years after her original diagnosis.
For relapsed Hodgkin lymphoma
in a non-pregnant patient,
chemotherapy and/or targeted
immunotherapy are often used,
usually followed by a bone marrow
transplant, which is curative for
most patients.
Q: When during her pregnancy
did you see her?
A: We saw her at 18 weeks into
her pregnancy, when she was very
ill with a large mass in her abdomen.
It was a life-threatening situation.
Fortunately, after the first
trimester, most chemotherapy is
safe for the patient and fetus. She
improved rapidly after two cycles
of chemotherapy, so in conjunction
with maternal-fetal medicine
experts, we recommended she
continue the pregnancy to term.
Q: Her condition worsened
again at 26 weeks. What
happened then?
A: After detailed multi-disciplinary
team care coordination
and discussion with the National
Cancer Institute, we treated her
with checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy
treatment, which is
approved by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). She did
incredibly well and gave birth to
a healthy baby boy at 38 weeks. A
few months later, she received a
stem cell transplant and is doing
well a year later. Throughout this
case, we were able to leverage the
expertise of collaborative teams
at the Rutgers Cancer Institute
of New Jersey, along with unique
relationships we have with other
colleagues around the country and
the world. The results were very
gratifying.
