THE ECHO AT LAKE
KÖNIGSSEE
by boot through the National
Park
The mighty rocks of the Berchtesgadener alps fall
nearly vertically to the shore of lake Königssee
whose deepest point is 192 meters. Who wants to
discover the unique nature around the most
popular mountain lake of Bavaria, has to take the
boat - and will listen to the echo.
Millions of echos in more than 100 years of electronic
river navigation
Because it’s a tradition and belongs to the river navigation through the lake Königssee like the
silent electronic motors the ships are equipped with. Thanks to prince regent Luitpold who was
afraid that the red deer in his favorite hunting grounds would run away. But he had no objection to
the loud gunshots that send the echo in the 1930s seven times from wall to wall over lake
Königssee. In the meantime, the gunshots were replaced with a Flügelhorn whose sounds are
discarded one time at the opposite rock wall and sound different every time, depending on the
player and the weather.
Around half an hour lasts the journey over the lake to the peninsula St.
Bartholomä, behind the great east wall of mount Watzmann.
