You can also reduce harm by caring for yourself after having hurt your- self. You can cool, desinfect, or bandage injuries. You can rest or sleep. If necessary go to the ER. People there often can’t understand, and they might hold you in hospital for a few days, even against your will. But bul- lying ER staff should never keep you from caring for yourself when the damage is too big for you to cope with on your own. If you allow somebody else to hurt you always agree on a safe word that means: Stop immediately! You can try to replace the hurting with something else entirely, like ex- cercising or relaxation, whatever works for you. Perhaps the How do you care for yourself? section gives you some ideas.
