8 NEWS www.finishingmagazine.co.uk Carlisle opens new centre Driven by the culture of continuous improvement, Carlisle continues to invest in its facilities to demonstrate product innovation and keep improving customers’ experience. End of June marked the face-to-face opening of the new Center, after the virtual inauguration in September 2021. Over the three days the laboratory was visited by over 120 people; from Carlisle Fluid Technologies’ distributors, partners, paint companies, end users, as well as the internal team members from the entire EMEAI region. The participants took part in a structured event with morning workshops, afternoon technology and product presentations, ending with the evening dinner and networking. The event was opened by the european sales director – liquid, Klaus Hösch, followed by the Center presentation from Thierry Bachelard, EMEAI technical manager, who has been overseeing the project since its first ideas to the opening. After that, the participants split into groups, participating in different workshops held by the EMEA technology experts: Powder and Sealants & Adhesives, Fast-set and Manual liquid finishing, Automatic robotic application and Curing. Last but not least, also a tour of the manufacturing facilities, presented by the value stream manager, Graham Alford. In the afternoon, Carlisle Fluid Technologies’ global Product Management Team and Strategic Business Unit Leaders presented their respective technologies and dedicated product range innovations. The majority of those were remote which was enabled with the Center’s brand-new meeting room with the live AV-system. The Inauguration also presented an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the company’s recent product launches to the EMEAI market. The visitors got to see the new ms powder elite topcoater, RansFlex AA electrostatic manual spray gun and the trail blazing IntelliFlow technology with the RM2 and RF2 proportioners. In addition, this was the first opportunity to view the IS40 system for Fast-set demonstrating spraying polyurea. Carlisle Fluid Technologies believes this customer demonstration and training center is essential to demonstrate their diverse and efficient product ranges to distributors, end users and collaborators. Upon agreement, the facility enables equipment and material compatibility tests. In addition, the Center is also dedicated to organized training sessions to continue developing and improving the finishing community’s knowledge and expertise. Galvanizing award winners Galvanizers Association is pleased to announce the winners of the Galvanizing Awards 2022, in a bumper year for excellent design, joint winners and special mentions. After previous virtual events, the Awards were once again held at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London on 1st July. Judges awarded the following projects for outstanding interpretations of what galvanized steel can offer the built environment. The best use of galvanizing in architecture was presented jointly to Architecture 00 for C1 Design District London, a new, landmark, permanent and purpose-designed workspace for London’s creative industries, and PUP Architects for Surrey Docks Farm, a city farm project that merges educational, community and agricultural functions at Rotherhithe. A special mention went to Nissen Richards Studio for their work at Sutton Hoo, the Anglo-Saxon royal burial ground in Suffolk. The Art Award continues to grow in popularity. This year the outstanding permanent sculpture, Boulby Miner by Katie Ventress, which was made to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of Boulby Mines, Yorkshire, caught the judge’s imagination, whilst the Detail category went to the Art Barn, Devon, by Thomas Randall-Page. The retrofit project was recognized for its numerous galvanized steel details throughout the entire build, which have been uniquely designed from scratch. For a number of years now the Sustainability category has continued to offer a vision of how galvanized steel excels as a circular, companion material. Continuing this theme the award this year went to Architecture Ensemble for Flimwell Park. This sustainable woodland development in East Sussex blends living, working, recreation and learning, and showcases the versatility of hybrid material structures. Judges thought the standout engineering project of 2022 was Swing Bridge at Crystal Palace Park by Tonkin Liu. Part-time floating sculpture, part-time bridge, the galvanized steel piece showcases Tonkin Liu’s decade long immersion in biomimetic structures and delivers swinging to access to the park river banks whilst harnessing undulating geometry for structural strength. Last but not least, the Duplex Award was given to GK Engineering for the Crown- Goodluck Hope Building, part of a new neighbourhood of 804 new apartment homes at the historic Leamouth peninsula, London. The steelwork that forms the "Crown" is hot dip galvanized and polyester powder coated. It creates a prominent feature for the area and provides a dramatic viewing platform at the top of the building overlooking the O2 Arena and River Thames. FinishingJuly/August 2022
