Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Fins Bar & Grille on the corner of Decatur Street and
Carpenters Lane in Cape May. Fins is open year-round and a spot we
frequently order takeout from. This time we traveled over for a special
lunch — Kayla who has been out on maternity leave made the trip to
Cape May to have lunch with Nicole and catch up. And she brought
her new little addition to the world to join us — baby Silas. Kayla’s little
bundle of joy has hit a whopping 10 pounds at a little over a month
old and he’s just the CUTEST thing. He has all of Kayla’s looks (sorry
Joe) and her quiet demeanor. Silas was probably the most well-behaved
month-old baby Nicole has ever enjoyed a meal with. That’s really not
saying much considering there aren’t any newborns in her life, but
that’s neither here nor there. He just enjoyed his milk and napped...
what a life this kid has already.
The conversation: Nicole and Kayla had A LOT to catch up about
— personal lives, fun events coming to the Filling Station and Ferry
Park, new faces at work and the usual gossip. One thing she’s enjoyed
seeing while away is how we’ve revved up the happenings between our
locations and fall is shaping up to be pretty exciting. Kayla loves seeing
some new content from a different perspective as EZ’s social media
— a huge portion of Kayla’s job that Nicole has been handling — has
also revved up with these events. Still, Kayla is excited to get back into
it and she returns to the office in January. You can bet that’s written in
BIG BRIGHT COLORS on both of our calendars. But in all seriousness,
enjoy every second with that new baby, we’re holding it down here.
The food: Kayla and Nicole went for their usual orders — a buffalo
chicken wrap and blackened chicken Caesar wrap. We both went for
fries with our wraps which isn’t part of the usual, but it was a special
lunch after all... at least that’s what we’re telling ourselves.
The takeaway: Fins never disappoints — it’s like our go-to spot all
year long. The food is great, and the atmosphere is welcoming whether
dining in or ordering takeout. They’re open from 11:30am Thu-Mon.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
It’s that time of year again, spooky time,
when everyone drapes everything
in those cotton cobwebs that snag on
your clothes and murders millions of
defenseless pumpkins and for what? To
use as decorations on your front porches. Like
a medieval warlord displaying the slaughtered
bodies of his enemies to warn off any other
hordes of Mongolian pumpkins that might
be thinking of storming your borders. Wait.
What was I talking about? Oh, right…
In keeping with the spooky theme of
October, The Undertow Players will be performing
my show, “Young Dracula,” at Exit
Zero Filling Station on Wednesday, October 19
at 5pm and 7pm, the proceeds of which will go
to fund the annual West Cape May Christmas
parade, which apparently costs a lot of money.
The play is quite silly and was conceived as my
sort-of spiritual sequel to Young Frankenstein,
one of the funniest films ever made. While my
little play has no such aspirations, you’ll find
a few things to chuckle at. And if you don’t,
you’ll be supporting a good cause.
Young Dracula was the first show we did
at the Exit Zero Acropolis in 2020 and it went
over like gangbusters. If you were unable to
make it then, now’s your big chance to right
this great wrong. If you did see it in 2020,
well, we’re hoping you’ve forgotten enough of
it (or, unlikelier, loved it so much) you’ll want
to come see it again. Although, honestly, a fat
vampire singing Elvis songs is pretty hard to
forget, I’ll admit.
Anyway, these shows are always a good
time and if you’ve been wanting to heckle me
as I heckle you every week, your opportu-

They actually will go pretty quickly so get in
there as soon as possible. I’m certain it will
go down as one of the great theatrical performances
of all-time. Or at least that week. Or

The dodgy weather forced the Terry
O’Brien Trio inside at Exit Zero all weekend
so at least we didn’t enrage the neighbors for
a couple of days (they’re one more out-oftune
version of “Me & Bobby McGee” from
lighting the torches and grabbing the pitchforks).
We also had a couple of amazing guest
singers come up for a few songs. Patricia
Durante, an actress I tried to hire at Elaine’s
in 1993 (!!!) and with whom I’ve since become
Facebook friends did some Patsy Cline on
Friday. (I asked her if she needed the lyrics
to “Crazy,” then remembered she does a onewoman
Patsy Cline show. Derp.) On Saturday,
Victoria, whose last name I didn’t get, teamed
up with Cathrine for a killer version of “Killing
Happy Hour

Canceled Gig of the Week:
The Terry O’Brien Trio will NOT
be making their debut at Jester’s
Dive Bar tonight, a scheduling
snafu on my end. Instead we’ll
be there on Thursday, November
10, 730-11 for the first time. For
the three of you that might have
been planning on making the trek
to Exit 4.
The Terry O’Brien Trio also
had a great time recording a
show for WCFA last week. Annie
Walsh had us over for her “It’s All
Good” show. We sang a bunch
of songs and drank a bunch of
her hard seltzers, which is why
things may sound a little sloppy
in the second hour. Regardless,
we appreciated it and maybe we’ll
do it again some time. You can
hear some of the cuts in regular
rotation on the station. In fact,
I caught Cathrine’s version of
“Girl Crush” while I was out on
delivery Thursday morning and
it took a few seconds to realize
it wasn’t the original track. She’s
that good.
I don’t really care about the
whole Lizzo dust-up (I understand
both sides.) I am, however,
going to do my best to make
James Madison’s Flute! a new
thing like Great Caesar’s Ghost!

of the 80s. The current reboot,
Confess, Fletch, starring renowned

neither of those things, but it’s a
perfectly enjoyable way to kill an
hour-and-a-half.
At first I thought those
cheapo five-blade razors were a
total joke for weirdos, but now if I
shave without one it feels like I’m
dragging two moderately sharp
rocks across my face.
The number of pounds I have
to lose by New Year’s Eve has held
steady this week (mid-to-upper
30s), but I WILL have that number
down to 20 by November 1st.

under 30. Certainly lower than
35. THAT I CAN PROMISE YOU!
As a man settling into my
50s, I’m used to having aches and
pains for no reason, but the crick
in my shoulder had a crick in
its shoulder last week. Seriously.

degree my entire left side

Where is Dr. Sam Beckett? If you
have to ask, “Who is Dr. Sam
Beckett?” then you’re not a
“leaper.” Oh, that’s what the fans
of the show were called.
Quantum Leap was a quirky sci-fi show
that premiered in 1989 and lasted four seasons.
In the show, Scott Bakula stars as Dr.
Sam Beckett, a physicist who discovers how
to time travel by placing himself in other
people’s bodies. Seems far-fetched. Hey, they
don’t call the show Quantum Leap for nothing.
Let’s add to the quirkiness. In each episode,
Beckett “leaped” into someone new—
the timeframe could have been the 1950s or
1940s—and the people he leaped into were
male or female and from all walks of life. In
every case, there was something in the people’s
lives that needed to be made right.
During these adventures, Beckett had the
help of a project colleague, Admiral Albert
“Al” Calavicci, played by Dean Stockwell. Al
would appear to Beckett as a hologram that
only Beckett could see (well… some animals

and children could, too). Yep, the whole premise
of the show became that much quirkier.
Last month, Quantum Leap made its “leap”
to modern television. See what I did there?
In the new series, Dr. Ben Song (played by
Raymond Lee) is running lead on the revitalized
time travel project. Leapers, are you
psyched? Oh, come on, afraid of being called
a geek? That probably happened in high
school anyway. In the first episode, Dr. Song
steps into the leap machine and goes back to
the 1980s. Nobody on his staff knows why,
especially colleague and girlfriend Addison
(played by Caitlin Bassett). She appears as
the hologram now. New twist: Dr. Song has
amnesia since he leaped. Why did he leap?
Whoa, was I totally geeking out during
the first episode and thinking, “Will they find
Sam Beckett?” When the series ended in the
1990s, it was abrupt with only a title card that
read Beckett never returned home. So sad.
Bakula stated officially in “Variety” that he is
not going to appear on the new show. Sounds
like he’s positioning for a better contract…
He’ll take part if the series takes off.
The critics are being harsh on the new
series — audiences, too. But don’t be so full of
yourselves, people! The first episode was lots
of fun, great acting, and a moving memorial
to actor Dean Stockwell, who died last year.
C’mon… Leapers Unite! Embrace your inner
geek and let’s see where this new adventure
takes us! The show appears on NBC and
streams on their app.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
The best thing about going to the Cape
May Hawk Watch. Is the great variety
of birds and migrating insects
you’ll see. We’re equal opportunity
observers. Migrating songbirds like
bobolinks, shorebirds like Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, and migrating monarch butterflies
and saddle-back dragonflies are also tallied.
And if your bird watching interests incline
toward forest songbirds, the cedar trees just
north of the Hawk Watch platform are guaranteed
to offer glimpses of migrating warblers,
red-breasted nuthatches and Red-eyed
Vireos. It’s fall in Cape May, “the migration
mainline.” No place offers a greater volume or
diversity of migrating wildlife.
You need not be an expert bird watcher.
Shared interest, not experience, is the coin
of tribute in birding’s realm. But the person
you find yourself seated next to may be one of
birding’s most celebrated personalities. They
and the seasonal naturalists will be happy to
share their insights with you.
Which brings up the next best thing about
going to the hawk watch, people. On any
given day there will be 50-100 visitors present
including experts like the Breslows and newcomers
like yourself. Unlike other forms of
birding, hawk watching offers lots of opportunity
for ample socializing.
Last week, I was lucky enough to run
into two of my favorite regular visitors, Prof.
Doug Gill and Dr. Joe Jehl, retired biologist
and author of the “Birds of Churchill.” Both
Maryland residents, they are good for hours
of insightful conversation. The inimitable
Vince Elia is a perennial visitor and discussion
when Vince is on deck invariably inclines
toward Eagles football. Conversations on the
platform vary day to day just as the mix of
visitors varies day to day. Do you like privacy?
The upper left corner of the platform
is closeted away from the crowds and offers
close proximity to songbird migrants. There
is no best time to visit. Mornings are best
for songbirds, afternoons often set up a falcon
flight. Binoculars are very helpful for
hawk watching and days with broken to little
cloud cover and north to northwest winds are
best. But from September through November,
there will always be something worth seeing
no matter what the conditions. When you
hear the weatherman say the magic words
“approaching cold front,” clear your schedule
and get to the platform, it may transform your
life. Young birders and dogs on leashes are
welcome and for you seniors, the platform is
wheelchair friendly.

I
developed a soft spot for the Cape May
Lewes Ferry Terminal decades ago.
When I visited my mother in Cape May
with toddlers in tow, she would let me
sleep in and bundle the kids off to enjoy
a picnic breakfast while they watched the ferry
come and go. Then, as now, there was a small
playground, plenty of space to run around,
and one of the most beautiful views in the
area. It was lovely 20 years ago, and it just
keeps getting better.
Today, the area is known as Ferry Park.
It’s still a functioning ferry terminal, as it has
been since 1964, complete with services like
car rental and tourist information. About a
million passengers and 275,000 cars make the
trip between Cape May and Lewes Delaware
each year. Thanks to the people who bring
you Exit Zero and the Exit Zero Filling Station,
Ferry Park is also becoming a destination in
itself. It features three new dining options
— you can enjoy a quick snack at Cafe 64, a
gourmet meal at the Lookout, or something
in between at Boat Drinks and Exit Zero Ferry
Station. The Lookout is sure to become a
favorite place to celebrate special occasions.
Beautifully presented cocktails add a festive
touch to dinner, and to the sunset selfies being
snapped on the deck, where you can watch
the parade of boats passing by. Some dinner
guests find the parking lot confusing — you
have to pull right up to an automatic gate.
There’s a growing list of special events to draw
visitors who have no plans to board the ferry.
Traveling on the ferry is also great fun.
You’ll likely see dolphins on the 85-minute
trip, and you can stroll the decks and enjoy
the fresh air. Reservations are almost always
required, especially on popular weekends.
Book online early at cmlf.com. Fares are generally
$57 per vehicle for a round trip, with
charges of about $18 per person. All passengers,
including the driver, are charged, though
children under 6 are free and there are discounts
for seniors, military, and frequent travelers.
Bicycles are free with passenger fare.
There is a fuel surcharge of $6 per vehicle trip.
Check in an hour before departure, and make
sure that all passengers over 14 have identification.
The security presence surprises some
guests out of their vacation mindset — it can
be daunting or reassuring depending on your
attitude — but it’s not too intrusive. For more,

There’s no smoking. Snacks and drinks
are available on board. Pets are welcome but
must stay on the outside deck or in your
vehicle.

and enjoy a nice cocktail and a light bite from
their impressive bar menu. A new venue is The
Porch at the recently restored Inn of Cape May.
There is often a pianist inside, but if not, just
sitting on The Porch or at the bar is a lovely,
low-key venue, perfect for getting to know her.

mix who came to the shelter as a stray. She is
a little nervous around new people but warms
up when treated with patience and kindness.
Sapphire is learning behavior cues and leash
walking skills, slowly improving each day. She
would do best in a home with owners who are
willing to work on trust and security for her.
SCOOBY DOO came to the shelter when his
owners could no longer keep him. This active,
four-year-old boy has a lot of love to give and
would do best in a home that channels his
energy. Scooby loves walks and has excellent
leash skills. It would be ideal for him to be
adopted into a family with older children, no
cats, and willing to continue his training.
CHINA MARIE is a sweet girl whose owner
was no longer able to keep her. She is a
mature, seven-year-old girl looking for a calm
home when she can feel loved. China loves
long walks and has excellent leash manners.
Loud noises and wheeled conveyances make
her nervous and she prefers a home with no
cats and needs a slow introduction to dogs.
