#PlaceofSurprise 1

Getting away from the day-to-day, clearing the mind,
recharging the batteries – we all need to escape from
reality sometimes. Everyone’s version of escape is
different: for some, it’s the getting out and about in the
great outdoors; for others, a delicious meal or an evening
at the theatre. You’ll find it all on the Yorkshire coast.
Health, wellbeing
and tranquillity
There’s more and more evidence that
getting outdoors whenever possible
is one of the keys to great health and
wellbeing. Take a sunset stroll on a
sandy beach, try a bracing moorland
ramble, or just spend some time in a
forest lowering your stress levels - the
Japanese call it ‘shinrin yoku’, or forest
bathing, and consider it a cornerstone
of preventive health care and healing.
For a touch of luxury, why not end
your day with a wellbeing experience
at a spa? You’ll feel renewed when you
return to your everyday life.
Scarborough
History and heritage
Lose yourself in the past: there are
two magnificent and important
heritage sites on this coast. Whitby
Abbey and Scarborough Castle are
just a 20-mile coastal drive through
the beautiful North York Moors
National Park apart. And there are
plenty of other historic venues to visit
– not quite as spectacular, perhaps,
but equally fascinating.
Or spend an afternoon browsing in
one of our many beautiful art galleries
and museums, or an evening at the
theatre to see life through another’s
eyes.
Outdoor activities
North Yorkshire is one of the least
populated areas in the UK, so it stands
to reason that we’re big on wide-open
spaces! Take a relaxing seaside stroll
(do it after dark, and you’ll have the
added bonus of enjoying the stars in
our dark skies). Test yourself with a
spot of thrilling coasteering or surfing,
or enjoy the views on a clifftop hike –
the Cleveland Way National Trail offers
some of the best coastal walking in
the country.
Accommodation
Is there anything nicer than waking up
in after a great night’s sleep knowing
that you’ve got a whole day ahead
of you with no one to please but
yourself?
Whether your tastes run to basic or
luxury, you’ll find accommodation to
suit you on the Yorkshire coast.
A good old-fashioned tent, a glamping
pod or a yurt; a boutique B&B or
luxury high-end hotel with full spa
facilities; beautiful home-from-home
self-catering accommodation –
it’s all here!
Sport
Physical and mental wellbeing are
closely linked, and there’s nothing like
a day of physical activity to send you
off to bed ready to sleep the moment
your head hits the pillow.
From the gentler pursuits of golf to
the high-octane joys of surfing, you’ll
find plenty to challenge you and tire
you out, in the most enjoyable of
ways, on the sporting Yorkshire coast.
Roll up, roll up!
Scarborough Fair Collection
Escape to a time when pleasures
were simpler at the dazzling
Scarborough Fair Collection, home
to a magnificent working collection
of vintage fairground rides, steam
engines, cars and mechanical organs,
including a Wurlitzer which once
shared a stage with The Beatles.
You can experience the joys of a
bumper car ride or a twirl on the
Golden Galloping Horses, or keep it simple with a penny
arcade game or coconut shy. The Scarborough Fair Collection is in
the grounds of the Flower of May Holiday Park on the coast road
between Scarborough and Filey, but is open to the public.
We’ve all spent a lot more time than usual
at home recently, so there’s definitely a
few itchy feet around. But you don’t need
to go too far to find some fabulous places
to explore on the Yorkshire coast.
6 DiscoverYorkshireCoast.com

#PlaceofSurprise
Scarborough
#PlaceofSurprise 7

The first resorts
There’s a reason why this area is
one of the UK’s most visited – in
fact, we can think of at least three!
Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are
among the country’s favourite seaside
resorts, and punctuate a coast that’s
also home to a myriad of smaller
seaside villages, bays and beaches
bristling with opportunities to explore
history and heritage, culture and arts,
and sports and outdoor pursuits.
Best foot forward
Walking is increasingly seen as one of
the best forms of exercise, and it has
the added bonus of getting you out
and about in the fresh air. The 175km
Cleveland Way will show you some
spectacular and varied countryside,
from inland Helmsley across the
heather-clad North York Moors
National Park to Saltburn-by-the-
Sea. From there, it heads down our
entire North Yorkshire coast to Filey,
affording some unparalleled views.
The White Rose Way takes you on a
journey from Leeds to Scarborough –
its final stretch is around the resort’s
magnificent Castle Headland.
On your bike
Prefer two wheels to two legs? A bike
is a great way to explore the cyclingfriendly
Yorkshire coast. The Moor to
Sea Cycle Network is the North York
Moors’ flagship long-distance bike
route – at 150 miles long it connects
Scarborough, Whitby, Dalby Forest,
Pickering and Great Ayton in a series
of moorland, forest and coastal loops
along quiet roads, woodland tracks
and bridleways. It’s handily split into
11 shorter sections, so don’t feel you
have to do it all at once!
On the high seas
Don’t forget the type of exploring
we’re most famous for around here
– take to the seas by yacht, dinghy,
surfboard or paddleboard. Sea
swimming and coasteering are also
popular activities.
Culture vultures
The Yorkshire coast is home to some
excellent theatres: visit Whitby
Pavilion or, in Scarborough, the worldfamous
Stephen Joseph Theatre, the
Open Air Theatre, or Scarborough
Spa. There are tons of museums,
galleries and historic venues, too.
We’ve plenty of fun festivals, whether
you’re a sports fan, a foodie, a
literature buff or a music lover.
Explorers and
smugglers
One of this coast’s most famous
sons was also one of the country’s
greatest ever explorers. Captain
James Cook was born at Marton, near
Middlesbrough, and apprenticed in
both Staithes and Whitby. Find out
all about him at the Captain Cook
and Staithes Heritage Centre, and the
Captain Cook Memorial Museum on
Grape Lane in Whitby, where you’ll
actually walk in his footsteps – he
once lived in the house. Whitby was
also home to two renowned William
Scoresbys: the father a whaling
captain said to have invented the
crow’s nest; the son a bold Arctic
explorer.
More footsteps to follow in: the 18thcentury
smugglers of Robin Hood’s
moved their contraband from the
bottom to the top of the village to
the top using a series of tunnels and
passageways – it was said a bale of
silk could make the journey without
ever seeing the open air!
World of wonder
Whitby Museum
Whitby Museum is stuffed with wonderful
objects and artefacts reflecting the town’s
fascinating history. You’ll find fossils and
maritime memorabilia, jewellery made
from Whitby jet, art, toys, costumes
and social history. Find out more about
some of the town’s most famous sons
and daughters, including Captain Cook
and the whaling Scoresbys. And don’t
forget the gothic treasures, including former curator Dr
Merryweather’s Tempest Prognositcator and the notorious
Hand of Glory, believed to be the only surviving example of
its kind. The Museum is in lovely Pannett Park, alongside the
Pannett Art Gallery, which hosts a large collection of work
by the famous Staithes Group of Artists, and a superb and
eclectic mix of 19th and 20th century paintings.
too relaxing for many of us. Unwind
with a spa day, or even just a simple
one-off treatment, at one of our
for those of you with more esoteric
tastes – our celebrations of all things
Arts and culture
From Victorian writers and artists
such as Bram Stoker, Lewis Carroll,
the Brontës, John Atkinson Grimshaw
and the famous Staithes Group to
contemporary authors like Alan
Ayckbourn and Benjamin Myers,
this coast has always been a cultural
inspiration. The area has become
increasingly popular with major
league filmmakers, too, inspired by the
stunning scenery – you can find out
more about that on pages 38 and 39.
Follow in their footsteps – who knows,
you could end up writing or painting a
whose heads are in the stars.
Health and wellbeing
The four acknowledged pillars of good
health are great food, regular exercise,
a lack of stress, and peaceful sleep. A
Scarborough
Scarborough was the country’s very first seaside
resort, and still keeps its place in so many hearts
as the Queen of Watering Places.
Scarborough Surf Festival
You saw it here first…
It all started here: visitors have flocked
to Scarborough, known worldwide
as the first seaside resort, since
the 1600s when the health-giving
properties of the Spa waters were first
discovered by Mrs Thomasin Farrer.
Fast-forward 400 years, and while
people may no longer drink the
waters, they still come for the glorious
scenery, the outstanding culture, the
natural attractions, and, of course, the
always-warm welcome.
Spectacular Scarborough Castle
keeps watch over the town from its
clifftop perch right in the middle of
two sweeping bays. The golden sweep
of Blue Flag beach in the North Bay
offers more traditional pleasures,
its famous rainbow of brightlycoloured
a Blue Flag beach perfect for keen
sandcastle builders. The South Bay
and sparkle of glittering fun fairs,
amusement arcades and speedboat
trips.
Can’t decide which suits you best?
attracts big names – this year, the
Bryan Adams, Crowded House,
Lionel Richie and RuPaul’s Drag Race,
plus many more. Scarborough Art
Filey
Last year, the seemingly endless golden crescent of
sand at Filey was named as one of the top 20 beaches
in the whole of Europe in a poll of seasoned travellers.
Eat your heart out, French Riviera!
Life really is a beach in Filey
There seems to be no end to the
awards heaped on Filey Beach – in
recent years, it’s also earned a coveted
top ten placement in the UK’s 10 best
beaches according to TripAdvisor and
been named as best beach in the UK
in the Sunday Times.
Five miles of fine soft sand provide
the perfect escape from the daily
pressures of life, whether you’re
looking for a busy family day out,
a brisk walk with your favourite fourlegged
friend, some adventuresome
watersports or, of course, just a
peaceful doze in a deckchair.
Stroll along the promenade, with its
nature-themed sculpture trail, to the
famous Coble Landing, where you can
discover the history of the RNLI at
the lifeboat station and find the last
remaining ‘cobles’ – traditional local
fishing boats – or grab coffee and
cake or fish and chips and a mug of
steaming tea from one of the many
cafés and kiosks.
Check the tide times before you head
out along the famous Brigg – the
views are gorgeous and the rock pools
teem with life. See if you can make
out the form of the drowned dragon
whose spine, locals will tell you,
created the rocky peninsula long ago.
The Country Park is on the cliffs above
the Brigg. You’ll find views across the
beautiful bay, a children’s play area,
mini golf and the Dragon Ring stone
circle – and if you’re really lucky, you
might stumble across a spectacular
kite festival.
Up the hill in the town, you’ll find many
traditional, family-run independent
shops and the Evron Centre, home
to the Filey Tapestry, created by the
town’s skilled needlewomen to portray
the town’s rich history. The Centre also
hosts regular food festivals.
Filey Bay was the site of one of the
most celebrated naval battles of the
American War of Independence –
hundreds of locals had a grandstand
view from the cliffops of the Battle of
Flamborough Head in 1779. There’s
growing interest in the event locally
– keep an eye out for events and
information.
Another of Filey’s glorious parks, Glen
Gardens is a lovely place to take the
younger members of the family, with
its boating lake and play park.
Filey Dams Nature Reserve is the
Robin Hood’s Bay
28 DiscoverYorkshireCoast.com

Robin HOod's Bay
Explore, create, relax
This area is famous as the home
to some of the country’s most
beautiful seaside villages, and
with good reason. Work your way
down the coast from Staithes at
the northern end of the region to
Cayton Bay in the south – you’ll
find something different to enjoy
in each one: arts, history, industrial
heritage, and, of course, surfing.
Staithes is famous for its artistic
connections – it was once home to
the Staithes Group of Artists, whose
talents rivalled the more famous
Newlyn Group. Robin Hood’s Bay was
Staithes
home to many with a very different
talent – smuggling. You can follow in
their footsteps to this day. Discover
the unique part that Ravenscar once
played in Britain’s textile industry as
a centre for the extraction of alum,
essential to fix the dyes – the site of
the alum works is still well preserved.
And if you’re just looking to
switch off, there are beautiful and
spacious beaches at Port Mulgrave,
Sandsend and Runswick Bay – or
find great surfing at Cayton Bay,
just south of Scarborough.
Ravenscar
It could so easily have
been called Peak –
there were plans in
the 19th century to
transform Ravenscar
into a major holiday
resort to rival Scarborough and
Robin Hood’s Bay
It’s said that smugglers could
transport their wares from the beach
to the top of the steep climb without
once breaking cover, via a network
of tunnels and safe houses. Retrace
their steps, stopping off at one of the
many welcoming tearooms, cafés and
pubs – or visit the Old Coastguard
Station Visitors’ Centre, with its living
rock pool tank, a firm favourite with
youngsters.
Sandsend
A beautiful, long beach divided by
a freshwater beck makes Sandsend
the perfect base for a fun-filled
family holiday. Enjoy the view across
to Whitby Abbey as you indulge in
a fresh crab sandwich in one of the
many lovely cafes and restaurants.
Staithes
The annual Festival of Arts and
Heritage in September brings
artists and visitors from across the
country. This unique and friendly long
weekend sees local shops and over
100 homes temporarily transformed
into pop-up galleries, alongside
music, street theatre, events and
food.
Runswick Bay
What more can we say? A leading
national newspaper recently named
Runswick Bay as its ‘beach of the
year’, waxing lyrical: “It’s a beach
close to perfection, with safe
swimming, fine castle-building, space
for ball games, paddleboards and
kayaks for hire, and three freshwater
streams for damming.”
The North
We’re all being encouraged to get outdoors more,
and there can be few more beautiful places to enjoy
the fresh air than in one of the UK’s most diverse
national parks: the North York Moors
Chimney Bank, RosedalE
30 DiscoverYorkshireCoast.com

The perfect escape
In December 2020, the North York Moors National Park
joined a very elite group: it was named as an International
Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky
Association, making it one of just 18 such reserves on
the planet that ‘possess an exceptional or distinguished
quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment’. Its
low light pollution levels make it officially one of the
best places in the whole world to go star-gazing – in the
darkest areas you can see up to 2,000 stars at any one
time.
The Moors National Park Centre, Star and Nature
Hub at Sutton Bank National Park Centre, and Dalby
Observatories in Dalby Forest are designated Dark Sky
Discovery sites, which means each often offers views of
the galaxy to the naked eye. You can even sometimes see
the spectacular Northern Lights, especially on the coast.
And in February each year, the National Park teams up
the Yorkshire Dales National Park to present a fabulous
Dark Skies Festival, with a Fringe Festival in October –
look out for some great events and stargazing sessions.
At Sutton Bank National Park Centre, enjoy the freedom
of miles of cyclilng tracks, ranging from family-friendly
green trails to red trails for more experienced cyclists.
They include two purpose-built all-weather cycling
tracks: a pump track with banked turns and rollers; and
a 2.5km figure-of-eight family-friendly trail doubling as
a cyclocross track for competitive events. The family
trail also enables riders to cycle side-by-side through
woodland, as well as better access for disabled cyclists
using hand crank cycles.
The mountain bike trails in Dalby Forest are world class,
while Go Ape offers high-rise thrills for all the family.
Marine life
The seas off the North Yorkshire
coast teem with life, under the water,
on it, and above it. Keep an eye out
for seals – both common and grey
can be found along this coast. If
you’re walking on the beach, you
might stumble across common seal
pups in June and July, and grey in
November, but please, please don’t
touch or get too close to them – the
mothers are very protective, and
have sharp teeth! Keep your distance
whole world. That means that its
low light pollution levels and clear,
one of the best places anywhere
to see stars. Look out for the Dark
Skies Festival each February, a
collaboration between two muchloved
National Parks – the North
York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales.
For the birds…
Filey Brigg, a rocky peninsula snaking
out into the sea, is an SSSI and a
regular stop-off point for migrating
birds in the autumn. Filey Dams
Nature Reserve, in the care of the
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, is the last
remaining freshwater marsh of any
size in the area: a haven for plants,
small mammals and amphibians, it
also attracts many migratory birds.
Head south, to find the Yorkshire
Nature Triangle, encompassing
Flamborough, Spurn Point and the
Wolds. This important area is within
easy reach of Scarborough and
Filey and includes the famous RSPB
reserve at Bempton. Find puffins,
razorbills, guillemots and the largest
At Helmsley, in the North York Moors
National Park, find the National
Centre for Birds of Prey, home to
the largest collection of raptors
in the north of England, from tiny
burrowing owls to magnificent eagles.
Honey, honey
The purple blanket of heather that
Whether you’re a keen sportsman or just like to sit
action on the Yorkshire coast all year round.
Cricket
One of the country’s most historic
grounds is at Scarborough’s North
Marine Road, where the town’s famous
Cricket Club makes its home. It hosts
first class county matches throughout
the season as well, of course, as one
of the world’s oldest and best-loved
cricket festivals, attracting some
seriously big name players including
the immortal WG Grace, Australia’s
Don Bradman, and a quartet of
Yorkshire legends: Sir Leonard Hutton,
Fred Trueman, Sir Geoffrey Boycott,
and Joe Root. They’ve all played on
the hallowed ground and had their
tea and sandwiches in the graceful
126-year-old pavilion.’.
Golf
There are excellent golf clubs at
Scarborough’s North and South
Cliffs, and at Whitby and Filey.
All four are host courses for the
annual Scarborough Golf Week
in the autumn, which celebrated
its centenary in 2021: a total of 17
tournaments are held over the six-day
festival, with at least one competition
played on each course every day.
Just inland you’ll find Ganton Golf
Club. Founded in 1891, this superb
course has an international reputation
– it’s ranked as one of the top 80
courses in the world, and in the past
has played host to top tournaments
including the Ryder, Walker and Curtis
Cups.
Rugby
Head to Scarborough RUFC’s home
at Silver Royd, near Scalby – it’s one
of the best amateur rugby centres
in the country. The club has four
senior mens’ sides and a senior
womens’ side, with enthusiastic
youth groups spread across 13
different age groups including
micro rugby for the under-6s.
Whitby Rugby Club prides itself
on its friendly welcome and strong
traditional values, and currently plays
in the Durham & Northumberland
League Division 1 and the Teesside
Social League. It also has an
active junior section with teams
from under-7s to under-16s.
Football
Both Scarborough Athletic FC and
Whitby Town FC are in the Northern
Premier League Premier Division,
so there’s plenty of opportunity to
catch a great game. Whitby Town FC,
known to local fans as the ‘Blues’, club
rose up from the lower sections of
non-league football during the 1990s,
winning the Northern Premier League
First Division on the way as well as the
Northern League Cup six times.
Under the leadership of former
Premiere League player Jono
Greening, Scarborough Athletic FC
(the ‘Seadogs’) sprang from the ashes
of the historic Scarborough FC and
moved to a new ground, the Flamingo
Land Stadium, in 2017.
Oliver’s Mount
Scarborough’s Oliver’s Mount is
home to England’s only natural
road racetrack, often described as
‘a miniature TT by the seaside’: the
spectacular mass starts followed by
exciting action along twisting public
roads make this an unparalleled
experience for road racing fans,
attracting crowds of 50,000-plus,
and has attracted some of TT’s
biggest names over the years, from
Barry Sheene – the circuit still hosts a
weekend event named in his honour
– to Ian Hutchinson, Guy Martin and
Ryan Farquhar today.
Surfing
There’s some great surfing locations
along this coast, including at Whitby,
Scarborough and Cayton Bay – but
you’ll have to be very good friends
with a local surfer to find out where
their ‘secret spots’ are!
Each October, the Scarborough
Surf Festival offers free surfing,
swimming and lifesaving activities
run by qualified instructors for both
experienced surfers and beginners.
The festival hub in Scarborough’s
North Bay provides a range of food,
drink and surfing merchandise stalls,
plus information on caring for our
precious coastal environment and
displays of modern and classic VWs.
Taking place in early
event will be the 136th
Scarborough Cricket
Festival – it’s been played at the end
of the first class season every year
since 1876, with the exception of the
war years and, of course, 2020.
Oliver's Mount Racing
The season starts with the Spring
Cup in May, and continues throughout
the summer and autumn – highlights
include the Barry Sheene Classic
(June), the Oliver’s Mount Festival
(July/August) and the International
Gold Cup (September).
Lights,
camera,
action
The Yorkshire coast and the North York Moors National
Park will be firmly in the spotlight in 2022: scenes from
two blockbuster movies due for release this summer
were filmed right here on our doorstep.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway played host to
two of the world’s biggest film stars – follow in their
footsteps by hopping on board a heritage train at
Whitby, and journeying through glorious countryside
to Pickering.
forgotten ‘C’, Macmillan Cancer Support
38 DiscoverYorkshireCoast.com

You’ll pass through Grosmont,
where starstruck locals were
amazed to bump into Harrison Ford
last summer. The fifth in the hugely
popular Indiana Jones franchise saw
a section of track near the village
transformed into a prison camp
during World War Two.
Further down the line, Goathland
welcomed equally dazzling
visitors last year when the Mission
Impossible 7 team, including stars
Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell,
filmed an action sequence there:
daredevil Cruise, famous for
performing his own stunts, was seen
clambering on top of a carriage.
Other stations on this spectacular
journey have had their moment in
the limelight, too: Pickering was the
location for scenes in the recent
feature film of Dad’s Army, and in
the big screen version of Downton
Abbey, while Goathland doubled as
Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter
and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The Yorkshire coast could be
forgiven, though, for getting a little
blasé about Hollywood A-listers
dropping by – in recent years, its
stunning locations have made it
hugely popular with film and TV
companies looking to add that little
bit extra to their productions.
More magic of the
movies (and Netflix)
• Highly acclaimed psychological
horror Saint Maud included
many scenes set on Scarborough
seafront, with director Rose
Glass praising the resort’s ‘magic
combination’ of attractions
• Daniel Day-Lewis’s movie
swansong Phantom Thread saw
the Oscar-laden actor filming
in Lythe, Robin Hood’s Bay and
Staithes.
• Scarborough, starring Jodhi May
and Jessica Barden, was set – well,
guess where!
• The film version of Vera Brittain’s
much-loved novel Testament of
Youth, starring Alicia Vikander,
Taron Egerton and Colin Morgan,
featured Robin Hood’s Bay and
Cloughton Wyke, just north of
Scarborough.
• The film adaptation of Vera Brittain’s
Testament of Youth, starring Alicia
Vikander, Kit Harington, Taron
Egerton and Colin Morgan, featured
Robin Hood’s Bay and Cloughton
Wyke, just north of Scarborough.
• The Runaways, starring Mark Addy,
showed off various locations
across the North York Moors and
Whitby.`
• The Sherlock team, including
Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss,
visited Whitby for their recent
adaptation of Bram Stoker’s
Dracula for the BBC, now a horror
staple on Netflix.
Square eyes
BBC comedy Scarborough, starring
Jason Manford and Strictly star
Catherine Tyldesley was filmed in the
town. At time of writing, the series
was still available on iPlayer.
Nostalgic police series Heartbeat
is long gone, but very much not
forgotten by its legions of fans – it
still lends its name to the North
York Moors between Goathland and
Whitby, and popular hospital spin-off
The Royal was filmed in Scarborough.
Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse
boosted visitor numbers to Staithes
after they stayed in a cosy cottage
there for the 2020 Christmas special
of Gone Fishing.
Family fun
You can still follow the adventures of
Old Jack and Salty the Dog aboard
their boat the Rainbow. Family
favourite Old Jack’s Boat is still on
the original TV series was filmed in
the spring Food Lovers Festival and
the autumn Harvest Food Festival
– not for nothing is it known as the
‘Food Capital of Yorkshire’! Nearby
most beautiful stately homes, and
familiar from its many TV and film
appearances. The magnificent house
gorgeous North York Moors National
best kept secrets. The huge skies
and rolling landscapes of this chalky
area have inspired many artists,
including David Hockney – see if you
his most famous paintings. The low
