FROM THE MANAGER
IAN EVATT
IF A WEEK IS A LONG TIME IN POLITICS, THEN WHAT CAN BE SAID ABOUT FOOTBALL?
We went into last Saturday’s game
at Accrington Stanley on the back
of two defeats and a draw without
troubling the scoresheet. It wasn’t
for a lack of effort but it is fair to say
that that mini-run had played on our
minds and affected our confidence.
But seven days later - going into
today’s game against Oxford United
- and the picture is much brighter
thanks to the manner in which we
won at the Wham Stadium and
Tuesday night’s last-gasp win at
home to Burton Albion.
In both of those games we had to
dig deep and combat a style that
was designed to frustrate us.
We showed unbelievable character,
unbelievable belief and unless the
group is very much together you
don’t come back like that.
This is a really good group. The
strikers have felt a bit of heat of late
and I’m delighted that two of them
have managed to win us the game
against Burton.
I thought the last 20 minutes we
almost played angry after their goal.
I wanted that energy and intensity
but it’s so difficult when there’s so
much disruption.
Great credit to the players because
they kept going. We thought after
Kieran Lee’s one off the post and
Conor’s chance, that it wasn’t going
to be our day. But again, they kept
going and managed to get the
winner. It would have been easy to
settle at 1-1 but we carried on.
We’ve got a great habit of scoring
late goals. We did last season and
we did it again in mid-week.
Our fans showed a tremendous
amount of patience and could see
what was happening in that game.
You were frustrated, we were
frustrated. But we all stick together
and when you’re positive, good
things can happen - and that was
shown on Tuesday.
We all stuck together as a group.
The players did, the staff did and the
crowd were with them all the way
and it ended up being a really good
night for us.
We’ve got excellent players, we’re
able to change games and we’re
able to impact games - and Baka
and Jon Dadi both came on and
made such a huge impact.
Being an attractive football team -
and we want to play from back to
front - I think it’s also really important
we recognise we scored from a long
kick from Traff and a second phase
set-play on Tuesday.
Against those types of teams with
that many disruptions, sometimes
it might be that way for us, but we
found a way to win and good teams
do that.
This afternoon will be a different sort
of challenge and one where we will
have to show more patience and
resilience, but I’m confident that we
will get the job done.
I’d like to welcome Karl Robinson,
his staff, the player and all the
fans who have travelled up to the
University of Bolton Stadium today.
Today is our annual Remembrance
Fixture where we will remember
those who have tragically lost their
lives in conflict, thus making the
ultimate sacrifice. We will always
remember them and we’ll make
sure to commemorate their lives
and show them the respect they
eternally deserve this afternoon.
A huge thanks once again to all our
fans and I hope you enjoy the game.
Ian.
Wanderers came back from two down to register a first ever
away league victory at Accrington Stanley on a ground where
they’d been beaten on each of their previous three visits.
Things got off to a bad start for Ian Evatt’s men when Shaun
Whalley was set up by Joe Pritchard to beat James Trafford
from close range and early into the second half George
Johnston diverted an effort past Trafford and into his own net
to leave Wanderers with a mountain to climb.
Johnston played a key role in Wanderers pulling a goal back
shortly afterwards when his header across goal was turned
into his own goal by Harvey Rodgers after latching onto Jack
Iredale’s cross.
Kieran Lee brought things level from close range after being
picked out by Elias Kachunga when the forward had managed
to latch onto Dapo Afolayan’s deflected cross to steer the ball
back across the six-yard box. Afolayan proved to be the matchwinner
shortly afterwards showing great composure on the
edge of the box to beat his man and rifle a low shot beyond
Toby Savin.
THE SPINE OF THE TEAM
GOALKEEPER | SIMON EASTWOOD
Age: 33 | Previous Club: Blackburn Rovers
Into his seventh season with Oxford United, Eastwood has made over 250
appearances for the club and has been a regular between the sticks this campaign.
Arriving from Blackburn Rovers in June 2016, the Luton-born stopper began his
career with Huddersfield Town after coming through the club’s youth system. Loans
at Woking and Bradford City followed before a move to Oxford United in 2010. Failing
to make an appearance for the U’s during 2010/11, he spent the following season with
Halifax Town before a summer 2012 move to Portsmouth.
Signing for Blackburn Rovers after a single season at Fratton Park, he stayed at Ewood
Park for three years (2013-2016) and made 20 appearances for the club during that time.
CENTRE BACK | ELLIOTT MOORE
Age: 25 | Previous Club: Leicester City
Now an established member of the Oxford defence, the 25-year-old signed
for United in August 2019, moving from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.
Coming through the ranks with the Foxes, Moore never got his break in the
first team although he gained invaluable experience from two seasons on
loan in Belgium with OH Leuven.
A regular in the team ever since his move to the Kassam Stadium, he has
made 11 appearances so far this season and in total for the club, he has made
a total of 135 appearances (8 goals).
CENTRE MIDFIELDER | CAMERON BRANNAGAN
Age: 26 | Previous Club: Liverpool
A talented central midfielder and the key cog in this Oxford United team,
Brannagan enjoyed his best season to date last term, scoring 14 goals in 44
appearances – performances linking him with a move to the Championship.
He’s enjoyed a bright start to this season too, and he’s managed 7 goals in
18 appearances so far. Since his move to the Kassam Stadium from Liverpool
in January 2018, the Manchester-born midfielder has made a total of 206
appearances (36 goals). He made 9 appearances for Liverpool during his
time at Anfield and he also had a brief spell on loan at Fleetwood Town in
2017.
STRIKER | KYLE JOSEPH
Age: 21 | On loan from: Swansea City
Joseph is enjoying a bright start to life on loan at Oxford United and his goal
in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Portsmouth was his sixth of the season since joining
on loan from Swansea City.
A Scotland U21 international, Joseph has made just 12 appearances for the
Swans since his £500,000 switch to South Wales from Wigan Athletic in July
2021 and he spent much of the first half of the 2021/22 season on loan at
Cheltenham Town. In 22 appearances for the Robins, he scored 4 goals.
THE BOSS…
Appointed as Manager of Oxford United in March 2018, Robinson is
currently into his fifth full season at the Kassam Stadium and despite a
slow start to the season, he’ll be hoping to have his side in the mix for
a place in the play-offs – as has been the case in each of the last three
seasons.
Given his first managerial role at MK Dons in May 2010 at the age of just
29, Robinson has over a decade of experience coaching and managing
in the professional game despite being the relatively young age of 42.
During just over six years at Stadium MK, Robinson managed to guide
the club into the Championship for the first time in 2014/15 and between
his time at MK and Oxford, he also spent 18 months or so in charge at
Charlton Athletic.
The Wham Stadium, or Crown
Ground depending on your age,
has not been a particularly happy
hunting ground for the Wanderers
and it was pleasing to finally get
that first League victory there on
Saturday.
The 7-1 defeat there in November
2019, followed two weeks later
by an EFL Trophy knockout by
2-0, set the pattern that continued
last season when a Tommy Leigh
goal gave Stanley the points. Even
the Wanderers youth team were
knocked out of the FA Youth Cup
there last season.
#22 KYLE
DEMPSEY
20 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888

A TRUE COMPETITOR – NO-ONE NEEDS TO TELL
KYLE DEMPSEY HOW HE’S PLAYED.
The Wanderers’ midfield man
is his own harshest critic as he
strives to be the best he can be.
By his own admission he’s not yet
at the top of his game on a regular
basis.
But Dempsey won’t rest until he
gets there and already this season
has heightened the bar with some
of his performances in helping the
Whites into the top six.
“I think this year I’ve shown the
side the fans wanted to see when
I joined in January,” said Dempsey
– one of Wanderers’ top transfer
targets when he made the move
back north from Gillingham in the
winter transfer window.
“I was unfortunate picking up
injuries left, right and centre when
I joined and coming back from
that knee injury I had, with the
operation.
“I think this year I’ve shown – I
wouldn’t say consistently and I’m
still harsh on myself when it comes
to my performances – a lot higher
level of what I can bring to the
team.
“Wycombe was a great day for me
and it’s now trying to build on that.”
Dempsey’s two-goal showing
against Wycombe in his first
appearance of the season back
in August underlined the qualities
the former Carlisle United,
Huddersfield Town and Fleetwood
man brings to Ian Evatt’s squad.
He’s not a man to rest on his
laurels as he showed with his
reaction via social media to
Tuesday night’s epic win over
Burton Albion.
“I’ll say it again great character
from the team!! We keep going
until the end. We keep the
momentum going. Below my
standards but continue to work
hard to get back to my best,”
Dempsey Tweeted.
But that came just four days
after another power-packed
performance at Accrington to
help set up the first of two thrilling
comeback wins in a row.
“I was unfortunate against
Cheltenham to get knocked off
the pitch and land on the concrete
which did a bit of damage towards
my hip,” Dempsey added.
“I’ve tried to shake that off and last
Saturday was a great game in a
different way.
“To come back from 2-0 down
with the support we had there was
absolutely fantastic – especially
listening to the crowd and seeing
the joy on the faces when we
came back.
“That was absolutely great and at
home the fans have been amazing
to me, as well.
“For me now, it’s to try and kick on
for the rest of the season and try
and score as many goals, as many
assists and put in as many highlevel
performances as I can until
the end.”
After recovering from the hip injury
that forced him to miss Wanderers’
defeat at Forest Green and
returning via the bench against
Barnsley a fortnight ago, Dempsey
has started the Whites’ last three
games.
That has coincided with wins in
the Papa Johns Trophy and six
points from six in League One to lift
Evatt’s men back up to fifth spot in
League One.
Given the fight for places in
the Wanderers’ midfield that
doesn’t guarantee another start
against Oxford United today, but
with several strings to his bow
Dempsey is able to offer the
manager a number of invaluable
options.
“I think you can see with the squad
the gaffer has built this year, the
competition for places is massive,”
said the 27-year-old.
“For me, that drives my standards
on even more. You know you’’ve
got to do that extra bit in the gym,
you’ve got to keep yourself as
sharp and fit as you can and the
standard of training is incredible.
“It’s maintaining your standards,
training as a high level as you can
and playing as well as you can to
keep your place in the team.”
“I had that conversation with
the gaffer about the versatility,”
Dempsey added. “I can play one of
the 6s (holding players), I can play
the 8 and I can play the 10.
“I think my main position is the
8 when we do play the 8. That’s
been my natural position all my
life and even on Saturday I felt
comfortable in there.
“I find myself in better areas
and understand that position a
lot better but I’m working hard
behind the scenes to learn that
10 (attacking) role and be able to
find myself in better goalscoring
positions and for creating
opportunities.
“I’ve also played the 6 a few times
in my career as well, so I’m familiar
with that, so it definitely helps me
and the versatility will always be
better in my stead when trying to
keep my place in the team.”
Dempsey will do whatever it takes
to perform on a personal and
collective level to help the Whites
continue their climb.
And after a potentially pivotal
week, is hoping Wanderers can
continue to kick on from here
as scrap for places near the top
warms up.
“It looked as though at one
stage Accrington was going
to be another Forest Green or
ON OUR PITCH
WE’RE ABLE
TO PLAY OUR
EXPANSIVE WAY
AND TEAMS
STRUGGLE TO
DEAL WITH THAT.
Cheltenham where we’ve not
performed to our standard and got
stuck in the way they play,” he said.
“It’s a really tough place to go and
they made it a really competitive
game but even at 2-0 down we
believed, lifted the intensity and
got the ball moving at a lot quicker
tempo and got the win.
“On our pitch we’re able to play
our expansive way and teams
struggle to deal with that.
“It’s just coming up against teams
on tighter pitches when maybe the
surface sometimes isn’t as good.
We’ve just got to find a way to win
and on Saturday we were able to
do that.
“Hopefully it’s a turning point for us.
We’ve got to believe in those types
of games that even at 2-0 down
we can come back and we’ve got
to start games like we ended the
game.
“If we start like that for the whole
game, away from home should
take care of itself, and then we
showed the same spirit on Tuesday
night to win here.
“Teams aren’t going to make it
easy but the ability in the squad
is beyond question and with the
character we’ve got, we know we
can find a way.
“Hopefully we can do the same
today and that’s the thing with
League One. You’ve just got to stay
with it and stay within that top six.
“It’s a marathon and there are so
many games to be played. As long
as we can just keep ourselves in
the mix and pick up as many points
as we can, we will keep building
and see where we go.”
A TIME TO REMEMBER
TODAY’S GAME IS DEDICATED TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES DURING CONFLICTS
DOWN THE YEARS, THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED AND SACRIFICED FOR THEIR COUNTRY.
Before the game we shall hold a
minutes silence and lay a wreath
whilst during the game our players
will be wearing the shirt with the
poppy on as part of our act of
remembrance. These shirts will be
auctioned off to raise vital funds
for the Royal British Legion.
On an often-forgotten cenotaph on
Nelsons Square is a war memorial
to those who died in action serving
in the Bolton Artillery. On that
memorial is the name very dear
to us here at Bolton Wanderers,
Harry Goslin. Harry our Team
Captain of the time Harry was an
inspirational leader both on and off
the pitch and in 1939, in front of a
23,000 strong crowd at Burnden
Park, the 28-year-old skipper gave
a rousing speech before leading
his entire team to sign up at the
local Territorial Army drill hall. They
became known as the Wanderers
at War.
“We are facing a national
emergency,” he told them.
“But this danger can be met, if
everybody keeps a cool head,
and knows what to do. This is
something you can’t leave to the
other fellow, everybody has a
share to do.”
Harry lost his life in conflict and is a
real hero of our Club, our Town and
our Country.
Today we have many guests with
us who will form a guard of honour
on the pitch as the players enter
the field. Amongst these guests
are those that have served our
country in more recent conflicts,
along with family representatives of
some who lost their lives and were
Bolton Wanderers fans.
These include, Julie Hall, founder
of the Darren Deady foundation
in memory of her son Kingsman
Darren Deady, who died from
wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
Three troops representing the
Royal Artillery and Corporal Harry
Goslin, including SSgt Mark Talbot
(Staff Sergeant),
Five troops representing the
Duke of Lancasters and Kingsman
Darren Deady including Sgt
Justin Singleton (Sergeant) who
is the manager of the Lee Rigby
Football Team, who play charity
matches to raise funds for The Lee
Rigby Foundation. Most recently
playing against The Darren
Deady Foundation at Daisy Hill
FC, to raise vital funds for both
foundations, to carry out work in
their communities. This will now
become an annual fixture.
We also have with us today
Corporal Louis Murray, REME
who drove the custom-built Land
Rover hearse for The Duke of
Edinburgh’s funeral and was
awarded the Queen Victoria Medal
by the late HM Queen Elizabeth II.
He also stood guard at the late HM
Queen Elizabeth II state funeral.
It is important that during this time
we all wear our poppy with pride
and join together to remember all
those who have lost their lives in
conflict and those that have served
their country. We are one club, one
community, one town.
Enjoy the game.
MEMORABLE MATCHES
SEASON 2022/23 MARKS THE 25TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
BOLTON STADIUM.
Saturday 12th January 2002
Barclaycard FA Premiership
Bolton Wanderers 2
Chelsea 2
For the third match in a row the
Wanderers came from behind to
rescue a point. Missed chances
and defensive errors conspiring
to put them behind twice in a
game which illustrated the fine line
between success and failure in the
Premiership.
After a lackluster first half former
Wanderer Eidur Gudjohnsen
fired Chelsea ahead. Their lead
was to last just two minutes,
Michael Ricketts dancing round
‘keeper Carlo Cudicini to level
matters as he emerged as a
genuine contender for England
honours, but, in the 65th minute
the Londoners regained the lead
through Mikael Forssell.
Eleven minutes from time along
came another equaliser for Bolton.
Fredi Bobic, making his debut,
challenged for the ball and it fell
for Kevin Nolan to send a shot that
deflected off Marcel Desailly and
beyond Cudicini.
In a nailbiting finish Simon Charlton
was on hand to clear a John Terry
effort off his own line to earn the
point that gave Bolton a three
points cushion from the drop zone.
Fredi Bobic became the first
Bolton player in 39 years to
score a top flight hat trick as the
Wanderers demolished Ipswich
with a scintillating first half display.
Not since Freddie Hill netted all
three in a 3-2 victory over Sheffield
United at Burnden Park in March
1963 had a Wanderer claimed the
matchball at that level.
The German managed the feat
in 38 minutes with a devastating
display of finishing to all but secure
Bolton’s Premier League safety
and virtually condemn Ipswich to
the drop. Youri Djorkaeff also got
into the act when Bobic combined
with Rod Wallace to set up a simple
finish for the Frenchman after 35
minutes.
The second half was a non-event
compared to the first but that was
down to Wanderers successfully
shutting up shop and frustrating
Ipswich at every turn until the final
minute when Jamie Clapham finally
got lucky and fired in a consolation.
The Wanderers hauled themselves
out of the bottom three for the first
time in three months in a thrilling
clash that saw them hang on for
victory after having a three goal
cushion.
It was a blistering start, Jay Jay
Okocha smashing Bolton ahead
with a shot from the edge of the
area that found the top corner after
just five minutes, Alan Shearer
levelling matters just three minutes
later.
In the ninth minute Ricardo
Gardner found the same top corner
from a thirty yard free kick.
On the stroke of half time Michael
Ricketts made it 3-1 when he rose
to get above Andy O’Brien to plant
his header from Per Frandsen’s
cross out of Shay Given’s reach.
In the 63rd minute Ricketts took
advantage of a poor backpass by
Gary Speed to increase the lead.
Shola Ameobi reduced the arrears
for the Magpies and then,in the
79th minute, a blistering free
kick from Shearer brought them
within one goal to make it an
Dapo Afolayan went closest for
Kieran Lee was denied by the
NEXT TRUST MEETING WITH
CLUB – last call for anyone to raise
any items for discussion with the
club at our scheduled meeting next
week. Trust members and affiliate
groups should get in touch on
enquiries@bwfcst.co.uk with any
questions you may wish us to raise.
DISABLED FACILITIES WORKING
GROUP – the working group is
in the process of consulting and
surveying the BWDSA members
ahead of the next group meeting
with the club, with the LPF Audit
still awaited. Work in progress!
AFFILIATES UPDATE – we now
have a new affiliate on board
from Nigeria and we will be
posting more detail of Remi and
his group on our website in the
near future. Please contact Martin
on enquiries@bwfcst.co.uk for
further information about affiliate
membership.
Today we welcome our affiliates,
BWSCN, from Norway. One of their
members, Glenn, recently visited
us on his bucket-list trip, but today
we welcome Eirik and some of his
fellow BWSCN members in their
first visit for a few years due to
covid. Here are a few words from
our friends from Norway:
“It all started when two of our
current board members attended a
pre-season friendly game between
Larvik Turn and Bolton Wanderers
(3-3) in 1956, the only time Bolton
Wanderers has played in Norway. A
few years later, these two members
and a few others founded Bolton
Wanderers Supporters Club
Norway in Larvik in 1995. We now
have approximately 150 members,
located across Norway. We are
a member of the Norwegian
Supporter Union for British Football
(SBF), along with 53 other British
supporters clubs and 130,000
members. The SBF arranges a
yearly football tournament and
this year we won the bronze
medal - for a small club like ours
that is huge! We regularly publish
our own Trotters magazine, all in
Norwegian! Our website is www.
bwscn.no where you can find
everything you need to know
about BWSCN. Membership of
BWFCST is a fantastic channel to
stay in close contact with Bolton
Wanderers. Have a good match
and if you spot any Norwegians
just go and say hello! Contact us at
thirty years now participating in
both the Goldline and Lifeline
tried to help them with their fund
It was Clifford’s son who gave
him the good news of his win
on their arrival at Forest Green
for Saturdays match, “At first he
thought he had won!” Clifford
remarked.
On finding out it was actually
his winnings Clifford said, “I
was highly delighted to receive
the news of my winnings and
plan to spend the money on a
winter break to Tenerife.”
Finally, Clifford said of the
weekly fundraisers, “I would
highly recommend the Goldline
and Lifeline weekly fundraisers,
not only have you a chance of
winning great cash prizes like
me, but you are also helping the
club with all their development
projects.”
Congratulations Clifford from
everyone here at the BWDA, your
‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
ON THE COVER
Due to this weekend’s
fixture being our designated
Remembrance Fixture, we
have dedicated the cover to all
those who have lost their lives
in conflict throughout the years.
They will never be forgotten.
Inside the issue, you will still
find the usual image of a current
Wanderers player in a home
jersey that has been worn
during the time since the club
moved to its current home in
1997 - to commemorate the 25th
anniversary of the stadium. Kyle
Dempsey is pictured wearing
the 2012/13 shirt manufactured
by Adidas - featuring the poppy.
