EDITORIAL
Dear readers,
Talking about God – theology – does not take place in a sterile
vacuum. Because it is practised by human beings, it is – thank
God and inevitably – confronted with the issues of our time and,
if it is to remain relevant, it must respond to and act within the
rapid developments in our society.
Who are we – as individuals, as a society, as a continental and
global population? How do we want to live? Which political
systems serve people in their striving for freedom, self-realisation,
community and solidarity? How do we humans (male, female, diverse) relate to each other? What
is our relationship with plants and animals? And what does this mean in terms of how we relate
to each other and to them? In addition, technological progress and the various highly complex
forms of artificial intelligence that we are creating are already having a serious impact on our
everyday lives. What opportunities, but also what limits, do we recognise in this – for example in
the field of medicine?
The new theological collection published by Karl Alber addresses these and numerous other
questions in a well-founded and interdisciplinary manner. The age-old religious/philosophical
question of how God is to be conceived of and what his possible relationship to the world might
be is continually being drawn into the present.

Instead, they should be respected as fellow creatures

thesis on the basis of the Protestant understanding
of creation.
The author discusses questions of animal ethics in
a debate with influential theological and relevant
philosophical positions such as those of I. Kant, P.
Singer and M. C. Nussbaum. In a richly argued and

it is for humans to deal appropriately with

The Letter to the Hebrews presents a unique eschatology
between space and time embedded in an
artful symbiosis of philosophical and theological
thoughts, with its author developing his very own
eschatology within the New Testament. Its peculiarity
is expressed in the interweaving of perfect,
present and future statements. Their interpretation
suffers from the difficulty of grasping the limitations
of these statements and their relationship to each
other, a challenge which this book takes up. In an
exegetical case study of the primary text (Heb. 1–13),
the author examines relevant statements on the
understanding of time and space, taking into account
their complementary relationship.

Max Rohstock examines the metaphysics of the
Neoplatonic tradition and J. G. Fichte. Firstly, he
finds love to be the central principle on which the
philosophy of Plotinus, Proclus, Dionysius, Eriugena,
Cusanus and Fichte is based. Secondly, he demonstrates
that the metaphysical speculations of Neoplatonism
and Fichte do not merely coincide in
certain aspects. Rather, they demonstrate profound
systematic parallels that help to understand why
the often-proclaimed abyss between pre- and
post-Kantian philosophy is misleading. Both theses
are justified on the basis of the often-misunderstood
concept of metaphysical transcendence.

In many respects, current developments in the care
of people who are dependent on support are pushing
the boundaries of humanity: people in need of
care often experience thoughtless breaches of
boundaries in their dependence on other people.
Carers often reach the limits of their own resilience
in their work. Finally, the use of assistance systems
in care is shifting the boundaries between care services
of human and non-human authorship. In all
these cases, it is also important to reflect on the
concept of boundaries themselves from different
perspectives and to gain a possibly different view
of people from there.
The explorative conference will bring together practical
theoretical approaches from the specialist
perspectives of nursing science, medicine, philosophy
and theology. The hope is to be able to understand
the boundaries named as enabling the discourse
of the human beings. If this succeeds, this
endeavour to reach an understanding will also
transcend the respective disciplinary boundaries.
