National 20mph speed limit to
officially passed into law
Speed limits in built-up areas will
be reduced to 20mph in Wales
from next year - a decision that
has proved controversial to some
motorists.
Welsh ministers have argued that
a 20mph speed limit will lower
road collisions and noise, as well
as encouraging people to walk or
cycle.
Trials of the reduced limit have
been taking place in areas of north
Cardiff over the last few months
and have divided the motoring
community. Road users have
been complaining of signage
confusion, congestion and stress
on gearboxes. The complaints also
include dangerous incidents where
other motorists who aren't aware of
the reduced limits have attempted

Work on Rhiwbina's Hub is reported
to be going well, ahead of its
expected re-opening in the autumn.
The former Rhiwbina Library
closed its doors back in April ahead
of the refurb, which will have taken
24 weeks to open if developments
continue to go according to plan.

The Welsh Parliament passed
the law in a vote in July. The law
was backed by Labour and Plaid
Cymru but opposed by the Welsh
Conservatives, who claimed that
the blanket rollout was 'ludicrous.'
Safety campaigners have argued
that the chances of someone
surviving being hit by a car at
20mph rather than 30mph is
seven times higher while stopping
distances are almost halved.
But some motorists have
expressed frustration at the rulings.
"How can we be expected to drop
the kids to school on a bike?" said
one angry motorist.
Scotland is expected to follow suit
with the speed limits in 2025.
Rhiwbina roads
struggle in heat
Several road in Rhiwbina were
cordoned off in August after a
heatwave caused parts of them to
collapse.
Temperatures reached 33°C in Cardiff
during the heatwave, which lasted for
over a week.
Sections of Pantmawr Road, Heol-y-
Deri, and Pantbach Road all suffered
during the extreme heat, and were
subsequently repaired by Cardiff
Council.
Councillor Jayne Cowan liaised with
the council to arrange the repairs, and
thanked members of the community
for taking proactive actions to resolve
the issues.
Scientists have warned that
heatwaves will become more
common due to climate change.

Road repairs for
Rhiwbina's
Sections of a Rhiwbina suburb
will begin undergoing road
improvements during early autumn.
Carriageway surface
improvements will be carried out
at Heol-y-Bryn and Heol-y-Coed.
The work will be phased over two
years due to the associated costs
of the repairs. The first phase will
be carried out in early September
while the second phase is pencilled
in to be resolved late 2023.
Some properties will be left
without vehicular access to their
properties during the works,
although the contractors have said
that all work will be carried out with
as little impact as possible.
Messages of
support for Rhod
Comedian Rhod Gilbert has been
inundated with goodwill messages
following his announcement that
he is undergoing treatment for
cancer at Velindre Hospital in July.
"As a proud patron of Velindre
Cancer Centre, I've trekked the
world, hosted chaotic quizzes and
star-studded comedy nights," he
said.
"I wouldn't wish this on anyone...
but who knows, maybe I'll come
out the other end with a new standup
show and a 40 minute rant
about orange squash," he added.
"Thank you everyone for your
support over the last few weeks
and months (and years). I'll be
disappearing for a while and won't
be commenting further, at least
not for now, whilst I focus on my
recovery."
The Welsh broadcaster has been
a popular presenter on national
TV shows and was also a regular
presenter on his own BBC Radio
Wales show. Gilbert added he was
working to reschedule his comedy
tour Book of John for early 2023.
ASBOs handed
out for park louts
Several ASBOs (Anti-Social
Behaviour Order) were handed out
in Caedelyn Park over the summer
following complaints of annoying
behaviour from youths.
