largest tributary, the San 

Francisco River, flowing 

through town, Clifton’s 

citizens are currently working 

towards establishing a 

kayaking and rafting experience 

with a town beach 

park adjacent to US Highway 

191. At an elevation of 

3,500 feet, the town’s highest 

temperatures average 10 

degrees F cooler than Arizona’s 

major cities. 

Just six miles upriver, the 

Morenci Mine is the largest 

open-pit copper mine in all 

of North America at over 

100 square miles. There is 

a beautiful new mine overlook 

to enjoy at milepost 

174 on your drive up Highway 

191. Railroad buffs 

love to watch the intricate 

dance between the Morenci 

mine train and the Eastern 

Arizona Railroad at the historic 

Clifton transfer yard. 

For thrill seekers, Highway 

191 (formerly US 666 

– “The Devil’s Highway”) 

winds 75 miles through 

lush wilderness to Alpine. 

Prudent driving requires 

three hours to make the 

trip – one way! With all the 

surrounding hills, I have 

always wanted to try hang 

gliding, and hot air ballooning 

views have to be the 

best.

Angle Orchard celebrates 100 years 

In 2022 Angle Orchard, 

located on Mount Graham 

near Safford, Arizona, 

is celebrating 100 

years of family tradition. 

It began around 1922, 

when Andrew Preston and 

Viola Cooper Angle leased 

some land from the National 

Forest Service and began 

planting the orchard. The 

spot was chosen when Andrew 

noticed a wild peach 

tree growing in the area and 

realized it was a prime location 

for fruit trees. The 

Angles’ eight children assisted 

in dynamiting the 

granite rock, hauling in dirt 

and carrying water up from 

the canyon to create a nurturing 

environment for the 

young orchard. 

Tragically, Andrew Preston 

died in May 1929 from 

a ruptured appendix before 

getting to fully enjoy the 

fruits of his labor. Angle 

Orchard was passed on to 

his son, Rome. 

In 1962 another son, Andrew, 

and his wife Zereta 

Farnsworth Angle became 

owners of the orchard. Andrew 

served as a Marine 

and also spent time logging 

on Mount Graham. He 

broke both hips in a logging 

accident and was left 

with a significant limp. He 

was a hard worker and put 

in a significant amount of 

manual labor to improve 

the health and quality of the 

trees over the 18 years he 

owned the orchard.

In 1980 Andrew and 

Zereta’s son, Eldon Angle, 

purchased the orchard. 

Eldon, a biologist 

by profession, spent 25 

years planting, grafting and 

keeping the orchard in tiptop 

shape. His hard work 

and wisdom have been instrumental 

in the continuing 

success of Angle Orchard. 

Eldon’s wife, Irene, 

helped run the barn, assisting 

customers with picking 

and purchasing fruit. 

On July 1, 2005 Eldon’s 

sister Betty Ann Larson 

purchased the place. She 

managed it for several years

with her three adopted 

sons and eight children before 

being diagnosed with 

dementia. Betty had a great 

desire to provide quality 

fruit to the community at a 

reasonable cost and worked 

hard to provide this service. 

In 2018 her son Paul 

Larson took ownership 

of the orchard. Paul is the 

great-grandson of Andrew 

Preston and Viola Angle 

and shares his great-grandfather’s 

copper-red hair color. 

As a young child, Paul 

spent many hours at the orchard 

with his grandfather 

Andrew, learning how to 

care for it. With the assistance 

of his wife, children, 

siblings and cousins, Paul 

is working to not only keep 

Angle Orchard thriving but 

also to improve production 

and quality of the fruit. 

The common thread of all 

who have owned Angle 

Orchard is a commitment 

to hard work. Fruit trees 

require year-round watering. 

They must be pruned 

in the winter and thinned 

by hand in the spring. Harvest 

begins in the summer 

and continues through the 

fall. There is no off season 

for orchard laborers. 

Angle Orchard is well 

known for delicious, juicy 

peaches fresh from the trees 

and crisp, sweet apples. The 

peach harvest starts around 

July 4 with Saturn peaches 

and ends with O’Henry 

peaches the last week of

correct when he decided 

it was a good location for 

fruit trees, particularly apples. 

The mountain rains, 

elevation and nested valley 

work together to provide 

the perfect climate for delicious, 

crisp apples. Gala 

apples start the season in 

early August. 

Golden Delicious and 

Arkansas Black apples, 

both customer favorites, are 

ripe in September. The last 

apples to be harvested, in 

mid-October, are Fuji and 

Blushing Golden. Other 

varieties available include 

Red Delicious, Winesap, 

Elstar, Granny Smith, Empire 

and Jonathan.

Dankworth Unit features fishing, wildlife and history 

Dankworth Pond

The Dankworth 

Unit, comprised of 

160 acres of land 

surrounding a 15-acre 

body of water, is located 

a short distance south of 

Roper Lake. It provides 

day-use facilities for 

family outings, fishing 

and nature trail hiking, 

and a 95-degree natural 

artesian hot spring. The 

pond has catfish, bluegill, 

sunfish and crappie. 

The area is shaded and 

restroom facilities adjoin 

a parking area. It also has 

picnic ramadas and a playground. 

A large sign along 

the water’s edge highlights 

the complex aquatic ecosystem 

of the pond. Coots, 

migratory ducks and other 

water birds are often seen 

on the pond, and signs of 

beaver can be found around 

the water’s edge. 

A network of trails provides 

opportunities for 

short walks and longer 

hikes. Benches provide a 

place to relax and listen to 

the birds along the way. The 

Dos Arroyos Trail starts at 

the far end of the pond. Part 

of this scenic ¾-mile trail 

takes you along 

a meandering 

stream covered 

with towering 

cottonwoods, 

seep willows and 

mesquite trees. 

This riparian 

area is a rare and 

fragile oasis in 

the desert. Rabbits, 

quail and 

songbirds are 

abundant in the 

area. 

A spur off the Dos Arroyos 

Trail leads uphill to 

the Dankworth Village, 

which features a series of 

replica Native American 

buildings representing various 

periods in the Gila Valley’s 

cultural history. A trail 

through the village includes 

stops to see replicas of 

grinding stones, stone tools, 

petroglyphs, roasting pits,

pit houses and wickiups. A 

trail brochure is visible at 

the village, and an activity 

guide is available to teachers 

and home-school parents 

from the BLM Safford

All Things Desert, one of Superior’s newest businesses, held its ribbon cutting in April. 




Local flavors and more at All Things Desert 

There’s a new shop on Superior’s Main Street where 

you can choose from 10 kinds of fudge made locally 

in southern Arizona, pick up hiking accessories 

before hitting the local trails, browse a varied art gallery 

and more. 

All Things Desert, located at 161 Main St., opened their 

doors on Feb. 1, 2022 and celebrated with an April 8 ribbon 

cutting. 

“We had been talking about finding a place to have our 

own store. We’ve had our artwork and other things in various 

locations, and decided we wanted a place of our own,” 

said author/artist Rita Betti, who co-owns All Things Desert 

along with artists Deb Kay and Terry Nolan. When 

Main Street’s Heart Song Gallery was about to close due 

to illness, the three offered to take it over. And so, the transition 

started this January. 

“We wanted to specialize in products made from the 

desert,” said Betti – and so they have. The sh elves at All 

Things Desert carry mesquite flour, jelly and coffee, prickly 

pear oil, natural yucca soap, and salves, balms and oils

made from jojoba and 

creosote. Then there’s the 

fudge counter, boasting 10 

flavors – including prickly 

pear, chocolate cherry, 

spicy Mexican and peanut 

roll – all crafted using 

organic ingredients. On 

weekends, the shop offers 

tastings of their fudge and 

mesquite bean coffee. 

The shop’s hiking supplies 

– “We were encouraged 

to carry them, with all 

the trails in the area,” said 

Betti – include water bladders, 

miniature stoves, food 

packs, small propane tanks 

and survival bracelets.

co-owners, Deb Kay has 

painted a number of murals 

throughout downtown 

Superior; Terry Nolan creates 

alcohol ink drawings 

and paintings as well as designed 

furniture; and Betti, 

who has written several 

children’s books and one 

novel, crafts jewelry from 

old watches as well as macramé 

and painting. Other 

artists in the shop’s gallery 

include Gary Bennett, 

a previous art director for 

Arizona Highways; photographers 

Bill Olson and 

Sam McCallie, who also 

offers rocks and minerals 

for sale; acrylic artist Debbie 

Olson; and potter Gina 

Brodmerkel. 

“It’s been great,” Kay 

said of All Things Desert’s 

opening months in business. 

“People say this is an

Saturday bash, a monthly 

three-block party Miami

last November. At this family-driven

Western art and more – or 

step into one of downtown 

Miami’s antique shops and 

art galleries, all while DJs 

provide music that ranges 

from oldies to modern pop

large collection of antique radios, My

1917. In addition, Miami Art Works on 

Sullivan Street hosts an open mic night. 

Then there’s the street food; Sonoran 

hot dogs from Gordo’s lonchera, pulled 

pork from The Lunchbox and freshly 

spun cotton candy. Sitdown meals are 

an option, too, as Miami restaurants 

like Guayo’s El Rey, Los Jilbertos and 

Burger House are open during the party. 

During Second Saturdays, Sullivan 

Street is closed to vehicle traffic, allowing 

guests a safe place to walk, rollerblade, 

skateboard, create chalk art, 

dance to the music, picnic, set up lawn 

chairs and enjoy the atmosphere.

The Salado Pueblos of Globe

What do a community 

college 

campus, a bare 

hilltop and a museum have 

in common? They are sister 

Salado-era pueblos on 

a 1.5-mile stretch of Six 

Shooter Canyon Road, 

south of Globe. 

Like Pueblo Grande in 

Phoenix, Besh ba Gowah in 

Globe is a city park. However, 

the 200-room complex 

of Besh allows a much 

more intimate experience. 

One of the largest Salado 

ruins, Besh was first 

surveyed in 1883. Unofficial 

excavation of the ruins 

occurred in the 1920s, followed 

by Irene Vickery’s 

official excavation in the 

1930s. Additional excavations 

and reevaluation took 

place in the 1980s. 

Salados settled the hilltop 

about 1225 C.E. and 

began building the complex 

that would become known 

as Besh ba Gowah on the 

remains of abandoned Hohokam 

pit houses. The 

settlement grew and prospered 

for 200 years, when 

a severe drought triggered 

conflict. It is theorized that 

warriors from Besh raided 

and burned Gila Pueblo in a 

fight over water. In the end, 

that didn’t save Besh. By 

1500 C.E., it stood empty. 

Today the partially restored 

ruin survives as a 

picturesque look into the 

lives of those who lived 

there. 

A small museum houses 

artifacts ranging from 

sandals to pottery to shell, 

all found on the site. An 

interpretive guide, available 

at the gift store, states 

that “…artifacts retrieved 

from Besh ba Gowah represent 

one of the largest 

single-site Southwestern 

archaeological collections 

in existence.” A slide show 

shares photos of the 1980s 

excavations. 

If you can’t resist museum 

shops, you will definitely 

want to spend some 

time in Besh’s gift shop.

archeology to cookbooks,

children’s books, lists of local plants and 

animals, and ghost hunting. (Globe-Miami 

is reputedly filled with spirits of the 

undead.) Other treats in the shop include 

afghans, Native American jewelry and 

kachinas, and local delicacies. 

For gardeners, a seasonal garden features 

plants cultivated by the Salados, including 

squash, cotton, pumpkins and amaranth. 

A hands-on display lets the young 

and young-at-heart practice corn grinding 

skills using real metates. 

Birding is another activity that attracts 

visitors to Besh. A cauldron of vultures 

roosts in a nearby sycamore down on Jesse 

Hayes Road. Late afternoon is the time 

to watch them glide in lazy loops as they 

head home. Other birds to watch for are 

phainopeplas, an assortment of hummingbirds 

and warblers, vermillion flycatchers 

and lesser goldfinches. If you’re very 

lucky, a bald eagle may stop by to visit. 

Besh ba Gowah is noted for the Festival 

of Lights that takes place there on the first 

Saturday of December. Volunteers line the 

walls with thousands of luminarias. The 

sounds of drums and flutes fill the night 

as Apache dancers and musicians share 

their culture. On occasion smaller events 

such as book signings, archaeology talks 

and pottery demonstrations are scheduled.

Traveling south on Six Shooter Canyon 

Road, scan the cliff as you cross the 

bridge where Ice House Creek joins Pinal 

Creek. Pinal Pueblo once stood on the top. 

Archeologists believe that the 60-room 

pueblo served as the communications center 

for the area. Ultimately, Pinal was destroyed 

by the ravages of pot hunters and 

construction of a power line. 

If you travel approximately 1.5 miles 

further south on Six Shooter Canyon 

Road, you will see the entrance to the Gila 

Pueblo Campus of Eastern Arizona College. 

Imagine taking freshman English in a 

reconstructed pueblo! Add in that it is the 

type site for the Salado culture, and Gila

Pueblo is a special place. Established as a daughter 

settlement of Besh about 1225 C.E., Gila Pueblo 

flourished for about 175 years. Successive fires, 

an earthquake and raids left the pueblo deserted by 

1400 C.E. The survivors vanished, like all the other 

Salados. 

Follow the drive uphill and you will find the reconstructed 

pueblo excavated and rebuilt by Harold 

Gladwin in the 1930s. Unlike at Besh, stucco covers 

the exterior of the Gila Pueblo reconstruction. In 

the 1970s, Charmion McKusick excavated 13 more 

rooms. Additional rooms of the 200-room complex 

remain untouched. If you follow the self-directed 

walk around the building, you will see the stone ruins 

uncovered by McKusick. Native cacti fill empty 

rooms where fifty years ago, McKusick discovered 

secrets of a lost culture. 

Because Gila Pueblo is an active campus, guided 

tours and informational material are not available. 

However, for birders, the broad mesquites of Gila 

Pueblo offer cool spots to rest and observe. Orange 

dragonflies stop at a water-lily-filled pond populated 

by mosquito fish and turtles. 

When visiting these old sites, please be respectful.

Start a winery, if you are Tim 

Trent. A trip to France to visit his 

wife Daisy’s family inspired the newly retired 

Trent to take up viticulture – growing 

wine grapes. Preparation took several years, 

but in 2013 the first 300 vines were planted. 

The first harvest took place in 2015. By

For families, the Waggin’ Train Zoo

It’s only a short trip down the hill to 

the stables where you will be greeted 

by ducks, donkeys, a miniature horse 

and three alpacas named Gilligan, 

Ginger and Mary Ann. After visiting, 

photos and a ride back up, thirsty travelers 

can try slushies named after the 

alpacas. (Plain for the young ones and 

mixed with estate wines for adults.)

I ART Globe under the 

sponsorship of the Cobre 

Valley Center for the Arts 

(CVCA). Her goal was 

to use art to counteract 

the general depression 

caused by Covid, to focus 

attention on the flora,

was added to the Stairizona Trail. Native artist Averian Chee depicted a panorama of a

projects in 12 months. The 

group chose two major areas 

of focus. Murals in and 

near downtown would celebrate 

Globe. The Stairizona 

Trail would highlight 1930s 

WPA-built stairs, retaining 

walls and sidewalks with 

art featuring area plants 

and animals. Invitations to 

participate went out to 76 

groups and individuals. 

I ART Globe caught fire 

and exceeded expectations. 

In little more than 14 

months, the organization 

has been responsible for the 

creation of 25 artworks and 

sponsored 9 art events, including 

the popular Chalkathon. 

A wide range of 

partners, grants and dedicated 

volunteers, including 

Wilshire and Art Director 

Regina Ortega, made this 

possible.

Over time the vision of 

Stairizona has expanded 

from a single circuit around 

downtown. Two additional 

loops have been added, allowing 

hikers to walk 1.4, 

2.6 or 3.5 miles. Expansion 

to include the historic 

Globe Cemetery is being 

considered at this time.

ART Globe also wants to 

design code-compliant signage 

with information on 

the WPA and key locations 

along the trail, including 

G Hill, pedestrian bridges 

and stairs. Local artist 

Katie Stewart is working 

on a mosaic project for the 

Yuma stairs.

opens in 

Roosevelt 



This spring Roosevelt’s newest 

restaurant, The Dam Grill and 

Chill, opened its doors – and, 

said owner Dominick Argenziano, it saw 

packed houses in its first week. Brought 

to the lake area by Argenziano, an 

award-winning Tucson restaurateur, and 

featuring the skills of experienced local 

chef Delan McLaughlin, The Dam offers 

pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads and 

more. 

Argenziano, who operates a namesake 

Italian restaurant in Corona de Tucson 

along with his wife Ann, is no stranger 

to Roosevelt. He has been coming to 

the lake on fishing trips since childhood, 

and stopping for a bite at Boston’s Lake 

House Grill – and it’s at the former location 

of Boston’s, next door to the Spring 

Creek Store, that The Dam now welcomes 

diners. Argenziano said he would 

drive past the site and think, “Something’s 

got to go in there.” He met Mc- 

Laughlin, the new venture’s chef/general 

manager, and Brandy Ballard, The Dam’s 

house manager/bartender, years ago and 

they became friends. 

“I’m blessed to be working for Dominick,” 

said McLaughlin, who has been a 

chef at several lakeside establishments – 

Ffinch’s Waterfront Kitchen and Bar, the

pizza crust are also available. Diners 

can enjoy a meal inside or on the 

28-seat patio, and watch sports on 

several big screen TVs.
