Agom (Arlene) Dawing thanks the Australian Government for its support to the Ichananaw through the Direct Aid Program’s grant for the printing of the educational materials we developed, on behalf of the Dananao Elementary School and the Ichananaw, at the Australian Embassy’s NAIDOC Week event on July 10, 2009 in Makati, where we presented our project. Indigenizing Education in a Kalinga Public School | 28 resources intended for use in the school as well as being of value to the wider community. Completing the barangay census In Chananaw, barangay midwife Manay (Marcelina) Sagmayaw hopes to complete the barangay census initiated by Maria, with assistance also from Agom (Arlene) Dawing. From Australia, Maria hopes to provide a statistical analysis of the census findings from the households already surveyed, and provide the Ichananaw with an interim report over the coming months. Continuing the partnerships already established It is now up to the Ichananaw and all the organizations which we have helped establish mutual linkages to build on these relationships. We are already aware of the intentions of the Ateneo Center for Educational Development, Cartwheel Foundation and Volunteering for International Development from Australia to continue their involvement with the Ichananaw. We hope that others will also take opportunities as they arise to engage with the Ichananaw in the future. For example, AusAID’s increased engagement with the Department of Education for the improvement of public education for indigenous peoples, provides an ideal opportunity to continue the positive relationship between the Australian Embassy and the Dananao Elementary School.
