20th Anniversary Bilingual Scholarship Awardees
CKY’s 20th Anniversary saw a number of students recognised for
their excellence in English and Chinese bilingualism. Two of the
fortunate scholarship recipients reflects on the importance of bilingualism
below, and shares her appreciation for winning this significant award.
I am really grateful and honoured to have received the
Bilingual Scholarship.
I definitely relate to the struggles that many of us face,
such as having to switch “channels” in our brains and
blanking out when having to translate certain words in
your head.
However, I think that being bilingual has countless
benefits and could mean a lot more than just an extra
ability to list on a resume. When you think beyond
studying the language in a classroom, it is something
that will accompany you throughout life. Other than
being able to communicate with people that speak
either language, you can immerse yourself in both
cultures, whether it be in the form of books, poems, or
songs. I also read that it helps you become a better
multitasker and has cognitive benefits.
I still remember the ECECE competitions from
primary. Being brought up in a bilingual environment
at school, I love reading, appreciating literature, and
writing in both languages.
Again, I am extremely thankful for this award and will
continue to work harder.
我 覺 得 學 習 語 ⾔ 的 過 程 是 ⾮ 常 漫 ⻑ 的 , 因 為 要 反 覆
地 練 習 中 英 ⽂ 的 聽 說 讀 寫 之 所 有 範 疇 , 才 能 徹 底 掌
握 ⼀ 種 語 ⾔。 在 閱 讀 ⽅⾯, 我 會 把 握 ⻑ 假 期 ( 例 如
暑 假 ) 的 時 間 看 ⻑ 篇 ⼩ 說 ,⽽ 平 時 也 會 多 閱 讀 散
⽂、 詩 歌 等 篇 幅 較 短 的 ⽂ 體 , 持 續 積 累 新 詞 彙 。 在
寫 作 ⽅⾯, 我 會 積 極 參 與 不 同 中 英 ⽂ 寫 作 ⽐ 賽 ; 這
能 讓 我 學 習 更 多 寫 作 技 巧 , 提 升 即 場 構 思 ⽂ 章 的 能
⼒。「⼭ 外 有 ⼭,⼈ 外 有 ⼈」, 參 與 校 外 ⽐ 賽 的 活
動 , 亦 令 我 能 ⾒ 識 到 其 他 寫 作 「⾼⼿」, 與 他 們 互
相 交 流 和 學 習 令 我 獲 益 良 多 。 除 此 之 外 , 我 會 在 空
餘 時 間 多 寫 簡 短 的 ⽂ 章 , 不 但 能 記 載 我 平 時 的 ⽣
活 , 更 可 以 鍛 練 ⽂ 筆 。
在 學 習 語 ⾔ 的 過 程 中 , 我 慢 慢 發 現 語 ⾔ 並 不 只
是 ⽤ 來 回 答 考 試 題 ⽬ 的 「⼯ 具 」; 對 我 來 說 , 它 最
有 趣 的 地 ⽅ 是 實 際 ⽣ 活 中 的 應 ⽤。 語 ⾔ 與 我 們 的 ⽇
常 ⽣ 活 息 息 相 關 , 倘 若 它 不 再 存 在 , 我 們 就 會 無 法
分 享 ⾃⼰ 的 觀 點 , 無 法 與 他 ⼈ 溝 通 。 精 準 的 語 ⾔,
運 ⽤ 在 ⽇ 常 ⽣ 活 之 中 尤 其 重 要 ; 很 多 近 義 詞 雖 然 字
⾯ 意 思 相 近 , 但 有 截 然 不 同 的 ⾔ 下 之 意 與 ⽤ 法 。 由
此 可 ⾒, 語 ⾔ 的 藝 術 能 幫 助 我 們 準 確 地 表 達 ⾃⼰ 的
觀 點 , 避 免 引 起 誤 會 。
