New boiler? No problem!
INDEPENDENT plumbing and heating specialists 1st Call Gas have
been extremely busy over the past year.
Not only have they moved premises from Crookes to a spacious
base at Westbrook Court, Sharrowvale Road, but business has
doubled.
As we embark on the coldest period of the year, the team, led by
David Turner and Leon Stones, are out and about making sure
homes are kept cosy and residents comfortable.
A retired gentleman from Woodseats is among recent clients to
have benefitted from the combined 40 years’ experience of staff.
After his old boiler was condemned, the customer contacted 1st
Call who came out to fit a new Ideal boiler.
It was also recommended that a single pipework system in the
property, which dates back to 1922, be replaced to boost the
heating system
The client said: “It was suggested that a dual pipe system would
perhaps improve the situation as it never got warm in the house,
and it does seems to be the case.”
New radiators were also installed with the work completed in
stages.

Dronfield Eye
W
E might well be waving a fond farewell to the
summer of 2022 right now, but there is still
plenty going on in and around the Dronfield Eye area.
Our Eye on Events section stretches to five pages this month,
with details of forthcoming shows at the Civic Hall, other
performances in Sheffield and Chesterfield, plus a 1940s
Market.
We’ve lots more positive local stories this month, including the
Dronfield Woodhouse bowlers who have won a major South
Yorkshire competition and the 12-year-old who finished runnerup
in a national photography competition.
And headteacher Martyn Cooper explains why Dronfield Henry
Fanshawe School has been particularly delighted with this
summer’s GCSE and A Level results.
Editor Mike Firth called in at the local area’s most remote
restaurant and was delighted with what he discovered.

OLLOWING on from a
hectic summer, I have had
a fairly quiet few weeks as
Town Mayor, apart from one
charity music event - the
Rockin’ Roots concert at
Hilltop Club, in Dronfield.
Performances took place both
inside and outside the venue as it was a sunny day.
I spent a really great afternoon listening to my kind of music,
from the 1960s, and it was easy to see how much hard work
went into organising it.
I later learned that the event had raised more than £1,200 for
the Weston Park Cancer Charity – a fantastic amount.
As well as being entertained by the various bands, I caught up
with people I had not seen since before the lockdowns.
I also met some new people, including Janet Woodhead, a
member of Old Bolsover Town Council, and it was so interesting
to talk to her.
A full report of the Rockin’ Roots event can be found on page
66 of this Dronfield Eye.
The next occasion on my Mayoral calendar is the visit of a
delegation from Dronfield’s twin German town of Sindelfingen,
which is due to take place over a long weekend.
Dronfield Town Twinning Society have activities lined up for the
party, which I believe numbers about 25. These include meals in
Sheffield and at the Civic Hall, along with a trip to Bakewell.
It is the first such visit for a few years due to the pandemic and
it will be wonderful to see people I met when I went to
Sindelfingen in 2019.
I have vivid memories of my trip to Germany, including making a
daunting speech in the Town Hall in front of an audience of 200,
including Mayors from other twin towns in Europe!
Also coming up soon is the Civic Service – a long-standing
annual celebration of Civic life in the town. This year it takes
place on Sunday, September 25th.

Bathroom time travel!
T
HE experts at H2O Bathroom Solutions have created a modern luxury en-suite
in a spectacular home that has its origins as a 17th century barn.
Kevin and Margaret Faulkner moved in to their five-bedroom property, which is
part of a wider conversion project, in 2002 and recently decided to upgrade the
master bedroom’s en-suite.
They approached H2O on the recommendation of their son and, within seven
weeks of the initial contact, the job was completed.
The couple, who are retired, are thrilled with the work done to create a
contemporary space with a flawless finish.
Kevin said: “You open this very old door and walk through into the 22nd century!”
As well as a walk-in shower, features include a roomy wash basin with twodrawers,
a large dual-energy towel rail and tiling to compliment the shower panels.
Kevin praised the efficiency and ease of the whole transformation process, which
began with Richard popping out to measure up and included computerised designs
which allowed the clients to “almost walk around the room and see it in 3D”.
Kevin said: “The showroom is spectacular and they have some really lovely
designs to choose from. Their fixtures and fittings are second to none.”
Kevin and Margaret were pleased to be able to let someone else take on the
responsibility of coordinating the scheme.
Commented Kevin: “It’s nice to be able to hand things over to someone you trust,
who can come up with solutions
and make sure it is installed in the
right way. Richard came around
about half way through the
installation to make sure everything
was okay.”
Kevin felt installer Geoff worked
with fastidious care at all times in
line with the couple’s desire to be
good neighbours in their small
community.
To sum up, Kevin said: “It’s fair to
say H2O delivered on everything
they said they would and it was
good that we didn’t have to worry
about any issues.
“They got on with the work quietly
and efficiently. We’re delighted with
the result.”

NE of South Yorkshire’s most prestigious bowling
competitions has been won by a team from here
in the Dronfield Eye area.
Dronfield Woodhouse Bowling Club members scooped this
summer’s Sheffield & Hallamshire A Division title thanks to a
string of outstanding victories.
Travelling as far afield as Stannington and Bradfield for their
weekly Tuesday fixtures, they finished comfortable winners of

TOTAL of £47 million has been
granted to improve bus
services in Derbyshire
Last year the Government published a
new National Bus Strategy which set out
a vision for future improvements across
England and how services can recover
from the pandemic.
The strategy placed a requirement on
Derbyshire County Council and area bus
companies to work together to create a
Bus Service Improvement Plan and a
consultation took place.
The results helped to inform the BSIP
which was submitted to the Government
last year and asked for money to improve
services across the county.
Derbyshire’s success in gaining £47
million provides the money which will
help pay for:
• More frequent buses and extended
hours for vital services.
• Improved bus punctuality and reliability
better value bus fares, especially for
young people and those looking for work.
• Expansion of the ‘tap on and tap off’
system for paying for tickets.
• New transport hubs with Real Time
Information to help connect bus services
to other bus and train services.
• More demand-responsive services for
rural and semi-rural areas.
• A new website and app which will cover
all services to make a journey easier.

greenkeeper Billy Smith who has kept the playing surface in
tip-top condition during particularly testing weather conditions.
Now team members are looking forward to officially receiving
the trophy at the competition’s presentation night at Lees Hall
Golf Club in November.

EYE
ITH Parliament in recess, Summer is always a
great opportunity for me to get more things done
at home.
This year has been no exception and, as I try to do each
summer, I’ve been busy on my village and town meeting tour to
try to speak to as many local residents as possible.
Part of 2022’s tour included meetings in both Holmesfield and
Dronfield – and a huge thank you to the dozens of residents
who turned out to chat about issues as wide-ranging as
energy issues, cost of living, pot-holes, town regeneration and
the NHS.
I hold village and town meetings throughout the year, too,
and there are more coming up. If you would like to attend a
future one, please just let me know either by phone or email.
We do get in touch with hundreds of residents each time we
hold one to invite them but it does take me a while to get
invitations out to everyone. The ability to have a proper chat
about national and local issues is so important – all are
welcome!
This month, I also had a great afternoon a few days ago at St
Andrew’s Church with the Dronfield Swimming World club. Led by
Jayne, it was fantastic meet lots of local residents who come
together each week to help each other with their weight-loss
goals.
It was particularly lovely to be able to spend some time with
everyone and to hear more about the fantastic progress of
members of the club and how they support each other to achieve it.
And, as I write this, I am also just back from having popped into
the Eco Day held at Dronfield Baptist Church on Saturday, 2nd
September.
I was only able to get to the day right at the end, but I know there
was a good turnout, really interesting speakers and lots of
information for attendees about how to tread more lightly on the
earth for the long-term.
It is the making of small changes in our lives, where possible,
which will all help us achieve the goal of improving the environment
for good. Thanks again to the members of the church for holding
the day and allowing people to find out more.

Pumpkins make prizes for Isla

HEN keen young photographer Isla
Hitchen discovered a field full of pumpkins
near Barlow, little did she know that the
photograph she took of them would go on to
gain local, regional and national recognition.
She entered her ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ image in a Colours
of Nature photography competition organised by The
Rotary Club of Dronfield and, on winning first place, her
photograph was automatically entered for the
Intermediate Section of the organisation’s District
competition.
Judges awarded 12-year-old Isla, who lives at Gosforth
Valley another first place and then it was on to the UK
National Final where she was delighted to earn runner-up
position.
Isla, a pupil at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, was
also delighted to see her photograph earn more fame
when it appeared in the 2022 Dronfield Directory.
She said: “I’m delighted that so many people like my
photograph. I think it beautifully illustrates the different
shades of pumpkin ripeness. My favourites are the green
ones that are speckled with orange.”
Awards were presented to her at a recent meeting of
The Rotary Club of Dronfield at Dronfield Hall Barn.
Now Isla has already taken a couple of photographs
which she hopes will be contenders for next year’s
Rotary competition. However, the going could be tougher
as her ten-year-old brother, Noah, is also showing an
interest.

HEN Bill Ryan bought some High Hopes
sunflower seeds from his local garden centre, he
only half believed the claims printed on the packet.
He planted them alongside the vegetable plot at his Troway
home and couldn’t believe how quickly they grew.
“All I did was water them every day but it soon got out of hand,”
said Bill.
His nine sunflowers just grew and grew and once their flowers
opened, the tallest of them measured a huge 15ft.
Now he’s going to save some of the seeds to plant next
Springtime, but others will be fed to local birdlife.

Homes plan for Gladys Buxton School site
PROPOSED development of 36
A houses was discussed at the
September Town Council meeting.
The planning application, made by Rockliffe
Homes for 20 three-bedroom and 16 fourbedroom
homes, is under consultation with
planning officers at NE Derbyshire District
Council. The site is classed as ‘brownfield’
and is included in the Dronfield
Neighbourhood Plan for development.
The Town Council has written in opposition
to the current application, highlighting
several points: There are no affordable twobedroom
houses or houses suitable for the
older generation; there are no plans from the
developer to replace the loss of 29 trees; the
developer has also made an assessment of
viability and concluded there are no Section
106 contributions to be made.
Coun Martin Hanrahan said: “A
development of this size will have a
substantial effect on local services, roads
and health provision.
“There is a clear expectation that monies
should come from the developer through
Section 106 provision to mitigate the
impact on the infrastructure of the area”

The original application for the
former St John Ambulance
headquarters was considered
unacceptable for several reasons

residential properties which could
be affected by odours and noise,
directly affected by parking
restrictions including the pedestrian
crossing and double yellow lines
adversely affecting highway safety
and in close proximity to a school.
It was also considered contrary to
many policies within the Dronfield
Neighbourhood Plan and NEDDC’s
Local Plan.
Coun Susan Burkitt, representing
residents in her ward, commented:
“The Town Council has written to
the Secretary of State in support of
the original planning decision. As
ward councillor, the well being of
residents has been at the forefront
of my concern with this application.”

time critical care for medical emergencies.

Town Council maintenance
T
OWN council facilities including parks, pitches, recreational areas, bowling
greens, tennis and basketball courts have been maintained throughout
summer. The summer season takes a heavier toll on facilities with increased
wear and tear. August works have included ten benches replaced, new
handrails, fences, steps, a huge lorry-load of bark for parks, new walls and
new basketball plates and nets. Swings, roundabouts and a zip-wire were
repaired and new trampoline was fitted in Moonpenny Park. In addition,
grassed areas, flowerbeds and hanging baskets have been maintained.

A family favourite
WITH more people placing value on relaxation and rejuvenation, new
bathrooms will often be high on home improvement wish lists.
Dronfield family, Peter and Steph Wilding and their two young
children, inherited a walk-in shower when they moved into their threebedroom
semi.
As Steph and the children love baths, they wanted their new
bathroom to feature a bath as well as a shower and the experts at A61
Bathrooms duly obliged making the most of available space. A61 also
smartened up the family’s downstairs
toilet room with the installation of a tiny
hand bowl.
Peter and Steph chose A61 after
shopping around local companies as it is
important to them to use local providers
and businesses when possible.
The Wildings said A61 owner Craig and
staff gave them the friendliest response
and could also carry out the work without
too much of a wait.
The bulk of the fitting, from strip-out to
completion, was carried out in just over a
week.
The A61 team also overhauled the
downstairs toilet as part of the project.
Peter highlighted communication as
being especially good during the process.
He added: “The toilet needed replacing
but it wasn’t their fault, it was due to the
manufacture, but A61 quickly sorted it
out.”
Now all the work is completed, the
Wildings are happy with what has been
achieved.
Peter said: “It looks great. The kids love
the new bathroom and Steph is made up
with the new bath.”

Prof Ian Rotherham explains why our hot
weather and late flowers have boosted the
number of bumblebees in the wildlife garden
F
OR the later part of the summer and into early autumn,
my garden has simply been ‘buzzing’ and much of this is
because of good numbers of bumblebees.
There are plenty of honeybees too and also some interesting hoverflies
including the hornet mimic volucella zonaria. With a body-length of
nearly two centimetres, this impressively large insect does indeed look
rather hornet-like, but feeding on pollen and nectar it is totally harmless.
The larvae live inside wasps’ nests presumably scavenging or being
fed as young wasps. This is very much a southern species that was
formerly considered very rare but which is now spreading northwards.
So to find it in my garden is exciting, but not entirely unexpected. It is
certainly one to look out for and a species that is easily spotted if it is
around. They are very active with direct flight but love to bask in
sunlight.
Together with some of our butterfly species which do well in hot, sunny
weather, many bumble bees are thriving.
With flowers such as red valerian and marjoram having largely finished
in the wildlife garden, others like honeysuckle, the various delightfullyfragrant
mints, and especially English lavender, have come to the fore.
Lavender is especially favoured by a mix of bumblebee species, for
example the large buff-tailed bumblebee, white-tailed bumblebee, and
garden bumblebee all with lots of yellow, black and white and big,
rounded, hairy bodies.
Jet-black with orange-red tails are red-tailed bumblebees (though there
have been fewer in recent weeks) and rather smaller are tree
bumblebees, and brown and orange carder bees.
Pretend
There are also hoverflies that look like bees, and ‘cuckoo bees’ which
look like other bumble species but essentially parasitise their nests.
They pretend to be another species so they can lay their eggs in the
nests and their young are then raised by the host colony. Quite often the
emerging cuckoo larvae will kill off their host rivals.
On one particularly large lavender bush in my garden, I counted 30-
plus bumblebees at once but just one individual honeybee. The latter
tend to be on marjoram and then more recently on mint and abundant
echinops flowers.
The remarkable bumblebee flight relies on a ready supply of highgrade
energy fuel in the form of nectar collected from flowers whilst
foraging. Indeed, a typical flight to collect nectar and pollen uses about
10% of that collected to power it.
Most pollen gathered is stored to feed the bee larvae with a fully-laden
bumblebee taking about 25% of its bodyweight in pollen and nectar
back to the nest. In extreme cases, this loading can be up to 75% of
bodyweight.
Bumblebees forage on a range of flower species and types but they
may have to learn how to extract nectar most effectively from sometimes
complex flower structures.
This has evolutionary purpose for these flowers because having
learned how to harvest from them, the bees tend to select the same
species time and again.
For the flowers, pollen taken and deposited on different species is
wasted, but if the bees learn to specialise, this behaviour benefits them
and the flowers too.
Worker bees are ‘central place foragers’, heading out from nests to
surrounding countryside; some species flying locally but others travelling
from five to 20km.

T’S been a glorious summer for golfers, but what
happens now the cooler days and darker evenings
are just around the corner?
Well, local enthusiasts can now guarantee being able to swing
their clubs whatever the weather thanks to the arrival of Ready
Golf in the heart of Dronfield.
Golfers can take advantage of the latest technology from
FlightScope, allowing them to tackle some of the world’s most
famous courses including Pebble Beach, Valderrama, Royal
Troon and The Belfry.
If they wish, they can have their action and performance
monitored not only by the technology, but also by PGA
professional, James Brooks.
He’s the man behind the exciting business which has been
launched in brand new premises at the end of Callywhite Lane
business park.
James started out on his golfing career 11 years ago at the age
of 14. A member at Hallamshire and then Sherwood Forest, in
addition to playing PGA events, he has also worked as a caddy
on the European Tour.
Living in Sheffield, he and father Mark searched around to find
the perfect premises for Ready Golf and he’s delighted he chose
Dronfield.
He said: “I’ve had many club
golfers and lots from Hallowes
which is just up the road. People
have booked individual
coaching, there have been
golfers who have played for a
couple of years, have never had
a lesson and want a bit of
guidance, and also people who
have perhaps not played for a
few years and want to pick it up
again.”
James says there has been a
good mix of all abilities and
ages; the youngest so far has
been 15 and the oldest nearly
70.
“Once a player is warmed up,
with their permission I can take
a video of them so I can show them their swing. We analyse that
and then as we go through the lesson we use the technology’s
numbers and my knowledge of the golf swing.”
People can book in for lessons, hire the place for an hour or
two and also take along a few friends for a virtual reality game.
There’s no walking to do and you can even control the weather
conditions on the course!

Golf Club. Here’s her verdict:
“I arrived to meet James, who, after a warm welcome, asked
me about my game and any concerns I had. I hadn’t had a
lesson for a long time and things can creep in.
“After a warm-up, we covered a wide range of clubs: pitching

wedge, 8 iron, 3 wood and driver. James started by looking at
my swing with an iron which he said was ‘fantastic’, the numbers
were matching what I see on
the course, a nice straight ball
flight and very consistent.
“We then covered my chipping
technique as I had mentioned
that sometimes I catch the ball a
little heavy and, on the odd
occasion, thin. James watched
me chip a few balls and
explained that this was a result
of my ball position being too far
forward and the low point of my
swing was before the ball,
causing ‘heavy shots’. We
moved my ball position further
back and this gave me much
better ball contact. My low point

ball which improved my strike. I
saw a great improvement in a
short amount of time.
“Finally, we looked at my driver swing as I wanted to gain a
little more distance. James moved my ball position a little further
forwards to inside my left heel and the results were amazing. I
started to swing the club faster, 59mph to 66mph is a massive
jump, and the distance numbers went up too.
“James explained the numbers on the FlightScope screen and
once I understood what they meant I could see there had been
an improvement. I look forward to putting it into action when I’m
next on the course.”

Volunteer helpers need our help
One of the local area’s
favourite volunteer
organisations is
recruiting new team
members and
launching a number
of fund-raising appeals.

OUNDED in 2005,
Dronfield Community
First Responders give up
their spare time to attend
appropriate 999 emergency
calls in and around
Dronfield, supporting East
Midlands Ambulance
Service. They are trained
and equipped to provide
life-saving care until
paramedics arrive.
Working shifts that fit in with their full-time jobs, the local
Responders have attended thousands of call-outs over the years,
helping to save many lives.
In recent times, however, the number of volunteers has more
than halved, so new people are being recruited.
Said Neil Hayter, who has been co-ordinator of the group since
January: “Our numbers have depleted; in 2015 we had 18
responders and this year we were down to eight. So we said
‘Right, we need to start a recruitment campaign.’
“Now we have one new Responder who has just done the
training, we’ve got another one who’s just put her application in
and there are two other prospective interested members coming
to this month’s meeting. So if all those go through and become
fully-fledged Responders we
will have picked up four new
members in less than a year,
which is great.
“We could still have more and,
of course, the more people we
have, the more hours we can
cover responding in Dronfield.”
The Responders meet at the
Civic Hall from 7pm on the final Thursday of each month and
people are always welcome to go along, have a chat and learn
more about the work they do.
Explained Neil: “Sixteen hours a month is the minimum
requirement from East Midlands Ambulance Service. At the
moment, although our numbers are down, we usually have
someone on duty most evenings and Sunday daytime is usually
covered.
“One or two Responders will do an afternoon or a morning,
depending on their days off work.
“We cover Dronfield, the surrounding villages, the north side of
Chesterfield and Eckington. The other week, we were sent to
Ridgeway. It’s not unknown for us to go over the border to
Batemoor or Lowedges if Yorkshire Ambulance are short and
East Midlands pick up a call.”
With potential new members and a desire to be able to offer
more services to patients, the group is now inviting local people
to support their fund-raising schemes.
Said Neil: “We’ve realised we need to start fund-raising, so

“At the moment, we don’t have any pain relief, which can be
frustrating for us when we go to someone who is in pain.
“We want to be able to offer people Entonox - gas and air.
“Although the Ambulance Service will provide the cylinders and
the consumables - mouthpieces and filters - we’ve got to provide
everything else and the bags to carry them in. So it was £1,600
we needed to raise which is not an insignificant amount of
money.
“However, people have been quick to support us. and we have
been delighted to receive £1,000 from The Rotary Club of
Dronfield. We have also had support from Adrian Arksey at
Restart Computers at The Forge and Claire Wilks from Dronfield
Hall Barn has set up a Go

has so far raised £220 which
is a cracking amount.
“A medical company, Reflex,
is donating the six barrel bags
for us, worth £360, so that’s
the Entonox fund-raising done.
“By the end of October when
we will have all done our training with EMAS and we’ve got the
bags, we will be up and running with it, which is great.”
The next fund-raising project is to find the £3,000 required to
buy weather-proof jackets for Responders to wear on duty.
Said Neil: “Although most of our call-outs are indoors, we do get
sent to people in the street and in their back gardens, as well as
horseriders. We also want to provide high-vis jackets at a cost of
£300.
“And after that, we want to raise money to buy a lifting cushion
which is something the ambulances carry but we haven’t
been able to. It is an inflatable which can get someone from
being on the floor into a seated position. They cost around
£4,300.
“Again we would have to be trained by the Ambulance Service
but hopefully next year we might be able to raise money to get
one of them.”

There is always plenty going on in Barlow during Carnival Week
and this year’s festivities were some of the best ever enjoyed.
Open-air cinema, well dressings, a fun fair, classic vehicles, crafts,
bands and cream teas drew thousands to the village but the
highlight was once again the colourful Saturday afternoon parade.

Cover your lantern
Lantern roof spaces are a wonderful way create space and light in your
home, if left uncovered as the nights draw in, they are a cold, black
space.
“So many homes are utilising roof space to create light” says Maxine
Hayter, co-owner of Bespoke Blinds & Poles. “It’s a wonderful way to
open up a room, and light is vital for keeping us happy and healthy; but
with the current energy crisis looming, you need a way to close off that
space when the temperature drops, so you can keep your heat where
you need it.”
There are two types of lantern roof blinds - cellular or roller. Cellular are
ideal for insulation, with the honeycomb structure of the fabric creating
a layer that holds heat in place. Roller blinds in a blackout fabric offers
a similar result.
Roller blinds work on a side channel system, meaning no wires are on
show when retracted; cellular blinds work on a tensioned system -wires
will be visible, although they tend to blend into the background. Both
options are motorised as standard, with manual control options
available on smaller lantern spaces.
“Good natural lighting creates a dynamic space in a home and lantern
roofs are ideal for that,” continues Maxine. “But you should also be able
to control that same space to ensure the room is useable throughout
the year; and that means closing it off when nights draw in.”

“We’ll continue to work as we are, moving
into the future as a team, while expanding
the product range further,” she commented.

Where tradition meets tapas
Over the hills and not too far away is a
historic venue offering a warm greeting,
superb surroundings and exciting food.
Mike Firth calls in with his family
I
F you had driven hundreds of miles on your
summer holiday and discovered a venue as
enchanting as Barlow Woodseats Hall, the first
thing you would have done on your return
would be to rave about it to all your family and
friends.
Fortunately, you can cut out all that motoring and
just pop over the hill from Dronfield to explore this
fabulous 500-year-old venue. And whether you are
simply looking to relax over a few drinks and a
selection of tempting tapas, or you have a wedding
or another kind of lavish celebration to plan, you
won’t find anywhere more likely to impress.
Hidden away not only from the main roads but also
the minor ones, our fear was that this place might turn
out to be a little stuffy. In fact, it was just the opposite
with a laid-back atmosphere in which everyone
appeared to be in a happy mood. Late summer sunshine, terrific
views over the fields and even peacocks on the lawn added to
the occasion... and we still had to look inside the building!
What we discovered was 100 per cent charm, with ancient
stone and cruck arches, huge overhead timbers and stone
flooring.
We could have spent the whole evening discussing the unique
history of the building and its grounds, but we were at Barlow
Woodseats Hall in search of food.
Lee Hawksworth is chef. He trained at the Culinary Institute in
Barcelona where he was the only Brit among 70 other talented
students. He said his time spent there was
the best experience of his life.
Lee is occasionally joined in the preparation
of food by specially invited guests and on the
night we called, his friend Fernando was
doing things which I’d never previously seen.
If cooking prawns with a tiny blowlamp
wasn’t special enough, he was also making
bubbly tomato juice with something which
resembled an aquarium aerator.
So, such delightful surroundings and
attention to detail with the food would surely
equate to big prices on the menu? Actually
not. The tapas prices were very reasonable
indeed - from £3 to £8 - and noticeably
cheaper than we had been asked to pay at a
Sheffield city centre restaurant just a week or
so earlier.
We chose a varied selection, including
those special charcoal prawns (with lemon
confit and coriander emulsion); chicken and
chorizo with tomato sauce; tortilla, asparagus;
calamari and patatas alioli. Wife Helen and I
loved them all, daughter Olivia was
particularly taken with the calamari. Much of the food is locallysourced,
some even grown in the Hall grounds.
Tapas is served at this very impressive place only on certain
evenings and Sunday lunch is presented with a flourish. To book,

With over 40% of A Level entries gaining an A* or A, 70%

MAGINE the world today without social media. Would
it be happier? Would it be safer? Would the younger
generation be able to cope?
As a 21st century teenager, I have been asked these questions
many times – after all, I have grown up not knowing the world any
differently. But nevertheless, my answer is always the same: yes, I
think we would be better off without it.
Many of my peers jumped on the social media bandwagon at a
young age. I, however, was more hesitant. I was worried about
how it could impact my self-esteem and how much time I could
waste scrolling on my phone. Plus, there are times when even I
find myself boring, so why should anyone else be concerned with
me sharing my day-to-day life?
In spite of this, last year I decided to give it a go. And, honestly, I
remain unconvinced.
First of all, social media posts usually show people at their best.
This results in an endless facade of people holidaying in exotic
countries, taking part in exciting activities with friends, and sharing
their effortlessly aesthetic lifestyles and avocado-on-toast
breakfasts. Or, worse still, images and selfies that have been
edited to an unattainable standard of beauty.
No matter how much you try to consider the bigger picture, it is
difficult to avoid comparing yourself and your own life to photos
and videos of people who are seemingly living in a state of
“perfection”.
It damages how users see themselves: slowly chipping away at
confidence and exposing insecurities.
Secondly, tensions online naturally transcend into the real world.
I have known friendships end over no less than how long
someone takes to respond to a message. Or arguments caused
by a minor miscommunication that have resulted in a major impact
on someone’s mental health.
Despite these platforms supposedly making communication
easier, it is surprising how often they can have the opposite
effect.
I will concede that social media does have some benefits –
especially during a global pandemic. But if we want a world that
encourages younger generations – present and future – to lead
self-confident, happy, and healthy lives, then personally I cannot
see how social media comes into that.

Hospice bowled
over by cricket
club donation
H
OLMESFIELD Cricket Club raised more than
£1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice when they
hosted a special charity match.
Members of both the Holmesfield Men’s Senior and Junior
teams took part in the day at the crease, with St Luke’s
receiving a cheque for £1,148, which was presented by the
club’s president, Tom Pearson.
“We are delighted that Holmesfield Cricket Club have
once again given us such fantastic support,” said St Luke’s
community fundraiser, Ellie Matthews.
“The money they raised for us really will make an
enormous difference to the lives of our patients and
their families, both at the hospice and in the wider
community.”
Commented the club president: “This was a very special
day for us and it actually raised more than £2,000, which
was split between St Luke’s and the club.
“We are very pleased to have been able to donate this
sum to St Luke’s as we know how much they do for the
people of Sheffield.
“And if anybody wants to join us, we are always looking for
new members for our men’s, women’s and junior teams.”
Martial arts pair
off to world
championships
A
BROTHER and sister who are both Taekwondo
champions are preparing to represent England on
the world stage in October.
Iden and Faye Hubbock, aged 17 and 14, have been involved
in the sport since the age of six.
Both pupils at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, the siblings will
compete in their respective age and weight classes in the
Taekwondo World Cup, to be held in Slovenia.
The Rotary Club of Dronfield has made a generous donation to
help Iden and Faye fulfil the dream opportunity.
Iden and Faye are members of Chesterfield New Century
Taekwondo, where, in addition to their personal training, they help
in classes, passing on their skills and knowledge to younger
members.
Iden gained his Taekwondo black belt during lockdown and Faye
hopes to qualify for her black belt this year.
The donation from Rotary will help the family meet the cost of
regular travel to Bristol to meet up with England team-mates for
additional training, as well as the whole expense of competing in
the World Cup.
Iden and Fay attended a recent club meeting to thank members
for their support.
The siblings said they are “incredibly proud” to represent their
country, adding: “Our sport has led us to make many friends and
we love competing alongside our Taekwondo 'family' some of
whom will be with us in Slovenia.”
The family thanked Rotary for the donation.
Rotary’s Alan Hepworth said: “Taekwondo in Britain do not
receive any funding and Iden and Faye’s family have to raise
all the money needed for travel and the kit they need to
compete.
“We wish them a safe journey and every success as they
compete and we look forward to seeing them when they
return.”

their spare room in time to welcome Ukrainian refugees -
a mother and two young children - to their home.
However, the couple also wanted a room that was right
for them in the longer-term. Both storage space and
aesthetics were important.
Peter said one of the reasons for approaching Supafit,
which has showrooms in Sheffield and Dronfield, was that
friends had used the company before and been happy
with the work done.
The McDermotts chose a Denim Blue modern shaker
frontage complete with three inset top-frame mirrors to
help boost light in the room.

wardrobe doors with

with crystal knobs.
Peter said: “We wanted
both storage space and
looks. We debated
design ideas with ideas
on both sides and we
feel it looks really good.
We were very happy with

has to pull out, a newbie joins to make the numbers up… but they
don’t quite meet the physical criteria!

SABA Douglas-Hamilton - In the Footsteps of Elephants
comes to the Winding Wheel Theatre, Chesterfield, on
Wednesday, 28th September.
Elephant conservationist and film-maker Saba was born and
raised amongst elephants and nomads in the savannahs of East
Africa. She has spent her life working to protect the African
elephant from poaching, killing and trafficking.
Her father, Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founded ‘Save the Elephants’
in 1993 and Saba, her husband, a group of dedicated scientists
and the local Samburu people, have been fighting the ivory trade
ever since.
In The Footsteps Of Elephants is an inspiring and heartwarming
look at how ‘Save the Elephants’ helped raise millions
of dollars to protect elephant populations across Africa.
Saba tells anecdotes of how they sought the support of
Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista.

AN Evening with Snooker Greats comes to the Winding

IT’S top of the class for Splinters Theatre Group as they
present a dazzling new production of Disney hit High School
Musical on Stage!
Based on the 2006 family favourite film starring Zac Efron, it’s a
story of teenage romance and the battle between college league
basketball and the annual musical theatre production.
The Splinters production comes to Sheffield’s Montgomery
Theatre from October 19th to 22nd and is directed by Kate
Parkin and Jill Beckett, with choreography by Katie Grainger - all
three of them Splinters graduates.
Sprinters Theatre Group, which has been entertaining Sheffield
audiences since 1989, is a youth theatre company with members
aged between 14 and 30.

The Rotary Club of Dronfield is staging a charity concert,
Entertain for Ukraine, featuring talented band The Feel Good
Fridays, at 7pm on Saturday, 15th October, in Dronfield Civic
Hall.
The club was approached by the band, who have given their
services totally free to promote this concert, with all proceeds
going to Ukraine and Ukrainians.
As well as the concert, there will also be a raffle and bar from
which all profits will contribute to the fund-raising.

All aboard for Anything Goes
O
NE of London theatres’ most successful
ever revivals is now set for another revival
– this time in Dronfield. Cole Porter’s classic
Anything Goes will be on stage at Dronfield
Civic Hall just a month after the professional
version finished a record-breaking run at The
Barbican.
So it will be welcome aboard as the SS American
sets sail from New York to London with a boat full of
classic songs ranging from I Get a Kick Out of You
and You’re the Top to Blow Gabriel Blow and the
title tune itself, Anything Goes.
Dating from the 1930s, revivals across the world
have led to Anything Goes being hailed as one of
the greatest multi-award-winning musicals of all
time.
With its story of mis-matched lovers and the
madcap antics of a diverse assortment of passengers
and crew the show has always had a universal
appeal.
Directing the show for Dronfield Musical Theatre
Company is Gavin Ward (usually seen as a
pantomime dame); musical director is Judith
Haywood and in charge of choreography is Andrea
Powell.
Sutton Foster and Kerry Ellis most recently played the role of
Reno Sweeney in London and Ellie Ashmore takes the role in

Shop in style at 40s market

ISITORS to Chesterfield can enjoy themselves
during half-term as the town’s annual 1940s
Market returns for 2022.
Taking place on Thursday, 27th October, between
10am and 4pm, people can enjoy 40s music,
entertainment, exhibits and meet the stall holders in
period dress.
Kalamazoo dance band will once again be back by
popular demand performing throughout the day in New
Square. Be sure to take along your dancing shoes and
join in the fun!
The weekly flea market will take place in the market
place with traders in 1940s costume. There will be a
competition for the best dressed stall and visitors are
encouraged to get into the spirit by dressing in period
costumes.
Entertainment includes an escape artist and a variety
of 1940s singers located around the town centre. There
will also be a display of classic cars, a vintage fire
engine and displays about the Land Army and 1940s
mining.
Chesterfield Museum staff will also be attending in
1940s costume with handling objects from their WW2
education box and explanations on how rationing
operated.

HE Dronfield Supafit bedrooms showroom at
Wreakes Lane had to close for the day on 22nd
August due to their head designer, Jenna Backhouse,
and business manager, Lewis McGuinness, tying the
knot.
Their wedding took place at the quirky and beautiful Charlton
Hall in Alnwick, Northumberland.
All their family members and friends travelled from far and
wide, including Los Angeles and London, to celebrate with the
couple on their special day. Jenna, who wore a Berta bridal
dress, and Lewis departed to enjoy their honeymoon in Venice,

I helped at the Welcome Club for over 20 years, first
providing transport, and then as a full time helper.
On behalf of the members and helpers, I would like to pay
tribute to Kath Elwood who died recently who was a much-loved
leader of the club.
She created a happy atmosphere with lots of fun and laughter -
especially at bingo time. When we had entertainment, Kath was
the first on the floor to dance, and encouraging others.

This scene will take a little bit
of explaining to anyone who
didn’t live in Dronfield before
the 1970s.
As you turned from the Peel
Monument towards what is now the
Civic Centre, this was the scene
that greeted you.
Narrow Farwater Lane had several
twists and turns. Incidentally, much
of the Civic Centre - including the
Sports Centre - celebrates its 50th
anniversary in 2023.

Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School is proud of
its House system, with groups Fanshawe,
Baggaley, Spaven and Millican joined in
recent years by two new ones, Buxton and
Gosforth.
This picture shows girls from Spaven House lining up
for the photographer way back in March, 1938. The
only person identified to us is Jean Searston. Do you
know anyone else?
Spaven House is named after Miss Lillian Spaven, Art
Mistress at the old Dronfield Grammar School from
190625).
Miss Spaven designed and made the memorial
window in the original 1867 Fanshawe building,
previously an assembly hall, now used as the E-
Learning Centre.
The window shows St George with the words “In
honour of the old boys of this school who gave their
lives in the Great War”.
This 1994 image, from the Dronfield Heritage Trust archive,
shows the engineering factory of George Jowitt and Sons,
Wreakes Lane, Dronfield.
Jowitts manufactured synthetic grinding wheels and the factory was
established in Dronfield around 1967, being built on the site of a 19th
century Victorian House called ‘The Rookery’.
This was demolished, leaving behind the house’s extensive garden of
ornamental trees and shrubberies, thus enabling the site to be developed
as a factory garden.
Jowitts also acquired land behind the High Street, which included
Dronfield Hall Barn, and undertook repairs to the Barn’s roof and
maintained it for use as storage.
The firm won an Architectural Heritage Award in 1977 for the site.
In the 1990s the business closed in Dronfield and the site was acquired
by Sainsbury's which opened in 2004.
The Barn was donated to the Peel Centre Charitable Trust in 2005 for
community use.

Rockin’ Roots raises £1,260
Organiser John Firminger reports on the big
success of the Rockin’ Roots charity music
day at the local Hilltop Sports & Social Club

HIS year's event was another triumph with plenty of
great entertainment and £1,260 raised for Weston
Park Hospital Cancer Care.
Commencing at 1.30pm, soul diva Stephanie King set the tone
for the day's live entertainment. The afternoon's entertainment
continued with impressive and well received sets by Pete
McCrae and acoustic duo Alan & Vanessa. As the music
permeated with the warm sunshine, the afternoon outdoor
audience steadily increased to fill the car park.
From 4pm, the action moved inside the club with a great and
varied line-up of live music, kicked off by the top band Past
Vindictive
Masters who confirmed their musical status
with some vintage vocal and instrumental
classics.
Next, The Relovers, fronted by Matt Webster
kept the music rockin' in a lively acoustic
setting.
Returning to this year's event, duo Cobalt
Tales once again had the audience in the
palm of their hands with some well chosen
covers and one or two songs of their own.
One of the club's favourite bands, Revolver,
with their vocal star Hannah Lily, had the
dance-floor rockin' and shakin'.
Singer/songwriter George Borowski, with
vocal support of Cobalt Tales, plus drums and
bass, delivered some of his own songs which were a poignant
and dynamic combination. Bringing an entertaining set of popular
country music numbers to the show, Gill Coupe & The Leather
Chaps added to the party atmosphere.
Cobalt Tales
With a short guest spot, Milly Ballington performed a very
impressive set of more classics on guitar and keyboards.
Another group of vintage rockers and local favourites,
Vindictive, kept the party going and the dance floor filled with
more classic hits from the 60s & 70s.
Rounding off the event was the dynamic 'Little Miss Sixties',
Nancy Lee, with her keyboard player Anthony Lomas and a
superb set of favourites from the likes of Petula Clark, Dusty
Springfield, Sandy Shaw and Lulu. She was joined by guitarist
Chris Firminger, bassist Jon Wynn and drummer John Firminger
to provide the kind of finale this event deserved.
Also deserving a mention, was Dave Smith (of 'Openjawfair')
who engineered the sound equipment for this year's event,
occasionally 'swimming against the tide'! And thanks to the
Mayor, Coun Lillian Deighton, for opening the event.
