MANAGER’S NOTES
We are six games in, having had
three at home and three on the
road, and there’s been plenty to
digest in this first month but what has
impressed me during the hectic start has
been the spirit of the players.
The buy in and determination from the
lads, in the face of adversity and some
testing challenges, is just what a manager
and a coaching team want to see. The
work ethic, purpose and togetherness has
been clear on the pitch and evident to me
with the approach to training at Shirecliffe.
Another example of the determination of
this team was apparent on Friday evening.
We didn’t get it all our own way in the first
half, but we passed the ball with more
intensity in the second and higher up the
pitch. Although we were disappointed not
to win, the old adage of making sure you
don’t lose came into play.
The game didn’t surprise me in the
slightest, it was first v second for points
amassed in 2022, Luton’s home record
is great and typically Nathan Jones had
them right up for it making it a big game
for them. We were prepared and their
threats came how we’d planned, we stood
up to them and were better in possession
in the second half.
It came at a cost, though, and our
injury situation is not relenting. Whatever
the reasons for the issues, and they are
varying, we have to muster on and use the
quality and quantity of the squad we have
put together.
We strengthened in the summer and
did some really good business; I think
supporters appreciate that. The plan has
not changed, and we’ll have to see what
happens late in the window, it’s a crazy
time. We have around 25 players who
will be needed, we want to keep the lads
together, but everyone has a price, we
know that, and sometimes decisions are
taken out of my hands – that is part and
parcel of football. Thursday night’s transfer
deadline cannot come quick enough, my
priority is to make sure the squad is right
and ready for the remainder of the season.
Before that, though, all our focus is on
tonight. We have done well in the first few
home games, and the crowd has played a
part in those performances, undoubtedly,
hopefully it continues tonight. Everyone
enjoyed the Blackburn game, we were
strong, good on the ball, created a lot
of chances and made it difficult for the
opposition, we want to be like that every
fixture. I appreciate it won’t always be
the case and some teams will make life
difficult for us – as Reading did last season
– but when we are on our game, on the
front foot, we will take some stopping.
Of course, the home form has
contributed to our position in the table.
We are not paying too much attention to
it at the moment, but it is a start, and we
are at the right end of what is a very tough
division.
OLLIE’S GOAL DELIGHT
Ahead of facing
one of his former
clubs this evening,
Ollie Norwood revealed
his delight at netting his
first of the season last time
out at Bramall Lane.
The former Reading
playmaker capped a
superb display against
Blackburn in S2 with
United’s opening goal in a
3-0 success.
The early contender
for goal of the season
certainly pleased Ollie,
who admitted his superbly
executed free kick was
something which had
been worked on behind
the scenes on the training
ground.
PLAYER FOCUS
He said: “It is crazy that
I can score from 25 yards
but not from the penalty
spot. It is something we’d
worked on, Sander was
going to go low under
the wall based on our
analysis, but they blocked
it and I just said to him I’ll
go goalkeeper’s side as
we knew he gambled and
luckily enough I struck it
sweetly into the far corner.
“It is lovely to score,
but even better to win.
I fancied my chances after
that because Kaminski
takes a very high starting
position and gives you the
opportunity to catch him
out. These are some of
the fine margins the staff
look at and pass on to us to
execute. It is crystal clear
what we are going to do
when we enter the field,
and we are carrying out
the gameplans well at the
moment.”
It has been a fine start
on home soil for the Blades
who have notched up three
wins from three at Bramall
Lane so far this season,
with the win over Blackburn
the highlight.
The experienced
midfielder also lavished
praise on goal hero
Iliman Ndiaye whose
brace ensured it was a
comfortable afternoon for
the Blades.
Ollie remarked: “It
was a really professional
performance, first half we
were totally dominant, but
it is always dangerous at
1-0 especially when we
expected a reaction from
them. We needed the
second goal to make it
more comfortable which
we got, the crowd relaxed
too, then Iliman turns into
Messi for the third one.
“Whenever he faces the
defender up you know he’s
got them in trouble, and we
just stand back and let him
do his thing.”
ILIMAN HAPPY
TO CONTRIBUTE
Striker Iliman
Ndiaye hasn’t
been getting
carried away with his
recent goalscoring
exploits, simply stating he
is just happy to contribute
to the team.
After scoring his first in
the 2-0 win over Millwall,
he was back on the score
sheet against Blackburn
last time out at Bramall
Lane, netting a brace after
coming on from the bench.
His second against
Rovers brought great
acclaim, as he recreated
his solo goal against
Fulham last season
with a devastating run
from his own half before
steering the ball past
Thomas Kaminski in the
Blackburn goal.
Iliman then produced
another hard-working
display in the draw at Luton
to continue a fine all-round
start to the campaign.
Despite his heroics,
Iliman cuts a humble figure
in interviews, showing
no sign of impatience
at being on the bench
initially against Blackburn,
explaining he’s happy to
contribute from whichever
position.
PLAYER FOCUS
He said: “The manager
makes the decisions and
decided to rest me (against
Blackburn). The other
lads have been brilliant
coming on in the other
games, so they had their
chance, and I was happy
to contribute coming off
the bench. Everyone has
been brilliant. Whenever
I play, I just try and get the
best out of myself and then
let the manager make the
decision.”
On the second goal,
the Senegal international
stated he wasn’t sure which
was best after recounting
his winning strike at Craven
Cottage last season.
He continued: “Travelling
with the ball - that’s me,
it’s what I do. I like doing
it. The more I practice it,
the more confident I am
doing it.
“It was the same as the
Fulham goal. It was just
composure with my left
foot. I didn’t look up to
see where the goal was
because I knew. I was just
trying to beat the ‘keeper
at the near post and that’s
what happened.
“I will have to re-watch
both of them and decide
(which is best)! This recent
one was good because
I beat two men, whereas
the Fulham goal, it was
more of a run. I’ll look back
and then decide!”
RHYS TAKING
ON ADVICE
There have been
many positive
words on Rhys
Norrington-Davies’ start to
the season, as he
continues to soak up all
the advice available in
order to develop in a
relatively new position.
There is no doubting
playing left or right centre
half for United is a unique
position, and after being
thrust into the left sided
area, Rhys admits he has
taken council from one of
the best.
Rhys revealed teammate
Jack O’Connell
has been tremendously
supportive, and the advice
has been paying off after
a string of top drawer
performances from the
Wales international.
He recently told SUTV:
“I’ve played there before
previously for my country
and whilst I’ve been out
on loan. It has been good
playing in this system
which gives me more
freedom to get forward, so
I am really enjoying it.
“Jack (O’Connell) has
been a massive help. He
has been in contact and
said if I need to go over
any clips with him, he’ll do
PLAYER FOCUS
that. I’ve seen him around
the training ground, and
he’s spoken to me about
particular games which has
been really good.
“The gaffer has told me
what he wants from myself.
First and foremost, I need
to be defensively solid and
then to join in and attack
when needed. That’s what
I’ve been trying to do.”
After starting every
league game so far, Rhys
will be hoping to maintain
his record after being
forced off during the
closing stages in the draw
at Luton.
In recent weeks, he has
been partnering Max Lowe
down United’s left flank
and whilst the former Luton
and Stoke loanee admits it
is still early days, it appears
it is a relationship which is
flourishing.
He stated: “It’s still early
days but we have a good
partnership. I have been
impressed with Max; he’s
starting to kick on now
which is great. The team is
playing well so hopefully
we can keep on getting
positive results. We just
need to kick on now
game-by-game.
“There’s a lot of
competition which is good
for the squad. It’s healthy.
Myself, Max (Lowe), Enda
(Stevens) - and then left
centre half there’s Jack
(Robinson), Jack O’Connell
and Clarky (Ciaran Clark).
That’s good competition
and that’s important.”
SITTING DOWN WITH
O L I Oli McBurnie
M c BURNIE
He’s our striker he’s our number nine –
scoring goals in the red and white!
Music to the ears of United’s Oli
McBurnie and certainly a rendition from the away
fans at Kenilworth Road which he would have
fully enjoyed after he bagged a well-deserved
equaliser against Luton Town at the weekend.
It’s his first since the League Cup tie against
Southampton at the beginning of last season as
the popular frontman has had to deal with illness
and injury over a frustrating 12-month period.
The Scotland international acknowledges the
S2 faithful have yet to see the best of him, but that
is something he is now looking to put right after
back-to-back formidable displays leading the line
for the Blades.
And he believes with the backing of boss Paul
Heckingbottom and his coaching staff, along with
several other adjustments to his physique, lifestyle
and mindset no stone will be left unturned as he
hopes to contribute to firing the Blades back to the
Premier League.
Now back in the goals following a fine finish
in the 1-1 draw against the Hatters, it’s all about
kicking on as he looks to back up his recent
performances against Reading tonight.
UTB 13
— UTB: How good does it feel to
be back in the goals again after
a terrific finish against Luton at
the weekend?
— OM: “You don’t lose that touch
of scoring, it’s maybe just a bit of
confidence. The chance against
Blackburn, maybe I had a bit too
much time whereas this one was
more instinctive. You have to do
what comes natural so to see
it hit the back of the net was a
wonderful feeling.”
— UTB: Does it feel that a
weight has been lifted from your
shoulders?
— OM: “To a certain extent. It’s
probably spoken about more
outside our dressing room rather
than inside. The gaffer and Jack
(Lester) have said to do the good
things which will keep you in the
team and the goals will come. It’s
a great feeling but it is the start
now, I need to kick on. It’s a big
year for me. I’ve worked hard to
get back into the team and now
it is my job to stay in the team.
I need to keep putting in the
performances and hopefully the
goals will come from it.”
— UTB: It was a tough game at
Kenilworth Road, how good a
point was that on the road?
— OM: “In past seasons, a lot of
the times these are the games
where we might not have picked
something up. It shows the
togetherness we have. I think it
was gritty. We’d do anything for
each other, you saw the boys
coming on and making an impact,
we are all together and here to
do something special.”
— UTB: You put in a very
impressive performance prior
to the Luton game in the home
win over Blackburn. You did
everything but score in that
game, what was the feedback
from the manager and his staff
afterwards?
— OM: “When I went home
afterwards, I was watching
the boxing, but my chances
were going through my head
constantly and I was just thinking
if I’d done this or put the ball
there, the reaction if I’d scored,
what I would have done, how
the fans would have reacted
- everything really. I was very
frustrated with my performance,
I’m never totally happy if I don’t
score, we won 3-0 and I should
have scored, but we got the three
points and I impacted the game
in our favour in their opinion
which made me feel good about
myself. Jack knows as well as
anyone what it feels like if you
aren’t on the scoresheet when
you’ve had enough chances to
win a game by yourself. But I’ve
reflected and analysed and know
I did pretty much everything
else but score to the best of my
ability.”
— UTB: Last season was
hampered by illness and
injuries; would it be fair to say
the problems you encountered
were more serious than were
commonly known at the time?
— OM: “I felt drained, totally
drained to be honest having
suffered with tonsillitis around
the same time as I got Covid.
Just breathing was difficult for a
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

14 UTB
time, it wasn’t good and pretty
worrying too. My immune system
just wasn’t working as it should,
it gave up on me for a few weeks
and it left me struggling and it
took time to recover. I lost around
six or seven kilos which is quite
a lot, it was an annoying and
frustrating time, but gradually
I have built myself back up,
got stronger and I’m now the
heaviest I’ve ever been in my
career, so I’m feeling good. I’m fit
and determined to contribute to
the team. I’ve put the weight on
and reduced my body fat, so it is
lean muscle mass now which is
what we wanted to happen.”
“I’M A TERRIBLE WATCHER.
I FEEL POWERLESS SEEING
THE BOYS GOING OUT
THERE BATTLING FOR
EVERY POINT AND THERE
IS LITERALLY NOTHING
YOU CAN DO TO HELP”
— UTB: Without wanting to
dwell too much on the past,
how mentally challenging was
last season for you personally,
particularly seeing your
campaign prematurely ended
against tonight’s opponents just
as you were starting to get over
the aforementioned problems?
— OM: “I hate not being
available, I’m a terrible watcher.
I feel powerless seeing the boys
going out there battling for every
point and there is literally nothing
you can do to help; you just feel
you are letting everyone around
you down. You can cheer them
on from the stands, wish them
good luck in the dressing room,
but not being able to play and
contribute where it really matters
was very tough for me to accept,
especially with what was at stake.
The boys were great with me,
but I couldn’t have them worrying
about me when they are entering
make or break games, it was
about them being focused, not
my wellbeing. Unfortunately, we
had quite a few on the sidelines
towards the end of the season
and I still think of what might
have been if we’d overcome
Forest.”
— UTB: You recently faced
the media ahead of a game
where you spoke openly about
yourself as a person, showing
greater maturity and the type
of character you are inside and
outside the football club. Those
words to us demonstrated your
honesty and how genuine you
are.
— OM: “My career to this point
has been on a steady upward
trend. Before the last
couple of seasons, I’d
never really had a major
setback or injury or gone
anywhere and it not work
out so it has tested me
at times and you find out a
lot more about yourself.
But I feel in the
best place both
physically and
most important
mentally for
a long time
and now it is
really time
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

UTB 15
to crack on. I was telling myself
I wasn’t injured or hurt against
Reading, I just wanted to carry
on and get through it, but by
playing on I made the injury
worse. I just couldn’t believe
my luck, it was tough to swallow
having worked hard to get over
Covid, but it has taught me to
accept injuries because they will
happen as a footballer. Away
from football, we recently had a
charity cricket match for Tommy
Spurr’s kid who is going through
a horrible time and undergoing
treatment at the minute. We used
to go to the same school and
have always been good mates.
It was just nice seeing people at
home, talking about things like a
normal 26-year-old. I just happen
to be a footballer, I don’t change
because of my job, I am the same
person I was 10 years ago. I’ve
had to remember at times that
as a footballer you are a role
model to youngsters and you
are in the public eye a lot more,
sometimes I haven’t thought
about it and got myself in trouble
but most people appreciate
I’m not a robotic footballer and
I’ve learnt the hard way. Maybe
sometimes, I have to play the
game a bit more, although it
would possibly be easier if I’d
change over the years. I’ve been
stupid at times, but I am who I am,
and I don’t think my friends or
family would want me to change
too much, they’ve always wanted
me to be grounded and true to
myself and although I’ve paid
the consequences at times, I’ve
always taken whatever has come
my way.”
16 UTB
— UTB: You have a love of
boxing and are a regular at
fights when the playing schedule
allows. What is it about that
sport which made you become
an avid fan, and do you feel it
can aid footballers?
— OM: “It is the discipline and
dedication that intrigues me.
I have friends who are boxers
and the way they conduct
themselves whilst in a pre-fight
training camp is ridiculous and a
real eye opener, they simply shut
themselves off from the world.
To have the mental strength to
be able to do all that to make
sure you give yourself the best
chance of winning on fight night
is unbelievable. You go into the
ring on your own, no teammates
to back you up and if you
aren’t at it, you could easily get
hurt, it has always fascinated
me. Jack Bateson is someone
I know well, we used to go to the
amateur boxing club together at
Burmantofts and he was always
the one down there. I’ve met
other boxers and become friends
through going to fights. Sonny
Edwards is the same age as me
and a bit of a character on social
media. I used to go mainly for
fitness in the summer months, but
I’ve kept in touch with a number
of the coaches.”
— UTB: The goalkeeper’s union
is often spoken about by the
ones between the sticks. How
does it work with strikers, are
you as close-knit?
— OM: “We are exactly the same
as the goalkeepers, but they are
obviously much weirder, they
really are strange cats. To be fair
to Wes (Foderingham) he is one
of the more normal ones, but I’ve
come across some ‘characters’
in my time. A striker will always
back another striker and the
relationship here between us all
is fantastic. It has been frosty at
other clubs though, especially
when you are the young kid and
others are perhaps looking over
their shoulders at you. My two
closest friends last season were
Bill and Didzy even though we
were all kind of fighting for the
same position when fit. For me
as a striker it is about taking your
opportunities in the team and in
front of goal, not relying on the
misfortunate of others.”
— UTB: Has the last year to 18
months been the toughest spell
of your professional career and
do you feel you have handled it
better than you would have in
your younger days?
— OM: “I’ve been around the
game for long enough now, but
I wouldn’t have dealt with it when
I was less experienced. It is often
swings and roundabouts as a
striker, sometimes everything
you touch goes in the net and
there are other times when you
just can’t score for love or toffee.
But you just can’t stress about it,
it doesn’t help you in your game
and it is the most cliched answer
ever but if you keep getting in the
right positions one will go in, I still
can’t believe one didn’t against
Blackburn though! You can’t go
from scoring 20+ a season to not
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

UTB 17
playing and missing five chances
a game than not getting the
chances or not even playing.”
scoring at all, I’ll keep plugging
away when selected in the hope
the floodgates will then open.
This has been the toughest spell
I can remember but not purely
because I haven’t been scoring
goals, every striker has a bad
spell unless you are Billy Sharp!
It is the injuries that have got me
down, not having the opportunity
to go out there and play, I’ve not
played enough in the last two
seasons, after an enjoyable first
season in the Premier League
and that has been frustrating.
This sounds daft, but I’d rather be
— UTB: Let’s focus on the
present now, do you hope your
relationship with the coaching
staff here, particularly boss Paul
Heckingbottom coupled with
your hunger, will enable you to
rediscover your best form in the
coming weeks?
— OM: “I’ll never forget Hecky
signing me at Barnsley then
leaving the club three days later
for Leeds, so I’ve always thanked
him for that because I went to
Oakwell because of him really,
having seen a presentation
linking my strengths to how
the team played and how’d we
suit each other. He has known
me since I was in the U23s at
Swansea and knows what I’m
about, he knows how to get the
best from me and it is nothing
against anyone else, but he is
possibly the best fit I’ve had
here. Hecky is always on my
case though, even before he was
manager, he has been in my ear
and he isn’t afraid to hammer me.
But he knows the best ways to
get me going, he knows how to
lift me when I’m having a down
day, he doesn’t let it happen
on his watch and we have such
a good relationship. If he isn’t
on me, I’m worried because
I know how much he cares, and
I owe him a lot. He has shown
confidence in me for years and
I want to reward him because
I think he wants me to succeed
more than I do sometimes!”
UNDER-21s UPDATE
Some notable United first team
players managed some muchneeded
game time in the recent
clash with Cardiff City at the LNER
Community Stadium.
After recently coming back from injury,
the likes of Chris Basham and Tommy
Doyle played 65 minutes as they both
looked to improve their fitness ahead of
the first team game against Luton.
The likes of Daniel Jebbison, Kyron
Gordon and Will Osula were also selected
as both sides fielded a strong team.
Cardiff took the lead on 17 minutes when
a loose ball from a corner was smashed
in by Northern Ireland international Gavin
Whyte. With 20 minutes remaining, Oliver
Arblaster’s trip just inside the area resulted
in a soft penalty and Whyte made it 2-0
from the spot.
Whyte completed his hat-trick late on,
whilst Osula came close to a consolation
for the Blades.
TEAM (vs Cardiff City): Amissah, Sachdev, Angell,
UNDER-18s UPDATE
Prior to the start of the new
season, 11 players signed
scholarships with the club.
Several of them have already featured
at U18s level last season, with Kurtis
Havenhand, Billy Blacker, Jack Waldron,
Brandon Ly and Sam Aston all making the
permanent step up.
Goalkeeper Callum Yam, defenders
Jayden Prunty and Mekhi Haughton-Parris,
midfielder Stafford Clarke and forwards
Ethan Cummings and Tavio Ciccarelli have
also signed scholarships with the Blades.
United’s academy manager Derek Geary
said: “We’re going to be a really young
group this year. A lot of lads who played
in this team last year will bump up to the
U21s, but it will still be the same mantra of
out run, out fight, out play. Some of these
lads have been around the under 18s last
season. They’re used to the environment,
the coaches, the intensity and the
standard they’ll be up against.”
Meanwhile, the U18s suffered a first
defeat since March 2021 after losing 3-0 to
Charlton Athletic.
TEAM (vs Charlton Athletic): Faxon, Waldron,
Haughton-Parris, Hampson, Pitan, Drake, Staniland,
United dominated large parts of
the season opener against
Blackburn Rovers, but slipped to
a narrow 1-0 defeat at Ewood Park.
The Blades started well and had two
opportunities inside the first 20 minutes,
with Courtney Sweetman-Kirk twice going
close for Neil Redfearn’s side.
Debutant Chene Muir smashed the
crossbar with an effort from distance as
United continued to look strong.
Inside first half stoppage time, Blackburn
took the lead when Saffron Jordan’s
header beat close season signing Bethan
Davies. There were more opportunities for
United after the break when Alethea Paul’s
effort was blocked, and Sweetman-Kirk
fired wide.
Bex Rayner also went close during the
closing stages and then four minutes from
time Sweetman-Kirk struck the crossbar in
what turned into a frustrating afternoon for
the Blades.
STRONG HOME START PLEASES SUTV PUNDITS
Former Blades Carl
Asaba and Kevin
Gage were united
in their positive view of
United’s start to the
season here at Bramall
Lane following the recent
victory over Blackburn.
Paul Heckingbottom’s
side have taken nine points
on home soil already this
term, and produced a near
faultless display in their 3-0
success against Jon Dahl
Tomasson’s side last time
out in S2.
After the game, both
pundits hailed the display,
but ex-full-back Gage
stated he hasn’t been
surprised by United’s
positive start.
He said: “We have
started where we have left
off last season. It hasn’t
come as a surprise to me
how we are playing. We
were a good team at the
end of last season, we
have improved our squad
this season, and it has
been a good start. It has
been impressive.”
Asaba, who starred for
United between 2001 and
2003, was impressed with
the Blades’ concentration
levels in what turned out to
be a one-sided contest.
He remarked: “When
you are controlling things,
and are so dominant,
sometimes these are the
games when you can
switch off. But the boys
didn’t, the defenders were
covering – even though the
match was played mostly
in the other half, they still
had the discipline to do
their jobs. Every time a
sub is coming on, the team
is not dropping. The next
sub is adding something,
and then the next one
is adding. Players are
chomping at the bit to get
involved.”
Both also expressed
their admiration of Iliman
Ndiaye’s contribution,
especially his individual
second goal.
Asaba continued: “What
a lovely lad. He’s so calm
and humble, he’s talking
about his team-mates and
not being in competition,
he’s just about doing his
best when he gets his
chance. That’s nice to
hear.”
Gage added: “The
second goal was
technically better than
his one against Fulham
because he actually won
the ball and created it
himself. Scoring in front of
the Kop, it doesn’t get any
better than that!”
FOOTBALL –
AN INSIDER’S JOB
The attempted Super League breakaway
in 2021 shook English football to its core,
and it also stoked a conversation which
led to a new book by former Blades
secretary Dick Chester.
The proposed breakaway stunned
everyone in the game, but this was
nothing new to Dick who recounted some
similar tales from a long career where he
held the modern-day CEO post, not just
with the Blades, but also with Lincoln City
and Sheffield Wednesday.
After chatting with local journalist Alan
Biggs, Dick explains an idea of writing
a book was mooted, a process he has
thoroughly enjoyed.
Dick explained: “When the Super
League story broke, I remember chatting
with Alan and telling him this was nothing
new. I had in fact attended meetings
myself which would have resulted in a
Super League being formed several years
before, breaking up the then Division One.
Alan suggested this was an interesting
story, and one of many from my time in the
game which would make for a good read.
“I never thought I’d be in a position to
write a book if I am honest. I’ve never
been one to court publicity, so it was
difficult to start with but by the time
I finished it, I must say I really enjoyed the
process.”
The book charts Dick’s time at United,
where he talks about his experiences
of working behind the scenes during a
rollercoaster period on the field, as well as
United’s precarious financial situation and
the redevelopment of Bramall Lane.
Dick adds: “We dropped down to the
Fourth Division, but the appointment of
Ian Porterfield and significant investment
made by Reg Brealey changed things.
“The investment had a big bearing on a
lot of the redevelopments of Bramall Lane
at that time.
“Reg may not have always been the
most popular in some quarters, but I can
go as far to say that had he not come
forward and put the majority of the million
pounds into the share offer, I could see a
situation where the club would not have
survived. It was that serious.”
FABLES & FOLKLORE
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
Gone But Not Forgotten...
I have said many times a football
club, and Sheffield United in
particular, are a huge extended
family. We have the same things happen
to us as every family does over the
course of time, but on a far bigger scale.
Births, weddings (and divorces),
birthdays, anniversaries and, of course,
sadly, deaths.
The amount of requests we receive
for tributes to those who have passed is
huge and though we always try to help
where we can, the memorial game at the
end of the season seems a fitting and
fair way to pay our tribute and get the
rest of the family to join in as one. We get
asked so much to wear black arm bands
and have silences or applause and the
honest fact is that we just can’t do it for
everyone. It’s hard trying to find a balance,
although the policy and charter which we
reserve for the memory of former players,
management, board members and owners
▲ Colin Grainger seen here pictured in 2013 with the
programme from his two goals for England against Brazil
as well as long serving staff members now
seems to serve us well and people tend
to get it.
Over the summer, we lost one of our
former lads in the shape of Colin Grainger.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

36 UTB
What a man and what a life. Born in
Havercroft near Wakefield in 1933, he
joined us by way of Wrexham, his starting
there prompted by the fact that his cousin
Dennis played for them. He only made five
appearances before Reg Freeman brought
him back to Sheffield - again there was
a family connection as he had managed
Colin’s brother Jack at Rotherham. As a
left winger he prospered at Bramall Lane,
making 98 appearances over nearly
four years before being transferred to
Sunderland for £16,000.
▲ Andy Goram was a popular figure behind the
scenes during his short stay at Bramall Lane
Not many players score two goals
against Brazil on their international debut,
but he did, and it happened at Wembley.
He went on to win seven England caps
and also appeared for the Football League
XI. His club career saw him move to Leeds
from Sunderland, and he appeared in the
first ever game Don Revie took charge
of before injury saw the rising figure of
Albert Johansson seize the chance and
take his place. Speaking of Albert, Mick
Jones once told me that not long after he
signed for Leeds, he was answering the
call of nature in the dressing room toilets
prior to going out when Albert appeared
at the side of him, took off his shirt and
then proceeded to urinate in his hands
and rub it all over his body. A mortified
Mick’s jaw fell to the ground as the South
African-born player rubbed himself all
over. Clearly seeing Mick’s amazement,
he explained, “It’s good for the muscles…”
Mick never stood next to him in the
tunnel again!
Colin’s later career took in Port Vale
and Donny before dropping into nonleague
for a spell, but he also famously
and simultaneously had a career as a
professional singer on the circuit, and a
very good one at that. Starting out with
an American group called the Hilltoppers,
he had a record deal with HMV, releasing
“This in Know” to a fair amount of success.
He is also the only former Blade who I am
aware of sharing a stage with The Beatles
in 1963 in Stockport, billed as the ‘Singing
Winger’ he played his last professional gig
in Leeds in 1970, quitting to concentrate
on his sales career. His United connection
was reaffirmed in the Neil Warnock era
when he became a much-respected
member of his scouting network for many
years. He was a part of the club contingent
who welcomed Pele to Bramall Lane
in 2007 and attended a fair few Senior
Blades dinners where he graced the
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

UTB 37
floor with his singing repertoire - he even
launched a CD of his hits at the Lane.
Col was a lovely lad, full of stories of a
life definitely worth living and one which
he was rightly proud of. He and his wife
Doreen were a lovely couple, and I had
the privilege to share a few brews over at
their bungalow down the years, and I am
sure that her loss a couple of years ago hit
him very hard indeed. Thankfully, all these
amazing tales were put down in a book, so
his story is there to be read by all for years
to come. He moved into a care home,
and they were amazed to find out what a
legend had joined their number and Harry
Kane gave him a call for a chat around the
time the book was released and that gave
him a huge boost. For sure, the world will
be a colder place without the ‘Singing
Winger’ there to add his warmth to it. Bless
you Col.
Andy Goram sadly passed after a short
illness and, although he only had a short
spell here on loan as cover in the Steve
Bruce era, he left a big impression on
many of the lads
who were here.
Wayne Quinn told
a few tales of him
keeping an eye on
the youngsters and
offering advice,
and that’s nice to
hear. One way or
another, he was a
good ‘keeper for Oldham and Rangers to
name two, and the scenes outside Ibrox
as his cortège passed by showed what the
Gers fans thought of him.
Another player who was well thought of
in his time here was, of course, Mel Rees,
and it’s hard to imagine that it’s pushing
30 years since he lost his battle with
illness. Few will never forget the gesture
of him leading the Blades out at Wembley
for our first appearance at the national
stadium since 1925. With the exception of
maybe Paul McGrath or perhaps Gordon
Cowans, I doubt there are many players
who made as few appearances for the first
team who could be held in such esteem
by the Blades. He joined from West Brom
in March 1992 as another Bassett bargain
for a reported £25,000 to ease a ‘keeper
crisis and he made his debut against
Liverpool, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0
victory for the Blades. After biding his
time for a real break at a number of clubs,
he found his feet here and the displays
summed up to all what it took to be a
Blade - guts, bravery and more than a little
skill and craft. His final appearance for
the first team was just a month later when
Leeds United confirmed themselves as
last champions of the old Division One.
Mel was injured in the game but carried
on, the final nail being a Brian Gayle lob
that sadly looped over his head. The injury
was a blow as he had been called up for
Wales at the time for the squad to play
Austria but had to withdraw.
“THERE’S ALWAYS SUN AROUND THE
CORNER, AND WE RAISE A GLASS TO
THOSE OF OURS WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE
AND FOR WHAT THEY DID FOR US IN THEIR
OWN WAY AND IN THEIR OWN TIMES”
His battle after his cancer diagnosis
matched his mettle on the pitch, and at
one point he looked like he had cracked it,
managing to go out on loan to Chesterfield
and he also made the bench for a game at
Villa Park in January 1993. Sadly, Mel lost
the biggest battle of all. His dad, Ronnie,
and brother Steve were huge supporters
of Mel and built the same relationship with
Sheffield United as he had done. Blades
being Blades, many of the red and white
▲ Mel Rees is still fondly remembered here 30 years since his passing
army passing his last resting place would
leave a tribute. Mrs. G and the band of
Bladettes being part of that number - they
also left a contact and were touched when
Ronnie got in touch with them. It forged
a friendship which lasted the test of time
and was sadly only broken this year when,
in his 90s, Ronnie sadly passed away. A
little bit of Blade in the principality sadly
left the Supporters’ Club and closed the
book on a relationship which was forged
both in steel and football.
Sorry it’s not a humorous tale this
week, but, like I said earlier, we are a
family, and we experience the same
family traumas, and we have to let the
rest of you know what’s been going on in
the Blades world.
There’s always sun around the corner,
and we raise a glass to those of ours
who have gone before and for what they
did for us in their own way and in their
own times.
Cheers lads!
WHAT’S THE STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW features a
Blades related photograph from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
Following a very disappointing
end to the 1964-65 season
which saw the Blades finish in
19th place in the old League One, fans
were hoping for much better from their
team for the 1965-66 campaign.
The team had lost seven of its last eight
league games in March and April 1965
to set alarm bells ringing amongst fans.
Was United’s over reliance on its own
young players going to bring the club a
bright future?
For the 1965-66 season, United had
made one new signing, winger Gil Reece
from Newport County, but the rest of the
squad was made up from experienced
players who had either been with the
club a few seasons or youngsters who
had risen through United’s productive
youth system of the early 1960s.
The Blades could not have wished for
a better start to the new season, winning
seven and losing only two of their first 14
league games to sit second in the table.
The next game saw Tommy Docherty’s
Chelsea side visit Bramall Lane on 30th
October 1965.
Today’s photograph captures an
incident from that game which took place
at the Bramall Lane end of the ground
in the first half. Chelsea were on the
attack and their promising young centre
forward Peter Osgood was bearing
down on goal when he was tackled
from behind by United defender Reg
Matthewson. Osgood in the dark shirt is
seen taking a fall in a theatrical manner
and Matthewson lies on the ground
behind him.
Other United players seen clearly
in this photograph are experienced
goalkeeper Alan Hodgkinson, already
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

UTB 41
on the floor anticipating a shot from
Osgood. Another United defender, Ken
Mallender, has moved across between
Hodgkinson and Osgood to try and
block the forward’s anticipated shot
whilst veteran defender Joe Shaw
(behind Osgood), looks very concerned
about what he is witnessing. Further
behind all of them is Blades’ young
midfielder David Munks.
To the relief of United fans, the referee,
Mr Norman from Blackburn, did not give
a penalty. This seems like one of those
incidents where VAR would have been
used in the modern game.
The game itself finished with
Chelsea winning 2-1 in front of a very
disappointing crowd of 20,795. United
had taken the lead in the 49th minute,
ironically from the penalty spot courtesy
of Scottish winger John Docherty.
Chelsea, however, stunned the Blades
with goals from George Graham and
Osgood to claim all the points. Osgood
had certainly gained his revenge
following the non-award of a first half
penalty.
United ended the season in a
creditable, if slightly disappointing, ninth
place whilst Chelsea finished fourth. The
season was a notable one for Joe Shaw
as it was his last season as a player.
The Chelsea team included two players
who became very successful and
famous managers namely Graham (with
Arsenal especially) and Terry Venables
(Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and
England).
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
from the past between the Blades and our opponents…
READING 0-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
TUESDAY 4th NOVEMBER 1997
United ran out winners in their
final encounter at Reading’s
former Elm Park ground, beating
the Royals by a single goal from
midfielder Mark Patterson. Little did he
know at the time that he was celebrating
the Blades’ 6,000th league goal!
Despite Reading’s subsequent
relegation from Division One that season,
they began this fixture nine games
unbeaten, whilst the Blades were second
in the league. Injuries beforehand had
led to two changes in personnel but
United still managed to sweep aside the
Royals, who struggled to cope with Roger
Nilsen’s crosses and long throws.
It was goalless at the break. Reading
had a good chance through Darren
Caskey, but Simon Tracey parried
before Carl Tiler cleared to safety. On
35 minutes, unselfish play from Don
Hutchison presented Patterson with a
great chance but he fired over. Moments
later Nilsen was unfortunate not to open
his account, but Nicky Hammond got
down low and somehow scooped the ball
over the bar.
On 52 minutes, the Blades took the
lead when Gareth Taylor chased down
a lost cause, and cut the ball back into
the path of Patterson who supplied the
finishing touch.
United squandered opportunities to
extend their lead after Tiler saw his header
saved and Dane Whitehouse was tackled
in the nick of time by Linvoy Primus. At the
other end, Steve Swales tested Tracey
from 20-yards, whilst Michael Meaker’s
effort cannoned off the crossbar.
United travelled to Elland
Philliskirk strike would prove enough for
Billy McEwan’s side to take maximum
points in this Yorkshire derby as United
stunned the home side. The Blades
ended the 1986-87 season in ninth, whilst
After relegation to League
2011 One, United found themselves
competing in the Football League Trophy.
In the first round they fell behind to
League Two Burton Albion at the Pirelli
and Erik Tonne secured a 2-1 win. After
beating Rotherham in round two, the
Blades then fell to Bradford on penalties
United took on River Plate in
United’s goalscorer was Alan Woodward
who netted a penalty.
WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Dean Saunders...
Dean Saunders
came from a
footballing family.
His father, Roy, was a
player and coach at
Swansea and this is where
Dean started his career.
Later Dean’s son, Callum,
played for Crewe
Alexandra.
Dean enjoyed an
illustrious playing career
as a busy forward with
Brighton, Oxford United,
Derby County, Liverpool,
Aston Villa, Galatasaray,
Nottingham Forest,
Benfica, Bradford City
as well having a spell at
Bramall Lane.
He played for the Blades
between December 1997
and December 1998. Many
▲ Dean enjoyed a strong spell as manager of Doncaster
fans from that era recall the
cheeky goal Dean scored
for the Blades against Port
Vale at Bramall Lane on
28th March 1998. Dean
was beaten to a through
ball by the Vale goalkeeper
who knocked the ball out
for a throw-in. Before the
‘keeper had returned to
his goal, Dean took a quick
throw-in against his back
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING

UTB 51
and curled the ball into the
empty goal.
As well enjoying a
successful club career,
which included winning the
FA Cup with Liverpool, and
the League Cup with Aston
Villa, Dean also enjoyed a
fine career with the Welsh
national team winning 75
caps and scoring 22 goals.
After retiring from
playing, Dean initially
moved into coaching
with Blackburn (2001 to
2003) and Newcastle
(2004 to 2006). On both
occasions he worked
under the management of
Graeme Souness. He was
also appointed assistant
manager of Wales in
September 2007 when
John Toshack was the
manager.
Dean’s first job in
management was with
Conference club Wrexham
and he showed early
promise. He had been
appointed in October
2008 and took them to
the promotion play-offs in
2010-11.
His first managerial
role in the EFL came in
September 2011 when
he was appointed at
Championship club
Doncaster Rovers.
Unfortunately, Rovers were
relegated at the end of the
2011-12 season but in the
following term he steered
them to the top of League
▲ He endured a tough time in the dugout at Wolves
One by January and had
them looking well placed
for an early return to the
Championship.
However, the opportunity
to manage a larger club
arose in January 2013
when Championship club
Wolverhampton Wanderers
approached Rovers. Dean
joined Wolves, who had
been relegated form
the Premier League the
previous season, believing
he could still have his new
team challenging for the
promotion play-offs. It all
went wrong though as he
did not see his new team
win until the 10th match
under his management.
Wolves continued to
struggle and were
themselves relegated to
the third tier at the end of
the 2012-13 season, and
Dean was relieved of his
duties.
Subsequently Dean
has held two further
management roles with
EFL clubs, being named as
interim manager at Crawley
Town in December 2014
before being appointed
as boss of Chesterfield in
May 2015. Again, results
were not favourable and by
November 2015 he had left
the Spireites.
Dean’s managerial
career made a promising
start at Wrexham but his
subsequent experiences in
the EFL have shown what
a tough and unforgiving
business club management
can be.
In a strange quirk of the fixtures, United face the
Reds having already played at Anfield in August.
Since the last home game, United had suffered
back-to-back 2-0 defeats on the road against
Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough, ensuring
after seven games the Blades were sat second bottom
of the Premier League with four points.
United produced a shock though with Adrian
Littlejohn’s fourth minute goal enough to earn the win.
FACE TO FACE…
JAMIE HOYLAND
UTB poses the same questions from 1992-93 to
the same players to see if they remember what
they said 30 years ago, and to see what their
2022-23 answers are…
— Which is the best
match I played in?
— This is before the
Man U FA Cup game.
Maybe I went with
my Blades debut v
Liverpool? Okay, the
win over Wednesday in
1991, thinking about it
I’d agree with that now.
— What is your
favourite food
and drink?
— I reckon I would have
said Italian. In terms of
favourite drink, I hope
I didn’t say lime and
soda or something like
that? I never said that
did I? I must have been
lying or drunk when
I said it!
— What are your
hobbies outside
football?
— I didn’t say golf, did I?
Yeah, well that’s gone
now! Did I say squash?
I said gardening, did
I? Well, that’s true
and I still do that now
along with a lot of dog
walking.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs READING
— If you weren’t
a footballer, what
would you be?
— I would have said
PE teacher. Yeah, that
was my fall back. For
an easy life did I say?
Well, that’s because
of the holidays, do
you know I actually
remember saying that
and getting some
stick for it!
— Which current
player do you
most admire?
— Did I say Paul
Gascoigne? No?
Robson, well I can’t
argue with that. These
days, I watched Kevin
De Bruyne last season
when I was at a game
scouting, and I actually
applauded him off he
was that good.
— What is the most
annoying thing about
being a footballer?
— I’ve no idea what
I would have said
here. Well, that’s
interesting I said that
Revisited
because today
I’d say something
similar especially with
regards to VAR!
— What are your most
endearing qualities?
— Err...I really don’t
know what I’d have said
again? Did I say that?
Well, that’s probably
why I am on wife
number two then!
— What are your
worst habits?
— I bet I said biting my
nails? Yep, that’s still an
issue now!

RAINBOW BLADES
Just as most football clichés
are easily debunked, so are
a lot of the assumptions
about being bisexual.
Football loves a cliché.
‘Game of two halves’, ‘good
touch for a big man’ to name a couple. We
know football is a bit more complicated
and nuanced than the catchphrases
which accompany it. The same can be
said of bisexuality. I’m pretty confident
being open and out about being bi and
embracing the potential to see the beauty
in everyone is such a great part of my life.
There’s plenty of clichés and stereotypes
that make it harder to get to this point
however: ‘pick a side’, ‘can’t be trusted’ or
the classic: ‘it’s just a phase’.
Just as most football clichés are easily
debunked, so are a lot of the assumptions
about being bisexual. In a settled
relationship? Great! Doesn’t mean we
stop being bi. Not attracted to all genders
equally all of the time? Cool! Doesn’t mean
we stop being bi. Obviously, I don’t speak
for everyone who identifies as bisexual,
but clichés are tiresome, both in football
and other areas of life. At the end of the
day, it’s a long season ahead, so let’s give
the stereotypes a rest for a bit and remain
united for all.
YOUNG PEOPLE
GIVE BACK
WITH NCS
The Foundation’s summer NCS
programme has been one to remember as
young people from across Sheffield raised
over £10,000 for local charities.
This summer our young people raised
money for local charities Cavendish Cancer
Care, Golddigger Trust, Sheffield Children’s
Hospital, Mind and Roundabout.
Charlotte Hedges, NCS manager said:
“It’s been remarkable how the young
people have managed to plan and execute
their fundraising events in just three days.
To raise over £10,000 for local charities is
fantastic.”
Golddigger Trust had two teams of young
people come down and help them in a
variety of ways, including a full renovation
of a garden on the premises.
Gareth Beer of Golddigger Trust added:
“It’s been great to see the young people
come down and make some changes.
They’ve created a usable space for our
young people and their hard work has
really impressed us all.”
GIRLS
FOOTBALL
SESSIONS
After the Lionesses
fantastic Euros, we’ve
seen a massive increase in
girls playing football in the
local area.
For any girls looking to
play regularly, we have
two sessions every Friday
evening at Leisure United
Westfield (S20 8FA).
Our Wildcats session (4-
5pm, ages 5-11) is a chance
for girls to develop their
love of football through fun,
engaging and specially
created sessions in a safe
environment.
Our Premier League
Kicks session (5pm-
6pm, ages 11-16) is the
perfect opportunity for
girls who just want to
have a kickabout. Girls
are encouraged to bring
their friends (and make
some new ones) all while
playing football in a fun
atmosphere.
Reading manager Paul Ince has set
realistic targets heading into this
Championship season and the early
signs suggest that his team are taking strides
forward.
Home form will be crucial to Reading’s hopes
of piecing together a successful campaign and
they have started with three wins in front of their
home fans, with the most recent coming as they
beat Middlesbrough.
Now former Manchester United and England
midfielder Ince will be looking to find a formula
that provides his side with consistency away
from home, with their win against Sheffield
United at Bramall Lane in April evidence that
they can be a threat on their travels.
In a competitive Championship division, Ince is
keen to dampen down expectations as his side
flirt with the promotion positions in the opening
month of the campaign, but this serial winner
will be keen to build momentum behind his team
after signing a contract to continue as Reading
boss after a spell as caretaker in the final weeks
of last season.
STAR MAN
It was very much a case of
making a return home as
Shane Long rejoined Reading
in July after 11 years.
Long started his story as a teenager
at Reading and went on to play for
West Bromwich Albion, Hull and
Southampton in the top flight, with
Royals boss Paul Ince convinced the
striker still has plenty to offer at the
age of 35.
“The arrival of Shane is something
of a football fairytale for Reading fans,
but make no mistake about it, he is
coming into the dressing room purely
on the merits of what he can offer this
squad out on the pitch,” said Ince.
“Experience, energy, leadership,
desire and a natural instinct you
need to score goals. Shane will be an
important addition to the group
we are patiently trying to build
and grow.
“You can see he has played
in the Premier League – he
backs into people, he bumps
defenders and his
retention of the ball
was superb. He is a
different striker to
what we have got,
and it is great to have
him here.”
Long started his
second spell at
“In the 11 years since I left Reading,
READING LEGEND...
Appearance records are unlikely to be
broken in a modern game which often
sees players moving clubs on a regular
Hicks played in a record 603 games
of many highlights.
“A small boy from just outside
were up and down like a yo-yo in the
Paul Ince
FROM THE TOUCHLINE
Reading manager Paul Ince is to be a siege mentality this season
satisfied with his side’s start and the fans are going to be so
to this Championship season, important to us.
but he appreciates that tougher tests “This league is so demanding. You
will lie ahead.
have to put in a shift in every game
The Royals have given themselves and in the Middlesbrough game, we
a platform to build on with three were out on our feet and managed to
impressive home wins against Cardiff, get over the line.
Blackburn and Middlesbrough, with “I can deal with losing games, but
former MK Dons and Blackburn I want my players to put everything
manager Ince in upbeat mood ahead into it and as long as they do that,
of this game at Bramall Lane.
they’ll get no complaints from me.”
“If we’re going to stay in this league, Ince’s home in the Wirral region of
we’ve got to pick up wins at home the North West of England meant he
and try and nick a few more away,” he was embarking on a lot of travel as he
stated.
took on the Reading job last season
“We’ve got three wins on the and he has shown his commitment to
bounce here and I think we’ve the job by moving closer to Berkshire
deserved them – I thought we were after signing a deal to stay on as
outstanding against Cardiff, we Reading boss after he kept the club in
outplayed Blackburn and against the Championship in the second half
a Middlesbrough team who have of last season
a very strong squad, I thought we “I don’t understand any manager
deserved to win.
that commutes, as a manager you
“This is a massive job. It’s a good have to put everything into it,”
job because it’s a challenge. I always he added.
like a challenge. The structure needs “You’ve got to be in, as we don’t
to change and that’s something get time off. If you’re trying to squirrel
we’re looking to change in some up to see your family, it’s not the
departments.
right mentality. Whatever happens
“The Championship is up and down, in life, and as a manager, if you’re
up and down. It’s yo-yo football, but going to lose your job as long as you
in every game, you have to work know you’ve given it your all, haven’t
and work hard, and our fans know cheated yourself and not cut corners,
where we are. They know it’s going you can live with that.”
THE LOWDOWN...
Each week UTB takes an alternative look over our opponents...
HANDS UP FOR A BISCUIT
The Championship
club are now known as
the Royals due to their
location in the Royal
County of Berkshire
but that was not always
the case. Due to their
close proximity to
the headquarters of
confectionary company
Huntley & Palmers, their
original nickname was the
Biscuitmen.
HOME FROM HOME
The Royals have had a
number of homes in their
149-year history, but they
spent much of their early
years playing at cricket
grounds. They called the
Reading Cricket Ground
home between 1878 and
1882, and the Caversham
Cricket Ground home
between 1889 and
1896. Elm Park was then
Reading’s home for more
than 100 years prior to
moving to the Madejski
Stadium in 1998.
WHO WANTS TO BE A
MILLIONAIRE?
Chris Tarrant is arguably
one of the most famous
of Reading’s celebrity
fans, with the popular
television presenter still
a regular watcher of the
club. Actress Kate Winslet
and comedian Ricky
Gervais are two further
high-profile fans, along
YOU SHALL NOT PASS
with Irwin Sparkes who
is the lead singer of The
Hoosiers.
CHRISTMAS CHEER
UTB 79
The club were formed on
Christmas Day in 1871. A
crest was emblazoned
on the Reading shirt for
the first time in 1953. It
was a simplistic design,
featuring just the letter “R”.
The current crest was first
introduced on the club kit
for the 1998-99 season.
The Royals hold the record in the EFL for the most
consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.
Goalkeeper Steve Death and his teammates achieved
the feat across two seasons in 1979, not allowing a
goal to be scored against them for 1,103 minutes.
THE EX-FILES
John Lundstrum
EACH WEEK UTB CATCHES UP WITH THE PROGRESS OF SOME OF THE NAMES WHO ONCE
GRACED BRAMALL LANE, BUT ARE NOW CONTINUING THEIR CAREER ELSEWHERE…
It has certainly been a time of
mixed emotions for former Blade
John Lundstram.
The Liverpudlian is now into
his second season with Rangers
after departing Bramall Lane in
2021 and has been a regular for
the Ibrox club during the current
campaign.
He certainly felt the ups and
downs of life as a professional
footballer recently when he was
red carded with the Gers 2-1 up
against Hibernian – a match which
ended 2-2.
Lundstram’s dismissal was
followed by another red for Alfredo
Morelos, and to rub further salt
into the wounds, Hibs’ equaliser
arrived in stoppage time.
Lundstram’s sending off proved
controversial, and was later
downgraded to a yellow, but it
didn’t help Rangers’ cause at the
time after being pegged back.
But four days later Lundstram
started as Rangers defeated PSV
Eindhoven in a Champions League
qualifier, ensuring the midfielder
is set to play in the competition’s
coveted group stages.
Rangers boss Giovanni Van
Bronckhorst has been impressed
with Lundstram’s recent display,
whilst he also acknowledged the
former Oxford ace was harshly
treated when recently given his
marching orders.
The Dutchman said: “John has
been really important. He kept the
pressure on them and made sure
the balance was good in the team.
We know the fire he has in these
moments, and he gave that to the
team as well.”
On the recent red card, he
commented: “The ref decides if
it’s a red card or yellow. I think
John was harsh to get a red card.
It was a foul, but he didn’t have
any intention to hit him really hard,
so I was surprised he gave him a
red card.”
WE TALK TO A CURRENT MEMBER OF
UNITED’S FIRST TEAM SQUAD TO FIND OUT
SOME OF THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS...
FAVOURITE...
BAND/ARTIST... It’s a French one. His name is Maître Gims. I’ve been
listening to him since I was young.
BOX SET/TV SERIES... I really enjoyed watching Stranger Things.
COMPUTER GAME... I play Candy Crush Saga every day on my phone.
Other than that, I’d say FIFA.
PHONE APP... I will say Instagram.
COMEDIAN... It’s another French one. Loris Giuliano.
HOLIDAY DESTINATION... I’ve never really been anywhere
which stands out. I just really like going back to
Senegal.
OTHER SPORT TO PLAY... I like all sports but if
pushed I’d go for tennis or basketball.
OTHER SPORT TO WATCH... Pretty much the
SPORTSMAN... Lionel Messi.
CURRENT TEAMMATE... They are all good, but I’ll say
my mate from the U21s, Nickseon Gomis.
GROUND TO PLAY AT... I can’t pick Bramall Lane?
Okay then, I’ll say the Senegalese national
stadium - Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor.
When I went there it was unreal.
MEAL... This is a Senegalese dish called mafe.
It’s basically rice, vegetables and meat.
EFL LAUNCHES
NEW EDI STRATEGY
The EFL recently launched its new
Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
strategy ‘Together’, which aims make
to make the League and its clubs more
reflective and representative of the
communities in which they serve.
Providing a framework for the EDI work
of the EFL and its 72 clubs for the next
five years, the headline objectives of the
strategy are:
— Ensure the workforce is
representative and reflective of the
communities its clubs represent
— Improve the diversity of supporters
attending EFL matches
— Continue to challenge
discrimination and behaviour both
in stands and across social media
— Establish a path for continual
EDI development for clubs
— Improve the understanding
of EDI across the game
Working collaboratively is a key theme of
the Together strategy and several of the
partners that will help delivery over the
next five years were present at a launch
event at Charlton Athletic, including,
Kick it Out, the Professional Footballers
Association, Women in Football, Level
TC AND THE NEXT
GENERATION…
Blades ambassador Tony Currie
continues to cross generations
after presenting a young supporter
with a raffle prize at the last home
game against Blackburn.
Young Harry was the grateful
winner as TC kindly donated
a number of signed prints for
supporters to win in the lounge.
The latest prize, a print of TC
playing for England, ensures his
legacy is passed down to the
youngsters attending Bramall Lane
in 2022.
Playing Field, Pride Sports and Fans For
Diversity.
Speaking, David McArdle, the EFL’s
head of equality, diversity and inclusion
said: “While football has made strides,
it continues to face challenges that are
reflected across society and with over
20 million attending EFL matches each
season and millions more watching around
the world, the League will use its platform
to challenge unwelcome behaviours and
promote inclusive practices, to help drive
change on the pitch, in club offices, in the
stands and within the communities which
clubs call home.”
BLADES STATISTICIAN ANDREW KIRKHAM DELVES INTO THE
ARCHIVES TO ENLIGHTEN UNITEDITES WITH TOPICAL FIGURES…
INTERNATIONALS
LOANEE INTERNATIONALS
Last season two of our on-loan players
made full international appearances whilst
at the Lane – Conor Hourihane (7 caps,
Republic of Ireland) and Robin Olsen (5
caps, Sweden). Can you name eight other
loanees who played full internationals
whilst with United? Six countries are
involved. The answers are below.
NO FIRST TEAM APPEARANCES
Can you name the four players, not
loanees, who have made full international
appearances whilst a Blade but who
have made no competitive first team
appearances for United and the one
whose only appearance was in the EFL
Cup? Again, the answers are below
PETER NDLOVU
Using various websites that now exist,
including 11v11, I have been trying to
confirm how many internationals Peter
Ndlovu played for Zimbabwe whilst with
United. Previously he was credited with
26 games and 21 goals including: H vs
Burkina Faso on 15th July 2001 (1 goal) and
A vs Mauritania on 14th November 2003.
I now think he did not play in these games
(I had reservations about the second
game and it appears it was Adam, Peter’s
brother, who played). However it seems
that he did play in a game not previously
▲ Peter Ndlovu starred for United between 2001 and 2004
included: H vs Malawi on 11th Mar 2001
(no goals). If correct, we have to reduce
Peter’s international appearances with
United to 25 with 20 goals. He remains
the Blade with most international goals
but he is equal, with two others, with 25
international caps.
Loanee internaionals: Ethan Ampadu (7
caps, Wales), Cameron Carter-Vickers
(1 cap, USA), Mo Besic (3 caps, Bosnia
Herzegovina), David Edgar (3 caps,
Canada), Toni Kallio (1 cap, Finland), Bjorn
Helge Riise (1 cap, Norway), Carl Robinson
(1 cap, Wales) and Ben Woodburn (2 caps,
Wales). No first team appearances: Mihkel
Askalu (3 caps, Estonia), Angelo Capello (5
caps, Belize), Adam Davies (2 caps, Wales),
Justin Haber (9 caps, Malta). EFL Cup only:
Li Tie (5 caps, China). Adam Davies has a
chance of removing himself from this list
later this season.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURE:
READING
In the event of any emergency you will hear a safety
message over the PA system. Remain where you are and
listen carefully to the announcement. Comply immediately
if it affects your area. Stewards, Police Officers and Officials
will direct you to safe areas, which may be through Exit
Doors/Gates to the street or on to the playing area. If you
are disabled or feel unsafe in a large crowd, remain where
you are until stewards assist you. Remain calm and do
not move unless the announcement affects your area.
