EDITORIAL
Dear readers,
Talking about God – theology – does not take place in a sterile
vacuum. Because it is practised by human beings, it is – thank
God and inevitably – confronted with the issues of our time and,
if it is to remain relevant, it must respond to and act within the
rapid developments in our society.
Who are we – as individuals, as a society, as a continental and
global population? How do we want to live? Which political
systems serve people in their striving for freedom, self-realisation,
community and solidarity? How do we humans (male, female, diverse) relate to each other? What
is our relationship with plants and animals? And what does this mean in terms of how we relate
to each other and to them? In addition, technological progress and the various highly complex
forms of artificial intelligence that we are creating are already having a serious impact on our
everyday lives. What opportunities, but also what limits, do we recognise in this – for example in
the field of medicine?
The new theological collection published by Karl Alber addresses these and numerous other
questions in a well-founded and interdisciplinary manner. The age-old religious/philosophical
question of how God is to be conceived of and what his possible relationship to the world might
be is continually being drawn into the present.
I hope you enjoy discovering our publications!
From a Christian perspective, it cannot be reasonable
for us in our time and society to inflict pain, suffering
and harm on animals to an unprecedented extent.
Instead, they should be respected as fellow creatures
and beings of dignity. Anne Käfer puts forward this
thesis on the basis of the Protestant understanding
of creation.
The author discusses questions of animal ethics in
a debate with influential theological and relevant
philosophical positions such as those of I. Kant, P.
Singer and M. C. Nussbaum. In a richly argued and
easy-to-understand manner, she explains how challenging
it is for humans to deal appropriately with
the animals they keep as livestock, pets or laboratory
animals.
The Letter to the Hebrews presents a unique eschatology
between space and time embedded in an
artful symbiosis of philosophical and theological
thoughts, with its author developing his very own
eschatology within the New Testament. Its peculiarity
is expressed in the interweaving of perfect,
present and future statements. Their interpretation
suffers from the difficulty of grasping the limitations
of these statements and their relationship to each
other, a challenge which this book takes up. In an
exegetical case study of the primary text (Heb. 1–13),
the author examines relevant statements on the
understanding of time and space, taking into account
their complementary relationship.
Transformation dynamics have reached an unprecedented
level of complexity in recent years. Transformation
takes place in at least two directions,
namely starting from social formats and focussing
on social formats. This book analyses comparable
challenges in various denominations in fields of work
such as preaching, pastoral care, charity/diaconia
and education, in each case in their constellations
with civil society and the public.
All kinds of predicates are attributed to God. However,
it is not clear what meaning can be assigned to
them when they are taken out of the human context
of application and used to make statements about
God. It is also often necessary to clarify how intended
meanings can be derived from religious and theological
expressions. This collection examines this
array of questions from an interdenominational and
interdisciplinary perspective and explores more recent
as well as classical and neglected possible answers
regarding their potentials and limitations.
How does the Qur’an construct ideas and norms of
gender? Nimet Şeker delves into the fundamental
Quranic concepts of gender, exploring whether a
divine hierarchy between genders is established. The
book investigates how pre-modern and contemporary
exegetical thinkers have shaped and negotiated gender
images. It sheds light on diverse hermeneutical
and exegetical approaches, including those of classical
and feminist scholars, and their impact on gender-specific
interpretations. This work is intended for
individuals interested in exegesis, theology, Islamic
and religious studies, as well as gender studies.
The political dimension shapes its respective counterpart.
It can polarise in the forms of friend–enemy,
good–evil and peaceful–threatening, as well as emphatically
as a platform for the mediation of knowing–acknowledging–recognition.
In ‘recognising’, two
people cancel out each other’s otherness by seeing
not only what is different about the other being, ‘but
themselves in the other’. The polarising–political
dimension is overrepresented globally and in the
media. There is a need for approaches that contribute
to an unprejudiced and objective debate, also and
Max Rohstock examines the metaphysics of the
Neoplatonic tradition and J. G. Fichte. Firstly, he
finds love to be the central principle on which the
philosophy of Plotinus, Proclus, Dionysius, Eriugena,
Cusanus and Fichte is based. Secondly, he demonstrates
that the metaphysical speculations of Neoplatonism
and Fichte do not merely coincide in
certain aspects. Rather, they demonstrate profound
systematic parallels that help to understand why
the often-proclaimed abyss between pre- and
post-Kantian philosophy is misleading. Both theses
are justified on the basis of the often-misunderstood
concept of metaphysical transcendence.
With his philosophy of transcendence, Karl Jaspers
is considered one of the few great metaphysicians
of the 20th century. This study is devoted to the
roots of his transcendental thinking in the philosophy
of Plotinus (c. 204–270). It demonstrates the
constitutive role that reference to the philosophia
perennis played for Jaspers, as well as his early and
intensive engagement with the founder of Neoplatonism,
who for Jaspers was ‘the metaphysician par
excellence’. His connection with Plotinus opens up
fascinating new perspectives on Jaspers’ concept of
existential self-emergence as an ascent to the One,
and on his henological philosophy of reason and his
speculative paradoxical thinking about God.
The contributions in this volume address topics such
as dialogical ethics, interreligious dialogue, the phenomenology
of love and interpretations of transcendence.
They demonstrate the immense influence of
Rosenzweig’s life and work on philosophy and Jewish
thought. Malcolm Goldman also presents a new
translation of Rosenzweig’s ‘Globus’.
AnthropoLog. Reflexionen des Menschlichen /
AnthropoLog. Reflections on being human
Edited by Prof. Dr. Janina Loh, Prof. Dr. Arne Manzeschke and Prof. Dr. Thomas Wabel
For centuries, the question of ‘man’ has been at the centre of theology and philosophy. Increasingly,
however, it is becoming apparent that this question is only gaining in profile in characteristic refractions
and promises people further answers. This series focuses on the religious, philosophical
and cultural implications of fundamental anthropological questions. With this common focus,
the series deliberately places works from a disciplinary perspective in an interdisciplinary context.
It also welcomes studies from other disciplines, provided that they adopt the question of man’s
self-image as a guiding principle.
Care, assistance systems and
the question of the human being
Kick-off conference for the series AnthropoLog.
Reflections on Being Human (Karl Alber Verlag, Baden-Baden),
edited by Janina Loh, Arne Manzeschke and Thomas Wabel
In many respects, current developments in the care
of people who are dependent on support are pushing
the boundaries of humanity: people in need of
care often experience thoughtless breaches of
boundaries in their dependence on other people.
Carers often reach the limits of their own resilience
in their work. Finally, the use of assistance systems
in care is shifting the boundaries between care services
of human and non-human authorship. In all
these cases, it is also important to reflect on the
concept of boundaries themselves from different
perspectives and to gain a possibly different view
of people from there.
The explorative conference will bring together practical
theoretical approaches from the specialist
perspectives of nursing science, medicine, philosophy
and theology. The hope is to be able to understand
the boundaries named as enabling the discourse
of the human beings. If this succeeds, this
endeavour to reach an understanding will also
transcend the respective disciplinary boundaries.
The event marks the programmatic start of the AnthropoLog
book series from Karl-Alber-Verlag, which
reflects on what is considered human in the face of
new challenges. The project is based on the conviction
that the centuries-old philosophical and theological
question of the human being gains its contours
where it is refracted in the specific perspectives
of other scientific disciplines – be it in medicine,
psychology, the cognitive sciences, gender and postcolonial
studies, science and technology studies or
aesthetics. The guiding principle is the idea that the
new developments in these disciplines are so enriching
that they repeatedly draw attention to the
question of how people constantly try to understand
themselves anew.
Theologie und Gesellschaft / Theology and Society
Edited by Prof. Dr. Michal Bayer, Prof. Dr. Martin Nugel, Prof. Dr. Piet van der Keylen and
Prof. Dr. Kathrin Winkler
The Theology & Society book series presents key research projects initiated by the Institute for
Theology and Society (ITG) at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg (EVHN).
The series is dedicated to in-depth theological and ethical reflection on social processes and current
discourses, focussing on the responsibility of theology for the social public sphere.
The book series includes a wide range of research projects that shed light on current social
challenges. From the responsibility of the Protestant Church to educate on democracy and the
confrontation with right-wing populism and racism to the examination of migration and religion
– each publication offers a well-founded theological and ethical perspective on complex topics.
Other focal points include (inter-)religious education, post-colonialism, climate justice, inclusion,
family, poverty, ageing, human rights in care practice and borderline cases in medical ethics.
NEW SERIES
Feminismen. Positionen und Perspektiven /
Feminisms. Positions and Perspectives
Edited by Dr. Gloria Dell’Eva, Dr. Anne Weber, Prof. Dr. Veronika Weidner
Feminist perspectives are not only part of the self-image of integrative sciences but are now firmly
anchored in discourses in the humanities and social sciences. In recent years, feminist-oriented
research projects have also been funded, positions established and disciplines developed in philosophy
and theology in the German-speaking world. At the same time, initiatives identified as
feminist have repeatedly experienced a socio-politically and religiously motivated backlash, insofar
as they have been explicitly or subtly discredited. The series of publications Feminisms. Positions
and Perspectives aims to promote the visibility of systematically oriented philosophical and theological
monographs and anthologies which, in their elaboration of feminist theses, encourage an
epistemologically nuanced and ethically committed formation of judgement and thus strengthen
constructively critical contemporaneity.
Digital developments have become a defining factor
of our time. The enormous technological achievements
are accompanied by huge ethical questions.
From an interdisciplinary perspective, this book,
Digital World – Artificial Intelligence – Ethical Challenges
illuminates problems that arise through the
use of digital technologies and offers approaches
to solving them. The 13 original contributions come
from mathematics, physics, the philosophy of technology,
law, medicine, education and theology. The
book is aimed at readers who are interested in anthropological
issues and an in-depth look at social
processes of digitisation.
‘Progress’ is a dazzling concept used to describe
developments in all areas of life. Progress is of particular
interest in the sciences, where it manifests
itself in innovations in the natural sciences and
technology, for example. Whether one trusts in progress
and looks hopefully into the future or longs
for a golden past and distrusts progress depends on
the observer. Modern science cannot be separated
from the hope for progress and new knowledge. In
this book, examples from different sciences are used
to look at progress in those fields. In addition, the
scientific environment, in the form of the communication
and promotion of science, is also taken into
account.
Everyday morality hardly plays a role in ethical theories.
Yet everyday life is precisely the context in
which most of our lives take place. This book is an
attempt to make the phenomenon of everyday morality
visible, to clarify it conceptually and to discuss
the value and necessity of everyday morality.
In this book, the course and dynamics of the public
moral discourse and the role of theological ethics
are examined on the basis of interviews, taking the
topics of surrogacy and euthanasia as examples.
Immanuel Kant as an interpreter of St Paul. Fichte
as an interpreter of the Gospel of John. Hegel as a
philosopher on the life of Jesus. This book shows
how mysticism, scholasticism and Reformation theology,
as well as Christian subject philosophy, Jewish
panentheism and liberal Enlightenment, and finally
democracy, Christianity and ethics are connected.
Especially in times in which religion is losing ground
in Europe, in which the postmodern ideals of alterity
and plurality are in crisis and in which social
cohesion is breaking down, this reflection on modern
metaphysics takes on a provocative explosiveness
and opens up a new perspective for both theology
and philosophy in the current time of change.
This book presents the different shifts in emphasis
within the methodological discourse on the great
transcendence in phenomenology since Husserl and
Heidegger. As it searches for answers among the
various phenomenologists, it deals with the question:
Can there be points of contact or even a reciprocal
relationship of stimulation between the phenomenological
method and religious dimensions
of meaning? Can phenomenology at the same time
develop a form of epistemology for theology?
What is the “Kirchenlexicon”, the vast collection of
reflections that Franz C. Overbeck (1837–1905) gathered
throughout his life with the intention of writing
a never accomplished “profane Kirchengeschichte”,
really about? Better, what did it turn out to be in
Overbeck’s last years? Who was “this” Overbeck?
Who “is” this Overbeck? Is Overbeck a theologian?
These are some of the critical questions that this
book seeks to answer.
