It’s important to point out that game design as a topic of investigation and exploration is also becoming part of conventional curricula (undergraduate and graduate level) at many prestigious universities including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Carnegie-Mellon University, and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), among others. E VENTS The electronic gaming industry has several major industry events per year, the biggest of which are listed here: � Electronic Entertainment Exposition, or E3 (www.e3expo.com) The leading U.S.-based annual industry trade show. � The Game Developers Conference (www.gdconf.com) The Independent Games Festival held each year at the GDC is a great way to showcase your independent game work and have it seen by developers and publishers from around the globe. � SIGGRAPH (www.siggraph.org) The largest annual gathering of computer graphics and graphics technology companies. A great way to learn more about cutting-edge graphics technologies. � Electronic Consumer Trade Show (www.ects.com) Europe’s premier interactive industry trade show. � MILIA (www.milia.com) An international game content event held in Cannes, France. INDUSTRY MAGAZINE Game Developer magazine (www.gdmag.com) is a must read. I suggest reading the “Post-mortems” offered in every issue very carefully. INDUSTRY-RELATED SITES Numerous industry-related sites are popping up all over the place. I visit only a few of them regularly. Here are my recommendations: � Gamasutra (www.gamasutra.com) � Blues News (www.bluesnews.com) � Game Daily (www.gamedaily.com) O RGANIZATIONS One great way to meet other game developers, and those interested in learning more about all aspects of game development, is to show up at a meeting of your local IGDA chapter. Established chapters all over the world are listed on its web site. If you don’t have a local chapter, but plenty of local interest, you can always start your own chapter! � International Game Developers Association (www.igda.org) � Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (www.interactive.org) � Interactive Digital Software Association (www.idsa.com) BREAKING IN! If you aren’t hired “out of school” based on your portfolio of work or a striking game demo/sample, then launching your career from the QA department is the way to go. You can always order back issues of Game Developer magazine, which contains many articles and stories about getting into the industry.
