Hoppo aka Charlie Hopkinson
“All these pictures are selfies,” insists the artist, Hoppo. Quite a claim, though
My Bedroom was an Island in a Sea of Pink Wallpaper, might resonate with some. Or not.
Either way, Hoppo says he only paints what he has known.
Surviving the Void does appear to incorporate some home truths for a painter who appears
determined to forge a solitary path. His 2020 exhibition in the gallery, Steplines, was very
much a (walking) journey as Resonance appears to be too, beginning with his arrival in Wales
in 2020. References to voids make one wonder if it’s solitude that is embraced rather than
shunned, or perhaps the void refers to the imposed pandemic lockdown during which many
of these pictures were created.
Abstract paintings invariably hold elements of mystery that titles go some way towards
(though rarely the whole way) revealing. The rest is down to the viewer. “A picture either
resonates or it doesn’t,” Hoppo states. Beyond that? “I don’t know, but Braque summed it up
so well when he wrote: ‘The only thing that matters in art is what cannot be explained.’”
We naturally strive for explanations and understandings – the meaning of life, what’s beyond
the universe, what does this painting mean? If we could jump off that bandwagon for a
moment, and simply savour the experience of looking, of being curious, of feeling rather than
understanding, then we might feel more at ease with the mystery of abstract paintings.
“Many of these paintings don’t mean anything, the artist says, “but if they resonate with the
viewer that’s everything I could ask for”. Perhaps the provocative title of the beautiful pink
painting, Look, I’m not Trying To Make a Point Here,’ sums up Hoppo’s approach to his work?
Something says that there’s a little more to it than that, but that it’s up to us to find our own
way around this exhibition.
