FROM THE TOUCHLINE
I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The
Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this
afternoon for our game against Normanton Knights in the
National Conference League Division Two.
We welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Knights to Woolston and
hope that they have had a safe journey across town and enjoy our hospitality today.
We have only hosted Normanton once before, and that was in 2020 just before the
season got curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have been in fine form this
year and currently sit in fourth place in the league table, two places above us. We are
currently occupying the final play off position but with Dewsbury Celtic breathing down
our necks we know that a win today is vital if we are to remain in the top six.
Last time out we entertained run away league leaders Heworth and for sixty minutes
we really held our own and at only 12-10 behind we had a great chance but unfortunately
three late tries for the visitors saw them claim the win.
Our NWML side are once again at Leigh East ‘A’ this afternoon (12.30pm kick off) and
they will be hoping to back up their huge win over Liverpool Lizards last time out and
get back into the top four. They are away again next Saturday at Halton Simms Cross
before hosting local rivals Crosfields ‘A’ on Saturday 20th August; 2.30pm kick off.
Our final home NCL game of the season is on Saturday 3rd September when we host
Dewsbury Moor Maroons; this will be a big celebration day with sponsors and past
players invited and following the game there will be a Race Night commencing at 5pm
and then around 8pm it will be ‘Bongo Bingo’ time. Make sure you are free that day as
it will be great entertainment.
Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not
bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!!

Public Relations Officer
The National Conference League have announced that Irish Sportswear brand,
O’Neills, are to be their Sportswear Partner for 2022 and beyond.
This agreement will see O’Neills Irish International Sportswear provide touch-line
apparel for all 48 NCL clubs that will readily identify official team coaches, trainers,
physios, and substitutes. O’Neills will also provide a dozen water bottles for each club.
Speaking of the partnership, Paul Berry, O’Neills UK Sales Manager said, “When
Trevor and the committee asked us to consider working with the NCL, we jumped at
the chance. We identified an opportunity to help highlight official team touch line staff
through the provision of coloured t-shirts, in a similar way to that in Super League and
International Fixtures. It was felt it would help referees and match officials to better
manage the touchlines and we were happy to oblige.”
“The community game is the heartbeat of the sport and we have been fortunate
enough to have been able to do business with a number of the NCL clubs over the past
few years which has allowed us to build up a strong portfolio of customers within the
Rugby League sector.
You now see O’Neills kit at every level of Rugby League from grassroots Under 7s
teams right through to some of the top teams within Super League and the NRL.”
“Last year it was great to see St Helens being crowned Super League Champions
wearing our kit and for Penrith Panthers being crowned NRL Champions - also in
O’Neills kit, just ten years after we entered the UK market.”
“O’Neill’s Sportswear are proud to be known as the brand leader globally within Rugby
League and we certainly felt that we wanted to put something back into rugby league at
community level to support the clubs, their volunteers and their players.”
Chair of the NCL, Trevor Hunt, added “It is fantastic that a company of the standing of
O’Neills, is partnering the National Conference League, and we are delighted to have
them on board. Every one of the NCL clubs will benefit from this, and it will certainly
add yet another high-quality element to the presentation of our competition.”
We are looking for outgrown rugby boots
from sprogs to junior sizes!
Have your children outgrown their boots but they still
have plenty of games left in them?
Donate them to us and leave a little note in them to
pass on! i.e. won a competition tell the next child who
receives them to encourage them.
We will ensure these boots are passed on to
disadvantaged children who can’t afford to buy new
ones so they can continue playing the great game
and don’t miss out!

WOOLSTON ROVERS 10 HEWORTH 28
NCL 23/07/2022
Woolston Rovers put in a sterling display against run away league leaders Heworth but three late
tries saw the visitors claim the win in a hard fought National Conference League Division Two
fixture at the Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club.
Heworth opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute when scrum half Liam Jackson dummied
his way through the Rovers defence to score on the right. Stand off Danny Allan converted and
then nine minutes later a long ball out wide found winger Adam dent in space to score in the right
corner. Allan landed a fine touchline conversion.
Two minutes before the break Rovers got themselves back into the game when substitute Josh
Sudlow managed to slip the ball out in the tackle superbly to find hooker Adam Files who scored
under the posts. Full back Aaron Barber converted to make the half time score 12-6 in Heworth’s
favour.
Twelve minutes into the second half some slick handling by Rovers saw the ball moved across
the pitch to reach centre Kieran Moore who scored wide out on the right to narrow the gap top just
two points and then on the hour Heworth were temporarily reduced to twelve men when second
row Leon Watkinson was sin binned for dissent but five minutes later, despite having a numerical
disadvantage, the visitor’s managed to move clear once again as substitute Ben Barnard spotted
a gap in the Rovers defence to score. Allan added the conversion.
Almost immediately the visitors were over once again when winger Billy Sturdy broke clear to
score under the posts. Allan converted and then Rovers had loose forward Ryan Brown sent off
for throwing a punch, whilst Watkinson was given a yellow card for the second time for striking
and then a couple of minutes later Heworth centre George Elliott and Rovers substitute Alex Smith
were yellow carded after a brief altercation.
Heworth rounded off the win with a Sturdy touchdown in the final minute to complete a 28-10
victory that sees them open up a seven point lead at the top of the table.
Best for Rovers were prop forwards Ryan Hickman and Harry Files along with substitute Scott
Whiteley.

Woolston Rovers ‘A’ put up a brave performance before going down to a defeat at the hands of
Leigh East ‘A’ in the NWML Division Three on Saturday afternoon at Leigh Sports Village.
Leigh East opened the scoring with a try from winger Daniel Richardson but that was soon cancelled
out when Rovers loose forward Liam Lawton went over for a try.
East moved back into the lead when second row Chris Brand scored. Full back Brad Hodkinson
converted but then a try from Rovers second row Ben Crewe made the half time score 10-8 in
East’s favour.
The second half started with the home side crossing for two tries from stand off James
Molyneaux, the latter converted by Hodkinson and then it was the turn of Hodkinson to go over for
a try that he converted himself to put his side in command at 26-8.
Rovers briefly threatened a revival when hooker James Tarpey scored a try that scrum half Jay-
Jay Catterall converted but that hope was quickly extinguished as East scored once again through
Richardson. Hodkinson added the conversion.
East finished strongly with further tries from hooker Ryan Green and a third for Molyneaux that
were both converted by Hodkinson to make the final score 44-14 to East ‘A’.
Best for Rovers ‘A’ were loose forward Liam Lawton, hooker James Tarpey and stand off Elliott
Best.

WOOLSTON ROVERS ‘A’ 72 LIVERPOOL LIZARDS 0
NWML 27/07/2022
Woolston Rovers ‘A’ produced a ruthless performance to claim a big win over a very brave
Liverpool Lizards side in the NWML Division Three on Wednesday evening at the Limestone
Construction Field, Monk Sports Club.
Rovers opened the scoring in the third minutes when second row Sam Vernon broke clear on the
halfway line and raced fifty metres, evading three attempted tackles, to score under the posts.
Stand off Craig Lawton converted and five minutes later centre Dan Griffiths sold a ‘dummy’ and
went through the gap before sprinting thirty metres to score under the posts. Lawton added the
conversion.
Just before the midway point of the half a short ball from D Griffiths put full back Ben Roberts
through a gap and he raced thirty metres to score at the side of the posts. Lawton converted and
then winger Olly parr collected a Liverpool kick and went sixty metres down the left wing to score
at the side of the posts. Lawton added the conversion.
On the half hour D Griffiths sent Roberts away down the left from a scrum and he weaved back
inside before finding scrum half jay-Jay Catterall and he put hooker Dylan Alcock over on the right.
Lawton converted and then straight from the restart Rovers moved downfield and Alcock collected
the ball on the halfway line and went fifty metres to score under the posts. Lawton added the
conversion.
A minute before the break D Griffiths broke clear down the left and he passed to Catterall who
scored his first ever try at the side of the posts. Lawton converted to make the half time score 42-0
in Rovers favour.
Rovers moved further ahead eight minutes into the second half when from a scrum on their own
forty metre line the ball was sent out to Greek second row Thodorhs Nianiakas who brushed off
three defenders on a sixty metre run to score his first try in England under the posts. Lawton
converted and five minutes later substitute Ryan Palin made a fifty metre break that stretched
the Lizards defence and that allowed fellow substitute Nathan Maguire to score under the posts.
Lawton added the conversion.
The onslaught continued when a great short ball from substitute Rob Griffiths sent prop forward
Lewis Dawson through a gap and he went fifty metres, outpacing the chasing pack, to score his
first try for the club at the right of the posts. Lawton converted and then on the hour a great ball
from Alcock put Vernon clear and he raced forty metres to score under the posts. Lawton added
the conversion.
Six minutes later a nice offload from D Griffiths saw Nianiakas collect and race forty metres to
score under the posts. Lawton completed a perfect evening with the boot with his twelfth
successful conversion to make the final score 72-0 to Rovers as the referee brought the game
to an early close due to further injuries to the Liverpool side.
The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers teenage hooker Dylan Alcock on his debut for the
club. He was very well supported by second row pair Thodorhs Nianiakas and Sam Vernon.
