TRADE MISSIONTO SURINAMETrade missions have a very essential part incommercial international relations because theydirectly enable the internationalization process ofcompanies or businesses. They assemble smalland medium enterprises (SMEs), large businesses,entrepreneurs and multinational corporationsin contact with companies in potential exportmarkets of interest. The commercial officials andtrade promotion professionals that organize thesemissions assist companies from their home countryto overcome barriers to internationalization byhosting them to potential partners in foreign exportmarkets and by allowing them observe thosemarkets themselves. In some cases, it can gobeyond observation, in those transactions such asbusiness deals, partnerships and joint ventures canalso take place.8
WHYSURINAME?Suriname is a member of CARICOM and thereforeTT exporters are able to export duty – free into thiscountry. In other words, no import duty is imposed.Suriname’s main trade partners are the Netherlands,the United States, Canada, and Caribbean countries,mainly Trinidad and Tobago and the islands of theformer Netherlands Antilles. Several TT companieshave exported to Suriname from both the food andnon-food manufacturing sectors and therefore,Trinidad and Tobago has a long-standing relationshipand many TT goods have been identified in thiscountry. In 2020, Suriname imported goods fromTrinidad and Tobago in the value of TTD$2.1bn .Top non-energy goods imported from Trinidadand Tobago into Suriname include beverages,iron and steel related products, propane, cerealand cigarettes.9
