338 Chapter Fifteenwith the Ford antitheft system, a four-button transmitteris used. The additional button is marked“Panic” and allows the driver to activate the alarmin an emergency. The system operates essentiallythe same as the Delco RKE system described inthe following section.GM Keyless Entry SystemsIn 1993, GM introduced a Passive Keyless Entry(PKE) system on the Corvette. In this system, akey-fob transmitter locks the doors as the personcarrying it walks away from the car, and unlocksthem when the carrier comes close to the car again. The owner does not even need to push a button.Other GM vehicles use the Delco RemoteKeyless Entry (RKE) or Remote Lock Control(RLC) system. The key fob contains a radiotransmitter with three buttons (Figure 15-36)that allow the driver to lock or unlock the doorsand trunk lid from outside the car. The transmittercontains a random 32-bit access code storedin a PROM; the same code is stored in a receivermodule located in the trunk. This receiverdetects and decodes UHF signals from the trans-mitter within a range of approximately 33 feet(10 meters).Depressing the DOOR button on the transmittersends a signal to the receiver. If the signal containsa valid access code (VAC), the receiversupplies battery voltage to the lock relay coil. This energizes the lock relay, which sends currentto the door lock motors. The LH door lock motoris grounded through receiver terminal B andinternal contacts; all other motors are groundedthrough the unlock relay contacts in the door lockrelay (Figure 15-37). When the lock function isused, the receiver grounds circuit 156, turning onthe interior lights for two seconds to indicate thatthe doors are locked. If the transmitter UNLOCK button is depressedonce, the receiver sends battery voltage to the LHdoor lock motor, which is grounded through thelock relay contacts in the door lock relay, and onlythe LH door is unlocked. To unlock all doors, theUNLOCK button must be depressed twice. At thissignal, the receiver also sends battery voltage tothe unlock relay coil in the door lock relay. Thisenergizes the unlock relay, which sends current tothe other three door lock motors. The lock relaycontacts in the door lock relay provide ground forthe motors, which unlock the doors. When theunlock function is used, the receiver also groundscircuit 156 to turn on the interior lights for approximately40 seconds, or until the ignition switch isturned to the RUN position.Depressing the trunk lid release button on thetransmitter signals the receiver to supply batteryvoltage at terminal H. This current energizes thetrunk lid release solenoid, allowing the trunk lidto be opened. However, if the ignition is onand the transaxle position switch is not in Park, battery voltage is not supplied and the trunk lidcannot be opened.Figure 15-36. Delco Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) orRemote Lock Control (RLC) system radio transmitter.(Delphi Automotive Systems)Current 2002-2003 GM KeylessEntry SystemsThe keyless entry system (Figure 15-38) is a supplementaryvehicle entry device; use the keylessentry system in conjunction with a door lock key.Radio frequency interference (RFI) or dischargedbatteries may disable the system.Keyless entry allows you to operate the followingcomponents:• The door locks• The rear compartment lid release
