Bridgestone wins NTDA<br />

Industry Marketing Campaign<br />

of the Year award<br />

Bridgestone’s ultra-high performance Potenza<br />

Sport tyre is responsible for another award,<br />

after an adrenalin fuelled marketing campaign<br />

won a prestigious marketing honour.<br />

Bridgestone’s targeted outreach - directly to motoring<br />

enthusiasts - won the Industry Marketing Campaign of the<br />

Year prize at the NTDA Awards at the NEC.<br />

Bridgestone aimed its Potenza Sport campaign – which ran<br />

from April 1 to June 30 - to consumers making more informed<br />

decisions than the average tyre buyer and addressed their<br />

passion for driving.<br />

Bridgestone’s North Region Managing Director Andrea Manenti<br />

said: “We wanted to focus on amplifying the factors of emotion<br />

and passion and projecting them directly to consumers. We<br />

created an innovative marketing campaign that not only emitted<br />

exhilaration and excitement, but also left a lasting impression at<br />

the same time. It was carefully targeted at the automotive high<br />

performance B2C audience and we were pleased with the strong<br />

results.<br />

“Based on its key objectives, generating demand was a key<br />

focus. We needed to create desire and excitement of the<br />

product, which meant focusing on the sensory experience. We<br />

did this by playing on the feeling of driving before the quality of<br />

the product itself. This created a tangible impression with the<br />

audience, with a focus on experience and feeling. Additionally,<br />

with the focus on sales generation, we targeted an already<br />

interested audience by looking at their web behaviour and how<br />

they searched for information so they could be targeted more<br />

precisely.”<br />

Local businessman transforms<br />

empty industrial unit into<br />

£250,000 cosmetic vehicle<br />

repair business<br />

In spite of the challenging economic climate, an enterprising Lincoln resident has defied<br />

the odds and transformed an empty industrial unit into a quarter of a million-pound<br />

cosmetic vehicle repair business, in just one year.<br />

Russell Hudson, owner of Revive! Lincoln, took on the empty<br />

unit in North Hykeham in June 2021 with ambitious plans<br />

to build a rapid repair centre, to complement the already<br />

successful mobile repair business he launched in 2006. Russell’s<br />

vision soon became reality, quickly going from an empty unit with no<br />

staff to a state-of-the-art facility offering a high-quality cosmetic<br />

vehicle repair service to motorists in the Lincoln area.<br />

Russell said: “We have already invested heavily in the repair<br />

centre to provide a variety of specialist services to motorists in the<br />

Lincoln area, and the number of people we’ve helped get back on<br />

the road and the success we’ve had has really motivated us to grow<br />

even more.<br />

“Our team have worked incredibly hard to make the rapid<br />

repair centre a success and our focus is always on convenience<br />

for the customer. We hope that, despite the tough economic<br />

circumstances people are in right now, this shows that you can still<br />

grow a successful business if you do the little things well and treat<br />

people the right way.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> centre provides a long list of specialist repair services for<br />

motorists in the Lincoln area, including diamond cut refurbishment,<br />

powder coating and colour changes for alloy wheels, as well as<br />

vehicle body paint repairs, with the time it takes to conduct repairs<br />

being much faster than a conventional body shop. For longer<br />

repairs, the business offers a courtesy car to customers while their<br />

vehicle is being repaired.<br />

A large part of Russell’s success can be attributed to his high level<br />

of customer service, demonstrated by Revive! Lincoln’s Trustpilot<br />

reviews, with 98% of customers rating the service as excellent or<br />

good.<br />

of lifts for vehicle workshops. With wheel-free lifting as<br />

<strong>The</strong> Blend 2022 hailed<br />

a unique success<br />

Community-driven garage management system <strong>Garage</strong> Hive<br />

hosted its largest conference to date. <strong>The</strong> Blend 2022 took place<br />

on Saturday 17th September at Birmingham’s Eastside Rooms.<br />

Conference attendance was capped at 230 people after<br />

surging registrations. <strong>The</strong> buzz ahead of the event proved<br />

well founded as a mix of the customer community,<br />

interested garages, supporting suppliers and industry speakers<br />

were all ably hosted by the <strong>Garage</strong> Hive team.<br />

<strong>The</strong> keynote address from <strong>Garage</strong> Hive Managing Director Ray<br />

Dilsons opened <strong>The</strong> Blend at 9:30am in the state-of-the-art<br />

venue, as a string of exciting innovations were announced.<br />

Enhancements to the <strong>Garage</strong> Hive system included the<br />

automated addition of external reviews (such as Google and<br />

Trustpilot) to the existing ‘Net Promoter’ surveys, real-time<br />

gross profit targeting and tracking, ‘stopwatch’ measurements to<br />

monitor process flows, as well as improvements to the existing<br />

online booking facility which now supports online enquiries<br />

automatically creating estimates within the system.<br />

Ray also reported that the parts ordering integration with<br />

GSF Car Parts, launched in July, had been successful with more<br />

suppliers expected to follow.<br />

Major announcements to streamline tyre sales included<br />

a partnership with event sponsors Micheldever to integrate<br />

systems. This will be supported by direct real-time tyre scan tool<br />

connectivity to make identification and generation of tyre or wheel<br />

alignment quotations quick, simple and accurate.<br />

<strong>The</strong> final update introduced ‘<strong>Garage</strong> Industry Trends’ – a new<br />

standalone data aggregation service. Customers agreeing to share<br />

anonymised information can unlock insights into how key metrics<br />

and performance indicators such as labour rate, invoice value,<br />

bookings and net promoter score compare with industry averages.<br />

During the conference garages were then able to pick and<br />

choose from a matrix of three speakers in each of three sessions,<br />

with plenty of time to meet other delegates and event sponsors<br />

including Castrol, Autotech Group, Diagnostic Connection, Pichler<br />

Following the conference, an evening dinner followed. David<br />

Massey of ADS Automotive, a supporter of <strong>The</strong> Blend from its<br />

inception, delivered an entertaining speech before announcing<br />

award-winners.<br />

EAC Telford were voted ‘<strong>The</strong> <strong>Garage</strong>’s <strong>Garage</strong> of the Year’<br />

for helping and inspiring others. ‘Top <strong>Garage</strong> Hive Community<br />

Contributor of the Year’ was Laura Guild from Ewan Lawson Motors<br />

for extensive support of the Facebook Community. Finally, Fitch<br />

Autos were recognised as ‘<strong>The</strong> Beta Tester of the Year’ for helping<br />

finetune new features before release.<br />

“We’d like to thank everyone that helped make <strong>The</strong> Blend 2022<br />

our best event yet,” said Ray Dilsons. “Having started <strong>The</strong> Blend<br />

for just 60 people in 2019 we’re delighted at how far this has<br />

developed.<br />

“We’ll be back in 2023; the energy and enthusiasm of our<br />

sponsors and customers, who’ve supported us in big numbers,<br />

genuinely makes this a pleasure to host.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> Blend aims to meet the needs of garage owners wishing<br />

IT TAKES TWO<br />

Over the past 17 years, Roy and Liz Hutchings have built a successful business that’s<br />

driven by unwavering teamwork. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Garage</strong> and MOT meets the dynamic duo to<br />

find out who wears the trousers in this family-run garage.<br />

Nestled on an industrial estate not too far from the rustinducing<br />

salty air of the English Channel, Bognor Regisbased<br />

Hutchings Vehicle Services started out as a go-to<br />

centre for French-made cars from the likes of Citroën and<br />

Peugeot. Since opening its doors in 2005, however, the business<br />

has evolved into an all-makes garage that is part of the Eurorepar<br />

Car Service network.<br />

Just the two of us<br />

“This is it!”, is Liz’s response when asked about the team at<br />

Hutchings. Indeed, while the business has gone from strength to<br />

strength, growing its customer base and expanding its service<br />

offering, Liz and Roy have never needed to bring in additional staff.<br />

<strong>The</strong> pair, it seems, have been able to make things work by having<br />

a clear understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses. “I<br />

may not be allowed to touch emails”, says Roy, “but the workshop<br />

is my pride and joy. No matter what happens, we always work<br />

together when we need to.”<br />

Behind the scenes and in the office is where Liz works her magic<br />

– taking care of every customer’s individual needs. It’s thanks to her<br />

quality of customer service that people come back time and time<br />

again.<br />

“Having Liz in the office is very handy. People don’t want some<br />

greasy mechanic telling them what’s wrong with their car”, explains<br />

Roy. Confirming her husband’s sentiments, Liz says that “I tell the<br />

customers what they need to know, without all the jargon. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

don’t need any of that tech talk that the average person won’t<br />

understand.”<br />

“Giving customers peace of mind is what makes us stand out,” Liz<br />

explains. “We tell every customer exactly how much the job will<br />

cost, subject to parts changes”. It is this transparency, Liz believes,<br />

that has ensured Hutchings’ customer loyalty for all these years.<br />

“It’s all about managing expectations,” she continues. “We make<br />

it our mission to ensure that the customer gets a fair price for any<br />

given job. If it’s a cambelt job, for example, a lot of garages will<br />

simply give a fixed price for a cambelt. But of course when you do<br />

a cambelt job, if it’s driven by a water pump, you want a cambelt,<br />

a water pump, and a drive belt. We break down the price to let the<br />

customer know exactly what they need.”<br />

Keeping in the loop<br />

For Roy, another secret to Hutchings’ success is his desire to keep<br />

up to date with industry news and developments. “I’ve always tried<br />

to keep up with what’s happening. <strong>The</strong> only problem for me is that<br />

whenever I need to attend a training course, I have no choice but<br />

to shut the garage. This can make it quite difficult to stay on top of<br />

technical training and current practices, but it has to be done.”<br />

To supplement his training, Roy keeps his knowledge topped<br />

up by reading trade magazines and by scrolling through technical<br />

and business content on YouTube and Facebook. But Roy has<br />

something else up his sleeve that is even more valuable.<br />

“I was an early adopter of the EV training programmes. We’re<br />

geared up to work on electric cars as they gradually take over the<br />

market. I think that hydrogen and electric hybrid powertrains will<br />

dominate the market going forward, but whatever the outcome,<br />

we’ll be ready”.<br />

Roy is already beginning to notice changes to the type of work<br />

that he carries out on a day-to-day basis. At present, providing<br />

diagnostic services to customers with electric cars is becoming<br />

much more common.<br />

“I’ve always been known for the diagnostic work that I do, so<br />

working on the newer electric vehicles of today fits in quite nicely<br />

with what I’ve been doing throughout my career”, Roy enthuses.<br />

<strong>The</strong> road ahead<br />

Like many other garages around the country that are preparing for<br />

the era of electrification, Hutchings knows it needs all the support<br />

it can get.<br />

As a member of the Eurorepar Car Service network – an initiative<br />

run by the Stellantis Group – Hutchings benefits from business,<br />

technical and marketing support, as well as access to one of the<br />

most comprehensive ranges of spare parts for all major makes and<br />

models. Of equal significance to Roy and Liz, however, is the fact<br />

that they remain proudly independent, focused on honest service<br />

and a willingness to go the extra mile for its customers.<br />

Joining Eurorepar gave Hutchings a sense of security, but also<br />

a new sense of direction for the business. Keen to share the long<br />

part of it. All it took was a quick email and the rest is history.<br />

<strong>Garage</strong>s must be ready to handle the<br />

different refrigerant types on the market<br />

To support its long-term net zero<br />

strategy, in 2006 the EU introduced<br />

the mobile air conditioning (MAC)<br />

directive. Its goal is to gradually phase out<br />

fluorinated greenhouse gases – or F-gases<br />

– which are harmful for the environment.<br />

F-gases exceed a set limit for how much<br />

they contribute to global warming, known as<br />

their ‘global warming potential’ (GWP).<br />

Although this legislation has been around<br />

for a while, we are now approaching a<br />

tipping point when it comes to servicing<br />

air con systems. An F-gas called R134A –<br />

known in the trade as ‘old gas’ – hasn’t been<br />

used in new vehicles since January 2017, at<br />

which point all new cars, and car-derived<br />

vans, started to use R1234yf – or ‘new<br />

gas’ – thanks to its superior sustainability<br />

credentials.<br />

But while R1234yf is the standard in new<br />

vehicles, until recently it has been relatively<br />

uncommon in the independent aftermarket.<br />

<strong>The</strong> majority of so-called ‘new gas’ systems<br />

have remained largely under manufacturer<br />

warranty and have gone back to the<br />

dealership for servicing. But garages should<br />

expect more and more ‘new gas’ vehicles to<br />

come through their doors over the coming<br />

months – meaning it’s critical they prepare<br />

now.<br />

Training and equipment requirements<br />

Most air con systems are fundamentally<br />

the same from vehicle to vehicle – but the<br />

requirements for handling the different<br />

refrigerants in them are not. One of the key<br />

reasons for this is that refrigerants can react<br />

with each other, which can be dangerous. If<br />

you’re conducting a re-gassing, for example,<br />

and use the wrong product, this can damage<br />

the internal systems and lead to premature<br />

failure.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are also differences in core pieces<br />

of equipment used for old and new gas<br />

systems. Technicians must use distinct ports<br />

to connect to different refrigerant machines,<br />

and R1234yf requires specialist recovery and<br />

recycling equipment to allow waste products<br />

to be captured safely. R1234yf is also<br />

flammable, meaning the recovery machines<br />

associated with these refrigerants are<br />

designed with the required safety features<br />

in place, such as ‘spark-free’ technology or<br />

additional built-in fans for cooling.<br />

As for R134A, technicians are required<br />

to complete specialist F-gas training so<br />

they can confidently handle and dispose<br />

of it safely, and ensure that they don’t<br />

inadvertently harm the environment when<br />

working with old gas. We’re encouraging<br />

technicians to complete dedicated air<br />

con courses through our LKQ Academy, to<br />

ensure they have all the required skills at<br />

their fingertips.<br />

<strong>The</strong> refrigerant handling training we<br />

offer covers the key principles of vapour<br />

compression cycles and refrigerants, as<br />

well as hazards and working practices, and<br />

how to safely conduct key process such as<br />

recovery and disposal of gases, pressure<br />

testing and leak checking. <strong>The</strong> courses also<br />

equip technicians with an understanding of<br />

the environmental impact of the gases they<br />

work with.<br />

Broader cooling and climate qualifications,<br />

covering everything from oils, UV dyes,<br />

flushing and tooling, as well as more<br />

advanced pressure and temperature<br />

diagnostics, are also key to ensure<br />

technicians can service any air con system<br />

safely and effectively, and reassure their<br />

customer that they’re in the best possible<br />

hands.<br />

A final word on training and equipment –<br />

as we head into the air con ‘off season’, now<br />

is a great time for garages to book a service<br />

for their air con machines. Leave it until the<br />

hot weather comes back and it might be<br />

hard to get an appointment. It pays to think<br />

ahead so garages can hit the ground running<br />

next summer.<br />

Customer engagement<br />

Educating drivers about the specific<br />

servicing requirements of their air con<br />

systems is key to driving trust, loyalty<br />

and repeat custom. A key difference<br />

between R134A and R1234yf, aside from<br />

their environmental credentials, is the<br />

need for more frequent re-gasses with<br />

‘new gas’ – something most drivers are<br />

unaware of. Using digital tools such as<br />

garage management systems (GMS) – such<br />

as CarSys, available exclusively to LKQ Euro<br />

Car Parts customers – is a simple, quick<br />

way to contact customers who already have<br />

services due.<br />

And even though R134A does not require<br />

such frequent servicing, we still encourage<br />

garages to conduct air con system checks as<br />

standard, to see whether a refresher would<br />

be beneficial. Even minor tweaks to the<br />

system will deliver noticeable improvements<br />

in comfort, as well as enhancing the health<br />

and performance of the vehicle. Ultimately,<br />

it’s up to the customer, but it’s worth giving<br />

them the option.<br />

Air con servicing is a big revenue<br />

opportunity for independent workshops –<br />

and one we’re here to help them unlock, by<br />

providing products, training and equipment,<br />

while helping them stay on the right side of<br />

the law.<br />

R1234yf is about to overtake R134A as<br />

the most commonly used refrigerant gas<br />

in the UK car parc. But the make-up of the<br />

current car parc is such that our advice to<br />

workshops is to be ready and able to work<br />

with both ‘old’ and ‘new’ gas, to avoid having<br />

to turn away work.<br />

New innovations on a new<br />

and existing markets from TMG<br />

After a long four year wait due to the<br />

Covid Pandemic, Techno Marketing<br />

Group (TMG) finally returned to the<br />

Automechanika Show 2022 at Frankfurt,<br />

Germany in September as exhibitors to<br />

showcase their various technologically,<br />

advanced range of products and brands<br />

alongside the innovative developments that<br />

have been achieved since the last event in<br />

2018. TMG is globally recognised as industry<br />

leading experts in (mobile) wheel servicing,<br />

battery service and Ergonomic Handling<br />

Products.<br />

One of the highlights on the TMG booth<br />

was the ecube Generation 4 mobile tyre<br />

service unit. Constant demonstrations<br />

attracted different types of groups. New<br />

service fleet owners gathered, traditional<br />

workshops were impressed. Besides the<br />

ecube machine, a brand new ‘mobile<br />

energy’ Powerbox unit has been released<br />

on the show. <strong>The</strong> original Powerbox which<br />

supplies the ecube service unit has been<br />

transformed into a stand-alone unit available<br />

for all markets due to its modular design.<br />

<strong>The</strong> system can be expanded in both ways of<br />

capacity and power. In this way the customer<br />

requirements can always be fulfilled.<br />

Rory Bouman, Executive Assistant at<br />

TMG, points out that the Battery box has a<br />

standard 5,2kWh capacity which can be put<br />

in line with up to 15 battery boxes currently.<br />

<strong>The</strong> product is 100% designed, developed and<br />

produced in <strong>The</strong> Netherlands.<br />

With a choice of outputs like an Type 2 EV<br />

outlet, the new Powerbox is expected to become<br />

an impressive selection of features and<br />

benefits including a dual piston pump to<br />

guarantee easy lifting, a rugged universal<br />

joint and wide front wheels that enables<br />

precise and efficient load control plus a two<br />

piece fully detachable handle. <strong>The</strong> product<br />

also provides a highly flexible 130mm to<br />

470mm lifting range and has a heavy steel<br />

<strong>The</strong> Winntec brand were also showcasing<br />

its ‘unique’ tire cart to its range – ‘<strong>The</strong><br />

Dominator’: a heavy duty, high performance<br />

Tire Cart which has been specifically<br />

produced for daily use and long term service<br />

within the EU and has Italian industrial<br />

wheels. Gaither also released this year their<br />

Bead Bazooka gen 2 with an improved &<br />

more user-friendly 2 inch valve system.<br />

Enva drives forward with oil<br />

filter recycling plant<br />

Leading recycling and resource recovery specialist, Enva, has today announced the opening of<br />

a new recycling facility for used oil filters and oily rags at its Bilsthorpe site in Nottinghamshire.<br />

<strong>The</strong> new £2.5 million facility can process over 10,000 tonnes<br />

a year of oil filters and oily rags collected by Enva from<br />

workshops and the automotive and industrial sectors across<br />

the UK. In doing so, Enva will internalise the processing of this<br />

material maximising the volume and quality of the materials that<br />

are recovered.<br />

Oil filters are first shredded before passing through multiple<br />

recycling technologies including two centrifuges to recover the<br />

waste oil, which then undergoes further treatment at Enva’s<br />

existing oil treatment facility also located on the site. Magnets and<br />

eddy current separators extract ferrous and non-ferrous metals,<br />

and plastics are also separated. <strong>The</strong> remaining solid material ends<br />

up as an oily cardboard fluff which is used in the production of a<br />

sustainable waste derived fuel for energy intensive industries.<br />

Commenting on the opening, Enva’s Specialist Waste Director,<br />

Michael Sneath, said: “This investment is a natural progression<br />

for our business enabling us to realise the environmental and<br />

commercial benefits of the material we collect from garages<br />

and workshops across the UK. In addition to removing our<br />

dependence on third party processors, the ability to recycle<br />

this material in-house has increased our capacity, enabling us to<br />

collect more waste filters and rags from our customers. We are<br />

also very pleased to lead the way in implementing best available<br />

technology, in partnership with PRM Waste Systems, ensuring we<br />

achieve maximum recovery rates and minimise the impact of the<br />

process on the environment.”<br />

PRM Waste Systems, a specialist recycling equipment supplier<br />

and plant design company are behind the innovative design and<br />

installation.<br />

PRM Waste Systems Sales Director, Mike Swarbrick, said: “We<br />

are delighted to have worked with Enva on this project, we had<br />

big ambitions to build a plant which maximised material recovery<br />

through use of the latest equipment and solutions. During the<br />

bespoke design and build process we overcame many complex<br />

design challenges, successfully innovating to achieve our end goal.<br />

One such challenge was the processing of different materials<br />

including oily rags and used filters. Our in-house design team<br />

came up with a system bypass feature which results in reduced<br />

wear for equipment while also saving a large amount of energy,<br />

therefore improving the overall efficiency of the plant. We are very<br />

proud of the system and look forward to continuing our working<br />

relationship with Enva.”<br />

Enva’s Used Lubricating Oil (ULO) business serves over 12,000<br />

customers across the UK and Ireland collecting over 70 million<br />

litres of ULO every year. Last year the company was awarded the<br />

contract to service 300 Halfords’ AutoCentre sites, collecting and<br />

processing a range of motoring waste, including oils.<br />

Happy customers spend more<br />

money. And that makes me happy!<br />

So I’m out shopping with my family on a rainy Sunday afternoon<br />

when my phone rings. It’s one of my customers, the doctor<br />

from Swindon. He’s clearly not happy from the speed of<br />

which he’s talking & the language he’s using! I let him fire off for<br />

a few minutes before calming him down & asking what’s actually<br />

happened? Turns out the good doctor had his door mirror knocked<br />

off & the other car just drove off.<br />

Bugger!<br />

Okay, what can I say, what does he want me to do? It’s a Sunday<br />

afternoon & no supplier is open. So all I can do is calm him down<br />

& reassure him. It’s probably also what he needs to hear right now.<br />

“Don’t worry. I’ll order you a new one tomorrow, paint & fit it for you.<br />

Come up & see me on Tuesday afternoon. It’s still safe to drive & it’ll<br />

be cheaper than going through your insurance. Don’t let it ruin your<br />

weekend”<br />

Easy for me to say, my mirrors are still attached to my car!<br />

I confirm which side it is & which part of the mirror is broken so I<br />

know what to order the next day. <strong>The</strong> next morning I go in to work &<br />

the first thing I do is pull up his details. I call BMW & order the off side<br />

mirror housing, cap & glass along with the correct colour paint can. I<br />

then drop him a text to let him know I’ve ordered all the parts, so he<br />

knows it’s being dealt with.<br />

Tuesday morning the parts arrive & straight away I put some<br />

paint onto the cap, which I gradually build up during the day. By the<br />

afternoon I put some coats of lacquer on & it starts to look nice. I<br />

send another quick text to let him know it’s being painted. By the<br />

time he arrives in the late afternoon it’s dried & ready for fitting. I<br />

quickly remove the old one & polish all the scratches off the door<br />

before fitting the new one. Give the cap a quick flat & polish & it<br />

looks as good as new.<br />

Why am I sharing this story with you? Simple.<br />

It’s all about customer service. I didn’t have to answer my phone<br />

on a Sunday. He didn’t have to have my direct number. I could have<br />

asked him to call the office on Monday & book it in through the usual<br />

channels. But I didn’t. I chose to calm him down over the phone by<br />

listening to him before comforting him by assuring him it’s a simple<br />

job. By asking the relevant questions I’m able to order the correct<br />

parts the next day. I have his details on the system so I know what his<br />

paint code is. He’s already confirmed which side & that the glass was<br />

ok but the mirror housing is hanging off & the cap is broken.<br />

All he had to do was make one phone call. I did all the rest. That’s<br />

what customer service is. Make it easy for them, think about their<br />

situation, consider their feelings. Remember most customers are not<br />

mechanics, they think everything is a big deal or more involved than<br />

it actually is.<br />

Why did I order the glass even though he confirmed it was ok, I hear<br />

you ask?<br />

Just in case I broke it when changing it. That could have been really<br />

awkward! Don’t worry, I returned it the next day, but by having it<br />

there he knew I had every angle covered.<br />

Happy customers spend more money. And that makes me happy!<br />

Dealers urged to combine<br />

MOT and vehicle service alerts to<br />

maximise aftersales conversions<br />

A new survey commissioned by Marketing<br />

Delivery has found that 77% of UK motorists<br />

would be more likely to book their car into a<br />

workshop that found a way to combine MOT<br />

and service work into a single visit.<br />

<strong>The</strong> findings are consistent with the<br />

experience of Marketing Delivery’s<br />

dealer partners. <strong>The</strong> company<br />

evaluated conversion rates from its<br />

automated email aftersales marketing<br />

campaigns from January to September<br />

2022, and found that messages intended to<br />

encourage an MOT booking had an average<br />

conversion rate of 12%, while those for a<br />

service had an average 35% conversion.<br />

However, when the automated messages<br />

were timed to facilitate MOT and service<br />

work into a single visit by the customer, the<br />

booking conversion figures increased to an<br />

average of 42%.<br />

In Marketing Delivery’s new consumer<br />

survey, which polled 1,000 motorists across<br />

the UK, those aged 18 to 24 were the<br />

most receptive to the idea of a combined<br />

appointment for both MOT and service,<br />

with 85% saying they would be more likely<br />

to book with a workshop that made that<br />

possible.<br />

<strong>The</strong> survey also found that an<br />

overwhelming majority (59%) would prefer<br />

to be reminded about service and MOT<br />

work between three and four weeks before<br />

it is due. Only 13% said they would not be<br />

likely to book a car in for aftersales work<br />

with a dealer or workshop that provided<br />

reminders.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> consumer research and our own<br />

data illustrate the growing importance<br />

of well-targeted automation in digital<br />

comms,” comments Jeremy Evans,<br />

Managing Director at Marketing Delivery.<br />

“Reminders are clearly critical for driving<br />

workshop utilisation, but they create a big<br />

administration burden for the aftersales<br />

department. Automation takes that pain<br />

away, but that is just the start – dealers<br />

need to devise campaigns where messages<br />

are personalised, timely and maximise<br />

convenience for the customer.”<br />

Automotive supplier HELLA, which<br />

operates under the umbrella brand<br />

FORVIA, is, with other partners,<br />

pressing ahead with the development of<br />

a series production-ready steer-by-wire<br />

system solution. With this technology,<br />

steering commands are transmitted fully<br />

electrically without the assistance of<br />

mechanical or hydraulic components, and<br />

this kind of steer-by-wire system could be<br />

in use from 2026.<br />

It will initially be made ready for series<br />

production together with the Lotus Tech<br />

Innovation Centre (LTIC), which is the<br />

research and development facility of the<br />

vehicle manufacturer Geely. Subsequently,<br />

it is planned that the system be rolled out<br />

to other customers inside and outside the<br />

Geely Group.<br />

“Steer-by-wire is one of the main<br />

technologies paving the way to the<br />

automated, software-based vehicle. As a<br />

highly efficient supplier of indispensable<br />

safety-relevant components for fully<br />

electric steering systems, we are at the<br />

forefront of shaping this trend,” remarks<br />

Björn Twiehaus, Managing Director<br />

responsible for the Electronics Business<br />

Group at HELLA.<br />

Since on the one hand steer-by-wire<br />

steering systems dispense with mechanical<br />

or hydraulic components, notably the<br />

steering rod, the settings of the steering<br />

system can be adapted to the customer<br />

or situation. For example, the software<br />

that controls the steering system can be<br />

used to switch flexibly between comfort<br />

and sport modes, and the steering angle<br />

range, steering assistance and active<br />

power feedback can be adapted to the<br />

requirements of the particular driving<br />

situation. <strong>The</strong>re is also no longer a rigid<br />

relationship between steering movement<br />

and wheel behaviour, which means the<br />

required steering wheel lock angle can be<br />

reduced, especially at low speeds.<br />

On the other hand, as the hardware<br />

components have been eliminated,<br />

there is now a whole new range of design<br />

options for the interior. With all-electric<br />

steering systems, the steering wheel in<br />

particular can be completely stowed away<br />

in the dashboard, for example. This is<br />

an essential basic requirement for more<br />

advanced levels of automated driving,<br />

where the driver can relinquish control<br />

of the vehicle and, for example, relax<br />

or turn to other activities. <strong>The</strong> space<br />

freed up could also be used for larger<br />

dashboards or head-up displays. “<strong>The</strong>re is<br />

further potential here, not least through<br />

cooperation with Faurecia, with regard<br />

to the design and functional scope of the<br />

vehicle interior, as well as the cockpit<br />

area,” Twiehaus continues.<br />

<strong>The</strong> steer-by-wire system is being<br />

developed in a network which, in addition<br />

to HELLA as a major subsystem supplier<br />

and LTIC as the launch customer, consists<br />

of other partners. In this context, HELLA<br />

contributes two central components:<br />

the sensors and the control electronics.<br />

<strong>The</strong> hand wheel actuator detects the<br />

respective steering movement and passes<br />

this on to the road wheel actuator via<br />

the electronics, which in turn adjusts<br />

the wheels accordingly. In addition,<br />

because both components communicate<br />

continuously, information can be fed<br />

back, when the vehicle comes into<br />

contact with a kerb, for example. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

components are being developed at the<br />

company’s headquarters in Lippstadt, as<br />

well as in France and India.<br />

“With the series development of key<br />

components for all-electric steering<br />

systems, we are further expanding our<br />

strong market position in this forwardlooking<br />

field of technology,” adds<br />

Twiehaus. <strong>The</strong> series development of<br />

operational designs of steering electronics<br />

is already underway at HELLA, for example.<br />

Using redundant architecture, this ensures<br />

that vehicle control is unrestricted even<br />

in the event of a potential fault. HELLA is<br />

thus expanding its expertise in the field<br />

of X-by-Wire technologies and recently<br />

received the world’s first large-volume<br />

order for a completely electric brake<br />

pedal sensor, which will go into series<br />

production in 2025.<br />

LKQ Euro Car Parts reports 300% increase<br />

in demand for EV and hybrid training<br />

<strong>The</strong> largest supplier of parts, training and equipment in the UK and Irish<br />

automotive aftermarket has reported that demand for the IMI-accredited EV<br />

and hybrid training it offers has increased by more than 300% in just two years.<br />

So far in 2022, LKQ Euro Car Parts –<br />

through its LKQ Academy – has already<br />

trained more than 1,280 technicians<br />

to work with pure electric and hybrid<br />

vehicles.<br />

Another 500 EV and hybrid training<br />

seats have already been booked this year,<br />

and there are more than 300 additional<br />

spaces still available – across more than<br />

20 LKQ Academy locations throughout the<br />

UK and Ireland.<br />

<strong>The</strong> number of seats filled in 2022<br />

to date – with four months still to go –<br />

represents more than a 300% increase on<br />

2020’s annual total.<br />

Since the start of 2020, LKQ Euro Car<br />

Parts has upskilled more than 3,000<br />

technicians working in independent<br />

garages to work with hybrids and EVs.<br />

Bob Wiffen, workshop solutions<br />

director at LKQ Euro Car Parts said: “We<br />

understand that small businesses are<br />

having a difficult time at the moment, and<br />

are doing everything we can to support.<br />

“But while there are undoubtably<br />

challenges to deal with in the present,<br />

aftermarket operators have to have one<br />

eye on the future. And critically, the future<br />

has arrived.<br />

“Hybrids are increasingly commonplace<br />

in the independent aftermarket, and<br />

EVs won’t be far behind, once they start<br />

coming out of warranty at scale.<br />

“Independent garages are already<br />

widely acknowledged to be ahead of the<br />

dealerships on quality of service and value<br />

for money.<br />

“Now is the time to upskill, so that they<br />

can keep pace with a customer base that’s<br />

evolving. Those that move first will enjoy a<br />

competitive advantage locally, at least for<br />

the time being.”<br />

According to LKQ Euro Car Parts,<br />

effective marketing is key – to all garages,<br />

but especially those with a point of<br />

difference when it comes to maintaining<br />

vehicles with zero-emission capability.<br />

As well as retaining existing customers<br />

blame the cold when their car<br />

won’t start on a dark winter’s<br />

have severe consequences on the life of a car battery. Extreme<br />

temperatures can weaken the battery plates, limiting the amount of<br />

congealed, the engine will require more power to start. And at<br />

the same time we rely more on features like lights, heaters and<br />

To help technicians prevent a surge in battery failures over the<br />

months ahead, LKQ Euro Car Parts has announced the return of its<br />

‘Test to Earn’ initiative. Exclusively available to LKQ Euro Car Parts<br />

customers, ‘Test to Earn’ encourages garages to test batteries as<br />

standard whenever any vehicle is bought in for servicing and repair.<br />

As well as putting the spotlight on good battery health, the<br />

initiative will help workshops generate additional revenue through<br />

tester worth £400, which is theirs to keep if they achieve a preagreed<br />

branch manager at Leisureways following<br />

OSRAM and Ring has appointed a new Workshop Solutions Van Sales Manager,<br />

Ehsan Ali, after receiving widespread interest throughout the UK and Ireland for<br />

the joint initiative since it hit the road earlier this year.<br />

in popularity, Ehsan will be on hand to<br />
