But duringthe so-called Gilded Age in which young Parrish would makehis mark, America thrust itself forward into an era of
breathtaking change. While Twain’ssneering monikerfor the late-nineteenth century expressed a dichotomybetween glittering surfaces and shabby realities, there was amore interesting juxtaposition occurring in American culturethat Maxfield Parrish embraced and reconciled with seeminglyeffortless excellence and charm. In his legendaryautobiography, Henry Adams described the year ofParrish’sbirth, 1870, as “thclose of the literaryepoch, when quarterlies gave way to monthlies letter-press toillustration volumes to pages.”Six years later inPhiladelphia’sCentennial Exposition, the telephone, typewriter, and electric light were introduced to the world. Buteven as technology and commerce inaugurated an age ofdizzying light and noise, Americans also instinctively reachedback, eager to hold on to a “viion splendid”ofbygone simplicity and authentic beauty. Parrish’sworkreveled in that sensibility while serving new economic andmaterial realities. At the heart of this combination wasAmerica’snew mass-market for magazines which, ashistorian Matthew Schneirov describes, “soght toelevate middle-class tastes through exposure to greatliterature and art.”From 1895 onwards, Parrish receivednumerous commissions from the likes of Scribner’sCollier’s Harper’s and Century to produce lushillustrations for articles and covers. It was an auspicious timeto be an illustrator, as technological advances increased thequality and quantity of pictures in publications, while a massivesurge in advertising funded the cultural reach of thesemagazines (cont).
