NDDC: Group issues 14-day ultimatum to FG to inaugurate substantive board
By Festus Ahon
ASABA—THE Niger Delta Pa
triots, a political pressure
group, has issued 14 days ultimatum
to the Federal Government
to constitute a substantive board
for the Niger Delta Development
Commission, NDDC or face the
wrath of the people of the region.
Handing over the ultimatum
during a press briefing in Asaba,
convener of the group, Victor
Okwereogu flanked by David
Omoru, co-convener and Mr
Obaro Unuafe, Secretary, said:
"Since the Interim Management
Committee, IMC of the NDDC
started and completed it's work,
there have been accusations and
counter-accusations from the
committee itself, from the senate
and from some interested
stakeholders.
"It should be noted that the
Niger Delta is Africa's most important
oil producing region and
one of the most polluted places
on earth. Long years of oil exploration
and exploitation in the region
have led to degradation of
the lands as well as the despoliation
of the aquatic life of it's people.
The area covering about
70,000 sq km of wetland has
2023:Dafinone inaugurates campaign council, says APC
better positioned to take over Delta
By Etop Ekanem
GHELLI—CANDIDATE of
Uthe All Progressives Congress,
APC, in Delta Central Senatorial
District, Ede Dafinone, yesterday,
inaugurated his campaign
organization for the 2023 general
election, saying that the party is better
positioned to take over governance of
the state at the polls.
Speaking at Ughelli, Ughelli North
Local Government Area, while
inaugurating the campaign
organization which has Adelabu
Bodjor as Director General, Dafinone
noted that "Our campaign structure
has engaged over seven thousand
never known true peace.
"There have been several
conflicts that led to successive
governments wanting to offer
some palliatives to the people
of the region. The core Niger
Delta littoral states are Delta,
Rivers and Bayelsa with a combined
population of about 13
million people while the expanded
Niger Delta which now
includes Ondo, Edo, Cross
River, Akwa-Ibom, Imo and Abia
states have combined population
of about 33 million people,
that is a fifth of Nigeria's population,
which is higher than the
people and we have not finished
yet."
He lauded Deputy Senate
President and Delta State
governorship candidate of the party,
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and
O'tega Emerhor for their role in
ensuring unity in the party.
He said: "It has been a long
journey. Many of you in this room
are part of the beginning of APC,
and we all know that in 2015 and
2019 the party was fragmented and
we were unable to unite and form a
formidable opposition at those times.
"But in 2022, we are united, the
party has been positioned to take
over Delta state come 2023. We owe
population of any ethnic group in
Nigeria.
"From Henry Wilink's commission
to Gen. Alex Ogomudia's
commission one thing was clear.
The Niger Delta region deserves
a fairer deal in the nation called
Nigeria.
"Suffice it to note that in the
year 2000, the President Olusegun
Obasanjo administration established
the NDDC as an offshoot
of the Niger Delta Development
Board and the OMPADEC, with
the sole mandate of developing
the oil rich Niger Delta region of
Nigeria.
this to our leaders and I want to single
out one of them, the Deputy President
of the Senate, Distinguished Senator
Ovie Omo-Agege, who has nearly
singlehandedly driven the process to
where we are today.
"We are much stronger today as a
party than we ever were and our
chances of winning the state, from
House of Assembly to Senate to
governorship and even to presidency
in Delta state is brighter than ever."
Charging members of campaign
council to work towards the victory of
all candidates of the party, he noted
that "all politics is local and our mission
here today is directed at localizing our
politics. 2023 election is a real election,
where votes will count and will be won
unit by unit.
