The fire, emitting less heat than
just moments before, is still
sending embers out from its
core. He smiles as he watches
tiny moments of his past become
miniature comets, momentarily
becoming the center of his
attention before disappearing
from view, or burning out just
before disappearing into the
indistinguishable grey curtain
made up of fog and the serenity
of the waveless lake.
His wife wakes up and sees her
husband lost in thought. She
decides not to interrupt his
moment. Beyond the comfort of
her husband’s shoulder, the fire
pops and she notices an ember of
flame and ash disappear into the
water. She smiles. Here is a
