XPLORER MAPS: OUR STORY

One day, when Chris Robitaille was six years old, he was driving his mom crazy. She said, “Chris, go take a nap!” He

thought she said, “Go make a map”. By accident he went away, made a map, and came back with a pretty awesome

map detailing how he got from his bedroom down to the kitchen to where the cookie jar was. That was his very first

map and so the journey began!

Today, Chris is still drawing maps, except now, his maps lead him beyond the cookie jar, to places all over the world

highlighting the history and culture, detailing the landscapes and “telling the stories” through art of these amazing

places. While his days of driving his mother crazy are long gone, he’s joined forces with his geography buff of a

brother, Greg, to share his maps with the world and connect people with place.

Together they launched & built Xplorer Maps ~ creating the world’s finest hand-drawn and hand-lettered illustrations

of national parks and other significant historical sites and travel destinations throughout the world. Every line, letter

and icon is entirely unique and original on each custom map created.

THE ARTIST

Philanthropy/Public Lands

BULLET Originally from POINTS Toronto, Canadian-born of PLA artist partners

Chris

Robitaille graduated from the prestigious Ontario College

of Art. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Toronto Life

Magazine Award for Excellence in illustration.

He began his professional career at DDB Needham

Worldwide Advertising working as a storyboard artist

where his client list included Coca-Cola, Levi’s, Labatt’s,

Porsche, Volkswagen and Time Magazine. While

vacationing in Kenya in 1992, Chris fell in love with its

people, landscapes and wildlife….and stayed for more

than twenty years! In addition to his love for realist oil

painting, Chris also discovered a passion for creating

hand-drawn maps of numerous African countries.

Since 2000, Chris (along with his wife Vanessa and their

children, Max and Becca) has traveled the world living in

Canada, Kenya, China, United Arab Emirates, Thailand

and now Doha, Qatar for another year of adventure. This

incredible diversity of culture and landscapes inspires

his artistic creativity and deepens his sense to “tell the

stories” connecting people and place.

In 2010, Chris co-founded Xplorer Maps with his brother

Greg. Chris acts as the Creative Director and sole artist

personally responsible for every intricate detail on each

map custom crafted by hand.

XPLORER MAPS for a long time; in fact, we

were the original collaborative partner that

created this custom map for our park! They

give us great customer service, get back to us

immediately on all inquiries/orders and have

great stock levels. We’re excited to see all

their new products for 2022 so we can add to

our Xplorer collection.

G

SMA has partnered with XPLORER

MAPs for the last 6 years. We actually

participated in the collaborative custom

map development from the outset and love

the result. We get great customer service

from them and they are very good at hitting

delivery deadlines. The new products for

2021 are doing extremely well this year and

we look forward to seeing their new lines for

2022.

Custom Map Partnerships

We were initially drawn in by the Xplorer

hand-drawn map of the Great Smoky

Mountains. The images were beautiful,

unique, original and iconic; we simply didn’t

have anything that depicted Shenandoah

in that clever a way. We’ve excitedly

collaborated on a new interpretive, custom

product that is proving to be a big hit with

our visitors.

Greta Miller, Executive Director ~

Shenandoah National Park Association ~

Luray, VA ~ Public Lands Alliance

Xplorer Maps beautifully portrays the

iconic landscapes, animals, plants,

and landmarks of an area. Locals and

longtime visitors to the Central Coast

honor the uniqueness and beauty. Now

they have a tangible item that tells the

story of why and what they love about

these places.

Kristin Howland, Executive Director ~

Central Coast State Parks Association ~ San

Luis Obispo, CA ~ Public Lands Alliance

Alaska Geographic enjoyed working with

XPLORER MAPs developing the Alaska map.

They do amazing original hand-drawn artwork

and were willing and able to modify their custom

artwork to fit the geographical changes our parks

have undergone. The new line of mugs, puzzles

and blankets are selling very well and we’re

looking forward to working with them in 2022 as

they roll out more new products to share with our

visitors!

Clare Tilley, Regional Manager/Buyer ~

Alaska Geographic ~ Anchorage, AK ~

Public Lands Alliance

In 2016, we approached brothers Chris and

Greg Robitaille, Xplorer Map co-founders,

about developing a hand-drawn, educational

map of the Black Hills. The collaborative

and original design is now printed on several

products including best-selling blankets,

puzzles, mugs, shots and totes. BHPFA sales

of these unique items have raised enough

funds for Xplorer Maps to donate $5,000 in

2022 targeted specifically for our new Student

Scholarship Fund. Thank you, Xplorer Maps!

MAPS

Xplorer Maps CONNECTS PEOPLE & PLACE! We create the world’s finest illustrated

maps drawn entirely by hand; every line, letter, and icon is uniquely original to each

new map we render. Every map and illustration is the certified, authentic work of

world-renowned wildlife artist Chris Robitaille.

These unique and fully custom maps are crafted in an antiquarian, old-world style that

is intended to pay homage to the early cartographers. Using a meticulous pen & ink and

watercolor process, each map is uncompromising in its attention to detail and highlights

the unique fauna, flora, history, culture and geography of the featured region.

Xplorer Maps seeks out collaborative partnerships with PLA organizations

(publiclandsalliance.org) to create all of our National Park maps. This

process results in an entirely custom, unique and original product that

is fully vetted and approved by the respective organizations and their

National Park Service representatives for educational merit, historical

accuracy, cultural relevance and interpretive value.

Southern Nevada Conservancy worked last year with Xplorer Maps in partnership

to create the beautiful Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area map.

We had a lot of fun along the way with the process. We ended up with a great,

beautiful interpretive product that is going to really tell our story to our visitors.

were a huge hit with everyone and became

instant conversation pieces. Thanks SO

much from the very happy newlyweds.

We love working with XPLORER MAPS! They

give us outstanding customer service;

diligently checking in to see how we’re doing

(which we really appreciate because the short

commissioned exclusive original art of our store
