A: If patients continue to have hip or knee pain after exhausting non-operative treatments, the next step is to replace the joint. Over the past decade, changes in the way implants are manufactured have lengthened their lifespan and wear capability. Q: What does joint replacement surgery success depend on primarily? A: Often it is the degree of underlying arthritis they are experiencing. The patients who see the biggest improvements are those with the most severe arthritis and pain. I’ve treated patients who continued to have significant pain after multiple forms of non-operative treatment. After having a robotic knee replacement, they’ve returned for the same procedure to relieve pain on their other knee. It can be life-changing.
