Using welded
aluminum and hand
sewn fabrics, Susan
Ferrari Rowley
explores lines, space, form, and human emotion.
Since the start of her career, Rowley — who
acquired her MST and MFA at Rochester
Institute of Technology in New York — has
pushed boundaries and has played a major role
in promoting the use of fabric in the world of
fine art. Her work raises questions about the
standards for what is considered a proper
medium for sculpture.
Photos on fabric, stretched
over aluminum frames
Inspired by cultural issues she experiences in her
own life, her sculptures play with the balance of
positive and negative space to create forms that
seem to defy gravity.
Susan Ferrari Rowley has won best in show at
The International Art Competition and she has
been accepted into the prestigious OK Harrison
Gallery in Manhattan.
Her national recognition is especially impressive
when considering that only 5-7% of work in
galleries was done by a woman. Even less create
large sculptural pieces like Rowley does.
Her latest work for Photofocus combines
photography with her signature metal and fabric
sculptures. Rowley continues to push boundaries
and surpass expectations with her beautiful and
unique sculptures.
Collisions – sometimes aggressive and
oftentimes unnoticed – can signify a
change in current, but maybe more
importantly can result in increased
amplitude. This goes for social efforts,
oceanic, and auditorial. The more
wavelengths we find ourselves around
oftentimes translates to increased
levels of opportunity.
A Word from Jonathan
I lead with this as we find ourselves
amongst some colliding energies, over on
Hoffner Street. And while some are tough
to deal with, all at least seemed to be
lined with silver. This is one reason why I’d
like to publically share some of the things
we’re battling through.
If you’re familiar with our journey, you
probaly already know that it’s one built
on adversity. We often get knocked back
a step or two before powering ahead, two
The win here is
that more time
can be spent
building...
or three paces. Our work is akin to an NFL
offensive line. We must protect our quarterback
– our mission to empower diverse
communities of people who believe in
the arts – while creating room for impactful
runs, like the opening of new exhibitions.
Still, long gains like the creation of our new
facility remain in the mix.
In the coming months, I plan to do a more
reflective dive on the status of PAR-. But
for the sake of time, I’d like to simply spark
some curiosity. Questions later.
What’s apparent to our team is that this
should be our third PAR-Quarterly, but it’s
only our second. Growing pains are real.
Since launching PQ, we’ve lost our leader of
Development, so a number of our communication
efforts are on the struggle bus. But
in the same breath, we gained our first ever
design intern. The win here is that more time
can be spent building and growing relationships,
while small yet time-consuming design
projects can be handled by others. But again,
on the other side of the coin, items like our
IOBY campaign completely stalled as that
was a development-based effort …but don’t
worry, we’re still pushing.
Pushing, pushing, pushing.
But before rambling on, “THANK YOU!!”
to all of you who wrote letters to our state
representatives to support the $350,000
funding recommendation we received from
Hamilton County!!
Sadly, without a proper lobbyist in place,
we were cut from the state budget in the
final hours. Ouch... “Maybe next time is
what they say.” New levels of pain were
felt in that moment. But again, from
unexpected corners, a number of donors
and organizations like The Greater Cincinnati
Foundation helped us raise close
to $50,000 in less than two months. And
while nowhere near $350K, this catalyzed
two extremely important things. 1) It
reminded us that we are not alone in our
mission to bring more equality to the arts
...to give our
humble, Blackled
organization
a bit of your
time.
…and 2) It brought our capital campaign dollars
to the $300,000 mark, which green-lighted
our $150,000 funding match from The Carol
Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. Foundation.
Wait, what? …so you’re fully funded?!?
I’m sharing these notes to remind folks that the
PAR- train rolls on. In today’s case, we’re more
of a boat getting splashed around as the tide
continues to do as it chooses. But ultimately, as
we look to close out another year, the most important
takeaway is that we are alive and well.
We’re still continuing to fundraise on both IOBY
and via our website. We’re still hosting events
and planning for next year. We’re still working
with Team B Architecture & Design, and a few
others, on the full redesign of our Northside
Headquarters. Studeo PAR- continues to grow
and create opportunities for local and visiting
artists alike.
So frankly, if you haven’t plugged back into
PAR- since the onset of COVID, maybe it’s time
to give our humble, Black-led organization a bit
of your time. Schedule a call. Schedule a lunch.
Schedule a visit to our growing campus. We’re
here to build, but can only build something
great when your voice becomes part of the
conversation.
