IMAGES OF HALLOWEEN 

Historians appear to be on the same 

page in agreeing that Halloween as 

a celebrated concept began around 

2000 years ago as a Celtic celebration 

in Northern Europe primarily in Irland 

and Scotland called Samhain. It is 

observed as a time to celebrate the 

end of the harvest season and to 

welcome a new year. It was also a 

time to remember and reconnect with 

those who had passed on. This tradition 

from the Celtic holiday has been the 

primary inspiration for the celebration 

of Halloween in the United States. 

The images that have evolved to be 

associated with Halloween here include 

witches riding on a broom, black cats, 

which are associated with the devil, 

carved pumpkins called jack-o-lanterns, 

and trick or treaters, where children 

dress in costumes and go around their 

neighborhoods collecting candies and

fruit. Pumpkin growing contests were 

also prevalent. Norman Rockwell the 

artist illustrator created a painting of a 

young boy with his pumpkin entered in 

one of these contests. 

Halloween is also celebrated in Japan 

with a Kawasaki Halloween parade. This 

holiday primarily consists of street fairs 

and parties, One of the images that are 

characteristic of most of the Halloween 

festivities includes the pumpkin as is seen 

in this photo of a Japanese Halloween 

party.

in Italy Halloween is known as 

Oganisaanti or All Saints Day, It is 

recognized primarily as a religious 

celebration with food and parties, but it 

has also picked up the jack-o-lantern as 

one of the symbols of the day. 

Mexico’s Halloween is known as dia 

de Los murtis or day of the dead it is 

celebrated as a time to remember 

ancestors. It involves parties, food, and 

religious ceremonies. One of the primary 

images from this time in Mexico is the 

decorated skull. 

All of these celebrations on an 

international level are celebrated during 

the early fall season and although there 

are varied traditions and images each is 

traditionally a celebration of the harvest 

and remembrances of ancestors. Some 

of these traditions may seem archaic 

but Halloween is still a popular holiday 

in the U.S. and other countries. Why not 

dress up in a provocative costume and 

have fun it’s time to live again as Covid 

is hopefully ending and life can resume. 

TRICK OR TREAT...... 

in Guatemala, the time of Halloween is 

called, barriletes gigantes, or the giant 

kite festival. People there visit graves 

of their ancestors and pray along with 

partys with giant kites.

Tom Swann is a legally blind veteran’s 

activist who has been a leader in civil 

rights and political causes since 1972. 

He has turned his AIDS status and HMO 

Horror Story that caused his blindness 

to rally and uplift veterans to support 

the Democratic Party. Three members 

of Congress nominated him to serve 

on the Presidential Advisory Council 

on HIV and AIDS for the next vacant 

position. Tom was appointed to the U.S. 

Department of Veterans Affairs HIV and 

AIDS Community Advisory Board. 

In his role as a chaplain’s assistant 

Swann will meet with sick patients and 

make a spiritual assessment of their 

needs. He will offer to pray with the 

patients. He will become a witness Swann has met with both Coretta Scott 

to their suffering. Swann will give Holy King and Rosa Parks and marched with 

Communion to Catholics. Swann has the late Cesar Chavez.

of the Desert will host its annual Center 

Stage gala on October 21, 2022, at the 

Palm Springs Air Museum to raise funds 

for its ongoing work throughout the 

Coachella Valley. 

Following the post-COVID return success 

of The Center's annual gala last year 

that transformed one of the Palm Springs 

Air Museum's hangars into a lavish 

ballroom of celebration and recognition, 

Center Stage is returning this October 

with the inclusive theme of "Together We 

Rise," honoring and uplifting the united 

solidarity of the LGBTQ+ community 


from Palm Springs to the Salton Sea 

amid these unprecedented times, with 

a particular emphasis on the upliftment 

of the trans community, as highlighted 

by the gala's light blue, pink and white 

color arrangements. 

"We want to bring our community 

together in solidarity and elevate one 

another," says Rob Wheeler, Executive 

Director & CEO of The Center, "and 

we want to do it in a fun, positive, and 

joyous way, which is why we chose 

'Together We Rise' as our theme for 

this year's gala. It is also why we chose 

Jeremy Hobbs of the Western Wind 

Foundation and Planned Parenthood of 

the Pacific Southwest as our honorees, 

for all the critical work they do for the 

Coachella Valley community in these

shared stages with Melissa Etheridge, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and many other iconic 

female artists; and Brian Justin Crum, the top-charting queer singer-songwriter and 

former America's Got Talent finalist whose breakout Broadway role in Wicked led to 

a soaring career performing with Queen and sold-out worldwide concerts as a solo 

artist. 

Alongside the entertainment will be the dazzling catering of Palm Springs' iconic 

LULU California Bistro. This year's gala is set to be more exclusively limited on 

attendee count, allowing a more vibrantly interactive experience between all in

VIRTUAL GALLERY 

This month I have been working with the concept of Cubism. Cubism was 

introduced in the art world by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Marcel 

Duchamp. Duchamp’s painting titled “Nude Descending a Staircase 

is probably one of the most viewed in addition to Picassos’ Guernica. There aslo 

are numerous other artists who have used the cubism technique. 

The two paintings I have included in the Virtual gallery were completed by 

drawings done of different models. 

On this page, I have an acrylic painting titled “The Restless Recliner”. For this, I used 

several drawings of a model 

in various reclining positions. I then overlapped them and gave them a geometric 

format. 


This page has a watercolor acrylic titled “Intimate Encounters”. For this painting, I 

borrowed models from my Friend Biron. 

Biron is a photographer who has access to a variety of models that will pose in 

intimate positions. I used his photographswith some modifications to create this 

cubistic painting again with overlapping figures. Biron has photographed models in 

the Palm Springs area several times including at my house. His work is visible under 

BIRON. 

These paintings are for sale as originals and prints. The dimensions 

are 12” x 15.5” for each. Each original is $300. Prints are on archive 

paper in the same size at $40.00 each. Framed originals or prints are

Jeff Grubbe to be 

Honored with Alumni 

Spotlight Award 

PALM SPRINGS, California Monday, 

September 26, 2022 –– Jeff L. Grubbe, 

outgoing Tribal Chairman of the Agua 

Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, 

has been named the recipient of the 

inaugural Palm Springs Unified School 

District Alumni Spotlight Award. The 

prestigious Award honors a distinguished 

Palm Springs Unified School District 

alum whose contributions to the 

Coachella Valley community is worthy 

of recognition, commendation, 

and celebration. The Award will be 

presented at the upcoming event, “ONE 

NIGHT OUT – HAVANA NIGHTS,” a festive 

celebration on October 1, 2022. 

Grubbe spent more than 10 

years as Chairman of the Tribal 

Council. During his tenure, the Tribe 

successfully achieved several notable 

accomplishments, among establishing 

the Richard Milanovich Fellowship 

at George Washington University; 

partnering with the Smithsonian’s 

National Museum to provide insight and 

guidance for exhibits on the American 

Indian; an increase in generous and 

diverse philanthropic funding in our 

community. Additionally, Grubbe 

oversaw the successful Tribal creation 

of the Palm Springs Unified School 

District’s Native Studies curriculum. 

This pioneering program, a unique 

collaboration between the District, The 

Foundation for Palm Springs Unified 

School District and the Tribe, received 

national recognition from the American 

Indian Economic Development Project 

at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy 

School of Government. 

“I’m a proud 1995 graduate of Palm 

Springs High School, and I am deeply 

honored to be a recipient of this 

Award,” said Jeff L. Grubbe, former 

Chairman of the Agua Caliente Band 

of Cahuilla Indians. “This recognition 

is really the outcome of the Tribe and 

the Foundation working together to 

find opportunities that result in the 

betterment of our community, through 

education. Our curriculum project in 

partnership with the Palm Springs Unified 

School District and the Foundation is 

not only setting the stage for others 

to follow, but it’s setting the course 

for greater understanding about the 

Tribe and who we are right here in our 

community, a place that we have 

called home since time immemorial. 

It’s removing all stereotypes and 

misconceptions our community has 

had about my Tribe and our people. For 

that, I am truly grateful. This all started 

with my friendship with Ellen Goodman 

and conversations we’ve had about 

the Tribe and Education. Thank you, 

Achama.”

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER GALA FEATURING A 

CONCERT PERFORMANCE

City Senior Center (CCSC) will hold its A 

Night to Remember Gala, presented by 

Steve Tobin, Johnny Krupa & the Grace 

Helen Spearman Charitable Foundation, on 

Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 6:00 pm. The 

event will take place in the Cahuilla Ballroom 

at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa, 32250 

Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. Tickets are 

now available. 

Hosted by Emmy-award winning anchor 

Peter Daut of KESQ TV, the gala will raise the 

funds necessary to continue the center’s 

mission of assisting all seniors, from active 

to homebound, by providing services that 

channel energy, relieve suffering, and protect 

health, happiness, and wellbeing. Community 

Impact Awards will be presented at the event 

to recognize those who have made significant 

contributions to improving the lives of seniors 

in Cathedral City and the community at 

large. This year’s honorees are David Mizener 

& Arturo Carrillo/Contractors State Licensing 

Schools and Chuck Leachman & Mickey 

Feigelson. 

The event will feature a concert performance 

by Grammy winner and three-time Grammy 

nominee Jody Watley. A previous recipient 

of the BMI Medal of Honor, Jody Watley was 

inducted into the Women Songwriter Hall 

of Fame in 2022 along with other notable 

songwriters including Marilyn Bergman, Gloria 

Estefan, Indigo Girls, Siedah Garrett, and 

Loretta Lynn. Her vision -- the trendsetting, 

forward thinking marriage of high fashion 

and street fashion with music in the 80s -- long 

before it became the norm -- along with her 

fusion of jazz and underground club culture 

-- demonstrates her keen pop instincts and an 

ease with which she crossed, and still crosses, 

genres. Jody Watley forged the template that 

is now in everybody’s playbook. 

The evening includes an exciting live auction 

with unique dining experiences, special date 

nights for a year, a Saks Fifth Avenue shopping 

adventure, relaxing stay-vacations, and more. 

In addition, there will be a $100 runaround 

for a chance to win a 5carat tennis bracelet 

valued at $10,000 from El Paseo Jewelers.

the Executive Board of the CA Democratic

Proposition 1 - YES Protects the fundamental 

right to reproductive freedom, defined as 

the right to abortion and to choose or refuse 

contraceptives, by adding these rights 

directly into the California State Constitution. 

Proposition 26 - NEUTRAL Legalizes sports 

betting at American Indian gaming casinos 

and licensed racetracks. 

Proposition 27 - NO Legalizes online sports 

betting. Out of State corporations would 

get 90% of the profits leaving little to fight 

homelessness. It also directly attacks the 

sovereignty of CA Native Americans. 

Proposition 28 - YES Provides additional 

funding for the arts and music K-12 

education in public schools. 

Proposition 29 - YES Dialysis patients deserve 

protection under the law. Prop. 29 will 

help ensure they receive safe treatment in 

dialysis clinics under the care of a doctor or 

another highly trained clinician in case of 

emergencies, without risk of infection, and 

without discrimination. 

Proposition 30 - YES Taxes annual personal 

income over $2 million to fund wildfire 

prevention, clean air and climate change 

programs. NOTE: Governor Newsom and 

others are opposed, but the CDP voted Yes 

with little debate. 

Proposition 31 - YES Protects kids from Big 

Tobacco by upholding the current ban 

on the sale of candy-flavored tobacco 

products, including e-cigarettes and mintymenthol 

cigarettes, saving countless lives 

and hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars
