The world is our classroom.

The St. Paul’s Board of Trustees’ focus on Mission & Values coupled with clear direction sets in motion a unique learning
environment for each of our students. The school’s efforts to weave together academic rigor, service and community
express the uniqueness of the St. Paul’s experience, an approach that thrives on maintaining and nurturing a diverse,
equitable, and inclusive school community.
Early in September 2021 at our Board retreat, Cheryl shared her goals for the year, including her desire to hold a
diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) lens across all of the school's work. Our school is stronger than others on the DEI
spectrum, and that does not and should not mean that we compromise our dedication to academic quality. Instead, we
feel academically strong BECAUSE OF our DEI work.
DEI is in the fabric of St. Paul’s. It is the inner compass by which we deepen our strength as a community and amplify
our intellectual prowess as change agents of the world. We see and feel the fire in the belly of our students, our faculty,
our staff, our administrative team and certainly in our community which ensures we are inclusive at every level of impact.
The outcomes from this year’s work at the student, staff, and Board levels will feed into the school’s next strategic
planning cycle, which begins in the academic year 2022-2023.
In my final year as Chairperson of the St. Paul’s Board, I am mindful of a quote by Maya Angelou:
“If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.” Cheryl
Ting represents the 2021-2022 Board’s legacy to St. Paul’s.
With love in my heart for this beautiful community,
Francine Anthony
Dear St. Paul’s Community,
As I begin my third year at St. Paul’s, I am excited to share with you some of the highlights of our
academic year 2021-2022, beginning with our focus on the Lower School math curriculum
(“Mathematic Integrity Equals Resiliency”) and the first-ever Eighth Grade Capstone Project (“Our
Spark Manifested”).
One of my goals as Head of School is to seek out and lift up the voices and perspectives of
those who are not yet brought to the foreground. At St. Paul’s, we center on people and place as
part of our work in Community Engaged Learning and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to disrupt
systems of oppression and check our own entitlement. It’s essential that we approach our relationships with humility and
empathy, an example of which inspires our student-led empowerment groups (see “A Space of Our Own”).
We honor our founding Head of School, the Reverend Canon David Forbes with contributions from previous Heads of St.
Paul’s Episcopal School. I know that I stand on their shoulders and could not do the work that I do without their vision.
There is a foundational charge that Canon Forbes helped to establish which informs everything I get to do as St. Paul’s
current Head. And, I never take that for granted.
I come to school every day, see our amazing, beautiful students and the teachers and staff who LOVE them and seek to
cultivate all the brilliance before them. The overall success of a St. Paul’s education depends on the engagement and
support of our parent/family volunteers.
With gratitude for your enthusiasm and energy,
Cheryl Ting, Head of School

Mathematic Integrity = Resiliency
By Jenny Ernst
K-5 Math/Science Curriculum Coordinator
Common Core Standards
In 2021, Cheryl Ting (Head of School) and Nayo Brooks (Director of Lower School) charged me with realigning
St. Paul's mathematics curriculum with the K-12 Common Core National Standards. We looked deep look into
all aspects of our mathematics program and gave ourselves space to make forward-thinking decisions. We
decided to shift from using textbook brand language for our scope and sequence to using the Common Core
standards in their purest form. Anchoring our school standards independent of any particular text frees teachers
to incorporate new teaching materials while seamlessly unifying the K-8 mathematics program. As one teacher
commented, “It’s liberating to align our curriculum in this way”.
The “Covid Gap”
Using the NWEA MAP tests, we assess our third through eighth grade students in language use, reading, and
mathematics twice per school year. While mathematics scores of roughly 82 million students in U.S. public and
private schools declined by 5-10 percentile points between 2020 and 2022, St. Paul’s students prevailed during
distance and return-to-classroom learning with parallel to and slightly improved increases in their achievement
scores. And, at a local level, our resilient students scored slightly better than their California independent school
peers. From empirical data to everyday obsesrvations, our success comes from excellent Student Engaged
Learning (SEL), careful pedagogical choices, responsive learning support, student acumen, and family engagement.
Ms. Ernst offered math challenges
to the 5th graders - feeding hungry
lions!
Ms. Ernst’s Math League drew over
120 2nd-5th graders who competed
against 7,000+ students nationally.
Supplying teachers with differentiated tasks
helped them better understand their students.
Third graders learned Japanese
Notan, an artwork principle of
black and white harmony.

Our Spark Manifested
By Anthony Hopkins
Eighth Grade Social Studies / Capstone Coordinator / Black Student Union Faculty Advisor
Students of the Class of 2022 pioneered the St. Paul’s Capstone, a cumulative approach to
authentic research and presentation which capitalizes on the skills and understandings that
they’ve learned during their time at our school. Our graduating class of 54 students explored
broad and hard-hitting topics that not only capture student interest,
but also reflect their experience in Oakland and
the East Bay.
Based on our Mission & Values, students
developed an authentic, semester-long research
project based on their individual or mutual
interests. Research projects could be
grouped into three general categories:
Environment (stewardship), Culture (the
arts, spiritual), and Social (community,
social justice, diversity and inclusion). Each
student or group presented their findings to
the middle school student body. They also
reported on their personal experience about
what they learned and practiced throughout
the project. Self-reported learnings include
collaboration, community building, team
management, time management, clarifying
and communicating of needs, purpose, and
input; emergent strategies for navigating
decision making and effecting change.
Academic self-reported learning points
include digital media production, creative
writing, fact checking, building supporting
materials, critical thinking, project planning,
research, communication skills, active
learning, and most noted, public speaking.
The effectiveness of Capstone is the
motivation to continue the work beyond
middle school, as one such student has by
creating their own business which protects
our forests and communities from wildfires.
“One skill I learned at St. Paul's that helped me conduct my
Capstone project was public speaking/speaking to people I
don't know as well. This helped me when we were
conducting our interviews, and also helped me when we
presented the project. Also, everything that we learned
about double-checking websites to make sure that they are
valid really helped me when we were doing our research
part of the project. I learned a lot during my Capstone
• Local Businesses
• Neurodiversity at SPES
project, and had a lot of fun doing it.”
Student-chosen Capstone topics:
• Pollution in and around Lake
Merritt
• Art in Oakland
• Colorism and Racism
• Immigration and Mental Health
• Litter in the Parks
• Makerspaces in Oakland
• Pollution in Lake Merritt
• Homelessness
Affinity Groups at St. Paul's
*
What matters
fundamentally is the
individual’s experience
of belonging...
As we define how we look at our curriculum to
deepen our participation in antiracist work at St.
Paul’s, we must actively de-center
white-supremacist spaces and structures and lift
up the perspectives and experiences of those
who are not centered societally and historically.
Creating time for intentional, explicit, and
courageous conversations about identity and the
various perspectives and experiences within our
community is a priority for our school. Ultimately,
our goal is to shift the dominant narrative.
An affinity group is a designated space where
everyone in the group shares a particular
identity. This identity can be based on race,
ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation,
language, nationality, physical/mental ability,
socio-economic class, family structure, religion,
etc. For our students in Grades 5-8, affinity
groups evolved around race, ethnicity, gender
identity, and sexual orientation. These groups
were formed and facilitated by our students -
they identified their need and desire to commune
in affinity spaces.
It’s not enough to be a diverse and inclusive educational community; what matters fundamentally is the individual’s
experience of belonging. Affinity spaces provide opportunities to be seen, and bring visibility to an identity’s experience
and perspective. It’s critical that we provide our youth with avenues to hone their own voices and agency as they explore
their own identity. When we can speak our truths and be fully authentic with each other, we build trust in connection with
others.
* The Jewish Student Union & Alliance was formed in late Spring 2022. This logo
serves as a placeholder until they have designed their own.

Reunited and it feels so good: Updates from the PA
Back to School…for parents
With the challenges of distance and hybrid learning in
the rear view, this year the St. Paul’s Parent
Association (PA) worked hard to establish a new
normal for families. The return of on-campus
volunteering and in-person events brought us closer
together. With a renewed sense of joy, we enjoyed
coffee and donuts in the Labyrinth Courtyard, Chapel
in the park, and chaperoning field trips. Our wonderful
Room Parents and Room Parent Coordinators
shepherded us through routines old and new. Our PA
Board worked behind the scenes to make sure
connection and communication between the parents
and the school remained strong. Virtual PA meetings
offered important “Windows In” to school life and
introduced the parent community to the work of our
K-5 Math and Science Curriculum Coordinator Jenny
Ernst and new Middle School Head Marcus Chang.
In with the New
This spring the PA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Committee launched St. Paul’s first wave of affinity
groups for St. Paul's adult family members (parents,
step-parents, guardians, and caregivers). Affinity
groups provide a safe, supportive environment for
historically marginalized groups to gather and connect
over shared experiences. Five affinity groups started
in March, each led by parent volunteers: Latinx
Heritage, Black Heritage, Asian Pacific Islander Desi
American Heritage, White Anti-Racist, and
Parents/Caregivers of Neurodivergent Children. The
PA DEI Committee sees this as only a beginning and
will enthusiastically support more groups as they take
shape.
OakTown 2022: Shine Your Light, Share Your Spark
April 2022 saw the glorious return to an in-person
OakTown celebration. Tickets sold out. St. Paul’s
parents, friends, and staff enjoyed an evening
socializing with a purpose – all night-of proceeds
directly benefited St. Paul’s unique Flexible Tuition
program. The event brought together dozens of parent
volunteers, who created a warm and whimsical space
at Oakstop, a co-working and event space, whose
founder and CEO Trevor Parham is also a Second
Grade parent.

Congratulations, Class of 2021
Our St. Paul's community stepped up on June 2, 2021 in gracious support of their graduating eighth grade class, from
the sixth grade-hosted reception to our own Ms. Turner's star turn for the music department. Our Class of 2021 rounded
out their final year with beautiful singing in the church. There's no ceremony like a St. Paul's graduation, a special
moment when we all come together for the same purpose: to send our students into the world with celebration,
appreciation, and love.
Honoring David Forbes
“The process of education involves give and take, concessions and compromise,
argument and debate: all products of the dialectic resulting from the differing
backgrounds and opinions of participants.”
In 1975 the Honorable Reverend Donald Seaton of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and The Reverend Canon David Forbes
formed St. Paul’s Episcopal School, an institution grounded in the principle that social, economic, and racial diversity are
essential to education. Canon Forbes was already a force in Episcopal education. He authored "Social, Economic, and
Racial Mix in Episcopal Schools,” a document that has become a touchstone for Episcopal schools across the country,
establishing a commitment to diversity and financial equity.
We asked Heads who have carried the spirit of our founding Head through the years for their reflections on Canon
Forbes’ legacy. Canon Forbes’ vision resonates across time, remaining core to the School’s Mission and Values.
Josh Stern (2014-2020)
Tuition assistance is St. Paul’s second largest investment
behind teacher salaries, a pair of financial priorities which
creates a highly dynamic learning environment. “In the
classroom, there is a driving force to value all voices and
not privilege some over the others,” explained Josh Stern.
We see each other. Our passion for the school and the
work that we do in community ties directly to human
dignity.
Rick Ackerly (1988-2000)
The school is successful because of the mix of students
that reflects and engages with our urban location. Rick
Ackerly noted that “teachers with a commitment to
diversity naturally have a commitment to individualizing
their instruction. Everyone--teachers, students, parents,
administrators—is driven to focus on the unique spark in
each of us, and to build a community that educates us by
leading that spark out into the world to contribute
creatively and collectively to it.”
Karan Merry (2000-2014)
“Our mission is a beautiful thing because it keeps
inspiring us.” St. Paul’s is a special place because it
elevates academic focus alongside a dedication to
spirituality. “Faith is believing in who we are and where we
want to be,” said Ms. Merry. “Being in a place that reminds
us to feel love, joy, and resilience gives us dignity.”
Cheryl Ting (2020-current)
As she completes her second year at St. Paul’s, our
current Head of School Cheryl Ting embraces these
insights as she takes our school into the next phase of its
life. “At St. Paul’s, we are stronger because we are
courageous in how we recognize our biases and how that
plays out in our interactions with one another. We
recognize that with the breadth of our diversity, comes the
responsibility to look inward as well as at each other – to
see one another fully just as each one of us desires to be
seen for our authentic selves and identities.”
Corwin Booth, ‘78; Past Board Member
Corwin Booth, graduate of the St. Paul’s Class of 1978,
remembers Canon Forbes’ regular presence on the corner
of Montecito Avenue and Bay Place (Mr. Booth took the
photograph pictured at right when he was in Fourth Grade
at St. Paul’s!). “He was always available, a nice guy who
cared about you,” describes Mr. Booth.
As an alum, Mr. Booth served on the Board of Trustees
with Canon Forbes and remembers his assured and
gentle guidance: “The Mission of the school and keeping
it afloat are not always compatible. David knew that better
than anybody because he had to start from nothing. He
was the historical reference in support of the mission of
the school, and he understood it in his heart better than
anyone.”
“For me, the first nod toward
diversity training was just getting to
be friends with everybody.”
-Corwin Booth, Class of 1978

“By virtue of our common
humanity we possess the right to
develop the potential which lies
within.”
On April 26, 2022, The Reverend Canon
David Forbes passed away at the age of
96. He was born on April 29, 1926 in Palo
Alto, California. He served in the Army and
went on to earn his Bachelor of Science
and Master of Science in Geology from
Stanford University and his Master of
Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary.
In addition to his support of Episcopal
schools across the country, he was the
Founding Head at Cathedral School for
Boys in San Francisco and served as
Canon at Grace Cathedral for nearly 70
years. He is survived by three daughters
and their husbands, four grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren, and several
nieces and nephews.
We extend our gratitude to Canon Forbes’
family. We see you, we thank you, and we
wish you well.
