midwest. That support has been
life changing. And it makes all our
efforts at Christmastime worthwhile.”
With so many Christmas classics to
choose from, as well as some original
tunes, Tonic Sol-fa hits all the right
holiday notes.
“I love our version of ‘Drummer
Boy,’ which has been with us since we
started, an original called ‘Come to
Save the World’ and ‘O Holy Night,’
which I’ve gotten to perform for the
first time ever with my other holiday
tour, the Shaun Johnson Big Band
Experience,” Johnson said.
Getting to bring holiday hits to
the Roof Garden stage is also always
highlight of the season for Johnson.
“There’s nothing like performing
at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park. I
grew up in Algona, and my summers
were filled with friends and family at
the lakes. I love Nutty Bars, shaved
ice, concerts in the park and all of
the many memories associated with
the area,” Johnson said. “Even now,
living in Sioux Falls, I often bring my
girls to Okoboji to boat, swim and
enjoy what I fell in love with so many
years ago. Can’t wait to return!” F
