Thessaloniki To Kavala [ sightseeing ]
Today your journey takes you to the biblical port city of Neapolis,
now known as Kavala, where St. Paul first set foot in Europe in 45
AD, Paul disembarked and began his mission in Greece.
Following in his footsteps travel, just as St. Paul and his
companions did, from Kavala to Philippi.
Saint Paul founded the first Christian Church on European soil at
Philippi in 49/50 AD. The establishment of the new religion and
the city's proximity to Constantinople, the Roman Empire's new
capital, brought new splendour. Three magnificent basilicas and
the Octagon complex, the cathedral dedicated to Saint Paul, were
erected in the city centre in the fourth-sixth centuries AD.
St.Paul preached his first sermon and baptized the first Christians
on European soil. Your licensed expert will guide you through the
monumental ruins, including the site where Lydia was baptized
and where St. Paul was imprisoned. You will visit the Acropolis,
the theater and the remains of the first Christian Basilica.
Reviews of the tour
I can't speak highly enough of our Footsteps of St Paul tour by Siva Travel! It was thoughtfully put together, included
various other cultural experiences such as a visit to the breathtaking Meteora monasteries, and a boat trip to Mt
Athos. Our lovely guide Dafni was OUTSTANDING. She met us at the airport with the driver, even though we had to
arrive a day early, and was there on the last morning to see us before we were taken to the airport. The trip was
brilliant, and she taught us so much about Greece as well as interpreting all the important historic sites both biblical
and classical. Dafni was sensitive and respectful of the underlying spiritual nature of our tour, and had even prepared
extracts from the appropriate passages in the Acts of the Apostles and the epistles of Paul for us to read out and
ponder at particular sites.
The tour was well paced, with a little free time sprinkled around, and it was a very small group which made it extremely
comfortable and sociable in a laid back way. We never felt rushed, despite the amazing number of places we visited.
Loved our evening walks (sometimes morning walks) with Dafni where she told us something about each city, and
helped us to appreciate it just by walking through interesting, or historic areas - particularly the streets where people
come to eat and socialize!
All the hotels chosen were different, fabulous, and beautiful too, with great beds. The restaurants where we went out
to eat each night were varied and a great experience all on their own. Marvelous to have breakfast and dinners
included, and we could please ourselves for lunch, which was very agreeable, as sometimes we were still full from
breakfast! Or we could sample local foods. Dafni's love of her work shines through, and her attention to detail is
impressive. She was always calm, cheerful, patient, and so knowledgeable without being 'dictatorial', no matter how
many questions we threw at her! And she was not only friendly, but great fun - we all did a lot of laughing.
Thank you all so much for a truly wonderful experience all round, we can hardly believe this was only 8 days, it felt so
special. :) xo
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had a wonderful holiday.
It was well planned and Dafni our guide who accompanied us throughout the 8-day trip, gave us a real buzz for the
times and travels of the apostle Paul.
Dafni was outstanding, not only in her knowledge and skill of communicating, but also in her ability to be sensitive to
our group’s desire to absorb the land Paul would have known and the impact of his teaching, that speaks to us in the
New Testament.
We felt very privileged to have had Dafni as our guide. As well as the focus on the apostle Paul, we appreciated the mix
of histories too giving us a better understanding of the ancient Greek empire and the context of the times of Paul
when Greece came under Roman control. Seeing the dramatic giant rocks of Meteora was a unique experience, and
made a natural break in our journey south to Athens.
Our thanks goes to Siva Travel’s thoughtful and well planned itinerary. Travel arrangements were excellent.
--------------------------------------------------------
We enjoyed our time in Greece very much, experiencing lovely hotels and a variety of Greek fare in the restaurants
booked for us for our evening meals.
A very memorable and enjoyable tour.
Footsteps of St Paul tour - what a fantastic experience! Dafni our guide was BRILLIANT, knowledgeable, patient, great
company, and boy did she know her stuff! Very respectful and sensitive to the underlying spiritual nature of the tour,
too - we can't speak of her highly enough. We loved that she had done her research not just on the site history but
also that recorded in both the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles of Paul.
Very well put together tour of key places where Paul preached, plus a few bonuses as well, such as the Meteora
Monasteries, and a boat trip to Mt Athos - and several interesting churches - but not too many! It was good to have a
lot of things explained about these churches, particularly the iconography. In general - fantastic interpretation of all the
sites by Dafni, our beautiful guide, who helped us to understand so much about Greece in general, as well as the
specifically Pauline historic places.
EXCELLENT hotels, lovely restaurants for evening meals (included!) extremely well paced trip. The small group allowed
for flexibility, and we would highly recommend it for someone who wants to follow Paul's footsteps without it
becoming over churchified. The emphasis was on the work of the man, and we appreciated it. (And yes, we could drink
the water in Greece out of the tap, it is better than what we have at home!)
Thank you SO MUCH Siva Travel! xo
