MY FIRST JAPANESE
ANIMATION
The first time I watched Japanese animation was during
summer vacation in 2017, when I was 15 years old. The
title of the movie was 'Your Name'. Watching this movie
changed how I looked at cinema.
During the summer vacation I was in my home in Jeju. It
was my 3rd grade of middle school, and I was spending
time with my sister at home in vain. My parents were both
working, so I spent my vacation with my sister reading
books or watching YouTube. One day my sister
recommended that I watch the movie “Your Name”.
3
At that time, I didn't enjoy watching foreign movies, but
as I had nothing to do and was so bored, I prepared to
eat popcorn, then turned on Netflix right away and
watched it, half doubting that I would find it much fun.
The movie "Your Name" has a storyline in which a boy in
Tokyo, "Taki," and a girl in the country, "Mitsuha," have a
strange dream in which their bodies are reversed, and
then they gradually fall in love. Before the movie started,
I prepared to eat popcorn.
The first scene of the movie is converted from the scene
of a comet falling to earth, to a scene of Taki and
Mitsuha waking up at their home, respectively.
4
At the same time, they dream of living someone else's
life, but when they wake up, they experience an ironic
situation where they cannot remember the contents of
the dream. I didn't expect much about this movie, but I
thought the material was novel and became interesting.
In the middle, there is a scene where Taki realizes that
there is a three-year gap in timeline between himself
and Mitsuha, and that Mitsuha died in a comet crash
three years ago. In this scene, I couldn't believe that the
main character had died and thought it was futile, but I
kept watching it with the thought that this would not be
the end. At the end of the movie, Taki's efforts led him
to meet Mitsuha and he saved her from the explosion.
5
This movie was based on the actual place in Japan, and
it was very realistic. So, I felt like Taki and Mitsuha were
actually alive. Especially, the most impressive thing
about this movie was the OST. It was good to listen to
OST in harmony with the background of the movie and
it was music that made me want to keep listening to it.
Even after the movie was over it lingered in my mind.
After watching this movie, I was able to feel why Japan
is world-famous for animation, and it was an
opportunity to like Japanese movies that I was not
interested in. These days I regularly watch Japanese
animation, and I always think of my sister telling me to
watch “Your Name”.

Shinkai Makoto’s dreamlike movies
Written by Min
Everyone who likes Japan animation movies will know of Shinkai Ma
koto. His movies include Your Name and Weathering with you, and
many more. Shinkai Makoto’s movies have touched many animation
lovers, and this article will look at what makes his movies so great
7
In the first place, Makoto’s movies show
8
viewers characters who use super powers
or super events to overcome life difficulties.
Like, agape-like love and family
conversations describe the two films
written above. Makoto uses this method to
show what we miss for touching our mind.
For example, the main characters in his
movies have a trouble or conflict their
family or their life. This makes them
discouraged and lose all hope. But, agapelike
(god or characters efforts) help the
characters to achieve their goal. For
instance, “Your name” shows that Mitsuha
has some trouble with her father. These
bad memories of her time with her father
make her depressed. In the same film Taki
saves Mitsuha by crossing through time (a
time lapse). On the other hand,
“Weathering with you” builds on a
forgotten theme in our lives with character
Hodaka, a runaway boy. In the film, a girl
named Hina has the ability to change the
weather. But using this ability slowly makes
her disappear. Hodaka goes to save her,
using his superpowers. In the two films,
there is a sudden meeting between the two
main characters (a teenage boy and girl)
which is thought to make it more beautiful,
and this part is also noteworthy because
there is a scene that suggests that the
worldview of the two films is the same.
As examples of best of romantic
animations, Shinkai Makoto’s
movies have images of beautiful
places that were inspired by
pictures of real place. In this way
Makoto’s movies have a look that
obscures the distinction between
reality and film. It makes his movies
more romantic and touching, as
you cannot easily find which image
is real or which is the movie’s shot.
The films of Makoto all have
colorful Original Sound Tracks.
“Your Name” held a film concert
with orchestra team (proving how
good the movie’s OST is). Sparkle,
夢 の 灯 , 前 前 前 世 , 何 でもないや is
the representative track of the
movie “Your name”. Sparkle and
the song 前 前 前 世 make the movie
more active by making it
passionate, energetic, and exciting.
On the contrary, the tracks 夢 の 灯
and 何 でもないや help with the
subtlety of the movie, and ensure
the viewers are not too tired to
focus on the story. Other example
can see the movie “Weathering
with you”. 大 丈 夫 , 愛 にできることは
まだあるかい, Voices of Wind,
Grand Escape show us Hodaka and
Hina’s way to live. Like in the
examples from Your Name, the
“Weathering with you” OST helps
the viewers feel indirect
experiences.

SPECIALS
There are many more good things in Shinkai Makoto’s
movies. His movie’s main characters are very beautiful and
similar to reality in their look. Also, the story lines are
fantasy-like, and it melts reality well. There are various
advantages like this, but I intensively wrote about the parts
that I was most impressed by. Shinkai Makoto’s work left a
big impression and lingering impression on me, and it is a
work that leaves good memories with my friends in school.

So, what kind of movie does Pixar make? Pixar's first feature is
that it makes 3D animated films. 3D means three dimensions,
and it also means that all tasks such as 3D computer graphics,
3D modeling, 3D printing, 3D film and 3D display are
completed using a computer program. Background scenes, and
characters, are not painted directly (as in traditional animation
films) but are designed using computer graphics. Pixar
continues to make 3D animated films, which started with Toy
Story 1, the world's first full 3D animated film.
One of the advantages of 3D animation is that you can design
characters at will. Pixar features a variety of characters,
including animals, dolls, fat people, and children, but these
characters all have common features. They are chunky-looking
thing. For example, the character Russell in Up, Sadness in
Inside Out, Joe in Soul, or Mike in Monster, Inc all have a round,
chunky appearance. These characters can be familiar to people
even if they are not exceptionally cute in design.

Pixar movies have many different characters and stories because
they have various themes and backgrounds. But in general, the
ending of these films is touching. Basically, characters face certain
hardships and overcome them in various ways. And even if
characters get what they want or don't get what they hope for, they
understand the situation and grow further. This process and
ending touches the audience even if it is not a sad scene . !
Pixar's animated films can be seen comfortably by many people – it
is difficult to find people who hate or avoids these films. They
fascinate people with their charming way of reflecting on the real
world. Some may think Pixar movies are only for children, but
actually these films give lessons and impressions to many people,
both adults and children. If you are interested in animated films, it
will also be fun to watch Pixar movies.

Comparison
Between
America and Japan
Animation
Since the first animated film
FANTASMAGORIE, many countries have made
many animations, each in their own way and
their own style. For example, Russia, Korea,
Hina, and France all have their own form of
animation. In this article, I will compare the
animation style of
two countries:
America and
Japan. These
countries are
very well
known for
animations. In
many aspects,
they have
many
differences and
similarities.
This article will
focus on their
15
differences.
In a drawing style, modern America animation
are usually draw in 3D. In America, they
consider animation as mimesis (mimesis
means to imitate something), so they are
trying to make animation as alive as possible.
In “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, they
spend a lot of money to make it more
nature. In this aspect, 3D is correct for
purpose. In contrast, in Japan, animation is
usually draw in 2D. It is because cost. Using
3D is very expensive. Also, they consider
animation as an extension of cartoons. To
express that, 2D is easier than 3D. Though it
is drawn in 2D, it is very dynamic. They use
various compositions, so they can express 2D
like 3D.
16
American and Japanese animations also have
differences in content. In America, animation
is targeted at a family audience than Japan. It
is because, Japan has a low birth rate, but
America has a relatively large birth rate. But,
in Japan, they make animation for people of
all ages like “Your Name”, “My Neighbor
Totoro”. Japanese people really love
animation. 7 Animations are in the top 10
movies from Japan. It shows that Japanese’s
passion at animation.
Each countries animation have their own
strengths. America animations have
popularity. Japan animations have variety. It is
not superiority, but difference. We can see
the quality of both animations, and choose
which one we prefer.
