ANGLING BENEFITS PROMOTED
BY EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Recreational fishing can
contribute much to the
sustainability of Europe’s
habitats, fish stocks, coastal
economy and individual health
and wellbeing.
That’s the view of the
European Parliament, which
has promoted the sport in a
landmark report looking on
the ‘Blue Economy’, which
supports economic growth, social
inclusion and the preservation
or improvement of livelihoods
while at the same time ensuring
environmental sustainability of
the oceans and coastal areas.
It is seen as a crucial move
after years of lobbying by angling
groups throughout the continent
to ensure those at the highest
level not only understood the
benefits the sport brings in many
areas but also actively promoted
it.
The European Parliament
Resolution toward a sustainable
‘Blue Economy’ in the EU
recognised its importance from
economic, tourist, habitat and
wellbeing perspectives, among
others.
A spokesman for the European
Fishing Tackle Trade Association
(EFTTA), which did much
lobbying on behalf of the sport,
said: “EFTTA engaged much
in the preparation of the text
to secure that recreational
angling was not overlooked but
mentioned and praised for all the
positive benefits it has on offer.
We are happy to see our efforts
have paid off !
“The resolution makes it very
clear that recreational angling
is a big asset to the coastal
communities. It is stressed that
angling can, and does, help
coastal communities to generate
income and jobs as a high-value
and sustainable tourism activity.
“We can add to that, that
angling tourism also can extend
the tourism season beyond the
traditional summer beach season.”
Among the key paragraphs
of the resolution were an
acknowledgement that
the recreational fisheries
sector can contribute to the
diversification of coastal
communities’ income as a highvalue
and sustainable tourism
activity.
It also recognised angling
tourism could be a new source of
income for coastal communities
while ensuring the sustainability
and good status of fish stocks
and providing social and health
benefits and noted how it looked
set to continue growing following
increased interest during the
Covid-19 pandemic.
The socio-economic value of
fishing and its contribution to a
sustainable blue economy in the
EU was also highlighted and it
called for more and better data
about recreational fisheries and
all of its benefits from the EU
commission and member states
alike.
It also encouraged member
states to build on best practices
as outlined by the European
Maritime, Fisheries and
Aquaculture Fund to develop and
fund fisheries tourism projects,
include sustainable maritime,
island and coastal tourism in
related actions and programmes,
support initiatives that encourage
the diversification tourism and
to make tourist activities and
employment less seasonal.
The report also urged members
to recognise the contribution
made by sea fishing and to tackle
the impact that bottom-contact
commercial fishing gear, drift nets
and fish aggregating devices have
on fish populations.
FLYING
INTO
BATTLE?
The announcement by the American
Sportfishing Association that
ICAST 2023 will feature more fly
fishing than ever before was perhaps not
that much of a surprise.
Until a few years back, the International
Fly Tackle Dealer event had been all but
rolled into ICAST anyway, although it
did break away on its own once again just
before Covid-19 hit.
But IFTD’s return after the pandemic,
in Salt Lake City back in March, was met
with a mixed reaction and it seems the
American Fly Fishing Trade Association,
which ran it, is not keen to repeat the same
experience.
That said, there WILL be something
independent for fly tackle brands and
retailers to get their teeth into – it’s just
not clear exactly what at present.
So does the decision by the ASA put the
two US-based tackle trade associations –
sportfishing and fly – at loggerheads?
It’s difficult to say, as neither party was
keen to discuss the other one with TTW
in recent conversations.
However, in my humble opinion, there
is room for both. A number of bigname
brands like Simms and Costa have
habitually done the two shows and the
events, I feel, can complement each other.
Whatever the ‘new’ AFFTA event looks
like, it is unlikely to be a ‘trade show’ in the
traditional sense that we all remember.
But fly fishing is a unique sport –
enjoyed on every continent and with a
very specific clientele and truly specialist
dealers. It deserves its own dedicated
showcase, in some shape or form, that is
3,511
6,466
for sure.
At the same time, ICAST attracts a huge
number of retailers, distributors, buyers
and media to its July Orlando event and
few would begrudge exhibitors the wealth
of engagement opportunities it presents to
the wider market.
Tackle Trade World has been fortunate
to have attended both events over the
past two decades and supported both
organisations and that will continue,
whatever happens in the future.
We are excited to see what AFFTA
brings next year as an alternative to IFTD
and you can be sure we will give it our
backing and be happy to help promote the
products and services of those attending
any such event.
At the same time, an even bigger and
more expansive ICAST is also an enticing
prospect – being able to do business with
even more brands in one place makes
perfect sense, especially for this UK-based
editor.
All of our trade associations – wherever
you are in the world – do great work
promoting and protecting our sport and
the resulting events will always bring you
new contacts and business if you put the
time and effort in.
I understand that some will wish to save
their pennies and cents but I genuinely
believe this to be false economy.
Support your trade bodies and go to
their shows – for everyone’s benefit!
ICAST 2023 will expand fly fishing
offering
Plans have been unveiled to significantly
enhance the fly fishing sector at ICAST
2023, the largest tackle trade show in the
world.
As the overall recreational fishing
industry continues to evolve domestically
and internationally, organising body the
American Sportfishing Association sees this
as the perfect opportunity for companies
related to fly fishing to expand their reach in
the general market.
TTW is aware of discussions around
the future of the International Fly Tackle
Dealers’ (IFTD) Show, which only returned
earlier this year, in Salt Lake city, USA.
The American Fly Fishing Trade
Association, which runs the IFTD
event, had no comment to make on the
announcement.
Meanwhile, Blake Swango, ASA’s vicepresident
of trade show and membership,
explained: “Our goal is to represent the
entire recreational fishing community and fly
fishing plays a key role in reaching a specific
audience of anglers. Most issues related to
access, clean water and abundant fisheries
overlap both conventional and fly fishing
with ASA providing a powerful voice that is
heard and respected by the administration,
on Capitol Hill and around the country.
“Introducing fly fishing as a main
St Croix showcases Rift in rods
US rod maker St Croix has
released a series of boat and
jigging rods designed to make
life more comfortable for those
fishing big lures for large fish.
There are 28 rods in all – 16
boat models titled Rift Salt
and 12 Rift Jig offerings –
produced as a direct response
to nearshore saltwater anglers
demanding thinner and lighter
tools which still retain strength
and durability.
The feeling is that, when
using heavy hardware, angling
stamina can wear down to
the point where presentations
become sloppy and less
effective, or – even worse –
lead to fishing days ending
prematurely.
The Rift Salt range
consist of 16 thin and
category at ICAST 2023, specifically in
the New Product Showcase, is yet another
benefit ASA is providing to support the
enhancement and expansion of the sale of all
types of recreational fishing products.”
New Product Showcase categories will
now include fly rods, reels, waders and
boots, lines, leaders, tippets and accessories,
packs and luggage and technical apparel and
accessories, with the winners announced
during the Chairman’s Industry Awards
Reception.
ICAST Fly Fishing will be located on
prime exhibit space on the main 20ft aisle
reserved for fly fishing specific exhibitors.
In addition, the traditional ICASTing Pond
will be side-by-side with the FLYCASTing
Pond, next to the New Product Showcase.
Also new for 2023 will be the addition of
powerful conventional and
spinning models that form
a comprehensive, stand-up
toolkit for nearshore anglers
casting for strong-willed fish on
15 to 120lb line.
Ranging from 6ft 6in to 7ft
10in long with medium-light
through heavy power and fast
or moderate-fast parabolic
actions, the expansive line up
covers the gamut from pitching
swimming crabs to permit,
cobia or tarpon to presenting
large poppers and metal-lip
swimmers to tuna, AJs or cow
stripers.
Specifically engineered to
help mitigate the physical
stresses associated with vertical
techniques, the strong and slim
Rift Jig rods are conceived as an
extension of the angler’s body.
Consisting of 12
conventional and spinning
models from 5ft 6in to 6ft
6in with moderate, parabolic
actions and medium through
extra-extra heavy powers, these
are tip-tuned and beefed-up
in the butt, each optimised for
battling fish in specific weight
classes.
both non-motorised and motorised boating
accessories to the showcase category list
and an expansion of the technical apparel
categories to include women and men,
providing more choices for these well
populated fields.
Blake added: “As a trade association, ASA
offers a suite of benefits for its members
that will help any fishing business be
more successful and prepared to handle
the turbulent years ahead. Our intelligent
and connected Government Affairs team
has a direct impact on fishing access and
conservation issues. No other organisation
has had as great an impact on recreational
fishing than the American Sportfishing
Association.”
flyfishing@asafishing.org
Designed to bend where
they should and never where
they shouldn’t, the result is
a jig rod that works harder
than the angler, delivering fun
fishability without compromise
to maximum lifting power and
durability.
for decades and Fuji Japan has
agreed to honour all exclusivity
agreements, going forward,
advertising, in-store displays, product packaging
and other marketing efforts throughout 2023.
Fly Fishing Show organiser Ben Furimsky
said: “Our goal is to recognise the hard work
of all manufacturers and service providers who
continually seek innovative ways to improve the
variety of products and services offered to fly
fishing enthusiasts.
“What makes the Consumer Choice Awards
Patagonia founder gives the
company away
Almost 50 years since Patagonia founder
Yvon Chouinard began his experiment in
responsible business, he and his family have
transferred ownership to two trusts working
to enhance the planet.
Patagonia Purpose Trust now owns all
the voting stock and will work to help
demonstrate, as a for-profit business, that
capitalism can work for the Earth.
Meanwhile, the Holdfast Collective owns
all the non-voting stock and will use every
dollar received from Patagonia to protect
nature and biodiversity, support thriving
communities and fight the environmental
crisis.
Each year, profits that are not reinvested
back into the business will be distributed
by Patagonia as a dividend to the Holdfast
Collective to help fight the climate crisis.
The company projects that it will pay out an
annual dividend of roughly $100 million,
depending on the health of the business.
Yvon said: “It’s been a half-century since
we began our experiment in responsible
business. If we have any hope of a thriving
planet 50 years from now, it demands all
of us doing all we can with the resources
we have. As the business leader I never
wanted to be, I am doing my part. Instead
of extracting value from nature and
transforming it into wealth, we are using
the wealth Patagonia creates to protect
the source. We’re making Earth our only
shareholder. I am dead serious about saving
this planet.”
Patagonia will continue to give one per
cent of sales each year to grassroots activists
and the business also confirmed that its
leadership team will not change.
Ryan Gellert will continue to serve
as CEO and the Chouinard family will
continue to sit on Patagonia’s board, along
with Kris Tompkins, Dan Emmett, Dr Ayana
Elizabeth Johnson and Charles Conn (chair).
Ryan Gellert added: “Two years ago,
the Chouinard family challenged a few
of us to develop a new structure with two
central goals to both protect the purpose
of the business and immediately and
perpetually release more funding to fight the
environmental crisis.
“We believe this new structure delivers on
both and we hope it will inspire a new way
of doing business that puts people and planet
first.”
Bajío’s Temples of Change
Bajío, maker of blue-light
filtering, sustainably-made,
performance sunglasses
built to save the world’s
saltwater flats and estuaries,
is proud to announce a
new partnership in their
sustainability journey.
It has teamed up with
Oceanus, AC, a non-profit
organisation based in
Quintana Roo, Mexico that
develops projects for the
conservation of coral reefs,
and artist Piper Nunn, to
help save the coral reefs of
Xcalak, Mexico, one coral at
a time.
With every purchase of
the Nato Permit Tail or
Balam Coral Reef frames
from Bajío’s newly launched
Temples of Change
collection, a $20 donation is
made to Oceanus and one
coral colony is planted and
UK sea and lure tackle manufacturer and
distributor TronixFishing has appointed
well-known industry face Karl Murphy as
area sales representative for north England.
Karl brings with him an enormous wealth
of experience and knowledge, having worked
in the trade and the area for over 20 years.
George Cunningham, managing director
of TronixFishing, said: “[This] is an area
where we have always lacked a sales presence.
From our early days working with agents,
we never really felt that we were properly
represented in the north of the country.
“I am very happy that we are now able to
add an experienced, keen, personable rep in
Karl to our growing sales force. Having the
stability of regular visits and a local point
of contact will hopefully give our accounts
the confidence to develop the range of our
products they stock.
“I am personally relishing the opportunity
of working alongside somebody with Karl’s
pedigree and helping to facilitate the next
stage of our growth as a company.”
Karl added: “I’m excited to join a fastgrowing,
agile company.
The depth of product
available is a real credit
to the way George has
built his business. I’m
looking forward to
working with the team
and to visit the many
shops to show them
some of the fantastic
products across all of the brands available.”
The territory covers Herefordshire,
Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire
and Lincolnshire plus the whole of England
above this to the Scottish border.
Meanwhile TronixFishing’s marketing
manager, Mike Thrussell Jnr, noted: “It is
a hugely significant area within sea and
lure fishing with tremendous potential for
growth. We feel our product range is an ideal
match for the coastal and inland shops in
this key area and we’re looking forward to
showcasing our products to them.”
karl@tronixpro.com
by Oceanus and
includes the
construction of
coral nurseries and
the transplantation
of thousands of
colonies a year.
“In Xcalak,
The Great Mayan
Reef is only a few
hundred yards
from the beach
and is a critical
part of the habitat we fish.
“A healthy reef means a
healthy fish population, so
we want to do our part to
protect and renew it,” said
Al Perkinson, founder of
Bajío Sunglasses.
“Without healthy coral
reefs, fish lose their habitat,”
explained Piper Nunn, who
is an artist and fisheries
biologist.
“These coral designs help
keep ocean conservation
top of mind while taking
tangible action to restore our
coral reefs.”
Nunn has painted two
ocean-inspired designs for
Bajío’s Temples of Change
campaign. One is a fishfocused
design featuring
repeating permit tails on
the inside arms of the
Nato frame and the other
a habitat-focused design
featuring beautiful sea fan
coral for the women’s Balam
frame.
Nunn hopes to continue
to create more art with a
purpose for Bajío in the
future.
Yamaha empowers the Sea Angling Classic
Following the huge success of the inaugural
Sea Angling Classic in the UK this summer,
it looks set for expansion for 2023, starting
with a major partnership with engine
manufacturer Yamaha Marine UK.
The top prize in the recreational boat
angling category next June will be a fully
equipped Extreme 745 Game King boat,
(and trailer), powered by a 300hp V6
Yamaha outboard engine, complete with
Yamaha Joystick Helm Master EX control.
Not only will this get anglers to the
fishing areas very quickly, it means that
when they arrive they can use the GPS
anchor locking system through the Helm
Master EX, enabling them to fish in snaggy
areas where the fish are with no fear of
getting an anchor stuck.
Matt Taylerson, Yamaha’s divisional
manager, marketing, said: “We are delighted
to partner with the Sea Angling Classic in
2023. Along with our boat partner, Extreme
Boats, we look forward to demonstrating
how our outboard engines lead the market
for performance and reliability, whilst our
innovative and integrated boat control
system, the Helm Master EX, provides
anglers with a whole new level of boat
control with its Autopilot functions.
“The way the Sea Angling Classic
continues to promote UK angling in a
responsible manner is something we are
particularly impressed with. The shore
clean-up programme, a prerequisite for
entry to the competition for participants,
complements our European wide Yamaha
initiative, Clean The Sea.
“The initiative demonstrates Yamaha’s
commitment towards preventing the danger
to our planet and motivates communities
and users to do the same. This is a natural
tie for both of us, and we are excited to work
together in the future.”
Ross Honey, managing director of
Angling Spirit and event founder, added:
“Extreme Boats EU, who are providing
the prize boat for the Sea Angling Classic
2023, has signed an exclusive agreement
with Yamaha and will be rigging all boats
sold in Europe during 2023 with Yamaha
Ma Taylerson from Yamaha and Sea
Angling Classic founder Ross Honey at
the 2023 event launch.
engines. So, there was a natural, logical link
for Yamaha to be the official engine partner
of our event.
“It’s really great that so many of the
activities and initiatives linked to the Sea
Angling Classic’s best practice catch photo
release angling event, such as respect for
the environment and children’s education,
directly mirror those of Yamaha.
“So, let’s raise a glass to passion and
performance and welcome Yamaha on
board.”
FEATURE
Wynd
PUTTING THE ‘WYND’
UP FLY BOX MAKERS
Wynd Tackle might be a relatively new name on the fly scene but its Bynder boxes have
been taking the industry by storm, so TTW caught up with the brand’s Josh Kelly to find
out more…
TTW: WHY AND WHEN DID THE BRAND
START?
JOSH KELLY: Wynd actually started back
in 2015. We used to spend a lot of time
trolling for salmon in Lake Michigan,
where saw the need for a better way to
store salmon flies trolled behind flashers.
So we designed and patented a modular
storage system that works great for
offshore trolling lures and flies rigged with
leader. That’s really how it all started but,
shortly after, we started fly fishing… and
completely changed direction!
Well, maybe not completely but we
made a hard turn. We again saw the need
for a better way to store rigged flies. So we
designed our Bynder dropper rig fly box.
We wanted a box that not only stores your
flies but also utilises a removable “rig card”
for storage and securing of dropper rigs.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BYNDER
BOXES UNIQUE?
It’s very lightweight and simple. The
removable rig card allows for easy
customisation and gives a fly angler a spot
to secure flies rigged with tippet. Pre-rig
them before you go out to be ready, to save
time and to tie less knots. Or have a spot
to put a rig when you are in the heat of
the moment and want to change it all up.
Keep that rig tangle-free and organised on
the Bynder’s rig card and fish on without
wasting time.
YOU’VE NOT BEEN GOING THAT
LONG. HOW HAS THE JOURNEY
BEEN SO FAR?
Starting a fishing product company is hard.
If it were easy, everyone would do it, right?
There have been many times where we have
had no idea what we are doing or what way
we should go.
It’s those times where we have learnt
the most and can look back and say “we
are glad we did that” or “let’s never do that
again.”
One thing that was certainly a good
move was going out to IFTD in Salt Lake
City. We won “Best of Show” in the tackle
box/storage system category. That was an
extremely proud moment for us and could
not have happened at a better time.
We were a little uncertain about moving
forward and it proved that we need to hold
our course and that we have good products
that can help anglers be more productive
on the water.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE REACTION
FROM RETAILERS AND ANGLERS
TO YOUR PRODUCTS?
It’s been good! Especially after IFTD
and having the opportunity to showcase
our current product and products we plan
to launch in the future. We met a lot of
different people in the industry and the
feedback has been great!
ANYTHING ELSE IN
DEVELOPMENT?
Yes, we are going to continue to improve
our Bynder fly box and plan to release a
Gen 2 model. We also plan on being able
to provide many different options of our
removable rig/fly cards with different hook
insertion patterns to accommodate other
patterns of flies, even streamers. With
those being removable we are working on
designs of different products to swap them
in and out of.
One is a simple lanyard type product
that an angler can hang from their vest
or pack. The other is more of a “filing”
type box that can store many rig/fly cards,
with one on the lid so that you have an
accessible spot to secure flies when fishing
from a drift boat.
That’s just a few of the many things we
are working on. It’s all exciting and very
different stuff that we cannot wait to be
able to provide to all of our fellow anglers
out there!
FLY TYING
SPOTLIGHT ON
FLY TYING
What could be more
satisfying than catching
a fish on a fly you have
tied yourself, and what
a box of delights is
the world of fly tying
materials.
Soft fur and bright feathers, shiny tinsel,
wires, hooks, chenilles, threads of all
colours of the rainbow and more…
for many fly fishermen almost the greatest
pleasure comes when sitting at a vice with their
fly tying tools, armed with a huge range of fly
tying materials and their imagination, because
fly tying offers benefits that cannot be achieved
through purchasing ready tied flies.
It’s one thing to tie an established pattern
of fly because you know it works, but when an
angler ties their own fly they create the pattern,
size, colour and style. Catching a fish on a fly
tied by a professional, anyone can do that, but
when it’s your own product in the mouth of
that trout, the satisfaction is immense.
There are thousands of fly patterns in the
world but by tying the fly themselves tyers
can create something that can’t be found in a
local fly shop – they can let their imagination
run wild, often learning more about the
entomology of their local waters in the process.
Although without doubt it is easier and
more time efficient for anglers to go into the
local fly shop and ask which patterns work
best, then purchase a few perfectly tied flies
that will catch fish, most fly anglers reach a
point in their fishing when they think about
tying their own flies.
Tying flies enables an angler to not only
replicate the exact insects found in the streams
or lakes they fish that the trout just love to
eat, but also create their own custom patterns
no one else has. Looking at some flies tied
by expert tyers makes you wonder if you’re
looking at the real thing.
Fly tying also caters for those on the artistic
side of fly fishing. Fully dressed Atlantic
salmon flies, for instance, can be classed as art
just as much as painting.
Getting into fly tying can seem daunting as
there are plenty of different tools and untold
numbers of materials out there. Fortunately,
there are starter kits available with the basic
tools anglers need to tie most flies. After
the initial purchase of basic tools and starter
materials however, Pandora’s box has been
opened and tyers will want ever more different
materials, advanced tools and more.
Some of the essential items that new
tyers will want to buy, and you need to stock,
include:
VICE
The vice is the most essential tool on a
tying desk. It firmly holds the hook while
you wind thread and other materials
around it.
SCISSORS
Sharp scissors are the most utilised hand
tool on a fly tyer’s bench, used to cut
threads, hairs and many other materials
used in the process of tying a fly.
WHIP FINISHER
Every fly must be finished by tying off
the thread. The whip finisher provides an
easy, durable method to tie the knot that
finishes the fly.
BOBBIN
Flies are tied with a thread that winds
and locks materials around the hook. The
bobbin is the tool that holds thread and
is used to wind thread around the hook
shank.
HACKLE PLIERS
Many flies commonly use hackles or
feathers in fly tying, which can prove
difficult to manage. Hackle pliers are a
great solution, providing a tight grip on
the feather’s stem, a difficult feat for fingers
alone.
BODKIN NEEDLE
The bodkin needle is the Swiss army knife
of tying tools. From picking out dubbing
to applying types of cement and glues, it’s
useful anywhere you need a fine point.
MATERIALS
These include various materials such
as chenille, hooks specific to the style
of fishing and pattern of fly, plus furs,
feathers, beads, eyes, cones and heads,
capes, flat braids, fly tying wires, shellbacks
and wools, flashabou type materials and
tinsels – it’s a long list that just keeps
on getting longer… take a look at our
selection over the next couple of pages.
LARVA LACE FIRE STAR DUBBING
Other brands have attempted to duplicate
the one and only Fire Star dubbing, but
none have matched the original superfine
pearlescent material used to create flies
that catch fish. Whether dubbed on to
thread, spun in a dubbing loop, or captured
with a pinch wrap, Fire Star adds a sparkle
and iridescence to flies that makes them
irresistible to saltwater and freshwater
finned quarry. This durable synthetic
dubbing can be used all on its own or
mixed with other materials offering endless
bounds to the fly tyer’s imagination and
with 44 colours to choose from it can fill
nearly any fly tying need – dry flies, nymphs,
streamers, and salmon flies, for cold-water
and warm-water species alike.
MUSTAD
HERITAGE FLY HOOK RANGE
As the foundation of a fly, it’s crucial that
Heritage Fly Hooks offer the latest hook
technologies. That’s why they have been
perfected with Mustad’s sharpest, slimmest
point yet, ALPHAPOINT, using the same
Opti-Angle sharping as ULTRAPOINT but
with improved penetration and sharpness.
The new TitanX and Titan Steel finishes
have a sleek, gun-metal look, and both
coatings are over 50 per cent more rustresistant
than previous coatings used on
Mustad fly hooks. The differences between
the finishes lie in the extra matte look of
TitanX and slight lustre found on Titan Steel
finished hooks.
These new hooks come in bio-based
plastic packaging, a durable, reusable
box made of Polylactic acid (PLA) plastic,
which is 100 per cent biodegradable and
compostable under certain conditions.
the Larva Lace shelves is Angel Hair. It
inside a plastic tube or hanging from your
favourite hank storage device. It can be
used exclusively to compose an entire
to bring life to specific fly sections, or to
brighten up smaller nymph rigs. Whether
you go with the regular Angel Hair, its
flashier sister material in Saltwater Angel
Hair, the UV varieties, or the shimmering
and shiny Angel Flash, you’ll be adding an
irresistible element to any fly pattern. With
so much variety and flexibility, it makes
WAPSI FLY
AWESOME POSSUM ZONKERS
Wapsi introduced the first stripped rabbit
zonkers many years ago. Dan Byford was
one of the first fly tyers to embrace the
material and his creation, the Zonker,
became an instant classic.
While rabbit zonkers make fantastic
streamers there are times when a longer,
stiffer zonker strip is an advantage; saltwater
and bass flies come to mind. Enter the
Awesome Possum Zonkers – zonker strips
made of soft tanned, stripped possum hides.
These zonkers are outstanding for large
flies because the hair averages over one
inch in length with a density similar to
rabbit strips. The stiffer hair makes the strip
less likely to wrap around the bend of the
hook during the cast. The subtle black tips
also give a two-toned look adding visual
appeal to the fly.
FEATURE
EFTTEX
WHY YOU SHOULD
BE AT EFTTEX 2023
After several years of cancellations forced by Covid-19, the European Fishing Tackle Trade
Exhibition (EFTTEX) is set to take place in Budapest from June 17th to 19th, 2023. One of the
organisers, István Pál, explain why it’s important and how to get involved.
TTW: FIRSTLY, ISTVAN, IT WAS SAD TO
LEARN THAT EFTTEX 2022 HAD TO BE
CANCELLED BUT SOME OF THE BOARD
MEMBERS HAD A GREAT REPLACEMENT
IDEA, THE EFTTEX DIGITAL NEW PRODUCT
SHOWCASE.
ISTVÁN PÁL: That’s right! There were
actually three board members who worked
on the project together. Entries have
just closed but it is the only European
showcase of new products which has a
truly worldwide reach.
Entering the competition brings brand
26 www.tackletradeworld.com
awareness and shows that a company is
innovative and has something new to offer
the market.
WHY IS ALL THIS SO VITAL TO
COMPANIES, ESPECIALLY SMALLER ONES?
Taking a look around the world we see
larger companies taking a bigger slice of
the market year by year. That happens
with globalisation, we can’t stop it.
Family businesses, small and medium size
companies are represented in big numbers
in our trade and EFTTEX and the Best
New Product Showcase are a great chance
to make a small company visible and
connect to a global trade audience.
ENTRY INTO THE SHOWCASE IS A GREAT
WAY INTO EFTTEX 2023. WHY SHOULD
COMPANIES BE THERE?
EFTTEX attracts companies, visitors
and press members from the trade from
around the world. Every year, since 1982,
a large number of industry guests have
met in just three days.
EFTTEX is the first choice for
brands to launch their new products in
Europe and is the best option for any
size company with serious international
ambitions.
However, I accept that the event has
lost some of its sparkle, Covid-19 and
the resulting long break made the project
more and more difficult.
EFTTEX 2023 – in Budapest from
June 17th to 19th – has a great chance of
attracting more people than we have had
in the past.
The Best New Product Showcase
Digital Edition adds additional value
to the show. We wanted to encourage
exhibitors to return and new exhibitors
to come.
The market had changed a lot, so our
intention is for retailers to come here, see
the beautiful city of Budapest and also
enjoy the show.
I understand people will be concerned
about the war in Ukraine but Hungary is
a safe country and a long way from the
eastern part of Ukraine, where most of
the fighting is taking place. The show
is still over eight months away and,
hopefully, the situation will have changed
by then and the conflict will be over.
THE ‘GREEN’ MESSAGE IS BECOMING
MORE AND MORE IMPORTANT. HOW WILL
YOU ENCOURAGE THIS?
Participants in the showcase could describe
the eco-friendly elements of the product
they submit. A “green booster” will be
added to the points obtained from the jury,
depending on how essential components
and packaging materials are used.
We want companies to prove they care
about environment. I believe the trade
understands the message as more and more
products are flagged as ‘green’.
GETTING OUT ON
THE WATER
Anglers looking to cover more water are turning increasingly to boats and
other watercraft to keep catching, while businesses looking to cover more
markets should be doing the same…
More and more anglers are
leaving the banks behind
and heading out on to
the water to chase their
quarry, using a variety of watercraft and
accessories to do so.
Whether it’s a small motor boat, kayak,
SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard), float tube
or drift boat, this move afloat has opened
up a new – and potentially lucrative –
market for brands and retailers alike.
Not only does the shift to ‘on the
water’ give anglers a different perspective
on their favourite locations, it can also
open up new options, allowing access to
previously hard-to-reach places.
Placing a lure or bait in what was once
an inaccessible spot gives the angler
a greater chance at catching more or
possibly bigger fish.
Combining fishing IN the water with
being ON the water is also double the fun
for many, as it hits all those outdoor and
nature touchpoints that people have been
clamouring for since Covid-19 lockdowns
were first instituted.
Many countries have reported increased
numbers of anglers AND boaters in
the last couple of years, certainly since
pre-pandemic times, and now is the time
28 www.tackletradeworld.com
to make the most of these once-in-alifetime
opportunities.
But with these new markets unlocking,
inevitably there will be questions around
what to stock – after all, there are some
major brands in this sector, some bigticket
items and, crucially, watercraft
and some of their accessories demand
both significant space and additional
knowledge, in order to look after
prospective customers and close a sale.
But don’t let that put you off. A kayak
or small boat, displayed well and kitted
out with a wide range of accessories, will
be an enticing draw for customers and
will doubtless provide some notable addon
sales.
So what is out there and how do you
ensure your fair share of sales and profits?
From motorboats…

Getting out on the water
WATERCRAFT CATEGORIES
MOTOR BOATS
A whole industry in themselves, motor
boats encompass everything from small
river craft with a simple outboard to bass
boats that can be found on tournament
circuits across the US or the predator
fishing tours in Europe, for example.
Usually offering high speed (and
commanding high prices), these may not
be the first choice for many other than
tournament anglers but anyone buying
one of these will inevitably be forking
out for the latest in electronic navigation
and fishfinders, trolling motors, storage,
buoyancy aids and even clothing.
… to pedal powered kayaks…
… to kayaks and SUPs…
KAYAKS
A rapidly growing sector, kayaks offer
freedom and versatility, able to handle
light inshore days, rivers and lakes with
equal aplomb.
Their manoeuvrability and stability
“You’ll often get so
close to your fish that
they will literally
swim right beside
or even underneath
you…”
… to large inflatables.
mean they can also be easily customised
and kitted out with plenty of fish-finding
and fish-catching gear while also offering
single and two-person options.
SUPS
Single person – more often than not
– SUPs (Stand-Up Paddleboards) are
manoeuvrable, stable and, crucially,
extremely quiet, meaning anglers can get
up close to their chosen species with very
little disturbance, making ambush fishing
especially easy. Many also offer custom
options and accessory points – vital when
taking rods, nets and baits with you.
DRIFT BOATS
Essentially these are wide, flat-bottomed
craft with flared sides and a narrow, flat
bow and pointed stern.
Typically, they boast a rocker along an
arc from bow to stern along the bottom
of the boat to make it easy to manoeuvre,
especially if you are tackling rapids
or rougher water on your way to your
chosen, out-of-reach spot.
FLOAT TUBES / BELLY BOATS
Once almost exclusively the preserve of
fly anglers, other disciplines have also
discovered the stealthy attributes of the
float tube or belly boat – essentially an
inflatable ring which surrounds you,
enabling you to control your movement
with your legs.
Usually equipped with somewhere to
store your rod and net as well as a space
to tie your rigs or sort out leaders and
flies, they are a relatively inexpensive way
to explore wide expanses of water that
would have been unreachable from the
shore.
Thanks to the quiet and covert nature
of these craft, you’ll often get so close
to your fish that they will literally swim
right beside or even underneath you – a
very surreal experience.
ACCESSORIES
Where do we start? From outboards to
trolling motors, shallow water anchors to
mooring spikes, rod and net mounts to
fishfinders, navigation and location units,
aerators and live wells, specialist luggage
and so much more, there is a seemingly
endless list of potential add-ons you can
offer watercraft-buying customers, all
boosting your bottom-line profit.
Over the next few pages in this
special Watercraft and Accessories
supplement we’ll introduce you to
some of the brands and products
worth finding space for in your
outlet or adding to your online
inventory.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT
CRAFT
Helping your customers decide which craft is right for them is vital if you are to get them to
treat you as a trusted supplier. In this mini feature we look at kayaks and SUPs
To stand up or to sit down?
Sit on or sit in? Along with
budget, these are key questions
to ask your prospective
customers who are keen to explore this
new and exciting world of fishing on the
water.
Both kayaks and SUPs let you get right
into those nooks and crannies where
fish are most likely to feed but it’s also
challenging and fun – you’re just inches
from the water if you are sitting down,
while standing up on an SUP gives you
increased observation of the waterscape.
WHAT’S IN A KAYAK?
A kayak’s hull is the base layer but they
can vary from craft to craft, offering
a range of stability options, water
displacement and so on.
While you may think that kayaks
need paddles, this is not necessarily the
case. There are models on the market
nowadays that rely on pedal power
instead.
In fact, these are becoming more
popular as some users find them less
tiring, especially over long distances.
Of course, you’ll want to sell buyers
a spare paddle in case something goes
wrong with the pedal system but then it’s
always wise to carry a spare one anyway.
That all adds up as pedal-powered
kayaks can be considerably more
expensive than their paddle-powered
cousins.
Most kayak anglers prefer to sit on
top of their kayaks, as this allows for
unrestricted access to gear and also make
it easier to get out and wade if desired.
However, they can make for a wet ride,
which can be uncomfortable at best and
30 www.tackletradeworld.com
The Stand Up Paddleboard
downright risky if the water is very cold.
Sit-in kayaks are generally a better bet
for fishing since they boast large cockpits
for gear storage and access as well as
manoeuvrability while on the water.
WHAT SUP?
Arguably the most important part of
choosing a Stand Up Paddleboard is that
it must be extremely stable, especially if
being used to cast and fish from.
For this reason, bigger is generally
better. Wider boards are more stable but
you will trade off some manoeuvrability
in return.
The right fin setup also plays a part – a
2+1 configuration is recommended while
a rigid board will also ensure you focus on
fishing rather than balancing.
Many SUPs will have anchor points
for your gear so how many is a personal
choice – just remember that most SUPs
have a weight limit, which you would be
silly to ignore!
In terms of deckpads, a deeply stamped
deck will help traction but the smoother
one will feel more comfortable under foot
– it’s a personal choice once again.
While most SUPs come with a
paddle, these can be a bit hit or miss.
The more budget models often have
cheaper paddles so an upgrade for easier
movement and control could be the order
of the day – carbon fibre paddles offer
light weight and better pull through the
water, as a rule.
Next month we’ll look at more watercraft
options for your store.

For some of us, fishing isn’t just about how many or how
big—and it’s not about nailing the photo. It’s about the
landscape, the friendships, and those hard and hilarious
moments that fuel a lifetime of tailgate tales. It’s about the
adventure. NRS Fishing helps you catch it with rugged,
functional equipment and apparel built for fishing the
waters less traveled.
Chief marketing officer at
water-based equipment and
apparel provider NRS, Mark
Deming, was among those
celebrating a major milestone in the
company’s history as it marked 50 years
in business with a party that invited
staff, customers and the local community.
Alongside a free barbecue, live music,
building tours, film screenings and
special discounts for shoppers, the event
was an opportunity to assess the legacy
of founder Bill Parks and marvel at his
vision.
WHEN YOU CALL
NRS, YOU ALWAYS
GET THE OWNER!
As US kayak and boating firm NRS celebrates 50 years, Tackle Trade World finds out
how the employee-owned business went from garage start-up to a leading supplier
and why its customers and the local community are so important.
THE BIG INTERVIEW –
MARK DEMING
32 www.tackletradeworld.com

Mark Deming
TTW: HOW AND WHY WAS THE
COMPANY FOUNDED?
MARK DEMING: NRS was founded in
1972 by Bill Parks, an idealistic business
professor who wanted to show that his
ideas could work in the real world.
A passionate river runner, Bill knew
first-hand how difficult it was to source
equipment for rafting and kayaking. So,
using $2,000 of his personal savings, he
filled his garage with gear and typed up
the first NRS catalogue. Bill had a dream
of creating a different kind of company,
one that put people before profits, and that
value is still what drives us 50 years later.
HOW HAS IT GROWN AND DEVELOPED
OVER THE LAST FIVE DECADES?
From its early days as a garage start up
and mail order retailer, NRS has grown
to become the world’s leading provider of
equipment and apparel for human-powered
adventures on the water.
As the foremost provider of professionalgrade
inflatable watercraft for commercial
outfitters and guides, anglers have long
used NRS gear to access hard-to-reach
White-water rafting with NRS gear.
A raft of NRS staffers.
waters where conventional boats can’t go.
NRS has responded by developing
watercraft, life jackets, apparel and
accessories designed for the adventure
anglers pursuing fish off the beaten path.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN THE
INDUSTRY OVER THAT TIME, DO YOU
THINK?
Human-powered backcountry adventures
on the water were once a niche activity,
enjoyed by a few hearty and dedicated
souls. As easy-to-reach waters have become
increasingly crowded, more and more
people are venturing away from the roads,
and the crowds, seeking adventure, solitude,
nature – and great fishing!
The rugged, purpose-built gear for which
NRS has always been known is being
discovered by new generations of outdoor
enthusiasts who are going farther, working
harder, and expanding the boundaries of
the sport.
FIFTY YEARS IS A LONG TIME IN ANY
BUSINESS. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE
NRS’ LONGEVITY TO?
Bill founded NRS with a vision of treating
his customers the way he would like
to be treated and focused on providing
outstanding service.
As the company grew, he quickly learnt
that if he wanted NRS to be the kind of
company he would want to do business
with, it also needed to be the kind of
company he would want to work for. He
began to focus not only on caring for
NRS customers, but on caring for NRS
employees.
Valuing employees, not just as human
resources but as human beings, turned out
to be the “secret sauce” of NRS. In 2014,
Bill sold NRS to his employees, making
it one of the only 100 per cent employeeowned
businesses in the outdoor industry.
ARE THERE ANY STANDOUT PRODUCTS
OR BESTSELLERS THAT HAVE REALLY
HELPED NRS MAKE ITS MARK?
In the mid-1970s, Bill began
manufacturing products that he couldn’t
source from other providers. His initial
development effort, the NRS Bill’s Bag,
was the first purpose-built dry bag for
watersports and remains a bestseller nearly
50 years later.
His second product effort, the NRS
Strap, also became an iconic item that
is considered the industry standard and
remains extremely popular.
Later, NRS became known for its
expedition-quality inflatable boats, modular
rowing frames, technical apparel and life
jackets.
In the early 2000s, NRS introduced
the first fishing-specific life jacket, the
Chinook Fishing PFD, which has become
the world’s top-selling life jacket for
anglers.
WHAT IS NRS DOING TO SECURE ITS
FUTURE FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS?
As NRS enters its next chapter, we are
doubling down on the values that have
brought us to where we are today.
Business has a way of humbling
everyone – and NRS is no exception – but
in challenging times we always succeed
by returning to our core values, focusing
on customers and community, people and
the planet – and building the best possible
product.
Being 100 per cent employee-owned
is a huge strength for our company, as
our employees are literally invested in
the business and share responsibility for
delighting our customers with excellent
products and service. When you call NRS,
you always get the owner!
Aquaglide
WHY ANGLERS ARE
GETTING “PUMPED”
FOR INFLATABLES
Inflatable kayaks are one of the fastest growing sectors in the sport. Their quality and
performance has improved dramatically in recent years. Here are five reasons why they
are so popular.
PACKABILITY
For a start, inflatable kayaks are easier to
store as they, literally, fold up or squash
down, so you don’t need specialty roof racks
or a large garage space to transport and store
them.
For example, all Aquaglide kayaks come
with a backpack or duffel to easily carry
them from the boot or back seat of your car
to the water. You can even take them with
you as check-in luggage on flights, avoiding
overweight baggage fees.
Speaking of which, they’re lightweight
too – a plastic tandem could weigh between
70 and 100lb while Aquaglide’s Blackfoot
Angler 130 weighs in at just 41lb and the
Backwoods Angler 75 is only 9.6lb!
SAFETY
A major issue for all users is safety. It’s
tempting to think inflatables are less sturdy
than their plastic cousins but many feature
wide, flat bottoms while the side tubes act
as sponsons, making them incredibly stable
and difficult to flip over.
The open cockpit design makes for easier
re-entry from the water and into the boat
and, even if they are filled with water, they
34 www.tackletradeworld.com
are nearly unsinkable because they are
filled with air, meaning they are extremely
buoyant. Some models, like Aquaglide’s
Blackfoot 130 and 160, even boast dropstitch
floors with the added bonus of a
self-bailing option.
COMFORT
All anglers know they fish better when
they are comfortable but that’s easier said
and done in a kayak, where you are often
trying to do more than one thing at a
time.
Aquaglide knows this and paid special
attention to creating comfortable seating,
offering support with adjustable backrests
and breathable mesh to keep you on the
water for longer.
Its kayaks are built to be very stiff,
giving paddling performance similar to a
plastic model, while the shape and rocker
profile creates lift over chop, swells and
waves, ensuring a dryer ride and more
control in rough conditions.
Combining a great paddling experience
in a rigid kayak that is also soft and
forgiving makes it great for newcomers,
youngsters and even your dog!
DURABILITY
The latest high-tech materials and
construction like Aquaglide’s Duratex
reinforced PVC mean these kayaks are
extremely durable. Just like white-water
rafts, they will bounce off rocks and other
obstacles and, crucially, won’t dent, scratch
or crack like a plastic kayak might.
VERSATILITY
Since they can be stored almost anywhere
and are easy to transport, they are ideal,
whether you are a seasoned paddler or
just climbing into your first fishing kayak.
They can handle a variety of
conditions, with many offering a range
of seating positions to cater for different
users and loads; meaning you can take
different kit with you depending on your
quarry or plans. The various bungee
straps and accessory points augment that
further.
All Aquaglide tandem kayaks can also
be set up for paddling solo – now that is
true versatility.
Sea Eagle
SEA EAGLE’S
FISHSKIFF HAS
LANDED!
When you need a boat that is roomy, easy to set up and at home on the water no matter
what the season, then Sea Eagle Boats’ inflatable FishSkiff16 ticks all these boxes and
many more.
Sea Eagle Boats’ revolutionary,
patent pending, inflatable
FishSkiff16 is your year-round
fishing boat. This lightweight
fishing skiff has plenty of room for three
anglers and all their gear and is ready in
minutes for fishing lakes, bays, marshes,
anywhere there’s water.
Recently updated to be made
completely of double-layer, high-pressure,
all-drop-stitch, fusion technology, the
FishSkiff is lighter by 20lb and stronger
than the previous version. The fusion
welding process also makes it easier to
fold and pack up.
LIGHT BUT STABLE
At 16ft long and 54in wide, this boat has
maximum stability, plus it weighs in at only
92lb with the removable transom – that’s
much lighter than most fishing boats.
Because the three separate air chambers
of the FishSkiff are made completely of
drop-stitch material, the gunwales are low,
providing unprecedented access to the
water, which in turn makes it easier to land
fish, catch and release, not to mention the
ease with which you can re-enter the boat
36 www.tackletradeworld.com
from the water.
The patent pending drop-stitch
design also creates the long, elegant,
hydrodynamic shape that allows the
FishSkiff to reach speeds up to 18 mph
with two to three people and a whopping
21.5mph with one person, with just a 10hp
motor.
MADE FOR FISHING
Two built-in 40in fish rulers are
conveniently located on each tube so
you can make sure your catch is trophy
worthy... and legal, of course.
There are also Scotty mounting pads
on the bow and stern that accept rod
holders, anchor mounts and a multitude
of other Scotty accessories.
Add your own bow-mounted trolling
motor with the optional Sea Eagle bow
motor mount and easy to use mounting
system for even more fishing options.
The removable transom makes it
easy to fold the FishSkiff neatly and
compactly, so it can be stored in small
places.
The fuel efficient, lightweight, roll-out
and go FishSkiff holds up to three people
or 1,765lb. Yet, it folds down to just 60in
x 24in x 12in for easy transport in any
SUV, truck, camper or small plane.
Adding to its versatility further, the Sea
Eagle FishSkiff16 is available in no less
than 10 different packages.
Energofish
THE MAGIC OF THE
WIZARD REELS
Hungarian angler Peter Szebenyi has had the pleasure of testing and comparing two of
Energofish’s Wizard spinning reels – the MXT and the Edge. Did they work their magic
on him?
After studying the specifications
for each of the Wizard reels,
I started fishing with the size
4000, because this is the most
useful to me and the methods I use.
I started fishing with the MXT reel,
mainly because I was able to get my
hands on this type for the first time.
The appearance of the reel also
suggests that we have a reliable, longlasting
accessory in our hands, which
promises to be an excellent choice for
the complementary Wizard and other
spinning rods.
I had the opportunity to try it out for
several days, during which I used both
fast-moving surface lures and slowermoving
plastics.
Over the next few days, the Wizard
Edge reel came into my hands. As a result
of the Japanese design, these have proved
to be extremely precise, reliable and
durable reels, which stand their ground in
all conditions!
All sizes of the reels have an extremely
light, extra-solid graphite body, and they
are equipped with an extra lightweight
aluminium spool.
In addition to the turned aluminium
drum, the crank is also, naturally, metal
and the knob on0 the handle provides
an extremely comfortable grip, even
after hundreds of casts, which is a very
important factor for a spinning reel.
The 2000 size, by the way, is also a
perfect choice for fishing with extremely
thin braided lines and, even in the larger
sizes, it provides an alternative for thicker
braided lines if bigger predators are the
target.
I would say the design is recommended
for both beginners and experienced
spinning anglers alike, if the longevity
and durability, not to mention the amount
of features and level of sophistication of
the reels, is important.
INDONESIA
With 17,500 islands, Indonesia offers a lot of coast, a lot of
sea, a lot of fishing and plenty of tackle trade opportunities.
T
he country of Indonesia is an
archipelago located off the
coast of mainland southeast
Asia in the Indian and Pacific
oceans that lies across the
Equator and spans a distance
equivalent to one-eighth of
Earth’s circumference. Its
islands include Sumatra, Java,
the southern extent of Borneo,
Bali, Timor, the Moluccas and
Papua New Guinea. Indonesia
borders Timor-Leste, Malaysia,
and Papua New Guinea by
land and Australia, India, Palau,
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand,
Vietnam and Christmas Island
by sea. The capital, Jakarta, is
located near the north-western
coast of Java.
The nation is comprised
of around 17,500 islands and
islets, and while famous for the
romantic holiday destination of
Bali, Indonesia is also known
for its 147 volcanos, with 76 of
them active and erupting all the
time. Only the USA and Russia
have more.
Indonesia has the largest
Muslim population in the
world – with 87 per cent of the
population being Muslim it’s
home to roughly 12 per cent of
all Muslims on the planet. It
also has the biggest Buddhist
temple in the world, Borobudur.
The country is very diverse,
as though it’s made up of
several different countries, with
different looks and different
languages.
For tourists there are beaches
upon beaches, food, surfing
and diving, plus a huge and
varied amount of wildlife,
including Komodo dragons and
orangutans, Sumatran tigers,
elephants and rhinos, giant
squirrels, sun bears, and slow
In 2020 Indonesia was the
number 16 economy in the
world in terms of GDP. The
top exports are palm oil, coal
briquettes, gold, petroleum gas
and ferroalloys, exporting mostly
to China, USA, Japan, Singapore
and India. In the same year it
was the world’s biggest exporter
of palm oil and coconut oil.
The top imports of Indonesia
are refined petroleum, crude
petroleum, telephones, planes,
helicopters and petroleum gas,
importing mostly from China,
Singapore, Japan, Thailand and
the USA. In 2020, Indonesia
was the world’s biggest importer
of steam turbines, military
weapons and human hair.
Indonesia is one of the world’s
main suppliers of rubber, coffee,
cocoa, and palm oil; it also
produces a wide range of other
commodities, such as sugar, tea,
tobacco, copra and spices.
Although Indonesia has
remained a major importer
of manufactured goods, high
technology and technical
skills since the early 1970s,
the country’s economic
base has shifted from the
primary sector to secondary
and tertiary industries –
manufacturing, trade, and
services. Manufacturing
surpassed agriculture in terms
of contribution to GDP in the
early 1990s and has continued to
be the largest single component
of the country’s economy.
Indonesia has some of
the world’s largest tracts of
exploitable tropical forest. Since
the 1960s the timber industry
has grown rapidly, but it has
caused considerable damage
through deforestation. Also
a threat to the environment
are frequent large-scale forest
fires, most of which stem from
“slash-and-burn” subsistence
agriculture or government
clearing for plantations; these
fires not only destroy vast areas
of vegetation but also generate
haze that frequently reaches as
far as Singapore and peninsular
Malaysia. Deforestation and
air quality issues prompted
environmentalists to urge the
Indonesian government to
curtail clear-cutting of trees,
control burning and implement
The manufacturing sector
has become the single largest
contributor to the economy,
constituting well over a quarter
of GDP and employing just
over one-tenth of the labour
force. A significant proportion
of production is handled by
medium- and small-scale
privately owned enterprises
and workshops, which supply
consumer goods and general
products as furniture, household
equipment, textiles, and
printed matter. The centre of
private industry is in western
Java, although considerable
development has taken place in
Jakarta.
Indonesia has become an
established international supplier
of petroleum and petroleum
products, rubber products,
garments, shoes, textiles, wood
and wood products (including
paper), machinery of various
sorts (including cars) and other
commodities, such as electronic
products. Primary imports
include petroleum and natural
gas, machinery, chemicals,
metals, and transport equipment.
Indonesia’s most important
trading partners include Japan,
the United States, Singapore,
China, South Korea, Thailand,
Malaysia, and Australia.
Strong economic growth is
helping the country achieve
dramatic reductions in poverty
and increasing investment
in basic services, particularly
education.
Indonesia is the largest
archipelagic country in the
world and the world’s secondlargest
producer of seafood.
Its fisheries are of global
importance. The country’s waters
support over 3,000 species of
bony fishes and more than 850
sharks, rays, and chimaeras. The
fisheries industry employs about
12 million Indonesians.
Indonesia harvests more
deep water snapper and grouper
than any other nation. These
fisheries are vital for national
food security, but unsustainable
fishing practices are driving
large-scale decline in the
snapper-grouper population.
INDONESIA
H O W D O T H E Y F I S H ?
Shows are back in business!
The country is home to many fishing
tackle manufacturers such as PT.Central
Saranapancing, with brands such as Relix,
and Indoackle who supply to many big
brands and outlets. In October of this year
the Indonesia Fishing Tackle Exhibition
returns after not being held since 2019
due to Covid. The biggest fishing tackle
exhibition in Indonesia, it is a great place
for anglers to gather again and exhibitors
can introduce the latest products from the
industry to anglers in the archipelago.
There’s plenty of offshore
sport for big-game fish in
Indonesia.
Saltwater fishing is more popular in
Indonesia than freshwater fishing, as
Indonesian rivers are very muddy. Fishing
is possible on artificial reservoirs, where
you can catch large carp and catfish.
Indonesia offers anglers a variety of sea
fishing opportunities out amongst the
numerous islands, on various types and
sizes of boats, with experienced skippers.
While most trips focus on trolling and
bottom fishing, jigging is also popular.
There is some serious offshore fishing
to target blue and black marlin, sailfish,
yellowfin tuna, sailfish, giant trevally, mahi
mahi, plus barracuda and amberjack. With
over three million square metres of sea
territory between the Indian Ocean and
Pacific Ocean, Andaman Sea, Banda Sea,
Flores Sea, Savu Sea, Arafura Sea, Java
Sea, Celebes Sea, Molucca Sea and Timor
Sea the waters of Indonesia are home
to some giant specimens of all of these
species.
There are also four types of mahseer
found in the fast flowing rivers of
Indonesia. This is one of the most powerful
freshwater fish to catch and can be caught
on minnow lures, spoons and crankbaits.
One of the most explored and accessible
islands, both for recreation and for fishing
is Java. Fishing is especially interesting on
the Ujung Kulon Peninsula, located in the
western part of Java, where you can fish on
beautiful unique reefs. Near the coast, you
can fish for blue, black and striped marlin,
as well as yellowfin tuna, which are caught
by trolling, using surface lures. Mackerel
live bait is also used. An octopus or a large
wobbler acts as a bait for marlin.
Another popular island for fishing is
Bali, where it is not difficult to find a boat
and fishing tackle on the coast, as well
as an experienced guide. Live bait and
artificial lures are used.
FEATURE
EFTTEX
WHY EUROPE IS SO
IMPORTANT TO THE
TACKLE TRADE
With more than 29 million anglers and a tackle market worth more than €2 billion, Europe
is a hugely lucrative marketplace. István Pál, Energofish CEO and EFTTA board member,
reveals why and how you can make it work.
Envious eyes from around the
world often cast a glance towards
Europe and its fishing tackle
scene – and with good reason.
With millions of anglers, a wide variety of
fishing styles and the birthplace of growth
areas like carp fishing, Europe is a place to
make money.
But the industry also faces many threats,
which is why the European Fishing
Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA) and
its associated trade event, EFTTEX (the
European Fishing Tackle Trade Exhibition),
are crucial to its future.
Since 1981 EFTTA has been
representing manufacturers, wholesalers,
retailers, importers and exporters of tackle
across the continent, promoting and
protecting their interests.
It has a strong voice lobbying the
European parliament on fishing industry
issues, while also proving valuable
information to members and explaining to
others the value of our trade.
With a population of roughly 575 million,
promoting fishing is vital to increasing
participation numbers while gaining
48 www.tackletradeworld.com
support within the European parliament to
safeguard the stocks, habitats and the sport
in general, for future generations.
Key areas for tackle firms are carp and
feeder fishing, saltwater, spinning and
baitcasting, general and coarse and, of
course, fly fishing – in short, every major
sector is represented in one country or
another in Europe.
This is all down to an abundance of small
streams, vast rivers, huge lakes and countless
miles of coastline subject to wide extremes
of temperature, from the warm, sunny
shores of the Mediterranean to the freezing
waters of the Baltic and North Seas.
Europe also supports an estimated 14,000
tackle shops – all prospective buyers for
global tackle brands, with 6,000 in central
Europe alone, including some key retail
chains.
It is where some of the first automated
storage systems and robot-run warehouses
were set up to service this vast market and it
is still seen as a leader in this field.
There are also thought to be upwards
of 2,000 tackle manufacturers across the
continent.
For these reasons, supporting the
association by becoming a member and
making the most of its trade show make
perfect sense.
EFTTEX will return in 2023 from June
15th to 17th in the beautiful setting of
Budapest, Hungary, helping buyers find new
products and new suppliers while allowing
brands to launch their latest gear and giving
everyone a strong platform to meet together
for the first time in four years.
But if you can’t wait that long then
the EFTTEX Digital Best New
Product Showcase has welcomed many
entrants, keen to showcase their latest
offerings, judged by an independent jury
and providing global exposure on an
unparalleled scale.
• The information was part of a presentation
at Icast2022 about doing business with Europe,
an initiative to build stronger relations between
the American Sportfishing Association and
EFTTA, supported by CEO Olivier Portrat.
PENN INTRODUCES A
HIGHER AUTHORITY
When one of saltwater fishing’s most trusted names set out to create its most refined
spinning reels ever, it took on a challenge like never before. The PENN Authority range has
united the fishing tackle industry in praise for its durability, performance and reliability.
Here’s how they did it…
50
www.tackletradeworld.com

PENN
FEATURE
smooth retrieves years into owning an
Authority.
Even the Slammer Drag System and
Dura Drag combination go above and
beyond what the average angler would
ever need but these are the steps PENN
deemed necessary to make a reel it was
happy to call one of its greatest ever – and
this reel isn’t just for average anglers.
Hardly anything on the Authority is
industry standard. Expensive, bespoke
engineering helps set it apart from not
just other brands but also other PENN
reels.
It’s easy for the words “ultimate
premium reel” to get lost in the buzz
of marketing noise surrounding new
fishing tackle products. But when
those words come from the senior brand
manager for one of saltwater fishing’s
best-known and most dependable brands,
PENN, they carry a little extra weight.
Ben Joyce, the aforementioned brand
manager, said those words about the allnew
PENN Authority range of saltwater
spinning reels – reels that the Pure
Fishing brand set out to make their most
refined, smoothest, most powerful and
most durable ever.
Still sound like marketing buzz? Well,
the details tell a different story.
for 30 minutes and not suffer any water
ingress but the PENN Authority can do
that, thanks to its IPX-8-rated sealed
body.
Do you really need a reel with a
stainless steel gear train and pinion
gear that’s CNC-cut? Maybe not, but
the Authority brings that so that it can
withstand the most severe punishment
“The Authority can withstand the most severe
punishment and pressure, trip after trip.”
and pressure, fishing trip after fishing trip
after fishing trip.
Those 13 stainless steel ball bearings
might seem like overkill but anglers
who push their gear to the limit will be
thankful when it means they get silky
Winning anglers over
And it seems the industry agrees: rave
early reviews from the fishing tackle
media culminated in a Best Saltwater
Reel award at ICAST – a category that
is notoriously competitive and requires
genuine innovation to win.
A key factor in that award victory was
all of this meticulous and gruelling R&D
being available for a price that surprised
many.
And, with sizes from 2500 through
to 10500, the range has something for
almost every style of sea fishing.
Maybe the Authority does go beyond
what is required in terms of keeping
saltwater out, in its stopping power and in
its longevity.
But isn’t that what fishing is about
– hope?
Maybe one day, you’ll hook into the
fish-of-a-lifetime that will make you glad
you have the right tools for the battle.
They didn’t name it the Authority by
accident…
PENN
www.pennfishing.com
Failure not an option
To make a top-of-the-range reel for a
brand like PENN, you need to examine
what saltwater anglers who cannot afford
to fail really need from their fishing
tackle.
Sure, it has to look nice, and yes, it’s
great if has plenty of ball bearings (it’s
12+1, if you must know) but what matters
more than anything is that it performs.
Not just performs but does the job
so faultlessly that it almost becomes an
extension of the angler themself. And
how do you do that?
You get into the core of what
anglers need, and then you raise those
expectations to almost ridiculous heights.
No saltwater reel really needs to be able
to be submerged one metre underwater
Pahang: Malaysian Sea Fishing and Tourist
Attractions
AL-SULTAN Abdullah diiringi Tunku Azizah berkenan emotong kek ketika berangkat tiba
sempena Pesta Kuantan 188.
Pahang, located on the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula, is rich in sea
fishing resources and has many scenic spots. Yunbing in Pahang is a famous
sailfish fishing ground. Standing on the coastline of Yunbing, looking to the east,
it is the endless South China Sea. .
From July to October every year, with the change of ocean currents,
thousands of large groups of sailfish migrate from the Pacific Ocean to the coast
of Yunbing. The sailfish stay in this sea area and provide a rare opportunity for
anglers. A great opportunity to get up close and personal with sailfish. At this
time of year, fishermen from all over the world flock here, just for the dream of
sailfish in their hearts.
In July, the sailfish that first arrive at Yunbing will be larger, because they are
migratory pioneers, with a general weight of 40-50 kilograms and a length of
Dato’ Zulkifli Mohamad more than 3 meters; September to October is the peak period of intensive sailfish
migration, Dato’ Zulkifli Mohamadand their weight is average. It is 20-40 kg,
and the body length is more than 2 meters. It is no exaggeration to say that in August-September, when the density of sailfish is the
highest, thousands of sailfish swim the sea surface, sometimes with broad dorsal fins breaking the waves in front of the fisherman's
boat, the scene is very spectacular.
Yunbing, a quiet small fish port, becomes lively and full of vitality due to the arrival of fishermen when the sailfish season comes.
Every morning, the captain drives dozens of professional fishing boats with an average of 200 horsepower, heading eastward against
the rising sun. After 1 hour of sea journey, you can reach the sea area full of sailfish, and the fishing day will officially start.
In addition to fishing, there are also tourist benefits to go here, such as the Kuantan 188 Tower opened in the capital of Pahang
in recent years. Kuantan 188 Tower CEO Dato' Zulkifli Mohamad said: 188 Tower is a new landmark in Kuantan, the tallest tower
on the east coast and the second tallest tower in Malaysia. Currently, the first floor of the city with a height of 92 meters is open, and
visitors can enjoy 360-degree views. View Kuantan City; the second floor of 98 meters is a restaurant, and the third floor is an open
landscape, which will provide more outdoor games suitable for adventurers.
On Kuantan 188 Tower, you can see mountains, seas and rivers, and many major scenic spots have a panoramic view, including
Delondon Tower, Tanjung Nongpo Bridge, Kuantan River, Sepat Beach, etc.
If you like fishing and traveling, you must come!

Industry Interpretation: China's Hainan Province
issued the "Hainan Province Recreational Fisheries
Management Measures"
On September 14, the General Office of the Hainan Provincial
People's Government issued the "Administrative Measures for
Recreational Fisheries in Hainan Province (Trial)" (Qiong Fu
Ban [2022] No. 38) (hereinafter referred to as the "Administrative
Measures (Trial)"), which has a strong impact on the development
of recreational fisheries in Hainan. Provide guidance and norms.
The "Administrative Measures (Trial)" consists of five chapters and
twenty-three articles, which clarify the management of recreational
fisheries from the aspects of management system, operation
management, and safety management. The "Administrative Measures
(Trial)" will come into force on October 13, 2022 and will be valid for
3 years.
The "Administrative Measures (Trial)" pointed out that the
measures were formulated in order to promote the strategy of strengthening the province by oceans, regulate the operation of
recreational fisheries, ensure the safety of recreational fishery activities, and promote the high-quality development of recreational
fisheries. The development of recreational fishery should adhere to government guidance and industry self-discipline, give full play
to the enthusiasm of market players, cultivate tropical recreational fishery brands, and promote high-quality development of fisheries,
fishermen's conversion to production and income, and prosperity of fishing villages.
The "Administrative Measures (Trial)" stipulates that the competent department of recreational fishery in Hainan Province
shall take the lead in the management of recreational fishery safety. The people's governments of cities, counties, and autonomous
counties shall implement their territorial safety management responsibilities, establish a rescue mechanism for recreational
fishery emergencies, formulate emergency response plans for major recreational fishery accidents, urge all relevant management
departments to implement a joint coordination mechanism for safety management, and coordinate recreational fishery administrative
law enforcement. Work. The competent department of recreational fishery and the comprehensive administrative law enforcement
bureau shall strengthen the law enforcement work of recreational fishery through joint law enforcement and other forms to ensure
the orderly development of law enforcement work of recreational fishery.
The "Administrative Measures (Trial)" clarifies that the captain of a recreational fishing vessel is the first person responsible for
the safety management of the vessel, is directly responsible for the safety of the vessel, and has the independent decision-making
power to ensure the safety of life at sea, the security of the vessel and the prevention and control of vessel pollution. Crews of
recreational fishing boats shall obtain the corresponding fishery crew certificates in accordance with national regulations before they
can take up their posts. Encourage recreational fishing boats to set up full-time safety officers. Recreational fishing boats implement
the system of fixed port management and entry and exit reporting. Passengers shall not exceed the approved number of passengers.
Do not stop, pick up or drop off passengers and unload fish at places other than those specified. During the voyage, the navigation,
positioning, radar, collision avoidance system and other facilities and equipment should be turned on and ensure their normal
operation.

Chinese angler testing gamakatsu
freshwater rod
Test fishing rod, gamakatsu 15 feet hi-hi + 1.5 main line + 1.0 sub
line. Charge 80 yuan. Fishing started at 6 o'clock, and after arriving
at the fishing ground on time, the weather was dark, and the street
lights were on. In terms of fishing position, I originally wanted to
choose the vicinity of the aerator, but someone came one step ahead
of me. It has already been occupied and is secretly playing the nest.
When I look at it, I choose between No. 36 and No. 38 -------- even
number Side. When it is raining, the fishing seat cannot sit in the
right position.
Empty Shake Fei, all experts' evaluations of Fei are correct. Slightly
squeezing your hands, which is acceptable—in fact, once you catch
the fish, you just forget about squeezing your hands! The throw is
smooth and comfortable. Accurate and flexible. Unlike many black
pit poles now, the shaft is very thin. As for the painting, the 888 that
was kicked out said it was ugly, but I think it's okay. acceptable.
Gamakatsu's fishing rod really protects the line, except for the bottom
hanging, one to two catties of carp, usually the hard rod is cut to the
line, the soft rod cannot be controlled, and it can be pulled back after
a few tug-of-war. Amazing!
At the very beginning, the bottom handle was fishing against the
palm of the hand, and after a while, it was painful to grind, so I
grabbed a little forward, but it was boring again, and then I grabbed
it further. Elbow lifts! Dizzy fishing. Fortunately, Fei's excellent
elasticity helped me.
At the end of the half-day test, the fish weighed 75 pounds. Finally,
I concluded that the fishing rod of gamakatsu is suitable for small
guns, double-cooked fish, and particularly thin strands.
I used to think that the flying and carp of the gamakatsu series are
just like that, and many people also said that the vibration is not
much different.

LAST CAST...
Renowned fly angler and artist Charles Jardine is turning his attention away from game
fishing this month. Instead, he has his focus set on carp!
Carp! My Fishing for Schools
coaches target them when they
are with their students; I see
various luminaries – and not
so – cradling their beer-bellied trophies
(careful Jardine), and these scatter and
festoon the angling press like piscatorial
confetti. And… I don’t get it!
How have carp become the fish preeminent?
What has created this almost
evangelical zeal to catch, let’s face it, a
gigantic goldfish… well, okay, a relative
thereof.
Look, I have nothing against carp, or
indeed anyone pursuing them. But long
gone are the days of a creature bathed
in mystique, sultry summer bat-flight
nights, rose pink dawns with mist curling
from estate lakes and lily pad fringes like
ethereal wisps, Heron bite indicators,
Mark IV cane rods and a world
according to BB. None of that exists now.
I remember Gerry Savage and Jim
Gibbinson – back in the Kent days
– talking in hushed tones about new
baits… boiled baits… flavours and
elixirs that were doing their devastating
business on lakes in and around
Faversham and beyond.
The worm had turned, or rather, the
boilie had rolled. Suddenly carp fishing
was not so much stealth or hunting any
more, but a war of angling attrition aided
and abetted by the-then Delkim bite
alarms, full of loud bleeps, tones and
LED lights.
That was the moment, the change, the
new world angling order, right there.
Subsequently? Revolution.
There is absolutely no denying the
revival of fortunes this fish has wrought.
Almost a modern subculture. Of course,
there has been whiff of mischief and
downright malpractice over the years but
one thing has become utterly apparent –
had it not been for carp then our angling
world might have faced a fairly daunting
future.
No, you won’t get me to delve into
the alchemy of tastes, flavours, amino
acids, proteins, glugs, boosters and a host
of other weird concoctions in a fish’s
pursuit – it’s bad enough collecting fly
tying materials. And as for the array of
tackle available, which you lot, yes, you,
the trade have put on display, it is utterly
bewildering.
But, even there, opportunity exists.
Take those lovely folk at The Tackle
Box in Dartford, Kent. They have always
ensured that their staff are incredibly
well trained, versed and able to direct the
unsuspecting – and feasibly, bewildered
– client to precisely the right “thing” for
them: the correct rod, the balanced reel,
line and terminal tackle. What I simply
can’t get my head around – and probably
never will – is that I need a wheelbarrow
to take my gear to a place to fish (and
not just any wheelbarrow, either) or to
purchase a pair of specific bivvy slippers
to go with my camouflage tent and an
array of other camouflage items that
I probably couldn’t find in a month of
Sundays festooned amidst vegetation.
Mind you, the bedchairs! Some are
damn comfortable. I guess that’s a crumb.
But, rather than scoff, I shall try
and embrace the new… but on my
terms, with a fly rod, a pellet or biscuit
imitation, and celebrate the commercial
waters where we are allowed to use such
dreadful antediluvian, minimal tackle
and tactics. And, like the growing army
of thousands, celebrate that rather
extraordinary relative of a goldfish.
Marathon! There’s still time to donate to
In the properly safe external plastic cylinder, there is a special liquid, while, in the internal glass cartridge
a “long life” powder-based reagent can be found which is only used for the production of Night Wasp
tools. After breaking the cartridge the two substances are mixing and as a result of a chemical process,
the cartridge starts emiting a green light that does not disturb the eye at all. Night Wasp products has
an 80% longer lifetime than traditional night fishing accessories.
Due to the well separated active ingredients it is avoidable that the improperly stored lighting cartridge
loses its warranty and lighting ability.
