MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Charitable giving and values such as justice, courage and hard
work are integral to life in the Sixth at St Mary’s.
As a Mary Ward School, we
nurture courage and resilience
in all our students and you will
have space to reflect on your
place in the world, as well as to
realise the power you have to
stand up for what you believe in.
There are plenty of ways to
make a positive difference
including: organising events
such as our Macmillan coffee
morning, running campaigns
to raise awareness, supporting
our outreach programme or
performing at our Boarders’
Concert to raise funds.
Many students complete the
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
to develop their sense of
independence and responsibility.
We have a high completion
rate for the Award and our
Sixth Formers inspire Bronze
and Silver Award participants
across Cambridgeshire,
as Ambassadors for this
internationally-recognised Award.
Through Girl Up, a global
movement founded by the UN
to promote gender equality, our
students connect with likeminded
young women to make
positive change to the lives of
girls in developing countries.
If you would like to be a social
justice pioneer, then join other
students on the CAFOD Youth
Leadership Programme in
Year 12 and gain the skills
and inspiration you need to
effect change.
ECO COUNCIL
St Mary’s Environment Action Group (EAG)
empowers girls to be leaders of sustainability
and biodiversity in our community.
The dynamic group is committed to the
continuous improvement of our environmental
performance, not only by improving the School’s
physical environment, but also by educating our
community about the importance of sustainable
development. The EAG has established
the weekly ‘ways to eco-engage’ initiative,
considering issues such as fast fashion, climate
TAKING THE LEAD
As you become more independent, you will gain responsibility –
both in your studies and in wider Sixth Form life.
In the SIxth, students lead by example, modelling our core
community values of compassion and kindness to younger girls
across our schools. Key leadership roles suit different individual
strengths and include: Head Girl, our prefect team, Music and
Games captains.
If elected to a leadership position, you will play a key role in many
activities – from helping with community outreach, to planning and
contributing to wider St Mary’s events.
If selected to join our School Council, you will gain first-hand
experience of democracy in action – discussing matters which
affect students across our school.
Using your initiative
If you have an interest or talent you would like to share … why not set
up a club or society for younger girls? Previous student-led initiatives
include MedVet Soc and clubs for Drama, Music and Politics.
Alternatively, you could co-ordinate external speakers, organising
events that enrich life in the SIxth by bringing fresh ideas and
inspiring stories from the wider world.
Encouraging enterprise
If you have a flair for business, then the Student Investor or School
Enterprise Challenges will hone your skills and you can meet likeminded
students in our Business and Economics Society. In Year 12,
aspiring accountants can enter the ‘BASE’ competition run by The
Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
Being a role model
As part of our mentoring scheme, you will be partnered with a
younger girl, as someone she can rely on for advice and support.
This provides a valuable insight into what it takes to be a good
mentor – a key skill for your future in employment and as a citizen.
