Rising Star; Callum Connell Callum is 17 years old and lives in Tauranga. He enjoys wildlife and landscape photography and has found a new lease of creativity through digital manipulation, resulting in his images being a combination of photography and design. CALLUM, TELL US ABOUT YOU AND HOW YOUR JOURNEY INTO PHOTOGRAPHY STARTED…. When I was 7 years old, my family and I spent two years living in England and travelling around Europe. When we first moved to England, my parents bought me and my sister our first devices – iPods. I loved the idea of taking photos and I would take them of all sorts of things wherever we went. At first, my photos were more based on keeping memories of England and our Europe trips than taking good photos, but after a couple of years of being back in New Zealand, I started getting an eye for taking better photos. When I was about 14, I got my first DSLR camera. I took it on any holiday we went on and even spent time taking photos of things in my backyard. I then decided in year 11 to take Art as a subject and focused my studies on photography, which took me to all sorts of different places not only in photography but also in digital manipulation. WHAT GEAR DO YOU HAVE TODAY? Today I have a camera bag which has my Canon 800D camera with its standard lens, a wide-angle lens, and a zoom lens. I also sometimes use a polarizing filter and a variable neutral density filter. I also have a tripod that I use often, and an extra battery. 6 September 2022 NZPhotographer
