A VIEW
FROM THE TOUCHLINE
I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The
Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this
afternoon for our game against Dewsbury Moor Maroons
in the National Conference League Division Two.
We welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Maroons to Woolston and
hope that they have had a safe journey across here and enjoy our hospitality today.
We have started to hit form at the right time having claimed two wins and a draw from
our three games in August and this means that if we can beat Dewsbury today then
we are guaranteed to finish in sixth place and claim a trip to either Barrow Island or
Normanton Knights next weekend in the Play Off Semi Final.
As you will see today is a celebration of Rugby League at the club with our ‘A’ team
entertaining Burtonwood Bridge in The Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington
Alliance Cup Semi Final at 12.15pm and I am sure that it will be a cracking game. We
have been in fine form of late and that has seen us move upto third place in the NWML
Division Three table, whilst Bridge have finished top of Division Four South & East.
The winners of this game will face Crosfields ‘A’ or Burtonwood Chargers in the Final at
Victoria Park Stadium on Wednesday 28th September.
Following the conclusion of the NCL game there will be a Race Night in the club and
that will be followed at 7.30pm by Bonker’s Bingo. Tickets for the bingo are £12 each
and can still be purchased.
As you will see a little later in the programme Dewsbury Moor Maroons Assistant
Coach Mark Fortis is cycling to Woolston today from the Maroons clubhouse; this will
be ride number eleven of eleven that has seen him cycle to all of their away games this
season for charity. That is some achievement and I am certain that he will be given a
very warm Woolston welcome when he arrives; well done Mark!
On a very sad note the Woolston club were saddened to learn of the passing of Jim
Shaw (Grandad of Chris Mellor) and Paul ‘Willy’ Wilson (dad of Johnny). Both were
regulars on the touchline for many years supporting the club and they will be sorely
missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with both families at this sad time and a minute’s
applause will take place before both of today’s games in their memory.
Thanks for your attendance today and for your support throughout the season; we
hope to see you again next year. Why not bring a friend along with you next time and
introduce them to the Rovers!!!

Public Relations Officer
The National Conference League have announced that Irish Sportswear brand,
O’Neills, are to be their Sportswear Partner for 2022 and beyond.
This agreement will see O’Neills Irish International Sportswear provide touch-line
apparel for all 48 NCL clubs that will readily identify official team coaches, trainers,
physios, and substitutes. O’Neills will also provide a dozen water bottles for each club.
Speaking of the partnership, Paul Berry, O’Neills UK Sales Manager said, “When
Trevor and the committee asked us to consider working with the NCL, we jumped at
the chance. We identified an opportunity to help highlight official team touch line staff
through the provision of coloured t-shirts, in a similar way to that in Super League and
International Fixtures. It was felt it would help referees and match officials to better
manage the touchlines and we were happy to oblige.”
“The community game is the heartbeat of the sport and we have been fortunate
enough to have been able to do business with a number of the NCL clubs over the past
few years which has allowed us to build up a strong portfolio of customers within the
Rugby League sector.
You now see O’Neills kit at every level of Rugby League from grassroots Under 7s
teams right through to some of the top teams within Super League and the NRL.”
“Last year it was great to see St Helens being crowned Super League Champions
wearing our kit and for Penrith Panthers being crowned NRL Champions - also in
O’Neills kit, just ten years after we entered the UK market.”
“O’Neill’s Sportswear are proud to be known as the brand leader globally within Rugby
League and we certainly felt that we wanted to put something back into rugby league at
community level to support the clubs, their volunteers and their players.”
Chair of the NCL, Trevor Hunt, added “It is fantastic that a company of the standing of
O’Neills, is partnering the National Conference League, and we are delighted to have
them on board. Every one of the NCL clubs will benefit from this, and it will certainly
add yet another high-quality element to the presentation of our competition.”
We are looking for outgrown rugby boots
from sprogs to junior sizes!
Have your children outgrown their boots but they still
have plenty of games left in them?
Donate them to us and leave a little note in them to
pass on! i.e. won a competition tell the next child who
receives them to encourage them.
We will ensure these boots are passed on to
disadvantaged children who can’t afford to buy new
ones so they can continue playing the great game
and don’t miss out!

MARK FORTIS
DEWSBURY MOOR MAROONS ASSISTANT
Mark has cycled to Woolston today for charity, as he has done for all eleven away trips
the Maroons have had in the NCL this season; that really is some achievement when
you realise that Barrow Island, Beverley and Heworth are in our league!
He is fundraising for Kirkwood Hospice and also for Maroons Head Coach Peter
Robinson who got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the season.
Well done Mark on this selfless journey for such worthwhile causes from everybody at
Woolston Rovers and we all hope that Peter will make a full and speedy recovery.

WOOLSTON ROVERS 26 NORMANTON KNIGHTS 22
NCL 06/08/2022
Woolston Rovers produced one of their best performances of the season to claim a
very hard-fought win over an in-form Normanton Knights side in an exciting National
Conference League Division Two fixture at the Limestone Construction Field.
The Knights opened the scoring after four minutes when a high kick on the last tackle
bounced kindly for stand off Jacob Crossland to collect and score under the posts. Full
back Charlie Barker converted but then just after the midway point of the half Rovers
replied when prop forward Harry Files stepped round the defence to score. Full back
Aaron Barber converted to level matters at 6-6.
Shortly afterwards a great run by hooker Adam Files split the Knights defence and he
offloaded to H Files who sold an outrageous dummy and shot through the gap to score
and then just after the half hour centre Lewis Hoarty intercepted a Normanton pass and
raced clear to score under the posts. Barber added the conversion.
Right on the stroke of half time Normanton got themselves back into the game when
some slick passing saw the ball reach centre Jimmy Brown and he managed to force
his way over on the right with three defenders on him. Barker added the conversion to
make the interval score 16-12 to Rovers.
Five minutes into the second half a great ‘show and go’ from Rovers stand off Theo
Holt saw him create space to put Hoarty over in the right corner but then nine minutes
later Normanton responded when a kick on the last tackle was collected by winger
Arran Clark who scored in the right corner. Barker landed the conversion.
Just before the hour mark Rovers scrum half Dec Leonard took the ball to the line
and slipped an outrageous ball to centre Kieran Moore who scored under the posts.
Leonard converted and the Knights had Clark sin binned for dissent following the try
but while he was off the field his side managed to narrow the gap when winger Jack
Millward scored in the left corner to set up a grandstand final fifteen minutes.
As the game entered the final minute the Knights had Crossland sin binned for dissent
and Rovers were able to see the game out to register a richly deserved and very important
26-22 success that keeps them in the top six in the league table.
The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers prop forward Harry Files. He was very
well supported by centres Lewis Hoarty and Kieran Moore.

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ produced a magnificent performance to record a big win at Leigh East ‘A’ in
the NWML Division Three at Leigh Sports Village.
Rovers opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a try from centre Dan Griffiths. Scrum half
Jay-Jay Catterall converted but eight minutes later Leigh East responded with a try from winger

The home side took the lead for the only time just after the midway point of the half with a try from

crossed for a try. Catterall added the conversion.
Almost immediately Rovers were on the attack once again and Griffiths went over for a try and
straight from the restart they were over once again as full back Ben Roberts scored. Catterall
converted both tries but then just before the break Hodgson scored a try for Leigh East that was
converted by second row Connor Johnson to make the half time score 24-14 to Rovers.
Rovers started the second half well and were soon on the front foot and this allowed stand off
James Tarpey to score. Catterall converted but then East scrum half Ryan Green replied for the
hosts. Johnson added the conversion.
The points were secured for Rovers when impressive prop forward Ryan Palin scored. Catterall
converted and in the final minute Kenwright capped off a fine display for the visitors with his second

Woolston Rovers produced an excellent display to claim a very important victory at Beverley in
the National Conference League Division Two to keep their hopes of a play off place in their own
hands.
Beverley opened the scoring in the second minute when they created an overlap on the right and
that enabled centre Will Turnbull to score. Scrum half Joe Dudson converted but Rovers replied
fifteen minutes later when lovely hands between stand off Ryan Brown, second row Craig Lawton
and full back Theo Holt enabled centre Kieran Moore to shoot through a gap and score. Lawton
added the conversion to level matters.
Almost immediately Rovers were on the attack once again and a clever kick from loose forward
Scott Whiteley was collected by Moore and he sold a ‘dummy’ and went through the gap to score.
Holt converted for what proved to be the last scoring of the half as Rovers went in at the break
with a 12-6 advantage.
Six minutes into the second half Beverley substitute Josh Pooley crashed onto a bullet pass to go
over for a try. Dudson converted to tie the scores once again but then three minutes later Rovers
hooker Adam Files scooted from dummy half before offloading to second row Dan Fearnley who
scored. Holt added the conversion.
Just before the hour mark A Files made a fine break before finding prop forward Harry Files in
support to go over under the posts. Holt converted and four minutes later scrum half Dec Leonard
stepped round the defence to score under the posts. Holt added the conversion.
Rovers were now in total control and substitute Josh Sudlow made a great break before quick
hands from Brown and centre Lewis Hoarty saw winger Luke Turner receive the ball and race
away for a debut try. Holt converted and then in the final minute A Files put substitute Sam Wood
over under the posts. Holt added the conversion to complete a comprehensive 42-12 win for the

Woolston Rovers claimed a point in a highly entertaining end-to-end National Conference League
Division Two clash at Clock Face Miners to keep alive their hopes of a top six finish.
Clock Face opened the scoring in the sixth minute when full back Luke Forber broke clear down
the left hand side and fed the ball to hooker Kenny Hughes who scored under the posts. Loose
forward Shaun Costello converted but then just after the midway point of the half Rovers scrum
half Aaron Barber made a break and he found stand off Ryan Brown whose inside pass put prop
forward Harry Files over for a try. Second row Craig Lawton added the conversion to level the
score.
Five minutes later Rovers took the lead when a nice ‘tip’ pass from loose forward Scott Whiteley
put substitute Josh Sudlow over under the posts. Lawton converted but Miners hit back when a
short kick off saw them regain possession and substitute Michael Carney went over on the left to
make the half time score 12-10 to Rovers.
Two minutes into the second half nice play by Rovers saw Brown and full back Theo Holt combine
to send centre Lewis Hoarty over on the right but eight minutes later Clock replied when second
