Dear friends of Peggy Adams,
A LETTER FROM
SUE BERRY,
CEO
I’m so excited to write my first letter for The Shaggy Sheet, a publication
that so many look forward to. It’s an honor to join such an amazing team of
dedicated animal lovers as Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s new Chief
Executive Officer. Having worked for over 20 years in animal welfare, first in
New Hampshire and most recently California, I am excited to now offer my
knowledge and leadership to Palm Beach County.
As you flip through the pages of this edition, you will read recent stories of
all the great things happening at Peggy Adams. I hope you enjoy the Happy
Tails submitted by adopters, the recent artwork contest winners from our
Education Department, and so much more.
We like to point out our Mission Moments. These are special stories that
highlight why Peggy Adams is here and doing this important work. Our two
Mission Moments are about animals needing special medical care and who
are now thriving thanks to our medical team and foster volunteers.
We are also so grateful for you, our supporters. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League is what it is today, because of you. Your caring, compassionate and
generous support enables us to make an impact on thousands of animals’ lives
each year. Please join me in congratulating our 2021 Volunteers of the Year
featured on page 17.
I look forward to connecting with you and am eager to work with you to build
upon this incredible organization.
On behalf of the animals – thank you!
MISSION MOMENT: A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE
Tator is a very special dog that was
transferred to Peggy Adams from the
University of Florida (UF) in July.
The Veterinary Community Outreach
Program (VCOP) at UF, which is their
shelter medicine outreach program,
pulled Tator from Gilchrist County
Animal Services. He is a senior hound
dog that had Caval Syndrome. Caval
Syndrome is a typically fatal, end-stage heartworm
disease. A mass of heartworms blocks parts of the
heart and the vena cava interfering with normal blood
flow and causing heart failure. The treatment for Caval
Syndrome is surgical removal of the heartworms.
relationship with their shelter medicine program and
because they know that we can handle complicated
medical cases. On July 14 th , Tator made his way
from Gainesville to West Palm Beach. He is currently
undergoing heartworm treatment. Usually, most dogs
are placed on the adoption floor while they are going
through their heartworm treatment. However, due to
the severity of Tator's case, he was placed in a foster
home. Once he completes his heartworm treatment,
Tator will be available to adopt.
Tator with the UF Team
Tator during surgery
When Tator arrived at UF, the cardiology department
removed some of his heartworms which took him out
of heart failure. This surgery only has a 50/50 success
rate, and we are thrilled to report that he survived!
VCOP reached out to Peggy Adams due to our close
Tator and foster dad, Emilio
It’s very important to make sure dogs are routinely tested and are on medication to prevent heartworms.
PEGGY ADAMS ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE
WELCOMES SUE BERRY, CAWA
AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Most recently, Sue served as Director of Operations
for Woods Humane Society in San Luis Obispo,
California where she oversaw all aspects of animal
care, intake, adoptions, behavior and training, and
facilities maintenance at two locations. While there,
she was able to implement innovative adoption and
intake processes, more than tripling their adoption
numbers and increasing their lifesaving work.
“I am very excited to be joining such an
amazing team of dedicated animal lovers.
Having worked for over 20 years in animal
welfare in New Hampshire and California,
I am eager to bring my knowledge and
leadership to Palm Beach County,”
said Sue Berry. “I look forward to
working with our staff, volunteers,
and supporters to build upon this
incredible organization.”
Sue with her pets, Mason and Dudley
Sue began her career in Animal Welfare as a
volunteer for the New Hampshire SPCA in 2001.
She joined the staff there in 2004 as Director of
Administration and served for over a decade working
to support the welfare of animals in New Hampshire
and beyond. She was a leader of the organization’s
Disaster Response Team and served on the Board
for the New Hampshire Federation of Humane
Organizations. Sue enjoyed working directly with
pets of all shapes and sizes from birds to horses during
her tenure.
Sue is a graduate of Daniel Webster College with a
Bachelor of Applied Science in Management and
Information Technology. She became a Certified
Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) through
the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement
in 2020.
Sue now lives in Loxahatchee with her husband, four
COUNTDOWN 2 ZERO
Making strides in Palm Beach County
Organized in 2014, Countdown 2 Zero (C2Z)
is a collaborative partnership with Peggy Adams,
Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control
(ACC) and Palm Beach County’s Board of County
Commissioners to end the unnecessary euthanasia
of pets in our community by 2024.
Back in 2014, ACC was saving 73% of their dogs
and 29% of their cats. With a lot of effort and
many programs expanded and created, by 2021
the dog save rate increased to 91% and the cat
save rate improved to 81%. This equates to 1,613
fewer dogs and 5,230 fewer cats euthanized than
in 2014. The national benchmark used to indicate
a “no-kill” community is 90%. Since 2018,
Palm Beach County’s dog save rate has been at
or above 90%. The cat save rate is steadily
improving, but there is still much work to be done.
Walk Mascot FELINES IN FLIGHT
Summer is Kitten Season in Florida and at
Peggy Adams – we have had a busy year! To help
alleviate the pressure of the continuous flow of
kittens through our system, we have been working
to coordinate rescue flights to the northeast where
kittens aren't as readily available. We’re excited to
share that a flight of 155 kittens and cats lifted off
on August 2 nd .
This was a collaborative effort with Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League, the Humane Society of the
Treasure Coast, the Humane Society of Vero Beach
and Indian River County, and the Humane Society of
Broward County. The airlift was part of Greater Good
Charities’ Good Flights program and was funded by
Hill’s Pet Nutrition and The Animal Rescue Site.
received by Northeast Animal Shelter, and
MSPCA-Angell, and Monadnock Humane Society.
They were then placed up for adoption.
The largest percentage of kittens and cats on this
flight were from Peggy Adams with 106 total! We are
hopeful that this will be the first of several flights in
the coming months.
After departing the Fort Lauderdale
Airport, the chartered plane arrived at
the New Bedford Regional Airport
in Massachusetts. The cats were
CORPORATE CORNER
We always greatly appreciate the philanthropic
efforts local businesses and corporations organize
to benefit the animals at Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League.
For the past few years, The Ritz Carlton on Singer
Island has selected Peggy Adams as their charity
of choice for a donation drive. From left to right,
pictured here are Don Neff, Anastacia Hoover,
Brenda Williams, and Missy Cohen delivering a
packed car of much needed items. Thank you!
All of us at Peggy Adams would like to give a special
shout out to Pet Supermarket for their “Lend A Paw”
Campaign. Through the month of May, all local
Pet Supermarket stores collected donations and sold
bandanas, all of which benefitted Peggy Adams.
On June 22 nd , they organized a check presentation
ceremony for us at their headquarters in Sunrise,
Florida. The campaign generously raised $15,989.76.
Thank you to everyone who participated. Pictured
NATIONAL SHELTER DOG AWARENESS DAY
Peggy Adams’ Education Department was
selected as one of the finalists in the inaugural
National Rescue Dog Day "To the Rescue!" campaign.
The goal of this campaign was to create awareness
about the compassionate work we do, while receiving
assistance with funding to support programming.
Peggy Adams was invited to be part of the campaign
because of the partnership with Tails that Teach,
an organization that inspires young children to be
kind to pets and people. They partner with animal
organizations that provide humane education, and
elementary schools that provide character education
by donating compassion-centered books to use as
reading tools in their programs.
MISSION MOMENT: NELLIE'S STORY
Meet Nellie, a tiny puppy who’s
beating the odds thanks to her foster family.
Nellie was born with a cleft palate. For newborn
puppies, having a cleft palate is a major obstacle
to healthy growth and development. Without
intervention, puppies with cleft palates often struggle
to nurse and face a risk of pneumonia. That’s where
our medical team and Nellie’s foster family come in!
Nellie came to us the day she was born. Our medical
team worked quickly to bring her body temperature
up and ensure that she was stable. Once Nellie was
warm and stable, she was ready to eat. However,
because of her cleft palate, Nellie could not drink from
a bottle. Instead, she had to be carefully tube fed every
few hours, around-the-clock.
We are so thankful that foster Julie M. and her
family stepped up to provide the specialized,
around-the-clock care Nellie needs! Nellie is growing
stronger daily thanks to her foster family’s love and
care. When Nellie is old enough, she will have surgery
to correct her cleft palate, allowing her to eat and drink
on her own. Until then, she’s in the best hands with her
foster family. Go Nellie Go!
Interested in becoming a foster?
Our biggest need for fosters is for cats,
kittens, and special care cases.
HAPPY TAILS
Bindi, Adopted 4/13/22
“Bindi is the sweetest, sassiest, and most talkative
queen! She loves food and is always willing to try
something new. She loves frozen cucumbers, peanuts,
and cheerios. Her personality is bigger than the
world! She loves to cuddle, not only with me but her
cat boyfriend, Voodoo (and play of course). She has
learned the commands of sit, paw, and up (which I
was very shocked and impressed by). And lastly, she
seems very fond of water. Every night when I wash my
face, she’s on the sink next to me, asking me to wash
her face too! Bindi is the best cat I could ever ask for
and I am so lucky she came into my life.” – Olivia
Charm, Adopted 3/30/22
“When we adopted Charm, we had just put our
furbaby Spunky down due to brain cancer. We were
in shock, but then Charm came into our lives. I can
honestly say that she saved our lives and is our therapy
dog. Charm is the best dog ever with a personality
that never ceases to amaze me! I'm amused watching
her play with her toys and her antics. We can't imagine
our life now without her. She has never been left alone
since we brought her home, and I can honestly say she
is spoiled rotten. I don't know what Charm's life was
like before we adopted her or why she ended up in the
shelter. I can tell you that she is in a loving home and
a part of our family! I'd like to thank you for bringing
her into our life.” – Terri and Eric
Simba, Adopted 3/9/22
“I was a cat owner for 17 years. My dear cat Puffy
passed away on Feb 1, 2022. I decided not to get
another pet because it was so emotional for me.
However, after a few weeks I started thinking about
it, as I missed the presence of having an animal
around to love and take care of. I went on Peggy
Adams’ website and at first glance fell in love with
Simba’s face. My husband and I went down to the Pet
Supermarket in Delray Beach, and we decided to take
him home. Simba is a loving, easy going and very
accommodating cat. He has even won the heart of
my husband who generally isn’t a cat lover. I was able
to train Simba to sit and lie down. We love him very
much and he’s a happy little kitty now.” – Tania
HAPPY TAILS
Bo, Adopted 3/5/22
“Bo has totally adapted to his new environment and
has brought so much fun and love to our family! He
loves walking in our friendly neighborhood and made
3 new doggy friends this week! There are so many fun
things we continue to learn about Bo all the time, like
when he does 'Superman' leaps from the recliner to
the couch when you come home, or when he takes a
dog-toy bone and buries it in the couch cushions! Bo
has been such a blessing and we are truly grateful to
have him in our family. Thank you so much for all you
do for our furry friends!” – The Kupisz Family
Queenie, Adopted 4/11/22
“My dad adopted Queenie in April and we can't
believe how fast the time has gone! Queenie is such
a sweet dog, whether she is cuddling with you on the
couch or giving you hugs. She adores her pink queenie
collar that is decked out with a crown pattern and a
bow. She also enjoys new toys, getting yummy treats
and going to the dog park where she can play with all
her new friends! Queenie loves being loved and has so
much love to give! Thank you so much for Queenie.
She is the best girl ever!” – Samantha
HUMANE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Peggy Adams’ Education Department held its 3 rd
Annual Art from the Heart Contest celebrating
“Summer Fun with your Pet”! It was a fun and creative
way for children of all ages to be able to get involved
and express their love and appreciation for animals.
As we all know, the future of animal welfare rests with
the youth that we reach today.
Participants were challenged to illustrate how they and
their pet (or maybe a future pet) enjoy the summer
together. The artists were able to use any medium
including paints, markers, crayons, pencils, mixed
media… and limited only by their creativity.
Once their artwork was created, it was posted on a
website where the public could vote for their favorites
($1 donation per vote). This creative fundraiser raised
over $1,700 to support programs at Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League.
Thank you to all our participants!!!
Artemis by Valencia C.
Artemis is the Goddess of wild animals, the hunt and
vegetation. She also represents the childbirth. Deer is the
sacred animal for Artemis. And, my work expresses and
connects the immensity and nobility of all animals
as one.
Summer Wagon Ride by Bethany B.
My dogs, Prince & Hotdog, and I enjoy going on an
afternoon wagon ride. I rollerblade while pulling them
behind me letting the wind go through their fur in the little
red wagon. They sit like good boys and enjoy a nice
treat and some cold water when we get home!
KIDS CORNER
It’s always a great time to instill philanthropy in children.
It's not only for adults or the wealthy, but anyone trying to
make a difference through charitable actions.
These kids are PAWSOME! Mrs. Nero’s 5 th grade class at
Morikami Park Elementary School hosted a donation
drive of dog and cat toys for Peggy Adams, bringing so
much happiness to the animals in our shelter. We love to
see the younger generation’s passion for animal welfare.
Thank you to Mrs. Nero and her class for being champions
for the animals!
Want to host your own donation drive? For more information, please visit
A GREAT WAY TO GIVE BACK...
Get Involved as a Project Group!
We’re seeking dedicated and compassionate
groups who are looking for meaningful ways to
donate their time to help animals in need. Local
businesses, schools, churches, and organizations
welcome!
Volunteer opportunities include helping at special
events, completing large projects on our campus,
making enrichment toys for our animals, and
so much more. These projects are great for team
building, learning about animal welfare, and giving
back to the community.
The Breakers began a Project Group in April as part
of their social impact program. Since then, they
have volunteered in our animal care, foster and
humane education departments for a total of
216 hours.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints volunteered with our animal care
department in June and July for a total of 92 hours.
