5. Make up some great Halloween party ideas to make the most of this holiday.

a 750bc the Celtics celebrated Samhain, one of their most important holidays on November
1st. It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The night before,
the Celts believed the people who died in the past year came back to haunt people and
damage property. The Celtic priests built bonfires to combat the spirits. The people
gathered round the fires wearing costumes of animals to scare them away and tell each
other’s fortunes.
750 jaar voor Christus vierden de Kelten Samhain, een van hun belangrijkste feesten,
op 1 November. Hiermee was het oogstseizoen voorbij en begon de winter. De avond
ervoor (31 oktober) geloofden de Kelten dat de geesten van overledenen mensen
lastig kwamen vallen en schade veroorzaakten. De priesters staken grote vuren aan om
de geesten op afstand te houden en de mensen trokken kostuums van dieren aan om de
geesten te misleiden. Ze voorspelden elkaar de toekomst.

The Romans mixed two of their own holidays with the Celtic holiday. One was Feralia
(a celebration of the dead) and the other Pomona (celebration of the Goddes of fruit
and vegetables; possibly the origin to the tradition of ‘bobbing for apples’).
De Romeinen combineerden twee van hun eigen feesten met Samhain. De ene was
Feralia (een feest ter ere van de doden) en de andere ter ere van Pomona, de godin van
fruit en groenten. Hier is wellicht de oorzaak te vinden van het ‘appel-happen’, een traditie
die bij Halloween hoort.

The Catholic Church established a festival called All Saint’s Day on November 1st, also
called. All Hallows or All-hallowmas. The night before came to be known as All Hallow’s
Eve, or Hallowe’en. European immigrants took the traditional holiday with them when they
went to America in the early 19th century.
De Katholieke kerk stelde een feest in op 1 november, genaamd Allerheiligen. De avond
ervoor werd All Hallow’s Eve, of Hallowe’en genoemd. De mensen die vanuit Europa naar
Amerika trokken, namen de traditie mee.

In the last part of the 19th century the US tried to change the holiday, but this failed.
People liked dressing up, eating food and trick or treating.
In het laatste deel van de 19e eeuw werd er een poging gedaan om Halloween te
veranderen in een feest over samenzijn, maar dit mislukte. Mensen vonden het veel te leuk
om zich te verkleden en langs de deuren te gaan om snoep te verzamelen en een grap uit
te halen bij mensen die geen snoep geven (trick or treat!).
