(m) Reiterated the importance of the Office's continued efforts to promote the development and<br />

strengthening of international refugee law, in particular through its cooperation with the International Institute of<br />

Humanitarian Law in San Remo.<br />

No. 37 (XXXVI) CENTRAL AMERICAN REFUGEES AND <strong>THE</strong> CARTAGENA<br />

DECLARATION (1985)<br />

The Executive Committee,<br />

(a) Recognized the complexity and gravity of the refugees situation in the Central American region which<br />

has recently received special attention;<br />

(b) Acknowledged the provisions relating to refugees in the Contadora Act for Peace and Co-operation in<br />

Central America;<br />

(c) Noted with interest the Cartagena Declaration, embodying the conclusions of the Colloquium on<br />

International Protection of Refugees in Central America, Mexico and Panama: Juridical and Humanitarian<br />

Problems, held in Cartagena, Colombia from 19 to 22 November 1984, under the auspices of the Government of<br />

the Republic of Colombia;<br />

(d) Welcomed the use of regional approaches in resolving refugee problems of regional scope, as amply<br />

demonstrated by the Colloquium.<br />
