FLOOR
Retooling the production floor simply means
reimagining the way students train at TSTC,
from pathways and micro credentials, to new
modalities and opportunities that meet the
needs of today’s students. Traditional college
models focus on credit hours and grades,
while performance-based education replaces
that old notion with demonstrated mastery of
essential knowledge and skills. Performancebased
education emphasizes value, flexibility,
convenience and applied learning that involves
frequent, substantive interaction between an
apprentice and an expert.
To scale this learning experience, TSTC
implemented shared service capabilities to
deconstruct every course’s learning objectives
into skills and competencies. Each skill and
competency is then calibrated with subject
matter experts to ensure training always aligns
with industry’s needs.
TSTC designed this new way of learning to
serve untapped markets that traditional
education struggles to reach. It is relevant to
non-traditional student markets such as working
adults, family caregivers, military veterans,
and college skeptics who seek relevance in
their time-on-task and value the shift from
transactional education to performance-based
education.
In fiscal year 2022, TSTC launched the first
phase of a 3-phase implementation of
performance-based education across all
programs. This includes the reconfiguration of
curriculum, labs, learning delivery, schedules,
and faculty talent requirements. The remaining
phases will launch over the next three years
with sustainability efforts to follow.
