Building resilience in residency…
Each issue of the GME newsletter will offer tips and resources from the
American Medical Association (AMA). These quick reads and videos will
provide golden nuggets to support you!
Nervous about your intern year? Three resident
physicians offer insight
The transition to residency is one of those drinkingfrom-the-firehose
situations, but you’re not the first
to go through it and here, you can learn essential
tips to succeed.
The Well-Being Index
To better support our team members, Wellstar has
joined hundreds of healthcare organizations to
provide The Mayo Clinic’s Well-Being Index – an
online self-assessment tool that measures five
dimensions of distress and well-being in just
nine questions.
• Anonymously measure well-being in less than
1-minute
• Predict risk of distress over six dimensions
• Provide immediate resources to participants
• Deliver comprehensive reporting to wellness leaders
• Track individual and organizational progress over time
If you think something needs changing or have an idea,
you’re probably not alone. Drop your suggestion in the
box conveniently located in the resident lounge. You can
shoot an email or talk to a coordinator, as well. Help us
help you! We don’t know what we don’t know, ya know?
Ahhhmazing Acts of Kindness
If there’s a resident who has gone out of their way to make someone’s day
a little brighter, please share! Just drop an email to Kennestone GME IM
Coordinator, Lori Murphy, Lori.Murphy@wellstar.org, with any act of
kindness toward a patient, intern, resident,
or other creature. #whoknew? #ahhhhmazing
you! #kennestoneresidentsrock!
Internal Medicine
Chief IM Resident, Blair Smith, M.D.
The ICU can be a not so fun place to be—and
that’s for the doctors (just kidding), so you
can only imagine how tough it is for the
patients that have to stay there for days…
weeks…months. I think that sometimes
making patients feel better requires things
outside of medicine. One of my passions
outside of medicine is music, so to share some
joy I played three songs for three different
patients while I was in ICU. Lucky Man by the
Verve, Wonderwall by Oasis, and Chasin You
by Morgan Wallen. Honestly, I messed up a
few different times with all of the songs but it
seemed to bring some joy to my patients and
that’s all that mattered to me at the time.
In other news…
The new and improved GME workspace affords computer stations, comfy
chairs, and great lighting. As we adapt to the acoustics, new interns, new
chiefs, and a new coordinator, please…
Speak softly when sharing information with your fellow residents. When two
or three people start talking, voices get louder making it difficult for others to
concentrate. Although you might be at the end of your shift and ready to talk
about your last patient, someone else may be coming off a difficult rotation
with complicated notes to scribe. Be mindful of your surroundings…if the
conversation goes beyond ten minutes or you’re catching up on a non-clinical
matter, consider moving to your resident lounge for snacks, drinks, and plenty
of “leftovers” for noshing while you catch up on that complicated patient
or the TikTok video produced by your undergrad roommate’s cousin’s sister.
Finally, KEEP IT CLEAN. Wellstar Kennestone GME used its funding to provide
this space for you. Those empty cups, cans, water bottles, and chips don’t
clean up themselves. Be respectful, please.
“Jarrell is diligent and a self-starter. She knows how to get things done and is always helping
others. She has a quiet disposition and is very caring. Jarrell took over this position at the onset of
the pandemic. Despite that, she quickly learned what needed to be done and took control. She is
dependable and always 2 steps ahead of me. She anticipates what I need, often without me having
to tell her. She is a joy to work with and I hope she continues to work with me for a long time.”
