OUR HEAD COACH SETS THE SCENE
FOR TONIGHT’S GAME...
Since my last programme notes, I’m very
pleased that we’ve managed to strengthen
our squad further with the signing of Elijah
Dixon-Bonner.
Elijah’s a young player with a very good future in
front of him and he’s delighted to sign for QPR and
be back in London. I’m sure you’ll all give him a warm
welcome as he begins his career at Loftus Road.
I’ve spoken before about how we want to make
Loftus Road into a fortress. Every team that aspires
to have a successful season needs a strong home
record to enable them to achieve it – and I felt
our last game here against Reading was a good
example of that. Overall, it was everything we want
to see from a QPR team in terms of commitment,
drive, effort and lots of technical ability thrown into
the mix as well against very good opponents.
We also had a fantastic atmosphere on the
night and I felt that, on and off the pitch, what
we showed against Reading is exactly the way
we want to portray our club. Not only to our
opponents, but also to the TV viewers who were
watching the game.
Our 2-1 win rounded off a very big week for us,
where we took nine points out of the nine available
and that meant we went into the Luton game
last Saturday full of confidence. But it turned into
a really disappointing day for us overall, both in
terms of the performance and the result. We lost
players to injury before the game and then having
Leon Balogun forced to go off so early on really
disrupted our flow.
We had a big moment in the game when we
were really in the ascendancy and came close
to equalising through Jake Clarke-Salter.
Unfortunately we weren’t quite able to take that
opportunity and then just a couple of minutes later
we conceded the second goal – along with another
injury to Jimmy Dunne. That incident probably
summed up our day.
The away support at Luton was excellent and I’d
say the other big positive to take from the trip was
the return of Taylor Richards, who came on for the
last 10 to 15 minutes. It’s good to have him playing
again and we all hope that’s only the beginning of
his QPR story.
It’s now about putting that result behind us and
moving on quickly – which we have to do as we
now face two home games in four days, starting
with tonight’s fixture. A warm welcome to Cardiff
and Mark Hudson, who’s made a really positive
start to life as their caretaker manager – after
this evening’s game, we wish Mark and his players
well. We’re going into tonight on the back of three
away games – and two away wins – in our last
four. As much as those big away performances at
Bristol City and Sheffield United have given us all
a lot of confidence, these home games are really
important, as I’ve already said.
Never doubt the part you play in driving us on,
especially here at Loftus Road. I believe the
atmosphere you created against Reading was the
difference between a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 win. The
energy that your support got out of the group was
far greater than any words of encouragement I can
offer and we’ll thrive on that support again tonight.
Come on you R’s!
FIRST DEFEAT IN SIX
Freeman tapped home Harry
Cornick’s cross to make it 3-1
in the second minute of injury
time just after an own goal by
Ethan Horvath had given the R’s
renewed hope.
Elijah Adebayo opened the
scoring with an 18th-minute
header, but Mick Beale’s men
went close to levelling when Jake
Clarke-Salter’s effort rattled the
Luton crossbar.
However, the home side doubled
their advantage after a defensive
mix-up, with the ball deflecting
off Jimmy Dunne and beyond the
stranded Seny Dieng.
Rangers halved the deficit
when Rob Dickie’s header
struck goalkeeper Horvath
and bounced over the line, but
Freeman’s immediate response
snuffed out any late chance of a
AS WE CELEBRATE RAINBOW LACES UNDER
THE LIGHTS, THE NEW CHAIR OF OUR LGBTQ+
SUPPORTERS GROUP, RICHARD YOUNG, EXPLAINS
WHY INITIATIVES LIKE THIS ARE STILL NEEDED IN 2022.
Why do we have a Rainbow
Laces match every year?
Why do we need an LGBT
supporters group? Don’t we
already have equality in 2022?
In my short time as chair of
QPR’s LGBTQ+ supporters
group – Rainbow Rangers
– these are just a few of the
questions I’ve been asked. The
simple answer, and the sad fact
of the matter, is that things
might not be quite as rosy as you
think. In fact, YouGov research
for Stonewall found that 43 per
cent of LGBTQ+ people felt
unsafe and unwelcome at public
sporting events.
Not so long ago, it seemed that
we were finally on an upwards
trajectory, with a number of
high profile men’s players finally
feeling safe enough to come
out. Only last month, Zander
Murray became the first openly
gay Scottish men’s footballer.
But anyone who witnessed
the Casillas ‘coming-out/
not coming-out’ debacle on
Twitter recently couldn’t have
failed to notice the sheer
volume of hateful comments
that followed. And let us not
forget that the men’s World
Cup is being held in a country
where it’s not even safe to talk
positively about being LGBTQ+,
let alone come out.
So our purpose as a fan group
(and the idea behind Rainbow
Laces) is simple – let’s make
football a place for everyone.
A place for everyone to feel
safe. A place for everyone
to feel welcome. And a place
for everyone to be their true
selves.
It’s not all doom and gloom
– the response we’ve had in
recent weeks from fellow QPR
fans has been nothing short
of amazing. Not just from the
LGBTQ+ fans – of all ages,
races and backgrounds, dotted
throughout the stadium – but
the allies, the parents of gay
kids, the fans who remember
a time when there were no
conversations about inclusivity.
It’s you fellow R’s who give
me hope that one day we
might not need an LGBTQ+
supporters group and we
might not need to light up the
stadium with rainbows to share
our message. But that day
hasn’t come yet.
Like all clubs, we have our fair
share of keyboard warriors,
12 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
and our fair share of fans who
don’t think before they shout
or don’t think what the words
they sing might be doing to
the person sat next to them.
Not through spite or hatred or
malice necessarily, but through
a lack of understanding or
experience.
That’s why we’re really proud
to be able to work so closely
with the club and the Trust
to plan events like Rainbow
Laces. To get people talking.
To get people thinking. And
slowly but surely, to help make
Loftus Road that place where
everyone feels welcome.
If you’re interested in finding
out how you can get involved
with Rainbow Rangers,
PASSING ON
THE BATON
QPR has been part
of my family for
generations. But as
a gay woman, I didn’t
know how to find and
connect with others
like me within the club.
That’s why, with the
full support of the
Community Trust, I set
up Rainbow Rangers.
I’ve enjoyed every
minute of building this
community but, after five
years, one child and a
move up north, it’s time
to hand over the reins to
someone who can give
more time and energy to
growing the membership.
hoops
Sam, how would you assess the season so far?
Positive and promising are probably the two
words I’d use. We’re not even a third of the way
through the season and we’ve shown signs of
what we can do, but there’s also a hell of a lot
for us to work on. Actually, I’d add a third word –
exciting. It’s nice to be part of and at the minute
there’s a good energy around the place.
Do you feel that recent run of three straight
wins, including a victory at Bramall Lane, made
people sit up and take notice of QPR?
I hope so. It was probably a marker for us more
than anything – to recognise that we can go
and play against top teams and get points.
The way we won those games was a little bit of
everything, sometimes great attacking football
and sometimes dogged defending. If it has laid
down a marker to the rest of the Championship,
great – although that brings its own challenges
when teams come with specific game plans
against you. People chatting ahead of that week
might have estimated four or five points from
those three games, so to get nine was fantastic.
But at the same time you don’t want it to be the
highlight of your season.
It might have been tempting to get carried
away, but I can’t imagine the boss would have
let that happen…
No chance of the boss getting carried away!
Yes, there was a pat on the back but then he was
straight back on it, telling us where we need to
improve. He wouldn’t let us get too far ahead of
ourselves, that isn’t what we need 14 games
into the season.
Unfortunately our winning run came to an end
at Luton, but now it’s all about how the team
respond…
While you’re on a wave, you’ve got to make the
most of it but at some time we will go through
a bad patch. What we didn’t do well last season
was to turn it around quickly, we went on four or
five-game losing streaks and you can’t do that
in the Championship. When you lose a game,
make sure you turn it around as soon as possible
16 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
because, if you don’t pay attention, you can slip
down the table very quickly.
At the start of the season, you spoke about
trying to develop into more of a box-to-box
player – is that still the long-term aim?
Whatever’s required of me is the aim. I want
to improve in all areas. I’ve had to go back to
being deeper holding, but I’ve got no problem
with that – it’s something I’ve enjoyed last
season and this. The manager’s trying to add
more tools to my toolbox really and I’d still
like to develop that side of my game. I think
it’s something I can do but implementing it
is dependent on our shape and the match
situation.
Tim Iroegbunam looks as though he might
have that quality about him – is it fair to say
he’s made an impact pretty quickly?
You can see the talent of Tim straight
away. He’s still 19 but what you saw in
the game against Reading was a really
mature performance and, although the
Championship’s a tough playground to come
and learn in, you’ll see him continue to grow this
season. I’ve enjoyed playing with him so far and
he’s only going to help the team.
Suddenly there’s a lot of competition for
those midfield spots, does that pressure
bring the best out of you?
I don’t think it should worry anyone, that’s
what we all sign up for! It’s only a positive thing
because it’s about trying to make the best QPR
– the gaffer’s stated that many times. It’s really
healthy that we’ve got a competitive squad,
we’re all desperate to play and that’s only going
to make everyone better. I think later we might
look back and think it’s exactly what we needed.
I’m fully aware other people are trying to take
my spot and I’ve no problem with that. All I can
do is train hard and do my best on a matchday.
Along with Seny Dieng and Ilias Chair, you’ve
started every game so far. That must be
particularly satisfying after missing so much
playing time through injury a year ago…
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
17

hoops
Definitely, from the start of last season to the
start of this one has been like chalk and cheese!
I’m very happy to be playing and I’ll keep striving
to do that. It’s been a good start and to get that
rhythm into your game is always vital.
Having captained Rangers for the first time
in the cup tie at Charlton earlier this season,
is it something you could see yourself doing
permanently further down the line?
Hopefully. When the manager pulled me for that
one and told me I was going to be captain, it
was a great honour and it took me by surprise.
Unfortunately losing on penalties means I
haven’t got a great record as captain! Seriously,
though, we’ve got a lot of good leaders in the
squad and I don’t feel you always have to wear
the armband to fill that role and help your teammates.
It’s really good that he wants different
people doing it, everyone has different qualities
and personalities and that’s healthy.
Tonight’s opponents, Cardiff, have picked up
since their change of manager – do you expect
another hard-fought game?
I remember last season we were 1-0 up against
Cardiff, looking pretty comfortable and lost in
the end, so we’re fully aware we need to right
that wrong. Cardiff are a big physical team with
lots of qualities and it’s always a difficult time to
play a team when they’ve got a new manager. It’ll
be a good game, especially under the lights and
we’ll be ready for them.
SINTON
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
Good evening everyone and welcome back
to Loftus Road for tonight’s game against
Cardiff City.
Cardiff have made an indifferent start to the
season and, as I write these notes, currently sit
in 18th position in the table – which I’m sure they
will be looking to improve on in the coming games
and weeks. Prior to Saturday they had taken seven
points from the nine on offer, which is a very
good return, but they suffered a disappointing
home defeat to bottom club Coventry City at the
weekend, so will come here tonight looking to
make up for that.
We ourselves go into the game on the back of
a defeat at Luton last weekend. Following three
successive wins against Bristol City, Sheffield
United and Reading, we would have gone to
Kenilworth Road full of confidence, but on
the day I felt Luton were the better side and
imposed themselves and their style of play on us
throughout the game.
However, at 1-0 down, we hit the bar through Jake
Clarke-Salter and then made a crucial mistake
which resulted in Luton going further ahead. A
goal with a few minutes remaining gave us some
hope but it was Luton who increased their lead to
send us all home with nothing and disappointed,
especially after the run we have been on. Often
when things go against you, as they did on
Saturday, it is important to look at it but not dwell
on it for too long. The beauty of the Championship
is that the next game is usually not too far away.
Yes, Saturday was not what we wanted in terms
of the performance and the result, but we have
started the season well and got ourselves into a
good position. There will be bumps in the road
over the course of the season, but it is vital we
keep doing the right things on and off the pitch
and striving to improve every day, every game as
best we can.
Tonight’s game, here at Loftus Road in front of our
fans, gives us the opportunity to put the weekend
behind us and get another three points. Like every
game in the Championship, it won’t be easy – no
game in the Championship ever is – and Cardiff will
be tough opponents for us to overcome.
Last week I was able to attend the annual fans’
forum where Mick Beale, Les Ferdinand and Lee
Hoos spoke and gave very honest answers to all
the questions asked and shared their views on all
things at the club as we move forward. Speaking
to many of our fans that were in attendance on the
night, there is a good optimism around the club
at present and I hope that will continue to be the
case as the season progresses.
Tonight we welcome back and induct into the
Forever R’s former manager Neil Warnock,
in recognition of his time at the club and his
achievements while he was here. Neil has had an
outstanding managerial career over many years
and his successes with the clubs he has been at
are there for everyone to see.
Of course, Neil was in charge here at QPR and
guided us to promotion to the Premier League
as champions in the 2010/11 season. That was a
really good team with some outstanding players
and characters throughout, which Neil was able
to mould into what he wanted and give Rangers
fans some great memories. We hope Neil enjoys
his evening back here at Loftus Road and I am
sure he will get a fantastic reception from our fans
when he comes onto the pitch at half-time. Neil
also enjoyed success and promotion with tonight’s
opponents Cardiff, so no doubt their fans will give
him a nice reception as well.
Welcome back Neil.
Tonight we as a club are once again delighted to
support the Rainbow Laces campaign, which aims
to ensure football is a sport for everyone and a place
where everyone feels welcome. Much has been
done in recent years to increase LGBTQ+ inclusion
in football – but there is still much that remains to be
done and Rainbow Laces helps to raise awareness
and educate everyone on these important issues,
both in sport and society as a whole.
Thank you once again for the incredible support
you are giving to the team, both at home and away
matches. Let’s get behind Mick and the team once
again tonight as we try to gain another valuable
three points. Be loud and be proud of who we are
– We are QPR.
Andy
Enjoy the game. Come on you R’s!
Cardiff City
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
CONSISTENCY has
proved something of
a problem for Cardiff
ever since the opening
day of the season, when
an eye-catching victory
against Norwich hinted
at a push towards the top
end of the table.
So far, the Bluebirds have
struggled to string results
together despite a general
upturn in form since
the club ended Steve
Morison’s 11-month
tenure at the Cardiff City
Stadium in September.
After finishing in 18th
place last season,
Cardiff recruited heavily
during the summer, with
established Championship
players like Callum
Robinson, Mahlon Romeo,
Andy Rinomhota and
Callum O’Dowda all
heading for South Wales.
Yet a stuttering start to the
campaign leaves the team
in lower mid-table ahead
of tonight’s game, with
a sequence of just one
success in seven games
– along with a dearth
of goals – prompting
Morison’s departure.
Former Bluebirds skipper
Mark Hudson was asked
to take temporary charge
and the players responded
to his appointment
immediately by battling to
a 1-1 draw in their home
clash with Burnley.
Cardiff followed that up by
registering back-to-back
victories for the first time
this season, building on
a single-goal win against
Blackburn with a 3-1
triumph away to Wigan
four days later.
Their undefeated record
under Hudson came to
an end in controversial
circumstances last
weekend, with an apparent
equaliser by Robinson
chalked off as they went
down 1-0 at home to
Coventry.
The Gaffer
Former Bluebirds defender
Mark Hudson was handed
the reins on a temporary
basis last month, stepping
up from his role as first-team
coach after the departure of
Steve Morison.
The 40-year-old was a firm
favourite among Cardiff fans
during his five years as a player
in South Wales, captaining the
side throughout that period
and winning the Championship
title in 2013.
Hudson began his playing
career at Fulham, but was
unable to break into the first
team and flourished on loan
at Oldham before moving
to Crystal Palace, where he
scored seven times in 122
appearances.
After a single season at
Charlton, Hudson signed for
Cardiff and featured in the
club’s first League Cup final
appearance in 2012, when they
lost to Liverpool on penalties,
as well as the following year’s
promotion success.
Finishing his playing career
with a three-year stint at
Huddersfield, he took over as
coach of the Terriers’ Under-23
side in 2018 and served twice
as caretaker manager before
returning to Cardiff just under
international Callum
Robinson joined the
Bluebirds at the end of the
summer transfer window,
having netted 17 goals in 89
appearances for West Brom.
The 27-year-old initially came
through the ranks at Aston
Villa, making his senior debut
at the age of 18 before joining
Preston on loan during the
2014/15 campaign.
After a short-lived loan
following season, Robinson
returned to Preston and
eventually signed a permanent
deal at Deepdale, helping the
club to build on promotion back
to the second tier.
The striker’s most prolific
season for Preston came
in 2018/19, with 13 goals
convincing Sheffield United to
sign him that summer, but he
found the net just twice in his
Blades career.
Having originally moved to
West Brom on loan in January
2020, Robinson – who has
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 2
CARDIFF CITY 0
SATURDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 1981
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
SIMON STAINROD swivelled in mid-air to score with
a brilliant bicycle kick that sealed this QPR victory.
Stainrod had already given Rangers the lead in the
54th minute and added his audacious second at
the Loft End five minutes later. Tony Sealy crossed
from the left, Mike Flanagan headed back at the far
post and the ball dropped behind Stainrod, who was
standing with his back to goal near the penalty spot.
With mind-blowing agility, Stainrod launched
himself six feet above our Omniturf plastic pitch to
perform a stunning scissor-kick that exploded into
the top right -and corner of the net.
R’s boss Terry Venables said afterwards: “We get a
lot of criticism about our artificial playing surface,
but no one can complain about Stainrod’s goal as
the ball was in the air and not on the pitch!”
Reflecting on that game nearly 41 years ago, Stainrod
said: “I probably scored half a dozen overhead kicks in
my career, but that was my most satisfying as QPR are
my favourite club that I played for.
“Mike Flanagan nodded the ball behind me, but
he had great awareness on the pitch so he knew I
might be able to do something and I managed to
get a decent strike on it. To grab a goal like that
was really pleasing.
“I had a lovely rapport with the fans at Loftus Road
and we just used to have a real hoot. It was all a
dream come true for me with the R’s.”
INTERVIEW: TONY INCENZO
IT’S NOW 30 YEARS SINCE ONE OF
FOOTBALL – THE LAUNCH OF THE
PREMIER LEAGUE.
1992/93 campaign, finishing in fifth place as London’s
37

hoops
MAURICE, the first season of the
Premier League was 30 years
ago now – does it only seem like
yesterday?
Yes, 30 years have passed. I didn’t think
it was so much to be honest. But it is a
long, long time ago.
The Premier League launched that
year and there was plenty of publicity
at the time, but did anyone realise how
big it was going to become?
As players, we didn’t really realise what
was going on when it all started. It
was a bit of a strange one as no-one
actually said anything to us. All we
heard was that the overall name was
being changed from Division One
to the Premier League. That was it!
Then suddenly, there was razzmatazz
before the games with dancing girls on
the pitch. But no one envisaged how
huge the Premier League was going to
become or how large players’ wages
would grow. I can hardly believe how
much money is being splashed about
nowadays. When we were playing, you
didn’t even think about how much you
were earning. Things have changed so
much for modern footballers.
Looking back to that time, QPR could
compete with the very best clubs in
the country…
Yes, we had a great side at Loftus Road.
People like Les Ferdinand, Clive Wilson,
“His aerial prowess,
his goalscoring, his
pace and his power
made him a magnificent
striker. He fully
deserved his place in
the England squad. ”
Andy Sinton, big Alan McDonald and Ray
Wilkins were fantastic footballers.
We also finished as top London club,
which was a meaningful milestone
back then…
You look at the sides we were
competing against. Chelsea, Arsenal,
Tottenham – big teams with big names.
But little old QPR was a fabulous family
club and we went on to nick fifth place
in 1992/93.
You made your first-team debut for
QPR in February that season away to
Ipswich Town. What do you remember
of the occasion?
I had originally signed from Crewe
Alexandra but it took me four seasons
to get into the R’s first team. Before the
Ipswich game, we stayed at a hotel and
QPR boss Gerry Francis called me over
for a chat. He said: “I will start you!” So
I replied: “I haven’t got a problem with
that.” And Gerry replied: “You shouldn’t
have a problem with that. Just go out
and enjoy yourself.” I had been given my
chance because of a couple of injuries
and I was excited to make my debut. I
did enjoy it and it ended 1-1, with Devon
White scoring for Rangers.
After that, you had a good run of
games for us through March…
Right: Maurice
regularly for
QPR during
the latter
half of the
inaugural
Francis gave
Doyle his firstteam
away to Ipswich
I can recall a 3-1 home victory over
Norwich City where Les Ferdinand
hit two amazing goals. I think I had a
half-decent game in that one. The next
fixture was away to Liverpool, probably
the biggest match I ever played in. I am
from the north-west of England and I
have always been a Liverpool fan so to
line up against Ian Rush, John Barnes
and people like that was a dream made
in heaven. I touched the famous “This
Is Anfield” sign in the players’ tunnel
before the kick-off. Then to go out
there on that pitch was something really
special for me personally. But at the end
of the day, I was still playing for my team,
so I had to give it my all. We lost 1-0 and
I can remember Tony Roberts saving a
couple of penalties for us on the night.
Les Ferdinand was the focal point of
our attacks and he scored 20 goals for
Rangers that season in the Premier
League. How good was ‘Sir Les’?
Oh, he was quality. His aerial prowess,
his goalscoring, his pace and his power
made him a magnificent striker. He
fully deserved his place in the England
squad. All of the QPR fans were very
sorry to see him go when he moved on
to Newcastle United.
We had Ray Wilkins pulling all the
strings in midfield. He was another
outstanding player…
An absolute ‘baller’ for me. Players at
that time learned so much from him.
He was not just great as a footballer but
also as a man. When Ray arrived at the
training ground each day, the first thing
Above: Doyle
speaks warmly
of his former
R’s captain, the
late Ray Wilkins
he would do was go up to the young
apprentices who were sorting the kit
out. A lot of them were staying in digs
so Ray would make sure they were OK
with their living arrangements. He didn’t
have to do that. I had a lot of respect for
Ray and he is sadly missed now.
What was Gerry Francis like as
manager of the R’s?
He was unlucky not to be appointed
to the England job at one point. I
believe he was in the final three
applicants but Glenn Hoddle got it in the
end. At QPR, Gerry was always honest
with everyone and a good tactician. The
only downfall was all the running he used
to make us do at the training ground on
a Tuesday if we didn’t have a midweek
game! But overall, he was a very good
manager and a top man.
What are you up to nowadays?
I am manager of a football team in the
West Cheshire League called Sutton
Athletic. My two sons, Calum and Conor,
play in the side. In fact, I was playing
myself until this season but I am 52 now
and my legs are giving way a little bit! So
I have left it to the younger ones and I
have taken on the managerial role.
Do you still keep an eye on events
here at QPR?
Yeah, of course. My very best memories
in football were at QPR and I made
some lifelong friends. I still chat to Tony
Roberts and Robbie Herrera. I had some
lovely times at Loftus Road.
JOE PARADISO, A QPR FAN FROM MISSISSAUGA,
CANADA, ENDED UP WITH AN UNEXPECTED SOUVENIR
WHEN HE VISITED LOFTUS ROAD BACK IN 1988.
Joe was taken on a tour of
the stadium by the legendary
Tony Ingham, who also gave
him two tickets for Rangers’
upcoming game against
Liverpool and arranged for kit
man Ron Berry to take him to
watch training.
“When I arrived at the training
ground, I met Trevor Francis
over a cup of tea and we
started a conversation,” Joe
recalled. “He was very gracious
with his time and friendliness.
“We started talking about the
match and he understood
tickets were sold out. I said I
had an extra ticket and could
offer it to him for his friend. I
light-heartedly requested his
match shirt in exchange and he
agreed.
“After the match, I was invited
to the first team’s lounge and
noticed Trevor forgot the shirt.
He asked Ron to get one from
the kit room and he came back
with a previously used shirt,
with number 13 on the back.
“What happened during my visit
says a lot about QPR and how
they treat their fans like family.
What a fantastic club!”
Park Rangers travel the four
tonight, having lost only once
in a run of 23 league matches.
Their lone defeat – against
Hull at Boothferry Park by
since former Fulham forward
Rodney Marsh left to join
Manchester City last March.
Now the new-look Rangers
are making a strong bid for
promotion.
‘Last season they won three
points from us. But having won
in the season, they could not
fell victims to two magnificent
HEROES
RODNEY MARSH VS
BOLTON WANDERERS
SATURDAY 3RD APRIL 1971
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
RODNEY MARSH stole the show as Queens
Park Rangers beat Bolton 4-0 at Loftus
Road.
In a News of the World match report entitled
“MARSH – TOP OF THE BILL”, Mervyn Robilliard
wrote: “Rangers wizard Rodney Marsh scored a
brilliant hat-trick, might have had at least two more,
and set up the fourth for Mick Leach. It was the
greatest one-man show I have seen this season.
46 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
“Marsh exploded into action after 35 minutes
when he back-headed a free-kick past (Bolton
goalkeeper) Peter Clarke. Twenty-seven minutes
later he was brought down and scored from the
penalty. He went on to head his 20th goal of the
season, then laid one on for Leach three minutes
from time.”
Meanwhile, Norman Dixon wrote in the Daily
Express newspaper: “Rodney Marsh pulled out
one of his vintage hat-tricks and ironically laid it
before Queens Park Rangers’ lowest gate since
they left the Third Division – 8,613. Perhaps the
fans who missed the 4-0 slaughter of Bolton
were watching TV, but as someone said: ‘Rodney
in that form could have won the (Grand) National
carrying top weight.’ ”
Pat Collins of The People newspaper wrote:
“It wasn’t much of a match; more a one-man
show by R. Marsh, Esq., Soccer Entertainer
Extraordinary.”
Other newspaper had headlines which read: “It’s
that man Marsh again” (London Evening News)
and “Hail Rodney! (Willesden & Brent Chronicle).
Born in Hatfield on 11th October 1944, Marsh
signed for QPR from Fulham in March 1966 for
£15,000. He made 242 appearances for the R’s
and scored 134 times, including 44 in 1966/67,
which is our all-time club record for the most
goals by one player in a season. Marsh made the
number 10 hooped shirt famous and won the
first of his nine England caps as a Rangers man.
INTERVIEW: LENNIE HARVEY
Kieran Petrie
Position: Winger or striker
From: Essex
Joined QPR: Age 17
Pre-Match Meal: Eggs and beans if it’s a morning
kick-off, pasta if it’s later
Nickname: KP
Instagram: @kieranpetrie_11
Pre-Match Song: My Dawg – Lil Baby
How did you get scouted?
I came on trial around March of this year and after
a few weeks QPR said they wanted to sign me.
What are your strengths as a player and what
do you need to work on?
My strengths are definitely 1v1 scenarios and my
creativity/end product. But I would say I’ve got to
work on the defensive side of my game a bit more!
What’s the highlight of your career so far?
Probably signing a professional contract for
QPR at 17.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
My favourite player right now, who I play similarly
to, is Ousmane Dembele. I just love how he’s
so direct in 1v1s and he is good with both feet,
which makes him unpredictable. My inspiration
though is definitely Neymar. From a young
age, most kids dream of playing with Neymar’s
confidence.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Playing in the Premier League and competing in
the Champions League.
Which of your team-mates do you see as a
future coach or manager?
Definitely Charlie McDonald, we call him Uncle Chaz
and he’s got so much knowledge of the game.
Which stadium in the world would you most like
to play in and why?
I would love to play at Anfield, because I support
Liverpool and the atmosphere there is the best
in the world.
Who’s had the greatest influence on your
career so far and why?
My parents, as they’ve helped with most of my
decisions and inevitable setbacks. They’ve also
helped me to stay focused and revitalise my career.
SUBSTITUTE Emilia Nygaard-Parsons
smashed a hat-trick in just three minutes
as Rangers romped to an emphatic victory
against their west London rivals.
Nygaard-Parsons rounded off the rout
late on after goals from Jo Blodgett, Laura
Hennessy, Melanie Hall, Kasha Petit, Nicole
Leys and Erin Pope had already put the result
well beyond doubt.
Blodgett latched onto a loose ball to put the R’s
ahead before Hennessy fired home a second
from the edge of the box soon afterwards.
Midfielder Hennessy was also involved as
Steve Quashie’s side went 3-0 up, setting up
Hall to slot home and Petit found the target
from close range to give the visitors a fourgoal
lead at half-time.
Full-back Leys netted her first goal for the
club after the break and Pope made it 6-0
with an impressive free-kick before Nygaard-
Parsons’s quickfire treble wrapped up a
resounding victory.
‘R’ GENERATION WRITER ALEX BULLAMORE
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS-ON IN W12
Recently, I was invited on BBC Radio
London to talk about QPR. Specifically,
to answer the question ‘is something
happening at QPR?’
The short answer is: I really bloody hope so,
and I think I conveyed that quite nicely. I’ve
never been one to go over the top, especially
when it comes to QPR – I understand where
QPR sit in the grand scheme of things.
Majority of the time we are incredibly
frustrating and probably bad at football. So,
when I say this team are an incredibly talented
bunch of lads who are bringing me immense
joy, I hope again that you realise how highly I
rate them.
For the majority of last season, the team
were again brilliant, and some of my best
experiences from my relatively short time as
a QPR fan was last season. I really hope that
everything that came before in the seasons
under Mark Warburton isn’t forgotten,
because the foundations of what is to come
were built then. Obviously the season ended
in a fashion none of us wanted but I feel it
reinforces my belief that right now, when
we’re in incredible form, us fans should be
enjoying this like there’s no tomorrow.
I hope this year doesn’t end like last season.
For the record I think we’re better set up and
stronger in the majority of positions than last
year, hopefully that means a better finish.
We just need to really enjoy this and I feel
energised to go to every possible game I can
get to. I want to see the numerous talents we
have execute the well-laid plans designed by
Mick Beale and his coaches. I want to see the
best partnership in football, Ilias Chair and
Chris Willock, combine with the greatest of
ease to create footballing poetry and win us
games of football.
It is this desire to witness every minute
possible of QPR’s season that has led me to
going without my Dad and instead going with
my friends when he’s not available. They’ve
gone to Coventry, Cardiff and now Bristol
City. One of my mates really doesn’t like
football at all, the fact I’ve convinced him to
go to not one but two games is a big win, I
think. It should say a lot that he turned around
to me and said: “Alex, it was a great idea to
do this” and yes it was a great idea. He gets it
now, he’s experienced how fun it can be.
So basically, I love this – times like these are
why supporting a club like QPR is so great.
Most of the time supporting QPR is distinctly
average and, despite that, we soldier on,
buying the shirts, the season tickets and train
tickets to follow the team around the country.
It makes moments like this all the sweeter
but, knowing QPR, we’ll go and lose the next
three games to bring us back to reality!
THE W12 CLUB
THE W12 Club is located
behind the upper concourse in
the South Africa Road Stand
and used to be called The Tony
Ingham Suite.
The room was fully refurbished
just over a decade ago. It is
a well-appointed restaurant
which provides a vibrant and
relaxing atmosphere to enjoy
matchdays.
Catering for up to 174 people
per game, guests arrive via the
main reception on South Africa
Road. They then proceed to the
W12 on the first floor via the
stairs or lift.
A three-course meal
commences two hours before
kick-off. A half bottle of wine
per person is included in the
package plus a complimentary
match programme.
There is always a QPR playing
legend such as Wayne Fereday
in attendance to greet diners
and reminisce about previous
games. Other past players
being inducted into Forever R’s
are also entertained in the W12,
along with their families.
Guests watch the match from
padded seats on the halfway
line. There are refreshments
back in the W12 at half-time
and full-time, with a bar that is
open until an hour after the final
whistle.
GREEN MEANS GOALS IN PLANET LEAGUE CUP
QPR in the Community Trust are Taking part
in the 2022 Planet League Cup, which brings
together both professional and grassroots
clubs to engage fans on climate action.
The tournament, which is backed by 76
professional clubs, 15 county FAs and hundreds
of schools around the country, is a unique, fiveweek
sustainability event.
Fans score goals for their club by completing
green activities like having a meat-free meal,
using the car less and filling up reusable bottles
with tap water.
Each week focuses on a particular theme, such as
energy, food or travel, and the club whose fans take
the most action will win the Planet League Cup.
As well as taking the glory, the fan who scores
the most goals will win a holiday in the UK.
Planet League Cup
• Five-week climate action tournament between
the fans of 76 professional football clubs and
their associated club community organisations
• Fifteen county FAs are helping hundreds of
schools and grassroots football clubs to take part
• RSPB, the Rainforest Trust UK, Veganuary,
Her Game Too and Women in Football are
also partnering
• There is Key Stage 1, 2 & 3 classroom
content for teachers and a school
tournament running alongside the cup
Football fans taking part in the Planet League Cup
can choose from dozens of environmentallyfriendly
actions in order to score goals.
These will include unplugging your appliances
when they aren’t in use, making the best of
your food before it’s too late with an ‘eat-mefirst’
box, taking cooler and shorter showers
and using public transport.
The ‘Layer Challenge’ is a fun Planet League
Cup hero activity with a serious message of
putting on more layers of clothing instead of
putting on the heating – to save energy but also
to save money, given the rise in energy prices.
The Planet League Cup Layer Challenge
sees footballers putting on as many layers of
clothing as possible in 30 seconds.
The Planet League’s unique technology
platform includes a virtual assistant referee
(VAR) system, so actions taken by fans are
proven through photographs that are uploaded
to the website and checked. To date, over
77,000 verified actions have been taken by fans.
Media Voice
JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER AIDAN MAGEE
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN
I’m not normally one for superstitions.
However, I did notice that I’d watched three
consecutive QPR games wearing this
season’s home shirt, which yielded wins over
Bristol City, Sheffield United and Reading.
I didn’t finish work until midday on the day
of the Luton game, but managed to catch a
disappointing second half at home.
Sadly, when I arrived back in Bromley, I
realised my shirt was in the washing machine
and in an unwearable state.
In light of this, defeat was perhaps inevitable.
I will try and wear it under my sweater for
tonight’s visit of Cardiff.
Rangers have really got their act together
since I last wrote – putting some early season
consistency behind them to stake a claim for
a play-off place.
Mick Beale has grown into the role and
the job he’s doing has attracted admiring
glances from the Premier League.
My former Sky colleague Kaveh Solhekol
told me his central London tailor grew up
with Mick in Bromley and said he was destined
for success. Coming from a man who relies
on precision, dexterity and imagination
to make his living – not to mention literally
having to ‘cut his cloth’ – that’s a
glowing endorsement.
It seems a while ago since I took my guests
Andy Keywood, Joanna Franklin and my
brother Liam to Millwall.
I presented the Lions’ end of season awards
last May. Part of my payment package was
four seats in the 1885 Club Platinum suite for
the visit of QPR. Thankfully, the players did
the business on the night at a ground where
we’d won just once since the stadium was
built way back in 1993.
Enjoy tonight, everyone.
Ashville is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground to in house development and government
infrastructure projects. Ashville encompasses every element in
construction and is a fundamental part of all supply chains.
We're proud to have over 15 years' experience within the industry, which in
turn allows us to provide a responsive and reliable service for each of our
customers. Our team and process are completely in-house which allows us
to have control from initial concept to completion.
