Thomas Masingi Exhibition Catalogue 2022
Masculinity Ain’t Working Out (2022) is a body of work that focuses on the relationship between masculinity and mental health. As a young black male, growing up in the neighbourhood of Mahwelereng in Mokopane, I have always been told to “man up” or to “be a man” whenever I was confronted with difficult situations. I grew up believing that showing vulnerability as a male was a sign of weakness. I was always discouraged from showing compassion and empathy. I also grew up in abusive household, which led to me suffering from trauma. Masculinity Ain’t Working Out (2022) was inspired by The Mask You Live In (2015), a documentary that dissects the concept of masculinity.
