MANAGER’S NOTES
First and foremost it is probably
appropriate that I tackle –
carefully, of course – the main
topic of conversation at the club this
week, the injury situation.
It is a bit of a challenge, that’s clear
to see. What adds to the frustration is
the types of injury we have suffered and
the unfortunate ways these have been
sustained. We collect a vast amount of
data and as such work hard to limit soft
tissue injuries. So, you can image the
collective frustrations with the quantity
of ligament, bone and joint injuries we
have picked up, which are not fully in our
control but are still a big part of the game.
All of these issues cannot be corrected
with one strategy, and, of course, we want
as many of the squad available for every
game. We collect data on the players and
their bodies, and we have a hard-working
team covering medical, strength and
conditioning, science and performance.
At the start of the season we put
together a squad that, we thought, had
the depth to remain competitive in a long,
hard season in this unforgiving division.
Last weekend we had to change
our approach, which included altering
our system, mainly down to a shortage
of natural defenders. We knew it
would be a bit open, almost a game of
basketball where they had a chance and
then we had a chance, etc. We didn’t
have the biggest team out and were
disappointed to concede from a couple
of set-pieces – the timing of the second
was a big blow – but we created good
opportunities and put Stoke on the back
foot. McAtee, Doyle, Ndiaye and Gordon
all had chances on top of the goal that
we scored. One, two or three of those
go in and it is a different strategy to the
second half.
After half-time we battled and threw
bodies on but we couldn’t open Stoke up
and the third goal is a bit harsh late on but
we had to go for it.
Blades fans are intelligent and I’m sure
will realise that I wouldn’t choose to set
my team up like that, we had to take risks
and needed some luck, in open play we
were OK but to be a successful team
there’s more to do in other areas.
We have done well to stay amongst
the front runners, and we’ll continue with
the strategy of taking each game at a
time, including today against Blackpool.
There’s around a month until the break for
the World Cup when, hopefully, we have
the opportunity to give the players a bit of
rest and rehabilitation before the big push
starts over the winter months.
This is by no means a distress call
or bemoaning our luck, as has been
mentioned a few times we are top of
the league and we take pride in that,
but we have to maintain the hard work
and standards we have set ourselves, in
this instance, in front of our own fans at
Bramall Lane.
JOHN ENTERS UNITED’S RECORD BOOKS
Defender John
Egan recently
booked his place
into United’s club record
books following his recent
stint away on
international duty.
The Republic of Ireland
international played, and
scored, in both the Nations
League games against
Scotland and Armenia,
taking his caps total to 28.
26 of these caps have
been won during his spell
at Bramall Lane, which
now makes him United’s
most capped international
player ahead of the
likes of Peter Ndlovu,
Billy Gillespie and his
PLAYER FOCUS
countryman Enda Stevens
all on 25.
The ex-Brentford ace
admits he was unaware he
was close and is pleased
to have notched up the
milestone in what has been
a highly successful spell so
far at Bramall Lane.
He told SUTV: “I was
unaware of that until I got
back. It is surprising to me
but obviously it is a proud
moment every time I play
for Ireland, and playing
for Sheffield United has
helped me to do that. I
am delighted to be the
record holder.
“Doing the business
at club level leads to
international call ups and
recognition so coming to
Sheffield United just over
four years ago has really
helped me to kick on with
the international team as
well. I owe all of that to
Sheffield United.”
The 29-year-old added
to his solitary international
goal by scoring in backto-back
games in what
was a losing cause against
Scotland, before helping his
country defeat Armenia.
His aim now is to transfer
some goals onto the
domestic front as United
look to return to winning
ways this afternoon.
He added: “The first one
was bittersweet because
we lost the game, but
always delighted to score.
The second goal we
managed to get the win so
two goals in two games for
Ireland was very pleasing.
Scoring for your country is
special so hopefully I can
score a few for Sheffield
United now.
“We are into a hectic
schedule. You need to
make sure you recover
well and get your body
right for the upcoming
games but we’re up for the
challenge during this busy
period.”
MIXED FEELINGS FOR RHIAN
Rhian Brewster left
the Potteries last
weekend
‘disappointed’ despite
having netted his first goal
since the victory over
Luton Town at Bramall
Lane in January.
Having already
proved his worth to Paul
Heckingbottom’s side with
the assist for Reda Khadra’s
winning goal at Swansea
City last month, Rhian was
in the right place at the
right time to cancel out
Ben Wilmot’s opener last
Saturday, but in the end,
it counted for nothing and
that annoyed the former
Liverpool marksman.
He commented: “I was
obviously happy with
the goal but more than
disappointed with the
result. I’d rather play well,
not score and us get the
three points, than score
a goal in a 3-1 loss away
from home because it
meant nothing. I’d rather be
talking about a win and a
goal, that is when it means
something to me.
“We had to make
changes, we were forced
to change the way we
normally play slightly,
but our identity was still
the same, we wanted to
dominate the ball, press the
PLAYER FOCUS
opposition and score goals,
we weren’t good enough
collectively on the day.”
Reflecting on what
was an impressive finish
at the Bet365 Stadium,
a below-par return from
the last three matches
and his hopes for today’s
encounter, Brewster
remains typically bullish.
He added: “James
(McAtee) is quality on the
ball, we know what he
brings to our team, and
he played really well. For
the goal, I just tried to
get into the box, it was a
perfect ball and thankfully
I managed to volley it into
the net.
“But we wanted more
than one point from the last
nine since the international
break, we wanted a
minimum of seven in my
mind but unfortunately
things just haven’t worked
out for us.
“We have an opportunity
to right the wrongs
though at Bramall Lane on
Saturday and that has been
the focus in the training
this week.
“The manager is
desperate for a couple
of players to return to full
fitness to give him an extra
option, but at home with
the crowd behind us, there
is rightly an expectation
and whoever plays knows
that.”
BEN ON THE
COMEBACK TRAIL
United had some
good news on the
injury front when
Ben Osborn returned to
first team action last
weekend at Stoke.
With the Blades hit hard
with injuries, Ben’s return
has been the one bright
spot from the treatment
room as United continue to
manage a difficult situation.
The versatile ace came
off the bench at the
bet365 Stadium for his
first appearance since
he picked up an injury in
the EFL Cup tie at West
Brom back in mid-August,
admitting the road to
recovery was at times
difficult.
He told UTB: “There
have been times when I’ve
felt a million miles away
from getting back on the
pitch. But over the last
couple of weeks, it has
progressed quite quickly,
and I am happy to be back
out there.
“I rolled my ankle
against West Brom, and my
hamstring also tightened at
the same time. They were
probably both related. The
ankle was a lot worse than
I first thought, it took a
while to recover, but when
PLAYER FOCUS
I started to get back out on
the grass it seemed to heal
pretty quickly.”
Ben revealed he
experienced a strong
pre-season which made
the injury all the more
frustrating as all the hard
miles during the summer
had to be repeated to a
degree, with the ex-Forest
ace now keen to make up
for lost time.
He added: “Getting
through pre-season and
feeling good to then
getting injured in the early
weeks is really frustrating.
After a couple of weeks
of sulking I was okay, and
I had the goal of getting
back and the lads have
been doing great, so I was
just desperate to get back
out there.
“I’ve tried to stay as fit as
possible when I’ve been
out, and the staff do a great
job helping with that. For
me, it is about getting that
sharpness back in training
and hopefully I’ll feel even
better this weekend.
“Blackpool will be tough,
the games in this league
always are, so we need to
get back to what we have
been doing most of the
season.”
returning but disappointment with
the result at Stoke last weekend
SITTING DOWN WITH
R H Y S
NORRINGTON-
Rhys Norrington-Davies
DAVIES
An ever present for the
Blades in the Sky Bet
Championship and
without doubt one of United’s
most consistent performers
to date.
But Rhys Norrington-Davies,
who has been a mainstay on a
depleted left-side in recent weeks,
remains focused and determined
to continue his excellent form
in the coming weeks, before his
focus switches from club to country
and the World Cup in Qatar.
The story of the 23-year-old’s
path into the professional game
is an interesting one, in short he
opted to complete his studies
following his release by Swansea
City prior to joining the Blades in
2018, but his career at United has
seen him develop on-loan at four
different clubs, ranging from the
National League to the second tier,
before he got his big break at S2.
Since making his Blades debut
under Slaviša Jokanović over
a year ago though, Rhys has
only been looking onwards and
upwards and he believes his has
flourished this term because of
the support and backing he has
received from the key people
around him.
Having now become a firstteam
regular at Bramall Lane, his
performances have earned him
some rave reviews from followers
of United, but Rhys was keen to
focus on the collective throughout
an intriguing interview, where he
acknowledged United have their
sights firmly set on promotion back
to the Premier League this term.

UTB 11

UTB 13
UTB: 24 points from the
opening 13 games represents
a hugely promising start to the
campaign. Is it important to
maintain a positive perspective,
despite not winning since the
international break?
RND: “It is obviously still early
days, but we’ve started extremely
well, despite a couple of recent
losses which has disappointed
everyone. We’ve been playing
well all season, so it is about
building the momentum again
and we have the opportunity
to do that against Blackpool on
Saturday. We’ve not been as
clinical in the last three games;
we’ve had to contend with a lot
of injuries but it is a long season
and we remain in a very good
position entering a busy spell
of fixtures before the World
Cup. We won’t shy away from
it; we want to get promoted this
season and that has to be the aim
with the squad we have when
everyone is fit and available. The
manager will never look for any
excuses, but the schedule has
put a lot of stress on those who
have been fit and hopefully in
the coming weeks we’ll only get
stronger as we add more quality
and experience back to the
group.”
UTB: How pleased have you
been with your contribution to
the team this season? An ever
present in the league to date,
coupled with two starts for
Wales in the Nations League.
RND: “This year has been
a big opportunity for myself,
and I’m encouraged to have
developed and progressed from
last season. I struggled at times
to get a regular run of games
in the team and when you are
trying to establish yourself it isn’t
ideal. I was in and out of the team
and my performances perhaps
lacked some consistency as a
result. More opportunities came
towards the end of last season
thankfully though and with the
support of the lads and the
coaching staff I finished strongly
and then went away and had a
good summer with Wales, getting
lots of minutes in some important
games and I felt extremely
positive returning for preseason.
I feel I’ve developed my
strengths; I’ve always considered
myself good defensively, but
I’ve known I needed to be more
composed on the ball and that is
definitely an area that I’ve worked
hard to improve.”
UTB: Paul Heckingbottom
recently praised you in the
media for your determination
and dedication to be the best
version of yourself, particularly
noting your application in
training. How important has it
been for you this season to have
a solid run to help develop your
game?
RND: “I’ve had to be patient,
because ultimately to improve
you need games. You train hard
every single day and complete all
the drills, so you see the pictures
of play, but the improvements
only happen when you get the
minutes on the pitch and I’ve
been fortunate to play every
league game so far this season
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

14 UTB
so I’m seeing the pictures quicker
which 100% helps. Nothing can
replicate a game situation and
all the different factors that make
it totally different to training. It
is about handling the pressure
and beating the opposition, in
training you are against yourself
and you’ll probably hit the feet
of the striker 9/10, in a game it is
much tougher, but you still need
that 90% success rate really.
The more you play the quicker
you see the passes and that is
where I feel I’ve found some
consistency to my game. This
season has started well for me,
the opportunities have been
great personally and I’ll do my
best for the team wherever I’m
asked to play by the manager.”
UTB: Chris Basham has been a
prime example of how important
versatility can be for a player, do
you see it as a positive for you,
especially so far this season?
RND: “Being naturally leftfooted
has always helped me,
particularly at the moment with
so many injuries to left-sided
players. My natural position
growing up was probably at
left-back, but you grow into other
roles and adapt to formations
and the way different managers
want to play. I played as a
left centre-half briefly at both
Rochdale and Stoke City whilst
out on-loan, but by no means
regularly. It has really suited me
though, playing it under Hecky,
stepping in and overlapping, with
a real emphasis on fitness and
supporting the attacking patterns
of play. If I play as a wing-back,
it is similar, but it is more a
personal battle with their right
wing-back and it is about beating
them going forward and stopping
them defensively. In that role
I still feel I need to improve my
understanding about aspects of
the combination play and having
more end product.”
“THIS SEASON HAS
STARTED WELL FOR ME, THE
OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN
GREAT PERSONALLY AND I’LL
DO MY BEST FOR THE TEAM
WHEREVER I’M ASKED TO
PLAY BY THE MANAGER”
UTB: Left wing-back or leftsided
centre half, which one
do you prefer and what are the
main differences between the
two positions?
RND: “I wouldn’t say I had a
preference, I’m happy if I’m
playing, all footballers
will say the same. At
left centre-half you’ve
always got to be
aware of the threats
the opposition have,
regardless of where the
ball is on the pitch. You
have to be positionally
aware to affect the
game should they
break or counter
because if not you
are likely to cost the
team a goal being the
last line of defence.
Sometimes you have to
take a booking if you
are tight and playing
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

UTB 15
a high line, we try to win the ball
back but at the same time we
know we can’t be beaten by the
attacker as they will be through
on goal. At wing-back you can be
slightly more aggressive and get
tighter when you press because
you have the cover of a defender
behind you which enables you
the time to recover. I wanted the
ball fired into my feet as quickly
as possible last season and now
I have a better understanding of
what the left-sided centre-back
needs to do for the wing-back
and vice-versa. It is about moving
the ball quickly and accurately
to create time, enable them to
square them up and put them on
the back foot, the slower you play
out, the easier it is and the less
options you have.”
UTB: You had to be patient
for your first-team debut, having
initially joined the Blades in
January 2018. Do you now feel
very much part of the first-team
squad, having worked your way
up the EFL ladder?
RND: “I’d not worked with
Hecky in the U23s until Slav
(Jokanović) was the manager, but
I played a couple of times under
him before I made my first-team
debut against Carlisle United in
the Carabao Cup, I’d waited a
long time for that moment since
joining in 2018. I was in and out
of the team under Slav and it
affected my confidence, but in
the second half of last season
I managed to make a good
number of appearances and
I rediscovered a lot of self-belief.
Jack (Lester) is someone I first
met working with Wales U21s,
he was Rob Page’s assistant and
we’ve always kept in contact and
had a good working relationship.”
UTB: Would it be fair to say
the club is in a very promising
place as we speak and you are
flourishing under the current
management team?
RND: “It goes without saying
really, we’re doing extremely well
under Hecky, Jack and Stuart
(McCall) but we won’t rest on our
laurels that is for sure. The staff
have worked so hard with me,
especially Hecky and I’m keen to
repay his faith. He sat me down
and told me what I was good at
and where I needed to improve.
He is big on analysis and it helps
you as a player see the good
and bad points, there are no
grey areas. I’m critical of myself
and an overthinker at times, but
I’ve made sure I’ve implemented
those improvements to my game,
both in training and matches.
I just want to improve all the time
and be the best version of myself,
it is about progression and I’ve
worked so hard to get to this
stage, I’m not going to suddenly
change my mentality. With Hecky
and his staff, there are quite a few
givens and the lads know them,
they are no stones left unturned
because he knows how he wants
his side to play. He wants his
players to be brave on the ball
and see a good reaction if you
make a mistake. Hecky is big on
character and body language,
it is about applying yourself
properly and every individual has
bought into his way. Last season,
Conor Hourihane was a great
example for me to follow. The
way he applied himself, despite
being in and out of the team was
fantastic, regardless of whether it
was in training, in a gym session
or away from the club, he went
the extra mile, and it made me
realise what I needed to do at
times, he never complained once
and it made me think.”
“WITH HECKY AND HIS STAFF, THERE
ARE QUITE A FEW GIVENS AND THE LADS
KNOW THEM, THEY ARE NO STONES
LEFT UNTURNED BECAUSE HE KNOWS
HOW HE WANTS HIS SIDE TO PLAY”
UTB: A word for Jack
O’Connell, someone who
has and continues to play a
big role behind the scenes at
Shirecliffe as he continues his
rehabilitation. How much has he
helped you?
RND: “Jack set the standard
extremely high, he was one of
the best in that position and must
have been close to international
recognition at the time, he’d
mastered the role here. The
fans, rightly, expect us playing
now to reach those standards
and that is what I’m striving to do
personally. But he has been a big
presence at the training ground
and on matchdays too. I was
relatively new to the position
at the beginning of the season,
and he asked straight away if
I wanted him to look through my
clips, he drops me messages and
is just really supportive of the
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

UTB 17
group. He points me in the right
direction, and I want to listen to
one of the best, understandably
he is a favourite with the fans,
and he deserves all the plaudits
for how he continues to handle
himself. I’m one who always
paints pictures of how a game
could pan out in my head, so
I can see it quicker on the pitch
and honestly, he’s a terrific help.”
UTB: Finally, let’s talk about
getting back to Bramall Lane
this afternoon and hopefully
regaining the momentum that
was built before the recent
international break?
RND: “We have the best
fans in the Championship in
my opinion, that comes with an
expectation but for a club like
this it isn’t bad thing, if anything
it is added motivation to improve
and develop your game to be
the best you can be as a player.
We obviously want to win every
game, it won’t always be the case
that we can, it’ll be a season that
has ups and downs but there
is lots of football to be played
and when I come to the end of
the of my career in many years’
time hopefully, I’ll always regard
Bramall Lane and Sheffield
United as a special place to be.”
UNDER-21s UPDATE
United earned the Steel City
derby bragging rights with a
comprehensive 3-0 victory over
Wednesday at Hillsborough.
The Blades took full command after a
goalless first half with the in form Louie
Marsh again amongst the goals for Micky
Collins’s side.
After being held at bay in the first 45,
United took the lead when Marsh played
the ball wide to Sai Sachdev who returned
the ball with a low cross to allow Marsh to
convert.
Two minutes later Marsh bagged his
second when he netted after Wednesday
had failed to deal with a corner.
Daniel Jebbison then saw an effort
cleared off the line, but the game was
sealed late on when an Andre Brooks
strike from range took a deflection before
looping over the ‘keeper to make it 3-0.
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United recently produced an
impressive performance as they
ran Category 1 side Crystal Palace
close in the Premier League Cup.
A youthful Blades side made a bright
start with Sam Aston sending an effort
wide and Owen Hampson also going
close. Palace took the lead through
Junior Dixon after being awarded a soft
penalty but just before the break United
deservedly levelled. After seeing an
effort blocked, the impressive Hampson
then slotted home Johnny Oluleye’s low
cross to make it 1-1. Hampson could have
netted again 10 minutes from time but was
denied one-on-one, and with five minutes
remaining Asher Agbinone bagged a
winner for the Eagles.
Prior to the Palace game, the Blades
were beaten 3-1 by Wigan in the
United fought back strongly to
register a point in the Continental
Cup but lost on penalties to
Durham who nicked the bonus point after
an entertaining 3-3 draw.
Durham quickly had United on the back
foot after racing into a 2-0 goal lead after
goals from Rio Hardy and Beth Hepple.
Just before half time, Neil Redfearn’s
side managed to get a foothold when
Georgia Walters showed great fleet-of-foot
before firing in her first for the club.
In the second half, Walters was on target
again with a header to level the contest,
but Durham regained the lead from the
penalty spot through Hepple.
With 10 minutes remaining United
levelled again through Bex Rayner’s
stunning half volley but it was Durham who
pinched the extra point after winning the
penalty shootout.
In Memory...
RIP KEITH EDDY
Sheffield United is deeply saddened to
learn of the passing of former player and
captain, Keith Eddy, at the age of 77.
He made 136 appearances for the
Blades, scoring 21 goals.
Keith made his Football League debut
with Barrow but made his name as a
player under Ken Furphy at Watford,
where he captained them to the FA Cup
semi-final and promotion to Division Two.
Signed for the Blades by the legendary
John Harris, his first touch of the ball as
a Blade was in the Watney Cup penalty
shoot-out against Bristol Rovers at
Eastville. Keith played in Tony Currie’s
first ever game for Watford as well as
featuring together at Bramall Lane, and
United’s ambassador said:
“He was excellent in midfield and a
fine passer of the ball, but in defence he
was outstanding, a great reader of the
game. Along with many others at the
time, I think he was unlucky not to have
been capped for England.”
When Furphy took over at Bramall
Lane, he took Alan Woodward off
penalties in favour of Eddy, which caused
a few raised eyebrows at the time. Keith
also took over as captain from Currie
in 1975.
He departed United in 1976 and played
for the legendary New York Cosmos,
captaining a team that included Pele and
Franz Beckenbauer, before coaching
in Canada and then carving out a
successful career as a businessman.
In the States, he was in regular touch
with former Blade Alan Woodward.
Our thoughts are with the Eddy family
at this sad time.
John Garrett’s
FABLES & FOLKLORE
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
Totem Pole Position...
I am sure all of those privileged
to have been parents have gone
through the same ‘souvenir’ toys
on family holidays. Both of my kids had a
weakness for, well, tat, and they were
both experienced pros in the art of
acquiring it.
Your heart ran cold if they laid sight
on anything that vaguely resembled
something off the TV. I recall one rain
sodden last day in Cornwall where my
eldest insisted that we couldn’t get off
early as he wanted to wait until the shop
on the Haven site opened so he could
get a particular plush Tweenie spotted
the night before. 12pm the shop opened,
and I stayed in the car as his mum rushed
into the place like someone on the first
day of the sales to grab the offending
object, get back in the car before being
the first woman to drown on dry land and
then get on the A30 before it became its
usual Friday afternoon car park. Oh, how
▲ The totem pole is back out in the museum
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

36 UTB
we laughed when we pulled back on the
drive at Handsworth over 10 hours later.
It didn’t even survive the back seat of the
car before its arm had parted company
with the rest of its body.
The journey had been a nightmare,
and that heady concoction of siblings,
heat, lack of a toilet and a West Highland
terrier who had decided she now loathed
everyone in the family hadn’t helped
things! We all know that there are only
so many times that the wheels on the
bus can go round and round before
they come off, don’t, we? The Tweenie
went missing soon after and the dog
was saying nothing, although there
was a strange bump in the flower bed
at Wheatley Grove which appeared
overnight. If the dog took a dislike to
“THE TOUR STARTED ON MAY 12TH,
JUST TWO SHORT WEEKS AFTER THE
SEASON CLOSED AGAINST ARSENAL
AT HIGHBURY AND IT WENT ON UNTIL
JUNE 9TH, TAKING LOCAL LADS
LIKE LEN BADGER AND MICKY ASH
TO THE USA AND CANADA WHEN
THEY HAD PROBABLY BEEN NO
FURTHER THAN ROTHERHAM ON THE
something, it had a habit of, well, just not
being there very long. I am sure that if
someone ever digs the garden up to build
an extension it will look like some crazed
killer of plush toys with a shoe fetish once
lived there!
Abroad was worse. First it was the
plastic toys which were basically a
fake version of something which could
be bought (for a lot more money) at a
reputable store. I swear we kept so many
sellers in Tenerife going for a year every
time the Garrett family were in town. We
had a Buzz Lightyear. Similar but not as
good. Twenty minutes that lasted before
the button which was supposed to make
his wings pop out shot its head clear off,
landing in a lady from Leighton Buzzard’s
drink. How we laughed!
It apparently said all of the
catchphrases of the Disney original, but
with the novel twist of being in some
dialect that no-one had ever heard
before. Every time the voice button was
pressed, they brought out a jug of Sangria
and a bowl of olives. Very strange.
Spinnerman was another purchase.
That beat the record for disintegration by
a mile. Yes, it proudly said ‘Spinnerman’
on the box. I checked the time it lasted
before being damaged on the fake Rolex
I’d also been sold. It said the thing had
broken three hours before it was sold to
us. The Spinnerman had serious issues
when inspected. For a start, it had three
arms and one leg, largely due to the fact
that one leg had been replaced by an
arm. Handy for holding on to a wall when
climbing I suppose. Terrifying for those
playing with it though. Spinnerman also
could not perform the basic superhero of
its Marvel counterpart. This was proven
when it was dropped from a wall, and it
crashed to the floor without the parachute
opening. In fact, as it turned out, it didn’t
have a parachute to go with the loss of
its head. In fact, any customs searching
our luggage on the way back from a
trip abroad would have arrested us on
suspicion of having some form of sadist
who got pleasure out of dismembering
children’s toys! That was the thing -
instead of filling a Spanish landfill, we
had to lug them all back with us to show
grandparents how their spending money
had been spent.
The other thing a bit later was football
kits. The eldest, in particular, just couldn’t
get enough of them. Wherever we were,
he had to get a kit at all costs. Spain it
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

UTB 37
was Real Madrid every time, and never a
fake. I can’t abide fake football shirts full
stop. You can spot one a mile off. Some
of the United ones in recent years I have
seen have been a joke - colours wrong,
material wrong, badly badged etc.
We had loads of others. Benfica when
in Portugal, Valletta in Malta, England
every time there was a kit change - the
list was endless and always expensive to
say the least. That’s the other thing, when
a new kit comes out it’s a must have, and
even at our level that’s a regular thing.
Kits and shirts at least always made
it home, albeit occasionally a tad battle
scarred from ketchup, cola, orange or
sun cream.
When the team have played abroad,
they will also generally come back
with a souvenir gift or two. There used
to be a storeroom under the Tony
Currie Stand years ago which was full
of dusty old trophies - nothing of any
great significance, more the sort of
‘presented to Sheffield United FC on
commemoration of them playing such and
such on whatever date’ which had been
handed over in exchange for something.
Never a case of being ungrateful, far
from it, just one of those things that
happens I suppose. Occasionally there is
something a little more substantial, and
we have cabinets in the boardroom to
accommodate if the need arises.
One of the best things I have ever
found from when we went abroad is a
totem pole.
Not a full sized one (it wouldn’t fit in
the kit bag), no, this is a bit smaller, and
it relates to the trip to Canada at the
end of the 1961-62 season - a mammoth
undertaking back then and a great
example of the late, great John Harris not
having a great deal to do when football
stopped. He was described to me by
several players of the time as a tee-total
▲ John Harris led a tour to Canada
Methodist lay preacher who still lived with
his beloved mother, the game was all and
any chance to extend it over the summer
was seized with glee.
The tour started on May 12th, just two
short weeks after the season closed
against Arsenal at Highbury and it went
on until June 9th, taking local lads like
Len Badger and Micky Ash to the USA
and Canada when they had probably
been no further than Rotherham on the
top deck of a number 69 bus. We played
various exhibition games before the final
game against Eintracht Frankfurt at the
Varsity Stadium in Toronto in front of a
crowd of 11,000. The Canada leg of the
tour had been organised by the son of
one time FA Cup winner and England
International Bert Lipsham. Bert had
emigrated to Canada in 1923 after a spell
as the first manager proper of Millwall,
and whilst he was in the new country,
he played a huge part in setting up the
Canadian FA. He also lost an arm whilst
working in a saw mill (I swear) and was
apparently killed in a train crash, though
some reports say it was a heart attack, in
1932 at the age of 53.
Anyway, we had played Frankfurt
before on the tour on June 2nd at the
Empire Stadium. Vancouver won 4-1, this
game billed as an ‘International Football
Match’ saw the Blades run out as 4-0
winners with the goals being scored
by Doc Pace and a hat trick from Keith
Kettleborough.
“I KNOW FROM OLD PICTURES
THAT IT HAD A SPELL IN THE OLD
BOARDROOM IN JOHN STREET
BEFORE BEING EVENTUALLY
CONSIGNED TO THE DARK CUPBOARD
UNDER THE STAIRS, WHERE I FOUND
IT 20 OR SO YEARS AGO”
Now, we didn’t get any old trophy
for this. As said, we got a totem pole
to lug all the way back to Blighty, and it
amazingly made it back intact. I know
from old pictures that it had a spell in
the old boardroom in John Street before
being eventually consigned to the
dark cupboard under the stairs, where
I found it 20 or so years ago. It has to
be said that it’s a strange looking thing
to bring back from abroad, but nowhere
near as strange as a Buzz Lightyear or
disfigured Spinnerman, and, as its 60
years this year since we won it, it’s lasted
a damned sight longer than either of
those did!
▲ Keith Kettleborough netted a hat-trick
It’s back out in the museum. Every time
we have had it on display, it seems to
have brought us a little bit of luck, so it’s
going to get a chance again.
Fingers crossed.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW features a
Blades related photograph from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
One of United’s most
controversial player sales since
the Second World War was Mick
Jones’ move to Leeds United in late
September 1967.
Manager John Harris threatened to
resign over the deal and many fans
protested. Into such a potentially difficult
atmosphere came midfielder Willie Carlin,
signed by the Blades from Carlisle United
during the same period.
Carlin made his debut in the first home
game after Jones’ sale against Newcastle
United and impressed immediately with
his tenacity and passing ability. He also
scored one of the Blades’ goals in a
2-1 win.
Carlin, who began his career with
Liverpool and won England schoolboy and
youth honours, is featured in the centre of
today’s photograph moving towards the
ball. The photograph was taken during
United’s fifth round FA Cup tie at West
Ham United on 9th March 1968. As well as
Carlin the photo shows West Ham forward,
Brian Dear, just behind him. Due to FA
rules governing change kits for their cup
competition, West Ham actually played
in their away kit and United wore black
shorts rather than the white ones they
wore as their first-choice home strip.
The other United player who can just
be seen behind Carlin is another midfield
player, Frank Barlow, a product of United’s
prolific youth system in the 1960s. An
injury hit Blades team claimed a famous
2-1 win in this game to move to the last
eight of the competition where they were
unlucky to lose 1-0 at Leeds United.
Ironically, this photograph was used in
the now defunct magazine Soccer Star in
its issue of 13th September 1967 reporting
that the Blades had just sold Carlin to
Brian Clough’s Derby County for £60,000.
Carlin had impressed in the recent fixture
between the Blades and Derby, scoring
one of United’s goals in their 2-0 win.
The Blades were relegated to the
Second Division at the end of the 1967-68
season. United fans were optimistic that
their side had enough quality to make an
immediate return to the top flight. They
had appointed a new manager during the
close season, former Shrewsbury Town
boss, Arthur Rowley. Rowley was allowed
to wheel and deal in the transfer market
to build a promotion winning side and one
of his early decisions was to sell Carlin
to divisional rivals Derby as there had
been reported ill-feeling between the two
of them.
The sale was a controversial one and
United missed Carlin’s midfield energy,
especially as he played an important
role in helping the Rams win the Division
Two league title and promotion to the
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

UTB 41
top flight. By contrast United finished in
a disappointing ninth place and it was no
surprise that Rowley had been replaced
by previous incumbent, John Harris,
as manager by the start of the 1969-
70 season.
Carlin also helped Leicester City win
the Second Division title in 1970-71,
the same season that United finished
runners-up to them and joined them in
winning automatic promotion to the top
flight.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
from the past between the Blades and our opponents…
SHEFFIELD UNITED 3-1 BLACKPOOL
SATURDAY 31st OCTOBER 1981
United’s assault on the old Fourth
Division took place during the
1981-82 campaign, where under
the stewardship of Ian Porterfield, the
Blades accumulated 96 points, winning
27 matches with no defeats at Bramall
Lane throughout the season.
The Tangerines were one of the Blades’
many ‘victims’ when they visited the Lane
in October 1981 as the 15,566 spectators,
the second highest of the day outside the
First Division, witnessed a 3-1 victory.
Ten years previously, these two sides
would have contested First Division
football, however, due to a decline the duo
had wallowed to the depths of the bottom
tier in the Football League.
Whilst the scoring was high, the quality
was not good as a goalless first half was
met with several miss-hit passes and
shapeless play.
United took the lead on 59 minutes
through former Blackpool striker Bob
Hatton after he intercepted a loose ball to
score his 200th career goal. Mike Trusson
doubled the hosts’ lead two minutes later
from close range before Stan McEwan
quickly reduced the deficit.
The Blades’ dominance paid dividends
as Porterfield’s side cruised into a hardfought
3-1 lead through the 34-year-old
Hatton’s second on 82 minutes. After
sending Steve Neville away on the right
flank, the veteran charged 50 yards into
the opposition’s penalty area to convert
his teammates’ cross.
United also won the return fixture 1-0
at Bloomfield Road five months later and
would go on to win the Fourth Division,
achieving automatic promotion to the third
tier, whilst Blackpool would finish 12th in
the table.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

UTB 49
1960
This 1-0 win at Portman Road
against Alf Ramsey’s Ipswich
Town ensured a seventh straight league
win for John Harris’s side. Billy Russell
scored the crucial winner. It would
eventually be a successful season for
both as Ipswich won the Division Two
title with United also promoted after
finishing second.
1996
United had
games in
hand on all
the teams
above them
as Howard
Kendall’s side
prepared
to host
struggling
Charlton at
Bramall Lane in this second-tier
encounter. After defeat against Southend
and a goalless draw at home to Tranmere,
United picked up a much needed three
points after second half goals from Petr
Katchouro (2) and a third goal in as many
games from Andy Walker. Both strikers
would end the campaign with 14 goals
apiece in all competitions.
ON THIS DAY
UTB looks back into the archives to find out what
happened on this day in United’s history…
2016
Defender
Ethan Ebanks-
Landell
continued a
strong run
in front of
goal, netting
a brace in
United’s 4-0
win over Port
Vale. After
scoring his
first goal for the club in midweek
against Fleetwood in the Football
League Trophy, the Wolves loanee
added two more with Mark Duffy and
Stefan Scougall also scoring as United
recorded their biggest win so far in the
eventual promotion winning 2016-17
League One season.
1988
OCTOBER
15
The Blades were second
ahead of this third-tier clash
at Bloomfield Road as Dave Bassett took
his side to Blackpool. Martin Pike had
scored in the first half for United and with
the match level at the break, the Blades’
winner arrived through Simon Webster as
United made it five league wins in a row
on their way to eventual promotion.
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Jim Iley...
South Kirkby-born
Jim Iley played for
the Blades
between 1953 and 1957.
He was a left footed
strong wing half, who
tackled hard, was
comfortable on the ball
possessing a strong shot
and fine passing ability.
His excellent form with the
Blades attracted attention
of clubs in the top flight
and he was sold to
Tottenham Hotspur in
August 1957. The fee
United received helped
them to fund new
floodlights!
Later in his career Jim
played for Nottingham
Forest, Newcastle United
and Peterborough United
achieving well over 500
Football League games by
the end of his career.
Arguably his best form
was at Newcastle where he
became captain showing
exemplary on-field
leadership. He helped lead
the Magpies to the Second
Division (Championship)
title in 1964/65 and was
part of the side which reestablished
the club in the
top flight.
His form had been
impressive enough to
earn him selection for the
Football League (once
whilst with the Blades)
and to earn one England
U23 cap.
His leadership skills had
been noticed by other
clubs and it was Fourth
Division Peterborough who
appointed him to his first
▲ Jim managed the likes of Peterborough,
Barnsley, Blackburn, Bury and Exeter
managerial post in January
1969, initially as caretaker
player-manager and then
on a full-time basis. Whilst
with Posh perhaps to the
extra responsibility he bore
on the field he became
their first ever player to
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL

UTB 51
be sent off in a Football
League game whilst
playing Port Vale.
He left Peterborough
in September 1969
having failed to get
the club promoted. He
took a scouting job with
Cambridge United in the
interim until another Fourth
Division club at the time,
Barnsley, appointed him
as manager in April 1973.
Although going close to
winning promotion, fans
became frustrated at the
narrow failures and the
club lost patience and
dismissed him in April 1978.
Ironically, the Tykes were
promoted the following
season benefitting greatly
from the foundations Jim
had established.
Probably his least
successful foray into
management came
at Second Division
Blackburn Rovers where
his tenure lasted only 172
days between April and
November 1978. Nothing
seemed to go his way and
the club struggled. He was
sacked after a campaign in
the local press against him.
Other clubs still
recognised his ability
to work on a shoestring
budget and Fourth Division
Bury were the next to
appoint him in July 1980.
He went agonisingly close
to helping the Shakers
win promotion and indeed
▲ Jim during his playing days with United
they missed out on the
last day of 1982/83 season
when they lost their final
game. As at Barnsley, the
club’s board lost patience
and Jim was sacked in
February 1984 and in the
following season the club
won promotion, again
benefitting from the work
Jim had done.
Hi final managerial
appointment was at
Exeter City in June 1984
after their relegation from
Division Three. Tasked
with a rebuilding job, he
started well with his team
winning 5-0 win against
Northampton Town.
The team subsequently
struggled but he still had
the majority of fans on his
side and who very unhappy
when he was dismissed
in April 1985. There was a
campaign here to have him
reinstated and indeed Jim
tried to buy a controlling
share of club to take up the
post again, but he failed
with his bid.
Jim had a reputation for
working effectively with
small budgets and building
struggling clubs who
enjoyed future success.
He was highly respected
in the game for his eye for
a player and he undertook
further scouting work for
Charlton Athletic.
A WHOLE
NEW
BALL
GAME
United were back in Premier League action and
welcomed Nottingham Forest to Bramall Lane on
Saturday 24th October 1992.
After overcoming Bristol City in the League Cup, the
Blades were beaten 3-1 by Leeds at Elland Road leading
to an already vital game at the bottom as Brian Clough’s
side arrived in South Yorkshire bottom of the Premier
League, but just three points behind 19th placed United.
A drab game ended goalless, a result which probably
didn’t help either side much as Forest continued to
struggle.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL
This year marks the 30th
anniversary of the inaugural
Premier League season.
To mark this milestone,
UTB delves into our
programme archive to
reminisce about United’s
part in this historic
campaign, whilst also
talking to those who were
there at the start of what
has since grown into the
most talked about domestic
competition on the planet.
As well as looking back
on United’s campaign, we
tell the full story of the 1992-
93 season and also test
your knowledge about how
much you remember three
decades on.
So, wind the clock back
30 years to relive this
special season throughout
INSIDE THE
PROGRAMME…
MAKING HIS MARK…
Alan Kelly was the feature of the main player interview with the ‘keeper admitting he
knew he was arriving in the summer as Simon Tracey’s number two. The article also
includes quotes from Dave Bassett, stating he regarded Tracey as his number one,
but Kelly was close to bucking his theory, despite Tracey being recalled for this game.
UTB 57
DAVE BASSETT…
Leading off with Dave Bassett’s programme notes, the boss defended his side
following comments made on TV by Leeds striker Lee Chapman. The subject of
United’s direct style irked the Blades gaffer who rightly referred to Chapman’s role at
Leeds where he was the target of several long balls from ‘keeper John Lukic, according
to the United manager. Bassett also called for a ‘cup tie’ atmosphere for the upcoming
League Cup third round tie as the Blades were drawn against Liverpool.
MATCH ACTION…
There was an action spread from the recent 2-0 success against Southampton which
included an image of ex-Blade Glen Cockerill receiving treatment. Cockerill had joined
the Saints from the Blades back in 1985.
INJURY UPDATE…
Throughout the early part of the season, physio
Derek French had been kept very busy with a
number of players suffering injury. In a regular
programme contribution, he provided fans with an
update which included news that Dane Whitehouse
would be missing for several weeks.
CAPTAIN’S NOTES…
Skipper Brian Gayle admitted Forest’s lowly
position was a surprise. Forest propped up the
league for much of the campaign after finishing
the previous season in eighth. Gayle mentioned
United’s style may not be of Forest’s liking after
the Blades had won three from the last four
league meetings between both sides.
BLADES TEAM…
United’s team for this game was as follows…
NEW LEAGUE,
NEW RULES
The Premier League has
widely been credited for
redefining the English
game. But back in the
infancy of the new
league in 1992-93, the
changes were subtle as
the first steps were being
taken to breathe new life
into the beautiful game.
For all intents and
purposes, nothing much
had changed from
the final Division One
season to the inaugural
Premier League
campaign.
It would be in the
coming years when
clubs upgraded or
moved stadia, signed
some of the world’s
best talent and sealed
eye watering TV and
sponsorship deals.
The main change
off the field was the
introduction of Sky
Sports who began the
journey on revolutionising
how we watched the
Premier League.
On the field though, a
couple of rule changes
would subtly help the
entertainment factor,
whilst also keeping the
players on their toes!
1992-93 was the first
season we saw the back
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKPOOL
pass rule introduced, with
goalkeepers no longer
able to pick the ball up
when it was played to
them by the foot of a
teammate.
The rule change was
introduced to discourage
time-wasting and
negative play, something
which was a major
talking point following
the end of the 1990
World Cup.
Over time, this
modification would prove
to be one of the most
▲ Paul dishes out the instructions at QPR away
successful rule changes,
but for goalkeepers and
defenders, it meant a
sudden change from the
norm as players up and
down the country quickly
retrained the mind to
adapt to the new rules.
Paul Beesley was
one player who was
now adjusting to the
new regulations, and
he explained there was
many hours of work on
the training ground to
ensure everyone was up
to speed.

▲ In action at Ayresome Park against Middlesbrough
He told UTB: “If you
go back to the first ever
Premier League season,
there was a feeling
something special might
be happening, but of
course there was no
overnight huge changes.
It happened over time.
“One change I really
had to get to grips with
was the back pass rule.
This really did have a
major immediate impact
on the game, and some
watching now will find
it hard to believe there
was a time before this
rule change!
“It was huge for me
as a defender because
I was closest to the
‘keeper and more likely
than most to pass it to
him. I remember we were
actually practicing it
during the close season.
I remember in training
having balls knocked
over the top and we’d
work on playing it back
correctly to the ‘keeper.
“Making sure the
ball was played to the
correct foot, and at
the right pace. It was a
big adjustment for the
keepers of course too. In
fact, our first goal of the
season came from a back
pass, I think. Trace then
cleared it up field and we
got a throw, and from that
throw we scored the first
ever goal.”
Of course, there were
mishaps, and United
were no exception as
Tracey opted to take a
touch from a back pass
at Spurs before dribbling
the ball away and out of
play under pressure.
He then wrestled an
opponent to the ground
to prevent a quick throw
when out of his goal
and promptly saw red
for a second yellow. The
incident prompted boss
Dave Bassett to say his
‘keeper had “the brains
of a rocking horse!”
WHAT HAPPENED
ELSEWHERE
THE STATE OF PLAY…
The top two were now starting
to open up a small gap at the
summit, as surprise leaders
Norwich continued to set the
pace. A top four which included
Blackburn, Coventry and QPR
was seen as a surprise, with
the much-fancied Manchester
United six points off the pace
in sixth. Meanwhile, in the
week building up to this round
of fixtures, Liverpool legend
Ian Rush broke the club’s
goalscoring record when he
surpassed Roger Hunt by netting
goal 287 in a 2-2 draw against
Manchester United.
HEADLINE ACT…
Liverpool had stuttered badly at
the start of the 1992-93 season
and this powerhouse of the
1970s and 1980s now looked in
serious decline. After finishing
sixth the previous season, the
Reds were well off the pace
and 16th when leaders Norwich
visited Anfield. But there were
signs of the old magic as
Graeme Souness’s side turned
on the style despite going
AN OPEN LETTER
TO JAKE DANIELS
Dear Jake,
Many of us at Rainbow
Blades related to
your experience of
coming out, knowing
first-hand how nervewracking
and deeply
personal it is. To do
this in the public eye
shows enormous
bravery and we are
delighted you have
received such fantastic support from your
club and the wider football world.
The impact you have had and will
continue to have by inspiring gay and
LGBTQ+ footballers at all levels cannot
be underestimated. You have shown
people do not have to change who they
are to fit in; that they belong as they are.
No one should have to hide any part of
themselves to be accepted in football, the
beautiful game we all love.
Thank you for being visible in a space
where many of us have previously felt
unseen and for showing that everyone
can aspire to be their happiest, most
authentic self in every aspect of their
life. We look forward to seeing how your
career develops both on and off the pitch
and hope to welcome you to Bramall Lane
AN UPDATE FROM OUR
SENIOR BLADES
On Wednesday 28th September
a party of 24 Senior Blades made
their own way to Wentworth
Woodhouse for a tour around the
spectacular house there, which has
the longest facade of 606 feet of
any country house in Europe.
Set in lovely grounds and gardens
and on a beautiful autumn day, it
was a fantastic day out. We had two
groups and one of our guides David
had a wealth of knowledge about the
history of the house and made the
tour extremely interesting.
After the tour and a stroll around
the gardens, some made their way
to the equally enjoyable Wentworth
Garden Centre and enjoyed a very
nice lunch there too. Thanks to
Sue for organising the outing and
we are already looking forward to
and they recommended
the Foundation’s
programme. I’ve stayed
ever since.”
Fans FC is a free
programme run in
conjunction with Sheffield
Hospitals Charity and
NHS Charities Together
that consists of 18 weekly
sessions. Our variety
of sessions focus on
physical and mental
wellbeing for people
diagnosed with cancer
and/or other long-term
illnesses and people
affected by cancer (family
and friends). Sessions
take place both virtually
and face-to-face to
ensure everyone can get
the help they need.
Jan added: “It’s a very
good programme at
the present time, and
it’s getting better. I got
really depressed during
the lockdowns, with not
being able to go outside,
so doing the programme
online during those
times really helped.
That combined with
the physical activities
has really improved my
overall health.
“Through Fans FC I’ve
been able to get involved
with other programmes
at the Foundation,
particularly helping the
younger participants. I’m
nearly a senior citizen but
I love playing football!
That’s my passion at
the moment and I’m
passionate about getting
younger women and
girls involved in football
because when I was
young, I felt like an
outsider. When I was
growing up, if I wanted to
play football I had to play
with the lads in the street,
and of course there was
no way to carry that on
professionally.
“I didn’t play for ages,
and I think I missed out
on quite a bit, particularly
getting into a women’s
football league. It’s been
great seeing the women’s
Euros this past summer
and I hope we can get
more women joining
in with our Fans FC
sessions.”
Michael Appleton is trying to build
momentum with the Blackpool
squad he took over last summer
and he has seen positive signs in
recent weeks.
After Blackpool’s 16th-place finish in
the Championship last season, Appleton
set realistic targets as he returned to
Lancashire for a second spell as the club’s
manager last summer.
While there have been some setbacks
for the Tangerines since their managerial
change, the last few matches have served
up some hugely encouraging signs that
progress is being made.
A 0-0 draw against Sunderland could
easily have swung in Blackpool’s favour
and then they produced a fine performance
to beat a strong Watford side 3-1 last
weekend.
That win was a blueprint for success and
Appleton will be hoping his team can build
on recent results at Bramall Lane today.
STAR MAN
Making good use of the loan
market is crucial to the
prospects of any
Championship side and Blackpool
appear to have recruited a young
gem in striker Theo Corbeanu.
The talented forward has scored
some crucial goals in the opening
weeks of the season and has shown
signs that he can be a real asset for
Michael Appleton’s men this season.
“Theo knows where the goal is and
he’ll get more goals and assists to his
name between now and the end of the
season,” says Blackpool boss Michael
Appleton when speaking about his
loan signing.
“He’s a great lad and is learning
all of the time. He wants to learn and
wants to be better, and we can help
develop him as much as possible.”
Corbeanu has extra motivation
to shine in the next few weeks for
Blackpool, as he is in line to play at the
World Cup finals in Qatar with Canada.
“I think I have a serious shot at
making the team for Qatar,” says the
young striker.
“I’m very confident. Obviously, it’s
going to be difficult because you need
to be very informed, especially at my
age and especially because some of
the players at my position are at top
teams around the world.
“I believed 100 per cent that I’d get
invited to camp. I’m on loan, but I’ve
stepped up a division and I knew that
if I did well, which I have, I’d get the
call.
“I have loved my time at Blackpool
so far and hopefully that move can
help me with Canada.”
Canada will play Belgium, Morocco
and Croatia in the group stages of the
World Cup.

THE EX-FILES
David McGoldrick
EACH WEEK UTB CATCHES UP WITH THE PROGRESS OF SOME OF THE NAMES WHO ONCE
GRACED BRAMALL LANE, BUT ARE NOW CONTINUING THEIR CAREER ELSEWHERE…
David McGoldrick is off the mark
for his new club Derby County
after scoring a dramatic stoppage
time winner recently against
Peterborough United.
Trailing 1-0 and down to 10 men,
things looked bleak for the Rams
until an equaliser from Jason
Knight on 88 minutes was followed
up by McGoldrick’s winner from
12 yards.
After missing the first four games
of the campaign through injury,
McGoldrick is now finding his
feet at Pride Park after his highly
successful stint at Bramall Lane
came to an end at the conclusion
of last season.
“As a striker you enjoy your
goals, and especially when
they come as a winner as well,”
McGoldrick said of his first strike.
“We hadn’t scored for a few
games, so to get two right at the
end was nice. It was a pleasing day
all around and it’s always special
to turn it around late on.
“We are all together as one in
the dressing room and it helps with
the team bonding too, celebrating
together at the end, especially
as quite a few of us have come
through the door this summer.
The changing room was very
happy after.”
Grateful to be back fit again after
recovering from the injury which
curtailed his final season in S2, the
ex-Forest front man is now focused
on a strong run in the side.
He added: “I feel I am getting
fitter. I came here after a four or
five-month spell out, following an
operation. I’ve been building my
fitness up and I had a setback by
doing too much too soon, but now
I am building things up slowly.”
LEARN CPR,
SAVE A LIFE!
Sheffield United
has teamed up with
Yorkshire Ambulance
Service to encourage
fans to learn life-saving
cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR).
Anyone can be affected
by a sudden cardiac arrest
at any time, and without
intervention, the person
will not live.
When someone
collapses and stops
breathing normally, it is
important to quickly call
999, perform CPR and use
a defibrillator to give the
patient the best chance of
survival.
Sheffield United is one of
Yorkshire’s top 10 football
league clubs to support
Yorkshire Ambulance
Service’s Restart a Heart
campaign to encourage
fans to learn CPR.
Supporters will be given
the opportunity to learn
CPR from ambulance staff
before the match today
against Blackpool.
Jason Carlyon, the
community engagement
manager with Yorkshire
Ambulance Service, said:
“There have been many
high-profile cardiac arrests
among professional
footballers in recent years,
including Christian Eriksen,
Fabrice Muamba, Glen
Hoddle and David Ginola,
as well as fans at football
stadiums, and we have
all seen how the quick
reaction of witnesses
has undoubtedly saved
their lives.
“But not everyone is
as lucky. In the UK, only
10% of people who suffer
a cardiac arrest out of
hospital survive, partly
because they don’t receive
early CPR and defibrillation.
“It is therefore vital
that we give people the
confidence and skills to
perform CPR in this ultimate
medical emergency and
we are delighted that
Sheffield Utd is supporting
our campaign and helping
us to achieve our goal of
saving more lives.”
As part of the campaign,
ambulance staff and
volunteers will visit 136
of Yorkshire’s secondary
schools to teach CPR to
more than 30,000 students
on Friday 14th October
2022 to mark Restart a
Heart Day.
Find out how you can
learn CPR at https://
campaign is supported by
Service Charity. Find out
GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY
– SOAPER HEROES
Each year on 15th October, 200 million people
worldwide celebrate Global Handwashing Day.
Join Lifebuoy’s mission to educate 5 million
children on the importance of hand hygiene by
2025!
Teaching our children why handwashing matters
is vital. Lifebuoy, Official Hygiene Partner of the
EFL, set up a kids hand hygiene programme called
‘Soaper Heroes’ which has been put in place to
improve kids hand washing behaviours.
The aim of the programme is to help kids, and
those around them stay healthy. If we can keep
them away from having sick days from nasty
germs, we can have them out playing sport and
there is where you can help!
By downloading the Lifebuoy Soaper Heroes
programme, you will also receive the following:
— A welcome letter from EFL’s
Soaper Heroes ambassadors
— An overview of Lifebuoy’s
Soaper Heroes programme
— Soaper Heroes warm up
and clean up activity
— Educational hygiene posters for your club
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
All at Sheffield United FC are delighted
to wish former chairman of Senior
Blades Brian Walton and his beloved
wife Marjorie a Happy Diamond
Wedding Anniversary.
Brian joined the Senior Blades
Committee in February 2007 and was
voted in as chairman at the Annual
General Meeting in June 2012.
Since then, he has worked tirelessly
for the Senior Blades with a sense of
humour in his own inimitable style and
we join them both in celebrating their 60
years of marriage.
