Builds Classic Cottage 

on Quiet Bay

Andrea’s father has owned property on a quiet 

bay since 1997, and his dream was to have 

his whole family on the lake. He gave two 

lots to his daughters, and last year, Andrea and her 

husband Mark decided to build their dream cottage. 

They were familiar with the excellent construction 

work and reputation of the Hayter family who own 

RWH Construction, so they chose that company for 

the job. 

“We removed the old cottage that was previously on 

the lot and built the new custom cottage to blend 

in with the surrounding landscape of large pine 

trees and granite rock, handling all the permits 

and site plans,” says Ryan Hayter, who owns RWH 

Construction with his brother Adam. 

The classic four-bedroom 4,800 sq. ft. cottage is 

constructed of Normerica pine post and beam with 

large windows that take advantage of the lake 

views. The home’s exterior is black and stone, with 

an interior of white walls, black trim, and a rustic 

medium wood stain. 

Natural light pours into the great room with its 

timber frame cathedral ceilings and woodburning 

stone fireplace. Flowing from there is the modern 

farmhouse kitchen with open shelving for casual 

living. The three-season Muskoka room features a 

stone gas-burning fireplace. The recreation room 

above the three-car garage is a flexible space for the 

teens to hang out in with a pool table and bathroom. 

The 900 sq. ft. boathouse is the focus of outdoor 

living with a roof-top deck and hot tub.

The home has many energy-efficient features, 

including a mix of blown-in fibreglass and rigid 

insulation along with a high-efficiency forced air 

furnace. 

The couple wanted to make use of the empty 

space under the stairs, and after seeing pictures of 

a built-in bar on Pinterest, the RWH team brought 

the vision to reality. 

“The craftsmanship of the bar and all the custom 

wood trim is so detailed,” says Andrea. “We’re so 

happy with our stunning new cottage.” 

“The new cottage is miles ahead of the previous 

one,” says Ryan. “It’s a beautiful cottage that will 

last a lifetime.” 

Ryan says that all of the features and finishings in 

the home are available for customers to view in 

the RWH Construction showroom.

Creates Bright, Distinctive Kitchen 


The kitchen in Dan Stanford’s home dated from 

the 1970s, with old-fashioned almond cabinets, 

which, even though they had stood up well 

over the years, were quite dated. 

“I was in the process of renovating other parts of the 

house, so I thought it was time for a change,” says Dan 

Stanford, president of Cabinetree. “Plus, I wanted the 

kitchen to be larger and more user-friendly.” 

Dan’s approach to his own kitchen was the same as 

what he advises clients: to choose what you love. 

“I love natural walnut, which is a wood that many 

antiques are made of because of its grain and finish – 

it’s a personal preference of mine,” he says. 

Constructed in-house at Cabinetree, the walnut 

cabinets have a reverse raised centre panel made 

of solid wood, with brushed stainless steel handles 

and two-piece crown moulding where they meet the 

ceiling. Other favourite Cabinetree touches are the 

custom pantry next to the fridge which allows the 

fridge door to swing open freely. 

A unique feature in the kitchen is the breakfast nook 

which flows from the island. One of the Cabinetree 

designers showed Dan a photo of something similar 

which he thought was a great idea. 

“I wanted to sit comfortably at the table to read the 

newspaper,” says Dan. “It’s really a cozy spot and 

we recently had five guests sitting around it, even 

though the dining room table is just 8 ft. away. The 

grandchildren just love sitting there.” 

The granite-topped island is a focal point for a wine 

rack and two large pull-out drawers for bottles, which 

are stored vertically. 

The other countertops are made of Corian, which Dan 

says is a repairable, non-porous surface which easily 

integrates the sink. The hexagonal ceramic tile on the 

backsplash is in a range of tones which brings all the 

elements together. 

Continuing to go with what he loves, Dan selected 

high durability, luxury vinyl flooring to withstand wear 

and tear, in particular from his grandchildren who race 

trucks along the surface.

The bright kitchen has an abundance of natural and 

artificial light. The window is in the same place above 

the sink as in the previous kitchen, but there is now 

pot lighting throughout the space, and directed lighting 

with separate switches over the island and breakfast 

nook. 

“The new kitchen is much brighter and much more 

modern,” says Dan. “We entertained 13 guests on the 

weekend – it’s now easy to prepare meals without 

bumping into each other. It’s a comfortable space to be 

in.”

...Transforms Clear Lake Cottage into Lake House 


The small, dark and dreary cottage dated from 

the 1960s and Lorraine went along with her 

husband Alex’s desire to put in an offer on it, 

but only on the condition that Angela Jones, owner 

of Lakeshore Designs, would be the one to re-design 

it. Angela had done many previous projects for the 

couple over the years, including a complete makeover 

of their home. 

“The week after we bought the cottage, I invited 

Angela to come over and go through it,” says Lorraine. 

“Within a week, she presented us with a design plan, 

with room-by-room suggestions.” 

Angela Jones’ vision for the dated cottage was to 

transform it into a bright, fresh, lake house with a 

nautical vibe.

by having pull-out drawers under the beds for clothing, 

as the closets are small and the rooms aren’t big 

enough for dressers,” continues Lorraine. “In one of the 

bedrooms, there’s a queen bed on the bottom, with a 

custom loft bed above, perfect for guests.” 

In the small upstairs bathroom, Angela suggested 

“bumping out” the slanted ceiling to create room for a 

large double vanity, and added more space by switching 

the position of the toilet. This also resulted in more 

space for a pocket-sized nook in one of the bedrooms. 

The dark brown kitchen cabinetry was updated by 

painting the cupboards navy, replacing the hardware 

and countertops, and adding modern stools to the 

island. A coffee bar in the corner maximizes the space. 

“We suggested replacing all the windows on the main 

floor to bring in more light and to allow clearer views 

of the lake,” says Angela. “We went with a palette of 

white, navy and grey-blue, and added texture with 

board and batten on the walls and navy ship lap on the 

ceiling for a nice accent.” 

Angela’s design approach has resulted in a unified 

look on the lake house theme, with all-nautical décor, 

including anchor motifs, oars, paddles, sea paintings, 

whales and fish. She recommended carrying the colour 

theme to the exterior, which has also been painted navy 

and white.

Celebrating 20 Years of Land Conservation

This year, Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) celebrated 

20 years of land conservation in the Kawarthas. 

The past twenty years have included a number of 

important milestones for the organization. In 2005, KLT 

entered into its first Conservation Easement Agreement, 

which protected East Syndicate Island in Stony Lake. 

The first property it protected through ownership was 

Dance Nature Sanctuary in 2006. And in 2020, the 

charity acquired its first property that was protected 

as a direct result of community fundraising — Christie 

Bentham Wetland. 

The reasons why land conservation is important are 

clear. It ensures that sensitive ecosystems remain intact 

and continue to support the abundance of wildlife we 

cherish in the Kawarthas. The loon diving underwater 

as you paddle by, the deer you encounter on a quiet 

morning trail, or the row of Midland Painted Turtles you 

see basking on a log all require connected landscapes to 

survive and thrive now and into the future. 

Consider the lifespan of a Common Snapping Turtle, 

which can live more than 70 years. Protecting land 

today ensures the Snapping Turtle you see every year 

at your home or cottage will continue to be able to 

access the wetlands it relies on for decades. 

Land saved from development and allowed to remain 

in its natural state sequesters carbon, which helps 

bolster the Kawarthas’ resiliency against the very real 

effects of climate change. 

“I’m always struck by the courage of those first board 

members, first land donors, and first donors — they 

had a vision for the Kawarthas that saw natural and 

agricultural land as critical pieces of the region’s 

identity and future,” said Thomas Unrau, Director of 

Community Conservation. “They saw that land was 

at risk and acted to protect what mattered. Since 

then, we’ve grown to realize some of this vision, 

protecting incredible pieces of land in collaboration 

with landowners and our community. I continue 

to be inspired by the commitment of people in the 

Kawarthas who see land as an asset to our shared 

future.” 

KLT’s ability to protect land in the Kawarthas over the 

past two decades has been directly tied to the support 

of its dedicated donors and volunteers. Their passion 

has allowed the organization to protect and steward 

land, maintain trails and create spaces for people to 

connect with nature.

Estate Planning - The Family Cottage 

Everyone loves spending time at the family cottage, but 

as it comes time to plan for the next generation to take 

over the ownership and maintenance responsibilities, 

lots of questions can arise about the best way to kick 

start that transition. Some of the first questions we get 

asked when it comes time to put a succession plan in 

place are: 

Q: Will my kids have to pay taxes if I leave them the 

cottage in my Will? 

A: Typically it is your Estate that faces the tax burden, 

but which taxes are payable will depend on different 

factors. When an asset is left to children in a Will, 

“probate” taxes will typically apply, but can be paid 

by the Estate. The transfer may also result in capital 

gains taxes on any increase in value between when the 

cottage was first purchased, and the date of the next 

transfer. Some strategies to reduce the final tax burden 

may include preparing a secondary Will, or transferring 

the property to a trust, or a corporate owner. Good 

advice from an accountant is part of proper estate 

planning. 

Q: If I don’t have a Will, what happens to my 

cottage property? 

A: When a person passes away without a Will the 

distribution of their assets will be governed by how 

ownership of the asset is held, and by the applicable 

legislation. When a property is held as a joint tenant, 

in most cases, any surviving joint tenant automatically 

assumes the deceased’s ownership interests. If the 

deceased was the only owner, or if they owned their 

share of the property as a tenant in common, then 

the provisions of the Succession Law Reform Act will 

dictate how that interest is dealt with among the 

beneficiaries of the estate, and generally that legislation 

directs the interest to a surviving spouse and/or 

children. 

We find that people like to be able to take control 

over what happens to their estate, and not leave those 

decisions to the government and legislation of the day. 

While it may not seem like a pressing issue, its never 

too early to get a plan in place that gives you more 

control over the outcome!

THE LAND BETWEEN 

The Land Between Blue Lakes Program 

What do you mean, The Land Between? If 

you have not heard of it, this term refers to 

a charity that works to conserve, enhance 

and celebrate our region- and the term also refers to 

the unique landscape that the charity operates in- and 

which many associate with Cottage Country. 

The Land Between landscape sits between the rugged 

Canadian Shield to the north and the mixed hardwood 

plains of southern Ontario, and stretches from the 

Georgian Bay Coast to the Ottawa Valley. It is the 

last wilderness landscape in the southern half of the 

province. The area harbours rare species that are 

associated with geography, such as the five lined skink, 

Ontario’s only lizard, and the Blanding’s turtle, a species 

on the brink of extinction. However, this this landscape 

is a refuge for previously common, yet declining 

species from the north and south. Here you will find 

the river otter and the woodchuck, the green heron and 

the common loon, the osprey and the snapping turtle. 

they undermine these sensitive ecosystems, and reduce 

the fish populations that live in them and the species 

that rely on them. Today, we are seeing more algal 

blooms, fish kills, and invasive species. 

However, there are simple solutions that are easy to 

implement to bolster and care for our water and wild 

cousins! Solutions such as limiting LED night lighting 

that contributes to algal growth, distracts and harms 

pollinators and songbirds, but also attracts mosquitos; 

leaving as much native vegetation as possible in 

connected garden pods, or installing gardens at the 

shore using mainly native plants; limiting herbicide and 

pesticide sprays, even those touted as “natural”, not 

filling or bringing in soil to areas at the shore which 

contribute to more phosphorous loading, invasive 

plants, and erosion; and keeping natural slopes at the 

shore with healthy root masses to allow for waves to 

break gently and to keep the natural rhythms of the 

water intact. 

But what is also wondrous about this region is that 

is boasts more pocketed lakes than anywhere else 

in Canada; almost 3000 larger lakes, and more than 

30,000 smaller basins and wetland pockets. This may 

seem like a bounty ready for exploiting, however there 

is, as always, a catch, because all of these waters, while 

seemingly abundant, are actually extremely vulnerable. 

Their health is easily compromised, because these 

basins are underlain mainly by bedrock. Therefore, 

there is virtually no soil to absorb any pollutants or 

excess nutrients, especially when native vegetation that 

supports filtration processes is removed, and then also 

the shallow humus is a tenuous foundation for any 

natural regeneration after the landscape is disturbed.

with Climate Change, create conditions for turmoil; 

To assist the growing numbers of shoreland owners in 

achieving wins for their homes, communities, and local 

wildlife populations, The Land Between charity has 

created the Blue Lakes program. It is an ecolabel and 

suite of tools. Much like the global Blue Flag program 

that is a label awarded to marinas and beaches, the 

Blue Lakes program is a label awarded to groups on 

lakes that strive for stewardship excellence. Plus, the 

charity provides workshops, educational tools, and 

also data to help Lakeland owners succeed. The Land 

Between charity has gathered data from over 2000 

lakes and over 20 years, and works with landowners to 

understand trends.

Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) and 

Kawartha Food Share (KFS) are charitable 

organizations that rely on donations and 

volunteers to achieve our mission. We will gladly 

work with the community to help you achieve your 

giving goals. 

Here are a few tips when considering donating: 

1. The gift of your time: volunteering is an important 

aspect and greatly extends the work we can 

accomplish. There are big and small tasks that can 

make all the difference in the community. Contact 

a food bank or food security agency that is close to 

you, or KFS or KLFS directly for local opportunities. 

2. The gift of financial support: when you make a 

financial gift, you are supporting KLFS or KFS with 

the ability to purchase and transport food. We 

also have staff that deliver community programs, 

organize fundraising events, and manage volunteers. 

Equally as important, we can cover operational costs 

such as rent, utilities and insurance. We value your 

trust in us to direct as needed. 

3. The gift of food: in addition to non-perishables, 

both KLFS and KFS can receive fresh donations 

such as surplus produce from your garden or 

frozen foods from the grocery store. Personal care 

items such as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, 

body wash, feminine hygiene products and toilet 

paper are always in demand. If organizing a 

neighbourhood or office food drive, call to find out 

what our current needs are. 

4. The gift of awareness: food security and poverty 

are complex topics. Talking about and sharing 

credible information will help give a voice to 

those experience food insecurity and initiates the 

opportunity for conversations that help create 

change. Follow, like and share us on social media. 

5. The gift of attendance: purchasing tickets and 

attending a fundraising event or open house is both 

an entertaining and educational experience while 

supporting our worthwhile cause. 

Community support is detrimental to the success of 

our organizations. Reach out and ask how you can 

help, honour your commitment, learn about our work, 

and feel rewarded by helping others. Even the smallest 

gift or action can make a huge difference!
