COMITATUS SCEPUSIENSIS
SZEPES MEGYE
SCEPUSIUM
(Official names in use prior to the late 19th century in subheading)
The southern part of SZEPES was conquered by the KINGDOM OF HUNGARY at the end of the 11 th c, when the
border of the Kingdom ended near KEZMAROK. The COMITATUS SCEPUSIENS/S (ROYAL COUNTY OF SZEPES)
was created in the 2 nd half of the 12th c. A COMITATE (MEGYE in Hungarian; KRAJ in Slovak) is the equivalent
of a county. In the 1250s the border of the Kingdom of Hungary through SZEPES shifted to the north near
PODoLiNEC and in 1260 the border moved northwest ending at the DUNAJEC RIVER where it still is today.
Subdivisions: From the beginning of the 15 th c, the COMITATUS/MEGYElKRAJ was subdivided into 3
PROCESSUSES/JARAs/OKRES (Latin/Hungarian/Slovak), the lowest-level administrative district, roughly the
equivalent of townships. A4th district was added in 1798. In the 2 nd half of the 19th c the number of
PROCESSUSES increased again and by 1918 there were 8 JARAs in SZEPES.
