WORD SOUP
Language is like a bowl of Alphabet Soup.
A tasty offering of potential words just waiting to be savoured.
We may not realize this at first, but there is a great intuitive creativity that goes into
the words we speak. Our motivation, our audience, our mood, our insight and so
much more, impact the W5 of each word we form.
Think for a moment how you may choose to speak to a friend vs a child vs a
colleague vs a parent and so on.
They are all slightly different. Since we’ve been choosing our words since childhood
it doesn’t seem like a creative effort, but with a little self reflection, it’s quite clear
that the creativity is there.
Just like everyday speech, studies in linguistics and psychology have shown that we
are also primed for poetry. That’s right, not only can we naturally recognize good
poetic verse, it turns out that we are ALL considered intuitive poets ourselves.
Why is that even something to care about? Well, for starters this means we have a
innate avenue of creativity that we’ve been working with for years. One that we can
use to creatively capture moments as we would a camera or a painting. A personal
approach to capturing our own story in word.
So how can you introduce a habit of poetry in your life?
Well, a good first step is understanding the kind of poetry you like and to be realistic
about how much time you can and want to designate to creating your very own word
magic.
The good news?
You can start small.
Poetry can be as easy or as intricate as you’d like.
You might want to start with a short catchy freeform rhyme:
How fun is it to catch a phrase
that dances in your mind for days.
Make up a lyric for a song
That makes you feel like you belong
Cont’d

Or pick a word that embodies your day/week/month/etc. Creating what is called an
Acrostic Poem out of it:
P oems can be fun to write
O des to savour with delight
E xpressing an everyday event
T hemes, rhymes and prose that you invent
R eal satisfaction you may find
Y arns created from your very mind
These forms of poetry are only the tip of the iceburg of how you can craft your
words into enduring expressions of who you are or who you were in the moment of
writing. To get you started, it is said that there are considered to be 4 formal types
of poems:
Haikus which use a three line framework of 5, then 7 and lastly 5 syllables. Like all
poems, they can be created with a serious or deeper meaning, they can also capture
the fun of an event or idea like the Haiku spelled out on the opposite page.
Limericks are silly or humorous poems that contain a total of five lines and a rhythm
of AABBA. Here is a famous example by Dixon Lanier Merritt:
A wonderful bird is a Pelican
His bill holds more than his belican
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the helican.
Sonnets which William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth and many more were
quite famous for. This is a poem that contains 10 syllables in each of it’s 14 rhyming
lines.
Free Verse Poetry. These are poems that need not rhyme or follow any rhythmic
limitations. But if you’re a rhyme nerd like me, this is the perfect way to rhyme to
your heart’s content with zero restrictions.
Writers choice.
The ultimate freedom
On the following page is free flowing Ode to Coffee
by Kelly Roper.

An Ode To Coffee
Beautiful brown liquid steaming in my cup,
Becoming a muddy river as I stir in the cream.
The aroma that gives me courage,
The flavour that tastes like hope for a better day,
And the energy that renews my will to live.
Tomorrow we will do it all again my friend.
Any topic right down to your basic cuppa coffee or soup, is an open invitation.
Your creative poetic potential is simply waiting for your pen to land on paper.
All of your heartwarming, witty and personal sentiments can easily be captured within
the context of an existing sketchbook, journal, or become a stand-alone creative
memento itself. Welcome poetry as a quick, fun and catchy way for you to capture the
moments that have made you smile every day in this beautiful life.
Uplifting poetry is a beautiful touchstone for those days when you do need a lift.

Have you ever heard of Shinrin-yoku?
I’m betting that you may have.
Or at least you’re familiar with the idea.
We know it around these parts (North America) by the name of Forest Bathing or
Forest Therapy.
It’s true that the concept of spending time in nature isn’t new, but the idea of
Forest Bathing was first fostered by the Japanese Government in the 80’s, to
prompt individuals to get out of the concrete jungle and get back to nature.
Literally to bathe their senses in the multitude of benefits nature provides.
To understand these benefits, let’s first look to the trees.
All trees contain antimicrobial wood oils that are released into the air. These oils,
called Phytoncides, penetrate our immune system with every breath we take.
Wood oils which in nature protect trees from insects, disease and fungus appear
to trigger cells within humans called natural killer cells. These cells are instrumental
in fighting cancer within our bodies.
Seem to good to be true? Well, in one study conducted, participants gave
blood before a three (3) day, two (2) night forest bathing trip. This set a base
from which Natural Killer Cell activity was monitored for the following 30 days.
What did they observe?*
That a significant and consistent increase in Natural Killer Cell activity took place
for duration of that month. Wow.
Our bodies and immune systems also respond to tree Phytoncides by reducing
adrenaline and cortisol (the stress hormone), relieving symptoms of asthma,
high blood pressure, plus skin and heart conditions. If this all wasn’t enough, the
forest washes away muscle tension leaving us in a more mindful and positively
mood altered state.
Our mind’s altered state meant an increase our focus, clarity and connection
with the world around us. Enough that our sleep and moods are noticeably improved.
Can’t get out to the woods?
Then find a local park you can spend time in. Of course the amount of trees,
outside stressors including noise and pollution can factor into your personal
results, but any increase in the above mentioned shifts is significantly better than
the concrete jungle alternative.
If you are feeling stressed out or at your wits end, look to the trees for-rest.
*A series of parameters including restrictions in food, alcohol consumption, other health
promoting activities and more were put in place to ensure the results did in fact come from
the act of forest bathing itself. This study and all it’s details can be easily looked up in google
under:
“effects of forest bathing.”
