challenging times.
The Kawartha Family Business Group is in its 16th year as a
from each other and the speakers at their meetings where
they help family businesses connect, support, and inspire
each other. At their upcoming meeting on November 21
The future of Peterborough and the Kawarthas looks
bright as the region continues to attract, retain and
Kawartha Family Business Group
16 Years Offering Support for Family Businesses
By Joanne Culley
Sharon Walker, General Manager at Jo Anne’s Place Health Foods, with a few
members of her team enjoying the company of Chris Neal, Chief Snacking Officer, Neal Brothers Foods.
Family businesses large and small across the
region continue to contribute significantly to
the local economy. For 16 years, the Kawartha
Family Business Group has been bringing family
businesses together to help them connect, support, inspire
and learn from each other.
Last season was a mix of in-person and virtual meetings,
beginning with the meeting in September of 2021 at
Elmhirst’s Resort on Rice Lake, according to Co-executive
Directors of the Kawartha Family Business Group (KFBG)
Jhane Brasier and Michelle O’Neill.
“Elmhirst’s Resort has been a long-time member and
supporter, so it was fitting to open our year there,” says
O’Neill. “We were all saddened last February to learn of
the death of Stephen Elmhirst, who was such a stalwart
figure in his family’s business, in the Kawartha Family
Business Group, and in our community at large. His death
sent ripples of shock through the community and brought
home first-hand the realities facing family businesses.”
KFBG had many successful meetings last year. At their
March meeting, a panel of Junior Achievement Hall of
Fame Inductees, Bill Lockington of LLF Lawyers, Monika
Carmichael of Trent Valley Honda, Alan Hill of Domino’s
Pizza and Ian Scates of Central Smith Creamery had a
lively discussion about leadership and what it means to
their family businesses and the community.
At their April 2022 meeting, Chris Neal spoke about how
he and his brother Peter started Neal Brothers Foods 30
years ago by making croutons in their mother’s kitchen.
The company has now grown to produce an extensive line
of healthy foods such as tortillas, salsas and kettle chips.
During his talk, he wove in key learnings about family
business and succession planning, which could include
selling the business to an outside buyer, as opposed to
leaving it to the next generation. He also talked about
the importance of ensuring that all employees feel they
are part of the family business, with special recognition
for long-term employees.
O’Neill says that they are happy that their current
sponsors, who have been on board for many years, will
continue into the coming season. Nexicom, Part Time
CFO Services, BDO, Park Place Financial, LLF Lawyers
and RBC will be joined by new sponsor the Business
Development Bank of Canada.
“Part Time CFO Services values its relationship with
KFBG, its members and other sponsors as it is a unique
collaboration of our local business community that is
beneficial in sharing best practices for everyone,” says
Darryl Goodall, CFO, CPA, CMA, President, Part Time
CFO Services, Premier Sponsor. “KFBG provides a
supportive atmosphere, both on the traditional aspects
businesses face along with the human elements.”
“An example of growth in our membership is Jo Anne’s
Place Health Foods. They recently opened a second ’76
Sips Café at Trent University’s Athletic Centre. The café
offers healthy and delicious menu items including salads,
baked goods, grab-and-go meals, coffee, smoothies and
more,” says Brasier.
O’Neill and Brasier are excited about the 2022-23 season.
Their first meeting took place at Chemong Lodge on
October 3 where business advisors shared their insights
and experience about the topic of attracting and retaining
talent during what many have themed the “Great
Migration.” Topics included leveraging payroll benefits,
managing inflationary pressures and implementing the
recent privacy and right to disconnect legislation.
The theme of the upcoming November 21 meeting will be
sustainability of the environment, and specifically how
family businesses can be stewards of the environment and
how to respond to the new rules around single use plastic.
KFBG meetings generally take place five times a year on
Mondays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., usually opening
with a Family Business Spotlight when a member talks
about their business and the successes and challenges
they’re facing, which sparks discussion and support
among other members. Meetings in the new year will take
place on January 16, March 6, and April 24 to complete
their 2022/2023 programming calendar.
For more information, or to become a member, please
visit @KawarthaFamilyBusinessGroup on Facebook or
call either of the Co-executive Directors, Jhane Brasier,
705-875-0602 or Michelle O’Neill, 705-741-9819. KFBG
membership extends to all family members and key
employees.
Shop The Lake Now Open Year-Round
By Joanne Culley
Niki Pulchinski has noticed that the trend of
outdoor entertaining which started during the
pandemic is continuing beyond the summer
months.
“People have really embraced outdoor entertaining all
year round,” says Niki, who co-owns Shop The Lake with
her husband Jason Pulchinski. “Even when the nights
are chilly, it’s nice to sit outside around a fire, feeling
cozy with blankets and warm drinks.”
She says that at Shop The Lake, they’re making it easy
for people to entertain outside, with dining sets, fire tables,
sectionals, ottomans, lounge and club chairs, and more. Much
of the furniture is from Ratana, a popular Canadian brand.
“We stock several shade options including market and
cantilever umbrellas in many sizes and colours as well
as fantastic pergolas.” she says.
In the past, Shop The Lake has closed down for the winter,
but will remain open year round.
Niki notes that they are now stocking items that are
suitable in the cooler months, such as mitts, hats, throws
and plush robes, along with coolers, thermoses, beer
can cozies and more from Chilly Moose, a Canadian
company. All for Knot Rope Weaving Inc. from Nova
Scotia creates a unique line of hand-crafted doormats
made from lobster fishing line, which she says have been
flying off the shelf. She says that all of these items would
make great Christmas gifts.
In terms of a family business, Jason and Niki’s skillsets
complement each other.
“Niki is the CFO and takes care of administration and
finances, while I handle the operations and HR,” says
Jason. “And in the summers two of our children, Laura
and Evan, help us in the Waterfront Recreation Specialists
division.”
The couple’s affiliated company, At The Lake Distributing
Incorporated, is in its 15th year as a wholesale distributor
of water-related recreational products, shipping to dealers
such as marinas and sporting goods retailers across
Canada.
“Locally, we supply Cottage Toys with recreational
products such as kayaks, paddleboards, inflatable water
toys, water skis and lifejackets, and we supply Home
Hardware, Timbermart and Castle Building Centres with
boat lifts, docks and dock accessories,” says Jason.
Shop the Lake is located at 1525 Chemong Rd. in Selwyn.
For more information, please call 705-876-9707 or visit
www.shopthelake.ca. They are open Monday to Friday,
new services are now available as both companies pride
themselves as bespoke providers to best meet emerging
client needs.
to offer this approach to employee benefit clients in Belleville
and Kingston through this expansion of our firm
Elmhirst’s Resort - Teambuilding and
Special Events on the Shores of Rice Lake
After two years of working remotely, many
businesses and organizations are looking to
rebuild their teams and share their knowledge
with their employees and colleagues. There’s
no better way to do so than by holding a retreat in a
beautiful waterfront setting on the shores of Rice
Lake, according to Greg Elmhirst, General Manager,
Elmhirst’s Resort.
The expert coordinators on staff can help you plan and
execute a meeting, conference, fundraiser, gala or other
special event, with a range of conference packages that
include three meals a day, along with two breaks, and
onsite accommodation.
There are a variety of meeting facilities to choose from.
The Enterprise Room can accommodate 120 people theatre
style, 60 people in half rounds, and 35 people in
U-shapes. It can be divided in two for smaller breakout
sessions. Located on the waterfront, this room opens to
the boardwalk with outdoor seating and a waterfront
trail. The foyer can be set up as a registration area.
The Conservatory Room can accommodate 80 people
theatre style, 30 people in half rounds and 25 people
in U-shapes. This room opens to a garden with picnic
tables and access to the greenhouse for breakout sessions.
The Boardroom is an ideal informal setting for
smaller groups.
The Elmhirst team can develop a personalized team building
itinerary for any group. “We have a range of lively team
building challenges and experiences for corporate guests
that can be built into any agenda – indoor activities such as
wine tasting, cooking classes, and yoga along with outdoor
activities such as lumberjack competitions,” he continues.
The emphasis is on local at Elmhirst’s.
“On our 240 acres beside Rice Lake, we raise beef, ducks,
and turkeys, and vegetables. Whatever we don’t grow,
we source locally,” he says. “We offer an all-Ontario wine
cellar, and six taps of draft beer from microbreweries.
Our Rice Lake Original Dry Cider on tap is made from
the apples grown on our property.”
Elmhirst says that they will continue with some of the
changes they made during the pandemic, such as preordering
food for breaks and meals to reduce waste.
“If guests or delegates choose not to have a coffee break,
we make a financial contribution to One Roof, a local shelter,”
he says. “We’ve also made upgrades to the WIFI to
better accommodate hybrid meetings, where some attend
in-person and some virtually.”
Valuing the Employees at
D. M. Wills Associates Ltd.
Michael Lang, President of D. M. Wills
Associates, says that the company has
learned a lot about themselves through the
last two-and-half years of the pandemic,
in particular, the continued importance of their
approximately 90 employees.
“We learned that we’re stronger together, and that the
collaborative work we do and the work culture we value
needs face time,” says Lang. “We also recognize the importance
of flexibility for our team members and have
adapted to increase flexibility for our team members with
a blend of remote and in-person work.”
Recruiting and retention of their employees is one of
their top focuses.
“We want to attract the top talent in our area and showcase
them on the provincial stage,” he continues.
To that end, Lang says the company has established the
D.M. Wills Associates Award which is a bursary given
annually at each local high school to a graduating student
who has gone above and beyond in giving back to
the community, and will be attending a post secondary
institution in the fall in an Engineering, Environmental
or Land Use Planning program.
The team at D.M. Wills continues to nurture strong partnerships
with the community as volunteers and supporters
of local charitable organizations such as Habitat for
Humanity. This year the company received the Platinum
award at Community Votes Peterborough for the second
By Joanne Culley
LLF Lawyers – Founders of the
Kawartha Family Business Group
Bill Lockington is not only a founding partner
of LLF Lawyers, a full-service law firm where
he provides his clients with the benefit of over
40 years of legal experience, but he is also a
founding member of the Kawartha Family Business Group.
He recently answered a few questions about his involvement
with the group.
What made you decide that Peterborough needed
the Kawartha Family Business Group?
“Early in my practice I became involved with other professionals
such as insurance agents, accountants and
bankers, in advising family businesses in the area,” he
says. “As that part of our practice grew, I started to specialize
in the area and became involved as a member of
the Family Firm Institute in Boston, an international
educational forum for family business advisors. A market
study of the geographic area bounded by Bancroft, Belleville,
Lindsay and Peterborough revealed there were
over 400 long-standing significant family businesses in
that area. Regrettably, these businesses did not have access
to local resources where they could convene with a
peer-like group to share experiences of the uniqueness of
the Family Business. As sponsoring partners, we decided
we could fill that gap by providing educational sessions,
topical speakers, and related presentations in a social
collegial setting.
Can you give some examples of KFBG events
where LLF Lawyers took part in the program?
“Over the years LLF Lawyers have been involved as panellists,
advisors and participants in many of the KFBG
events,” he says. “I’m involved with Community Foundation
of Peterborough, and I know that philanthropy
is a major part of many family businesses. We helped
to integrate member’s philanthropic activities into their
business and strategic plans.”
Lockington says they have also presented on many practical
concerns, citing when marijuana became legal as an
example and family businesses had questions about the
impact on workplace and HR policies.
“Among other topics we have advised, are “Establishing
Family Trusts”; Seeing Generational Issues; and Succession
Planning, (always a sensitive area), together with
other like issues of concern,” he says.
We know that your law firm works with family
businesses of all sizes on succession planning.
What quick words of advice would you give a
family business when it comes to succession
planning?
“Considering passing on the business to the next generation?
My advice is to start early, be patient, and find
a champion in the family to drive the process,”
he says. “Get financial advisors engaged to participate
in the process, along with all of the family advisors, and
finally, CELEBRATE when it’s done!”
Have you seen the family business dynamic
change over the past three years? Are there any
trends or areas of concern that family businesses
should be aware of?
“I think it’s important for family business members, as
employees, to educate themselves by working for someone
else; get a different perspective which can help bring
different skills when you go back to your own family
business,” he says. “It’s important, as a family member,
to educate yourself in the roles of Shareholder, Director,
Employee and in all roles, determine what works
and doesn’t.”
Family business is now regarded as a defined business
sector, evidenced by many Canadian universities now
having faculties and courses specializing in family business.
Why should family businesses join the KFBG?
“For one, we’re a group of good people, and we have
Central Smith Creamery and Kawartha Dairy as members.
They sometimes bring ice cream, so you can’t beat
that,” he laughs. “The group has all the benefits of a peer
network, with excellent educational events, in a collegial
SHEPHERD ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
Environmentally Friendly Septic
Systems for Your Cottage or Home
“We can recommend a system that will
work for you and handle the design,
approvals, and installation from start
to finish, right to the grown grass.”
Caring for the environment and leaving a small footprint
are priorities at Shepherd Environmental Services.
“As a fourth generation family business, founded by my
grandfather George Shepherd, we understand the importance
of sustainability of systems into the future,” says
Mike Shepherd, owner.
Shepherd Environmental Services installs, services and
maintains septic and holding tank systems for residential
and commercial applications within the City of Kawartha
Lakes, as well as providing portable toilet rentals. Committed
to quality work and the environment, they have
more than 60 years of experience in the septic business
with the knowledge and expertise to handle all of your
septic needs. With their acquisition of French Septic
Pumping their services have now expanded to include
all of Haliburton County.
The company installs both conventional and high quality,
environmentally friendly, tertiary septic systems where
the effluent from the systems is treated before going into
the soil so that ground water is not affected. Brand products
that they work with include Waterloo Biofilter and
Eljen systems. The Waterloo Bio-filter now comes with
a 20 year guarantee for the filter media. All products
meet the latest environmental standards and the Ontario
Building Code requirements for septic systems.
“We will come to your cottage or home and determine
the best design for your property,” says Mike Shepherd,
owner. “Sometimes space is tight, or there is high ground
water or bedrock. We can recommend a system that will
work for you and handle the design, approvals, and installation
from start to finish, right to the grown grass.”
Shepherd recommends regular cleaning of the
effluent filters and pumping out the septic tank every
three years. With regular maintenance and pumping
Shepherd says your sewage system should have a long
life span. If you are selling your home or cottage Shepherd
recommends that you have your septic system pumped
and inspected by one of their technicians prior to listing
the property. This can save a seller from having to
make quick expensive decisions if the home inspector
finds a problem.
Shepherd Environmental Services provides portable and
accessible toilet rentals. Hand sanitizers are provided in
all toilets and wedding trailer. The company provides
clean up-to-date units for all events and occasions such
as weddings, special events, construction projects, golf
tournaments, and sporting events. Rentals can be arranged
on a weekend, weekly or monthly basis.
Shepherd Environmental Services also provides a full
excavation service including demolition, lot clearing and
building excavation. The company services the areas of
the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County.
Kloosterman General Contractors Ltd.
Continues to Build into the Future
Richard, John and Dan Kloosterman continue
to operate a family company that was started
by Richard’s father John over 40 years ago.
John and Dan are the third generation to be
involved in the business. You’ve probably seen some
of their buildings – Mastermind Toys, Firehouse Subs
and Trans Canada Nissan on Lansdowne Street and
the 50,000 sq. ft. Kingdon Timber Mart in Lakefield.
The company specializes in commercial, industrial and
residential construction.
Rich Kloosterman says that they have had a very busy
year, with the Stella-Jones lumber plant expansion on
Lansdowne Street East, the new three-storey medical
clinic at the corner of George and Dalhousie Streets, and
the construction of an architecturally significant home,
along with other residential and commercial projects.
“We are working with the architectural firm AGATHOM
on a stunning country home south of here,” says Rich
Kloosterman, president. “With a shell of concrete, and
using building materials of steel and glass, this striking
home is being constructed into the side of a hill, with
one side open to capture the magnificent views of the
surrounding countryside. The building is being designed
and built to have minimal impact on the landscape. This
project is really showcasing the resiliency and flexibility
of our team, that we can handle a building of this size,
shape and complexity.”
Rich credits his sons Dan and John, project managers
and site supervisors, with the company’s continuing
success.
“My sons and I are a strong team who are dedicated to
our clients,” continues Rich. “We’re in it for the long term
and pride ourselves on our close attention to details. We
have a lot of repeat business because of our commitment
to quality and seeing a project through from beginning
to end and beyond.”
For over 20 years, Kloosterman General Contracting has
been serving Peterborough and the Kawarthas with high
quality residential, commercial and industrial construction.
Over the years they have established a reputation
for superior buildings, built on time and on budget to
their clients’ satisfaction.
“We use local trades, subtrades and supplies, not like outof-town
contractors, who tend to use their out-of-town
connections,” says Rich. “Over the years, we’ve developed
good relationships with our local trades and suppliers.
When we keep the business here, we are contributing to
a strong community and local economy.”
During construction, Kloosterman employs dozens
of local sub-contractors for excavation, foundations,
structural steel, plumbing, electrical, framing, concrete
finishing, stucco, masonry and more. All of the scaffolding
and heavy equipment are rented from local rental
companies and most of the building materials come from
local retailers.
Kloosterman General Contractors Ltd. is located at 1542
Stewart Line in Cavan, just outside of Peterborough.
Drain Bros. Excavating Celebrates
Over 50 Years in the Kawarthas
Over their 51 years in business, Drain Bros. Excavating
Ltd have built a reputation for providing
the highest quality construction products and
services to communities throughout the Kawarthas
and the surrounding areas, and have become known
for their honesty and integrity, one project at a time.
“Drain Bros. is the largest and best equipped company
to offer high end, custom stone work in the Kawarthas,”
says Mark Geens, General Manager of Aggregate Division.
“Most of the material we use is sourced locally, from quarries
in the Kawarthas. The types of stone include armour
stone and flagstone, which are made from limestone and
Belmont Rose granite, and we can source many others.”
Their custom stone-work products include outdoor/indoor
fireplace mantles, hearths, corbels, coping, sills,
doorway surrounds, outdoor countertops and paneling.
They can also do custom engravings and signage which
are a great way to show someone’s individuality and make
a property feel unique. They perform the full design process
in-house using sophisticated software.
For cottage and homeowners, the company has guillotined
armour stone in a wide variety of sizes for retaining
walls and shoreline support, sawn limestone curbing, and
custom steps. Their jumbo flagstone, which is a custom
natural stone product that is easily installed for patios
and walkways, is extremely popular. It is available in a
few different finishes including sandblasted and flamed.
They also work with cottagers and homeowners to install
new septic systems, to complete site services for new construction
including demolition, excavation, shorelines,
boathouses, landscaping and more.
Over the years, Drain Bros. has specialized in the supply,
delivery and installation of asphalt products, aggregates
and a variety of specialty stones. And they are the go-to
professionals for large-scale land development projects,
structure demolition, site excavation and shoreline stabilization.
They maintain a modern fleet with over 85 dump
trucks and 175 pieces of heavy machinery on worksites
all over the Kawarthas.
The company was founded by brothers Darrell and John
Drain who built roads and septic beds in Kawartha cottage
country. Armed with a single-axle dump truck, a rubber
tire loader and a small bulldozer, the company became
known for their expert service and affordable pricing.
With the addition of their first quarry in 1973, they began
to expand their services to include civil construction
projects. Their first large assignment was Beavermead
Park and Campground in Peterborough.
The Drain Bros. business has grown to include over 20
gravel pits and quarries, a state-of-the-art asphalt plant
and a trap-rock processing plant.
They’ve built a team of close to 400 employees, many of
whom have been with Drain Bros. over the decades. Their
long-time employees include Marie Little who started out
with the company by weighing trucks on the weigh scales.
Her duties have expanded with the growth of the company
and she is now the office manager. Danny Payne started
his career as a truck driver and today he is a project
manager overseeing several projects as well as equipment
and labour allocations. Don Garden started out
as a driver and is now the dispatcher for the company’s
fleet of trucks. Ed Heayn has 40 years behind the steering
wheel of a Drain Bros. green and white tractor trailer.
Drain Bros. head office is located at #25, 11th Line of
Asphodel just east of Norwood. Their general company
phone number is 705-639-2301, 1-877-639-2301, or visit
Proud Group Of Transportation Companies
Family Owned And Operated For 55 Years
For fifty five years, the Paxton group of companies,
owned and founded by Russ Paxton, have been operating
in the Peterborough area, moving clients’
products to points in Ontario and the U.S. These
transportation specialists include Paxton Transport
Ltd., D.C. Foster Courier & Express, Transport Overload
and Pinehill Forwarding Ltd.
“We started out with six trucks, and have grown over
the years to include 100 trailers, 25 tractors, and
about 20 various delivery vehicles,” says Russ.
Originally, the company was a PCV (C) freight carrier
out of Peterborough, with Schneiders and Burns
as two of their main customers. They delivered meat
throughout the area until 1990, until they shifted to
be more of a general freight carrier, and expanded into
the courier business with the acquisition of D.C. Foster
Cartage from Don Foster and added the ANC courier
local franchise. The company now has three divisions:
Paxton Transport Ltd. provides commercial and industrial
service to many points in Ontario and U.S. border
states. They can transport anything from an envelope
to a truckload. Their large fleet of vehicles of all sizes are
equipped to handle your freight transportation needs
quickly, safely and economically. They are affiliated with
a network of transport and courier companies across
North America and can also handle most of your freight
forwarding needs.
D.C. Foster Courier & Express is a complete local courier
service that provides same day service and next
day service within a radius of 160 km. Next day courier
service is available outside our local area to most major
centres in Ontario and the U.S. Call 1-800-461-6600
to arrange for a pick-up or delivery.
Transport Overload, the third company in the Paxton
group, provides mobile storage trailers for those who are
renovating, moving, or expanding. They can supply 40
ft. to 53 ft. storage units for rent by the week, month
or on an annual basis.
“We have come as far as we have over the years thanks
to our dedicated employees,” he says.
KAWARTHA FOOD SHARE
KAWARTHA LAKES FOOD SOURCE
What Can You Do to Help?
Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) and Kawartha Food
Share (KFS) are charitable organizations that rely on donations
and volunteers to achieve our mission. We will gladly
work with the community to help you achieve your giving
goals.
Here are a few tips when considering donating:
1. The gift of your time: volunteering is an important
aspect and greatly extends the work we can accomplish.
There are big and small tasks that can make
all the difference in the community. Contact a food
bank or food security agency that is close to you,
or KFS or KLFS directly for local opportunities.
2. The gift of financial support: when you make a financial
gift, you are supporting KLFS or KFS with the
ability to purchase and transport food. We also have
staff that deliver community programs, organize
fundraising events, and manage volunteers. Equally
as important, we can cover operational costs such as
rent, utilities and insurance. We value your trust
in us to direct as needed.
3. The gift of food: in addition to non-perishables, both
KLFS and KFS can receive fresh donations such as
surplus produce from your garden or frozen foods
from the grocery store. Personal care items such
as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash,
feminine hygiene products and toilet paper are
always in demand. If organizing a neighbourhood
or office food drive, call to find out what our
current needs are.
4. The gift of awareness: food security and poverty are
complex topics. Talking about and sharing credible
information will help give a voice to those experience
food insecurity and initiates the opportunity
for conversations that help create change. Follow,
like and share us on social media.
5. The gift of attendance: purchasing tickets and attending
a fundraising event or open house is both
an entertaining and educational experience while
supporting our worthwhile cause.
Community support is essential to the success of our
organizations. Reach out and ask how you can help,
honour your commitment, learn about our work, and
feel rewarded by helping others. Even the smallest gift
or action can make a huge difference!
The Land Between Blue Lakes Program
What do you mean, The Land Between? If you have not
heard of it, this term refers to a charity that works to
conserve, enhance and celebrate our region- and the term
also refers to the unique landscape that the charity operates
in- and which many associate with Cottage Country.
The Land Between landscape sits between the rugged Canadian
Shield to the north and the mixed hardwood plains
of southern Ontario, and stretches from the Georgian
Bay Coast to the Ottawa Valley. It is the last wilderness
landscape in the southern half of the province. The area
harbours rare species that are associated with geography,
such as the five lined skink, Ontario’s only lizard, and
the Blanding’s turtle, a species on the brink of extinction.
However, this landscape is a refuge for previously
common, yet declining species from the north and south.
Here you will find the river otter and the woodchuck, the
green heron and the common loon, the osprey and the
snapping turtle.
But what is also wondrous about this region is that it
boasts more pocketed lakes than anywhere else in Canada;
almost 3000 larger lakes, and more than 30,000
smaller basins and wetland pockets. This may seem like a
bounty ready for exploiting, however there is, as always, a
catch, because all of these waters, while seemingly abundant,
are actually extremely vulnerable. Their health is
easily compromised, because these basins are underlain
mainly by bedrock. Therefore, there is virtually no soil
to absorb any pollutants or excess nutrients, especially
when native vegetation that supports filtration processes
is removed, and then also the shallow humus is a tenuous
foundation for any natural regeneration after the
landscape is disturbed.
Some actions and development styles, in conjunction
with Climate Change, create conditions for turmoil; they
undermine these sensitive ecosystems, and reduce the
fish populations that live in them and the species that
rely on them. Today, we are seeing more algal blooms,
fish kills, and invasive species.
However, there are simple solutions that are easy to
implement to bolster and care for our water and wild
cousins! Solutions such as limiting LED night lighting that
contributes to algal growth, distracts and harms pollinators
and songbirds, but also attracts mosquitos; leaving as
much native vegetation as possible in connected garden
pods, or installing gardens at the shore using mainly native
plants; limiting herbicide and pesticide sprays, even
those touted as “natural”, not filling or bringing in soil
to areas at the shore which contribute to more phosphorous
loading, invasive plants, and erosion; and keeping
natural slopes at the shore with healthy root masses to
allow for waves to break gently and to keep the natural
rhythms of the water intact.
To assist the growing numbers of shoreland owners
in achieving wins for their homes, communities, and
local wildlife populations, The Land Between charity
has created the Blue Lakes program. It is an ecolabel
and suite of tools. Much like the global Blue Flag program
that is a label awarded to marinas and beaches,
the Blue Lakes program is a label awarded to groups
on lakes that strive for stewardship excellence. Plus,
the charity provides workshops, educational tools, and
also data to help Lakeland owners succeed. The Land
Between charity has gathered data from over 2000
lakes and over 20 years, and works with landowners
to understand trends.
related tools and resources visit www.thelandbetween.
ALL-NEW, BUILT IN CANADA, 2023 HONDA
CR-V HYBRID SET TO ARRIVE THIS FALL
Monika Carmichael, Dealer Principal at Trent Valley Honda,
is excited to announce the unveiling of the all-new, built-in-
Canada, 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid, set to arrive this fall.
“The new Honda CR-V Hybrid has been long-awaited
by staff and customers,” says Carmichael, who won the
Businesswoman of the Year Award in 2019. “We’re so
excited as this time we’ll be getting the model here before
it appears in the U.S.”
The 6th generation of Honda’s best-selling SUV, the CR-
V, with both Petrol and Hybrid engine options, is being
manufactured in Alliston, Ontario, the plant which is the lead
producer in the world for CR-Vs. This new vehicle sets the
benchmark for safety, technology, design, and performance.
“The CR-V Hybrid is a good stepping stone for those who
are hesitant to go to a fully electric vehicle,” she continues.
“And it has everything that the previous CR-V has and more
–it’s more dynamic with a longer wheel base, and has more
safety features, such as a ‘snow mode’ which allows for
maximum traction and performance in icy conditions. The
‘e-con mode’ will help drivers get more fuel efficiency.”
The 2023 CR-Vs come with an expanded Honda Sensing®
suite of driver-assistive technologies that includes Traffic
Jam Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and the Lane Keeping
Assist System.
Carmichael notes that for many years the CR-V has been a
top seller in Peterborough and the surrounding area because
of its suitability to the cottage country lifestyle, with lots of
room to carry outdoor equipment and supplies.
Trent Valley Honda is taking orders now for the new vehicle,
both the Petrol model arriving early October, and the Hybrid,
which is expected to arrive in late November.
“We represent a brand that has always been committed to
the environment and offers products consumers want that
better their lifestyles,” she says. “Honda’s commitment to
safety, low emissions, new technology and reliability have
been the core and essence of our strategy and key success
factors for us since the inception of the brand in Canada, 52
years ago.”
Trent Valley Honda’s online showroom is being continually
updated and has been made even more user-friendly.
“We’ve made improvements to our website and created
videos of the cars and our processes to post online, which
is also a good place to view our pre-owned vehicles as
they come in,” she says. “We’re excited that between
now and January 2023, we will have three new SUV
vehicles released – the HR-V which came in July, the
CR-V with Hybrid option, and the Pilot, a new larger SUV,
all within six months. Stay tuned for more details on our
website.”
